View Full Version : Breastfeeding In Public?
Janice 06-16-2005, 05:56 PM Barbara Walters recently caught hell for her remarks made on, The View. She told a story of a woman sitting next to her on a plane, breastfeeding her baby. I guess the woman didn't have a blanket partially covering up. It was all hanging out.
Shortly after, about 200 nursing mothers protested outside The View's ABC Studio. They call themselves 'Lactivists', lol.
What's your take on breastfeeding in public? Does it make you uncomfortable if the woman next to you does it or is it a-okay with you.
Answer the poll question please.
Courtnee 06-16-2005, 05:59 PM I don't mind at all.
dawsongirl 06-16-2005, 06:00 PM Personally, I don't like it. If you're covered up completely, or you do it discreetly in the ladies room or something, then okay I guess. But they make breast pumps for a reason...use them if you're gonna be on a plane or public where everyone is looking.
Mijada 06-16-2005, 06:13 PM I don't have a problem with it at all. All the women that I've seen breastfeeding in public have had a blanket or an article of clothing concealing the breast and baby's head. Breastfeeding is a normal, natural thing and there are bound to be certain instances where a baby needs to be fed and the mother may not have anything within easy reach to cover it up. If I was on a plane or wherever I would rather see part of a breast than hear a screaming, hungry baby.
G-Force Glockstar 06-16-2005, 06:21 PM I guess it's all right, but it's better to have a blanket over.
barwars 06-16-2005, 06:27 PM If its an ugly mother, then no.
I kid.
I kid.
I think it's okay, as long as it's done discreetly.
Janice 06-16-2005, 06:29 PM If its an ugly mother, then no.
:rotflmao:
That would be the "Other" poll option, I guess.
G-Force Glockstar 06-16-2005, 06:29 PM If its an ugly mother, then no.
I'll remember that ;)
I do not think it is appropriate under any circumstances.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 06-16-2005, 06:45 PM I don't care, I'd probably just laugh. I wouldn't do it, though.
HuntingtonM15 06-16-2005, 06:45 PM If its an ugly mother, then no.

PZelda 06-16-2005, 06:55 PM Either way, I don't care. You don't see a lot of breastfeeding mothers 'round these parts here. If I was in a big city like NYC where you would see this type of thing more often, it still wouldn't bother me. Just as long as it's done discreetly, it's alright. :)
The Modfather 06-16-2005, 07:29 PM I don't care at all. The kids gotta eat.
Kay Scarpetta 06-16-2005, 07:56 PM A kid's gotta eat... I mean come on, we've all seen boobs before at one time or another (except maybe webwarrior), it's not like the mother is voluntarily flashing her parts to everyone.
Hollow 06-16-2005, 08:03 PM i'd rather they do it in the ladies' room, but if the kid MUST be fed right then, go ahead as long as you cover it up.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 06-16-2005, 08:12 PM I do find it kind of disturbing at times, but I know it's something that has to be done as long as it's in a proper play and the mother has a blanket covering up or whatever.
I remember one time a few years ago when I used to volunteer at the humane society there was this family in there waiting to adopt a cat. Well, the youngest boy was like 2 years old and suddenly I look and I see the mother lifts up her shirt (well, the bottom part of the shirt- not TOTALLY lifts it up) to breast feed this kid!!! a TWO year old! I was trying not to start but I thought it was very odd. I could understand if it was a BABY and it had to be done- (well, still even then she could go in the restroom). but this was just wrong.
TheGreatPretender 06-16-2005, 08:17 PM At first I didn't like it but than again I didn't realize that a baby has to be nursed at any random time. So no I don't mind but the lady should bring equipment, specificly blankets around if she's taking an infant out with her.
Kazza 06-16-2005, 08:44 PM I do not think it is appropriate under any circumstances.
BF is not appropriate?

I think webwarrior means in public. That's how the question is framed.
robyrob 06-16-2005, 09:11 PM well, I for one wouldn't do it in public, but I dont care if anyone else does.
Kazza 06-16-2005, 09:18 PM I think webwarrior means in public. That's how the question is framed.
Oh! Well as long as it's done in an appropriate way. Gimme a break; you rather listen to a baby wailing his head off? :(
James"Thunder"Early 06-16-2005, 09:18 PM It doesn't bother me at all.
Seinatra 06-16-2005, 11:13 PM I dont want to see any bodily fluids coming out of anyone in public. There should be a more private spot to do it.
MsOrange 06-16-2005, 11:17 PM sex is totally natural, but i don't wannna see that in public either...
but seriously, as long as they cover it up, i don't see a problem with it, but lets face it, we live in a culture where a woman breaking her boob out for any reason is a little shocking and sometimes uncomfortable.
vienna waits 06-16-2005, 11:20 PM I'd be uncomfortable if they were next to me on a plane or something and just had their boob hanging out. I probably woudn't even notice if she had a blanket.

Same here, but I wouldn't feel comfortable DOING it in public.

I have no objections to breast-feeding. Thank God I am not lactose-intolerant. :cow: :cow:

Crap, I had that line all thought out and ready to use. But I was going to say that it isn't a horribly big deal after it.

There was this story on Inside Edition one time about a little girl who was 4 and still breastfeeding! That's downright ridiculous. So when all her little Kindergarten classmates are eating chicken nuggets and cookies, she'll have to go home and suck on her mother's breast. Great way to make kids with social problems.

Disturbed minds think alike.
dlemond 06-17-2005, 11:01 AM If it's done discreetly, I don't mind so much.
But let's not pretend these women don't know they can bottle their own breast milk and bring it with them. This would make every public situation a lot easier- not having to set up camp, cover up, worry about the baby latching on or having trouble (thereby causing more screaming and attention). If you know you are going to be out at a time of feeding it is easier for the woman to bring her own bottled breast milk.
Sometimes it seems a lot of women breast feed in public to prove the point they have the right to do it wherever they want, or to intentionally draw attention.
They know full well they can pull out a bottle and make life easier for all involved.
(And for anyone saying that the baby will get confused by switching between the mother's nipple and the bottle nipple, let me just tell you that is a fallacy, ask a doctor)
Penny Lane 06-17-2005, 12:06 PM My Mom breast fed all 7 of her children so I grew up with it! I breast fed my 2 kids but like Mom I would go into another room as it is a very private thing. But if there was no place to hide I always covered myself up. I had no need to flaunt it!

I think that's the perfect attitude Marlene. About 20 years ago, I was at a family gathering. My cousin sat on the sofa nursing her son. She was covered up (sort of), but I could tell that it made others in the room uncomfortable (guests fleeing from the room was a sure sign).
My husband and I were sitting directly across from her, engaged in conversation, so there was no way to get out of it. Thing is, we were at her mother's four bedroom house. I think she should have went to another room. Instead she just whipped it out.
I'll never believe that she didn't know that she was making everyone in the room as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
I think breastfeeding is a wonderful thing for both mother and child, but like you said, it's a very private thing.
Rhiannon 06-17-2005, 01:04 PM i'd rather they do it in the ladies' room, but if the kid MUST be fed right then, go ahead as long as you cover it up.
I agree they should try to do it in the bathroom.
Chocoholic 06-17-2005, 03:07 PM I don't care as long as they're discreet about it.
I'd rather see a mother breastfeeding her baby than changing the baby's diaper in plain view for everybody to see, or just leave the dirty diaper in a shopping cart or something. People who do something like that are so oblivious to the world around them. :barf:
swedeace 06-17-2005, 08:12 PM I don't mind it at all. I think it's perfectly natural. Then again, I think some of my mentality on "openness" is quite European. ;)
Since our American society is not as approving, then maybe a blanket would suffice for the mother's and others' privacy.
Now, if it's changing diapers, THAT would be offensive. Bodily waste is odorous, so that is quite unsanitary and offesnive for others.
Dude111 03-04-2025, 03:04 AM I picked the first option on the poll.... Its natural to feed your baby.. Why do ppl get so worked up over it??
Caroline13 03-05-2025, 04:16 PM The gawkers make the Noise...............
