Cedric is just not Funny
Living In a '70's Dream 06-11-2005, 11:44 AM Cedric is just not Funny
The whole movie looks lame, taking a classic and ruining with it by starring these unfunny actors....
ABlairican Pie 06-12-2005, 01:40 AM Usually when they remake a movie based on a classic t.v. series, you expect the actors to bear a distinct resemblance to the characters on the show, especially when you have a character with a definite identity, i.e., Jackie Gleason as Ralph Cramden. Jackie Gleason was an unforgettable entertainer who put his own stamp on his character of Ralph Cramden, who became the inspiration for Fred Flintstone. It just doesn't work when you have, for one, an actor who is a person of color that does not resemble Gleason/Cramden nor share in the characteristics that made them unique, the irascible, portly bus driver who yells at his wife and chums it up with his happy-go-lucky pal Ed Norton. Does it seem more like, "black" comedy (for lack of better term) for Cedric the Entertainer to assume a certain recognized roll? You see certain mannerisms indicative of African-American culture entertainment that had no connection with the original t.v. series. But then, the show was very basic slapstick comedy that would be hard to update 50 years after it first came out, and the only way to update it was set it in a low-income neighborhood with, you guessed it, people of color. It may be funny (or NOT)
on its own merits, but people expect it to be more like the original sitcom, and it's not, from what I understand.
Interesting, though, with the movie Wild Wild West, Will Smith made an obvious choice for the main character because of his work in sci-fi/action/adventure movies and it actually worked, even though the main character in the t.v. series was white. Sad, though, original actor James Arness was appalled and angry that a "BLACK PERSON" played his character.
Not that people of color can't play white characters, but when a definite image of a pre-existing character already exists in the audience's mind, it's hard to alter it. Ethnicity does seem to play a part in how it's interpreted.

.
You mean Robert Conrad, James Arness was in "Gunsmoke." I'm having a hard time accepting Burt Reynolds as Boss Hogg. They should have at least gotten a plus-sized actor to play the role.

 :yeahthat Me and some others were talking about Robert Conrad on Wild Wild West. I forgot. It's been a while since I saw Westerns on t.v.
I suppose "Little House on the Prairie" doesn't count? :D
TVFactFan 06-12-2005, 11:38 AM Cedric is a BAD actor, Below Average Comedian, and should not be receiving th credit he does. I can't stand his fat A$$
TripperFan 06-12-2005, 12:09 PM I have absolutely NO interest in seeing this piece of garbage (as you say, just from the ads it looks horrible).
You just can't mess with the original Ralph and Ed!

It only made a little over 5 million in its first weekend which makes it a flop and I'm glad. Ablairica, I agree with you 100%, that's like making a Good Times movie and casting a white family or casting say Danny Devito as George Jefferson.

Cedric the Entertainer is clearly overrated

I agree, he seems to take any role that is offered to him.

Actually Itd be HILARIOUS to see Danny as George
barwars 06-13-2005, 12:12 PM If it had the right actors (black or white) it would have been better. Cedric The Entertainer just isn't funny.
The character of Ralph Kramden was universal, he would have been funny black or white. Being white wasn't part of the character.
Whereas characters like Archie Bunker and George Jefferson need to be the specific color they are.
But The Honeymooners was a very basic premise. It's not something that succeeded because of the storyline. People watched it because Jackie Gleason and Art Carnie were funny. Nobody cares about the characters without the original actors.
(whereas with The Brady Bunch Movie, it was hysterical, because nobody cared about the original actors)

I disagree with you. Die hard fans of the Honeymooners(like myself) see Ralph a certain way. A movie remake was utterly ridiculous no matter who they put in the role. Hey, let's cast Ashton Kutcher as JJ Evans.

I agree. Looking at my previous post, its very badly worded. What I was trying to say was that The Honeymooners' success was because of Jackie Gleason and Art Carnie.
The Brady Bunch, which transcended on to screen brilliantly IMO, could have easily replaced any of its actors, and nobody would really notice. That's why it made for a good movie.
I meant to say it would have been better if it were someone other than Cedric The Entertainer, but it still wouldn't hold a candle to the original.

When I was reading a review on the movie and they were describing some scenes, and it dawned on me that the Norton character I was reading about wasn't Art Carney, it made me sick (not physically). No matter who they got to play them, if Jackie Gleason doesn't play Kramden and Art Carney doesn't play Norton, it's NOT The Honeymooners.
isiahthomas 06-20-2005, 10:49 AM Solomon you are wrong saying Cedric isn't funny. He is very funny. I know you saw The Original Kings Of Comedy movie he did with Steve Harvey, DL Hughley, Bernie Mac. His movies haven't been that great though. I did like him in Ride movie. He was also funny on Steve Harvey Show. Ya'll remember Cedric's comedy sketch tv show that got cancelled? Now that was corny. My friend told me that show is on dvd. I couldn't believe that. I read a review about The Honeymooners movie this past Friday & the critic dissed it. I really like Gabrielle Union, Regina Hall, Mike Epps but they should've never read the script for The Honeymooners. I don't like to see black actors playing white characters from a old tv show in a movie because blacks know they wouldn't wanna see white actors doing a remake movie of a black tv show. I don't blame whites for being upset about The Honeymooners movie.
TripperFan 06-20-2005, 11:06 AM Just read this morning People's rating - 1 1/2 stars - said the best thing about this movie is that it's only 90 minutes long. The jokes are stale and its just awful. I wouldn't waste my time.

seventies_sitcoms 06-21-2005, 12:30 PM I get the impression that The Honeymooners stink, and Cedric is NOT funny!
