View Full Version : Ever been through natural disasters?
Howdoulikemenow333 06-04-2005, 10:36 PM Has anyoneever brrn in a natural disaster? Like fires, earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, hurricans, etc. Fire season is already here and we had few fires, but they were far, and been through earthquakes. Hopefully we won't go into any natural disasters or man made disasters.
AllIWantIsYourClutch 06-04-2005, 10:43 PM There's tornadoes here all the time. Every year we have at least one or two big ones somewhere around here.
Mr. Television 06-04-2005, 10:46 PM I was in a flood on my 7th birthday. Its a day I won't forget. Also had a few Hurricanes come close but It was a tropical storm before it hit anyplace I was.
Living In a '70's Dream 06-04-2005, 10:47 PM Been in a couple of Earthquakes; and a few pretty horrific fire storms...
dandelion wine 06-04-2005, 10:48 PM I've been through a few tropical storms, floods and hurricanes.
Brent88 06-04-2005, 11:36 PM Yep... I'm 300 miles inland but we get tropical systems normally every year. Only the big hurricanes that are moving quickly pack a punch when they get here, but the weaker systems are nothing to ignore. We had a depression(actually the remnants) pass TWO-HUNDRED miles west in 2003 and had squalls with 40-50 mph gusts and power outages. Frances last year gave us 50 mph gusts and a 2-hour outage and Ivan gave up 60-70 mph gusts and a whole day without power.
Worst storm by far was Opal in 1995. Still had sustained winds of 70-80 mph with gusts to 100 mph when it rolled JUST west of here. Middle of the night... tons of trees and powerlines everywhere. Was over in 4 hours(that's why it was so strong, it was booking at 25 mph from landfall).
I have never experienced a tornado, but have experienced a number of tornado warnings and "possible" tornadoes(rotation, but nothing on the ground) as well as hail and flooding(although I've never lived in a flood plain), areas very close to here flooded a couple of years back really bad. That was the flood of the century.
Also survived the "Storm of the Century" in 1993. A foot of snow and I don't know how long without power.
Never have experienced a quake or volcano(don't have the latter here and the former is VERY unusual). I slept through the biggest quake here in 50 years two years ago... centered about 150 miles north. Only a 4.9, but by Alabama standards that's pretty big. I'd like to experience a small one one day, but I'll pass on the big ones.
Fleet 06-04-2005, 11:43 PM Yes, the 1971 San Fernando/Sylmar earthquake (6.6 magnitude) and the 1994 Northridge earthquake (6.7 magnitude). Luckily both of those happened in the early morning (6:01 AM for the '71 and 4:31 AM for the '94) so I was at home both times.
The September, 1970 wildfire, which burned from Newhall to the the ocean (Malibu) was not too far away from my house- about 6 or 7 miles at its closest.
Not really a natural disaster, but the Santa Ana winds in my area can whip up to 80 mph (74 mph is considered hurricane-force winds).
And there are floods and flooding in certain cities and districts but not where I live (I live on a hill).
theshark8777 06-04-2005, 11:54 PM I've been through one F5 tornado in May of 1985 that pretty much leveled the town. Also Ohio usully gets one or two hurricane remnants every year, nothing serious just alot of rain and some wind, but nothing to cause damage.
TripperFan 06-04-2005, 11:58 PM Only in a small cyclone up north on vacation and a very mild earthquake.
Rhiannon 06-05-2005, 12:11 AM the worst one i've been through was when hurricane Hugo came all inland in NC. i was maybe 1 though
Mijada 06-05-2005, 08:51 AM We've had quite a few tornados around here over the years. I can't count the times we had to take cover in the basement.
Courtnee 06-05-2005, 11:00 AM tornados!
*MIBabe03* 06-05-2005, 11:11 AM Yep, tornados all the time. Hell there was one that crippled Ft. Worth during rush hour and that one came near us, and somehow my mom made it home just in time. She was driving home from Dallas. Another time there was a huge hail storm that killed some people during MayFest.
Babes_Cat 06-05-2005, 11:27 AM when i was younger we had to evacuate my summer house due to an oncoming hurricane (andrew?). we ended up forgetting and leaving my cat at the house. she's okay though.
Kay Scarpetta 06-05-2005, 11:29 AM When I was little, I was at my aunt's house on Cape Cod and Hurricane Bonnie hit us pretty bad.
ABlairican Pie 06-05-2005, 12:40 PM Whittier earthquake 1987 in Los Angeles. I was scared to death and walked on eggshells all day.
And not to forget the Nisqually quake of 2001, based in an area between Tacoma and Olympia.
Stormtracker TF 06-05-2005, 04:53 PM I've never actually been through a natural disaster, but I might later today if we get a Tornado.
theshark8777 06-05-2005, 04:56 PM If you want to see some of the pictures of the 1985 tornado that went through my hometown, you can check them out here http://1985tornado.tripod.com/Newton_Falls_OH/
Kazza 06-05-2005, 05:23 PM I live in Tornado Alley and haven't been in a tornado yet. When I was a kid, I lived through 3 hurricanes.
Ags2000 06-05-2005, 05:58 PM I was in one of the areas, Nacogdoches, were pieces landed.
Not to change the topic but, You actually know of Nacogdoches??? and how to spell it right, I'm impressed. Out of curiosity, what were you doing there? Family? We have some friends that live up there that we visit frequently.
Anyway, back on topic. A few days after moving to Japan, the first of many typhoons hit. We were there about 4 years and got hit with typhoons often. After moving back to the states, we were at my grandparents lake house and some tornados hit (one went right over our house and hit the next lot.) We've also had several hurricanes down here in South Texas.
As far as I can remember no volcanos or earthquakes...but there might have been some in Japan, don't remember. It's been too long.
I did witness the Challenger explosion. I was a kid at the time and we were living in Florida. If school was in, we were always able to go outside and see the launch. You could see the launch for hundreds of miles. I'll never forget that day.

Brian 06-05-2005, 06:03 PM Who can forget the California wildfires in October 2003. So many houses were destroyed, freeways were closed, and smoke replaced clouds in the sky. I will never forget that.
MrWarmth 06-05-2005, 06:06 PM Does George Bush qualify as a natural disaster? Oh Boy Here we go again! :bye:
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 06-05-2005, 06:12 PM Ah, yes, a little natural disaster I like to call my dad coming for a "visit"
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 06-05-2005, 06:13 PM Does George Bush qualify as a natural disaster? Oh Boy Here we go again! :bye:
Oh snap!
marmalade 06-05-2005, 08:01 PM Hurricane Andrew
Brent88 06-05-2005, 08:36 PM I live in Tornado Alley and haven't been in a tornado yet. When I was a kid, I lived through 3 hurricanes.
You and a lot of people... tornadoes are so localized. I'd say in the last 7 years I've been through about 8 storms that could have produced a tornado, but didn't. The scariest one was a cell that moved over my house an hour after dropping an F5(yes, I said F5) on the suburbs of Birmingham. Killed 34 people including 2 from a 2nd tornado just a few miles from me.
EmoJoe 06-05-2005, 09:36 PM Nah, we've had little tornadoes and a little bit of a hurracine
Heart Shaped Box 06-05-2005, 09:45 PM I don't think I've been in a natural disaster yet. There was one time a couple years ago when there was a tornado warning, but nothing ever happened.
There was a few floods in a couple of cities close by our town, but we didn't get it. There was a big flood in my town though, but I wasn't even born.
The only other one I can think of is snowstorms. A couple years ago it was so bad that the whole power went out and we couldn't even go outside. I think there was another one too maybe a year or two ago, but I can't remember.
