View Full Version : I have an idea for NASA
Hollow 06-04-2005, 04:58 AM We could send astronauts to paint the entire moon pink! and maybe write a big message on it like "EMO SUCKS". it'll be so pretty!1 umm to find out how much paint we would need
the radius of the moon is 1079.5 mi, so to find the surface area we calculate 2 · 3.14156535897932384626433 (as much as i know of pi) · 1079.5², which would be 7,321,923 square miles, then multiply it by 5280 to convert it to square feet, which makes it 38,659,753,440, then divide it by 400 (the number of square feet a gallon of paint usually covers) so we would need 96,649,383 gallons of pink paint. i say we start a fundraiser to make about a billion dollars to buy all that paint, otherwise we can make bill gates pay for it.
Superstar 06-04-2005, 05:50 AM pink is nice.
TripperFan 06-04-2005, 08:20 AM I fancy a nice royal purple - you don't want a huge gumball in the sky!! :D
Courtnee 06-04-2005, 09:47 AM What about sliver? It would look prettier than yellow, and it would shill show up!
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 06-04-2005, 10:37 AM The is the most inspiring idea I have ever heard...
Rhiannon 06-04-2005, 10:49 AM pink is nice.
I agree.

It would be correct if the moon were a flat circle (area of a circle = pi x r²), however the moon is a sphere, so the formula would be:
surface area = 4pi x r²
making your surface area = 42616.9518039038505161273321374652 square miles, which you multiply by 5280 squared to convert to square feet, which makes 1,188,092,429,169.953, divide by 400 sqrfeet/gallon = 2,970,231,072.924 gallons or almost 3 billion gallons of paint.
Assuming that we don't need to use a lot more primer because the moon of made of green cheese that is.
Stormtracker TF 06-04-2005, 02:28 PM I still say they need to ingrave an Image of Desi Arnaz on the moon.

That was going to be my question too - is that one or two coats of paint? Even with those "One Coat" rollers and paints, I find one coat NEVER enough to properly cover - and of course, you've got all those craters to go in and out of. You don't want to run out up there - I don't think Ace Hardware has expanded that far yet!

I vote ALF (more appropriate)!
Johnny Five 06-04-2005, 03:41 PM I fancy a nice royal purple - you don't want a huge gumball in the sky!! :D
Well, the only difference is that it would be a grape flavored gumball.

That, but I think guys would like royal purple more than pink too. Maybe we could save pink for the sun (you need a heat resistant paint for that one tho)! ;) :p
Superstar 06-04-2005, 04:12 PM I agree.
Good. It would be so cool to look up at a pink moon.....

I think we should paint the sun black. Then maybe well get a nice overcast look.
Or it might just make everything look purple like a blacklight does.

I light that blacklight idea!! Oh I wouldn't want it done in full black though - I like my sunshine too much! Thing of the cool colour you'd get painting it pink though - the whole day would be like a nice sunset!!
I saw we should lassoo Pluto, hitch it to the Earth with a chain, and it can be like a trailer for the overflow! We could paint that pink with purple spots!

Now your talking big bucks. We'll definitely need Bill Gates for that one.

That's true - but I'm sure we could talk him into it if he was given exclusive rights to Windows on it! :D

Yeah, but then we would be bombarded with cosmic advertisments.
TripperFan 06-04-2005, 04:49 PM Yeah, but then we would be bombarded with cosmic advertisments.
Ah we're gonna be sooner or later anyway! That's what will end up happening to the moon - it'll become one big billboard for McDonald's or something!

Hey, I saw that last night! I got a picture of it.
TripperFan 06-04-2005, 05:26 PM See - I knew it would happen if it hadn't already!!
(Reminds me of when we were asked to decorate our office doors at Christmas - I decided on a scene where the three wisemen on are on the backs of camels trudging through the desert on the way to the manger. I got the rolling dunes in and decided it HAD to have some Golden Arches added - so I did - I won the contest!)
That grey could use some sprucing up for sure!
Sterling Holobyte 06-05-2005, 09:50 PM Hmmm... How would you paint in zero gravity?!
Paint pens?! That would take too long.

 good point
TripperFan 06-05-2005, 09:59 PM Wallpapering wouldn't be easy either!!

true..... :google: Maybe we could just hang curtains!!!!
TripperFan 06-05-2005, 10:06 PM true..... :google: Maybe we could just hang curtains!!!!
Good idea! Some nice pink sheers - just drape them over it!
Max Whittaker 06-05-2005, 11:17 PM You people are not thinking three dimensionally! You can't paint the moon! It's physically and geographically impossible! Rollers? Wallpaper? Curtains? Ridiculous!
What we'll need to do is dunk the entire thing into a huge cup of Easter egg dye. The dye will penetrate deep within the surface of the moon, thus, instantaneously rearranging it’s visual structure. Simple and plausible.

Yeah - and who's gonna hold the bowl of dye still without spilling it on the earth? I can see a mess in the making here Sonny!! ;)
Max Whittaker 06-06-2005, 01:04 AM Yeah - and who's gonna hold the bowl of dye still without spilling it on the earth? I can see a mess in the making here Sonny!! ;)
Cathie, my dear. It's precisely that kind of attitude that has kept the moon it's banal color for all these millennia.
It's a heavy burden, but I volunteer to hold the bowl steady. Sacrifices must be made for the advancement of science.

YA EWE CAN. the paint will just weigh less. if the moon had no gravity there wouldn't be waves in the ocean.

O.k., my luv, YOU'RE the man who gets to hold it steady! No coffee or cola for a week ahead for you! And get plenty of rest!
It'll probably take a few people to push it down into the bowl.
No matter what, all these ideas are much better than wood panel. I mean, really, who wants it to look like a den off of That 70s Show!! Besides, where we would put the mandatory coordinating orange shag carpet?
TripperFan 06-06-2005, 05:20 PM YA EWE CAN. the paint will just weigh less. if the moon had no gravity there wouldn't be waves in the ocean.
hmmmmm, not bad Sarah, but the pink tends to highlight that crater at the "south pole". Reminds me of one of my avatars!! What about tie-dye? I'm sure Allison could help us out there!
