I know nothing about sounding your best vocally, sorry :) The only tip I could give you to is do scales but I'm sure you knew that already :lol:

When you sing..

1. Always sing from your stomach. Never sing with just your throat, or it won't be that good.
2. Always keep your head straight forward.
3. If you're trying to reach a high note, don't lift your head up. (That's what most people do)
4. Same thing when you're doing a low note. Don't bend your head down. Keep your head straight.

Also to add..

5. Don't get tense at all. The more you're tense, your voice is going to sound horrible.
6. Make sure to always practice and do scales.

Jessica Simpson can't sing. Did you see the special that was on a few days ago? When she was singing "God Bless America", She kept moving her head in every driection!!! It looked and sounded horrible. :(

Well, if you have a good voice, what's there to worry about? Don't worry though, I know how you feel. I have a good voice too, but I HATE singing in front of people by myself. You could try pretending that the audience isn't even there so you can feel more comfortable.

If you want more confidence, try singing in front of people more often so you can feel more comfortable. That's all I can think of.

Just some things I've learned over the years in chorus. :)

- When reaching high notes, put more weight onto your toes. Build up to the high notes. Think HIGHER than the note, so you wont come out flat.
- Do not allow your stomach to collapse when singing. Make use of your diaphragm.
- Do not raise your shoulders when taking a breath. It probably means you're breathing TOO much.
- Stand in a "singing position." Back straight. Head forward. Legs a bit apart [shoulder with], but not too much. Arms hanging by your side. Do not lock your knees. Loosen up. Don't be tense.
- Put your jaw in a north-south position, not east-west. (Make believe there is an egg inside your mouth. Sounds silly? But it works. ;))
- Practice.

And most important of all...

- Sing from the heart. Be one with the song. :)

Hope that helps. :wave:

We sing these everyday in chorus in a scale :lol:

Chester Cheetah chewed a chunk of cheep and chunky cheddar cheese

Mama made me mash my M@Ms

Unique New York (you probably already heard of that one though :lol: )

Also we do the traditional Do Re Mi.. but we also try to hit every note and not in order like Do Re Do Mi Do Fa...etc. etc.

Also make sure your body is not tensed up so you can breathe better.

We also sing "How do you do, my very good friend? Fine, very well my very good friend" in a semi-scale. ;)

We do occasional sight-reading, too. It's better to sing keeping in mind the notes you are singing, rather than just "singing." Does that make sense? :p

I agree. I stopped taking piano about 3 years agao but from chorus I actually learned to read music again. :lol: There's plenty of times when my voice doesn't hit the right notes like when we sang "I believe I can Fly" the "I believe" is all the same note in the sheet music, but my voice always wavers at that part like R. Kelly's does. :lol:

Honestly, the best thing that has worked for me as a singer is being myself. Don't try to sound like other singers. You know deep down what you can do and what you can't. Don't push yourself to meet other peoples' expectations. Make use of your talent the best way you know how. Don't let people tell you that you can do something when you know you can't or you're not ready. You don't want to strain your voice or anything.

It takes time and practice to build yourself up as a singer. I've never had any formal training but I've been singing for a long time. Only recently have I discovered some of the different things I can do with my voice when singing different styles of music.

As for the confidence thing: It's very difficult to let go of what you think other people are thinking about you. I'm still learning how to do this myself. I've performed numerous times infront of audiences and it never gets any easier. Everybody gets nervous. But use your nerves to make your performance even better. That's what I do. When I get nervous, it gives me more drive and determination to make an impression and to do my best. Use it to your advantage. I know it sounds crazy, but it helps.

If you have vocal chords, YOU CAN SING. A year ago from now i seriously sounded like ****. a few days ago my choir teacher told my counselor that my voice is "unbelievable" and he wants to talk to me about seriously pursuing singing. The reason you don't sound good is because you don't have the techniques developed, which you CAN do. All you have to do is learn.

Oh, thanks. But I don't think I will ever get into singing, because people tell me I'm good at other things like writing.....and when I grow up I wanna be a writer or an actress. But singing would be fun.

PRACTICE. Seriously that is all it takes with anyone that performs in front of other people is to get the hang of it. If you know a certain song well you can start to belt it out and have fun with it. If you are doing something you LIKE to do and you know you are good at then performing or singing will be a breeze if you practice.

- Pronounce the consonants of words as quickly as possible. get to the vowels as soon as you can. and make sure all the vowels feel the same in the back of the throat, you shouldn't feel it change. for example, instead of saying "ee", say "ih". just tone down the "ee" and "ay" sounding vowels so they sound more like "ih". make the "oo" and "oh" vowels sound more like the u in "put" is pronounced. here's a list of consonant sounds and what to say instead to make it sound better. it probably seems weird, but it helps (just don't overpronounce them).

C/K = G
F = V
H = don't pronounce it
P = B
S = Z
T = D
Yeah, this is especially important. Otherwise, it'll just sound very, very bad. Also, make sure to exaggerate endings, like the word "Lord," for example. People have a tendancy is sing "Lor." Make sure to put extra emphasis on that "D-" sound. ;)

And congrats, Sarah, that your counselor told you to consider singing as a profession. That'll be soooooo cool! :cool: Are you in the school chorus? If you aren't you should join. You'd LOVE it! (Well, at least I do, haha). Last month, I auditioned for "Chamber" chorus (the highest level chorus) and I got in!! Heheheheeee. I'm estatic :D I've done numerous solos when I was younger (including one at the mayor's office :o), but then I stopped around 3rd grade or so. I rejoined chorus in HS, and I'm glad to finally be able to do this again. :)

Voice lessons would work just as well, probably more than just reading a book. basically, anything you can do to learn about singing will help, even studying the anatomy of the vocals.

As for being confident, just be calm about it. if you're nervous, inhale and exhale slowly a few times. don't focus TOO hard on what you're doing. that will cause a lot of tension. remember that you'll notice any mistakes you make much more than anyone else will. if you mess up, and it's a song the audience isn't too familiar with, i guarantee there will be a slim chance they'll even notice. if it's a song they know, they'll probably just think you altered it for the performance.

Yep, i'm a choir geek. my school has three choirs; "bel canto" (which is only for girls) and "taste of sound" you have to audition for, and "singers" is for anyone. i started in singers this past year but i auditioned for bel canto at the end of the first semester and i got in. i won a "most improved" award last week. when my choir teacher presented it he was saying how i wasn't good at the beginning of the year and my bel canto audition was phenomonal. next year i'm going to be in both bel canto and singers, both being entire class periods. ahh i'm gonna love it. it'll really help raise my GPA too since i've never gotten anything lower than an A in choir. :grr:

Okay, here is my situation.

If you take 30 people, divide them into two groups, one group would say that I need singing lessons. The other group would say that I sing beautifully.

I'm in a band called Young Lust: A Tribute to Classic Rock. One of the bands we'll be covering is Aerosmith. Steven Tyler has to have possibly the greatest vocals on earth. When I sing people have told me I sound a little like Bob Segar. When I sing Guns N' Roses, my bass guitarist says I sound like Axl Rose.

A friend of my mom's was at our house a few weeks ago and we talked about my band so we started talking about singing and she gave me some tips and she told me that she saw an incredible progress within that one lesson.

I just don't know what to do.

I started off in 'regular' chorus, too, but now I'm at the most 'advanced' one. Horray! It does wonders for your GPA if your music teacher's nice. My music teacher gives the WHOLE class the same grade -- 80, 85, or 90, HAHA.

I love singing...it's my absolute favoritist thing to do.

When I was 2-3 I sang the ABC's for my doctor and she told my mom to watch me because it was unheard of for a kid that age to carry a tune...so after my mom told me that I wanted to be a singer. But than I decided that I didn't want to pursue the lessons and stuff. However I've been listening to Broadway soundtracks a lot lately and all of a sudden I don't care how many lessons I have to take (I'm very untrained, I have natural talent, but it's reckless) I want to be on Broadway more than anything.

That makes life happy.

So I'm starting private lessons soon.
