View Full Version : Star Wars opening weekend predictions
Brad Russ 05-17-2005, 10:07 AM What do you guys predict the new Star Wars movie will make in it's opening weekend?? I'm guessing it'll be around $110,000,000. With all the promotion it's gotten over the last couple weeks, I think anything under a hundred million would probably be considered a disappointment. I think it'll probably get $170,000,000 in it's first five days. I doubt it'll break Titanic's all time record, but I think it'll end up making around $500,000,000 in the end, making it the second highest grossing film ever. How do you all think it'll do??
*MIBabe03* 05-17-2005, 10:22 AM I'm sure it will have large numbers. I'll admit it though, I'm not a fan.
Brad Russ 05-17-2005, 10:35 AM I'm not much of a fan either. I actually haven't even seen the last two films in the series, and thought the original three were overrated. Personally, I think it would be kind of funny to see it bomb, but I know that won't happen.
Brian Damage 05-17-2005, 10:43 AM At least $100 million.
Mr. Television 05-17-2005, 12:31 PM I read a review of the movie in USA Today and it got 3 and a half stars. It said it would make up for the last 2 movies which I liked although they were not even close as great as the original 3. I can't wait to see it.
MandieR1980 05-17-2005, 07:03 PM I've never seen any of the Star Wars movies, a former coworker of mine is supposed to hang out with me and watch the first two of the newer series and then he's taking me to the new one. I don't really care about the movie to me it's all about the company LOL! ;)
I'd say around 150 mil this weekend. Ten of that will be mine. Maybe 20, my brother and I might see it twice.
;)
Brad Russ 05-17-2005, 11:54 PM My brother will probably go see it atleast 10 times I'm sure. He's one of those fans who buys every piece of merchandise that comes out. I'm sure he's spent close to 10 thousand dollars on star wars merchandise over the years. Just last week he went $500.00 in debt purchasing stuff on ebay, and with all the new crap coming out, I'm sure he's not finished. The more I think of it, I think the chances of this movie beating Titanic's all time record is pretty good. The same way pre-teen girls went and saw that film over and over again, I'm sure there will be Star Wars freaks who will do the same thing with this film.
Dean Winchester 05-18-2005, 04:00 AM I'm not much of a fan either. I actually haven't even seen the last two films in the series, and thought the original three were overrated. Personally, I think it would be kind of funny to see it bomb, but I know that won't happen.
Attack Of The Clones was a relative bomb for the franchise (well, it felt like a non-event compared to Spiderman and LOTR that year). Revenge Of The Sith is the installment in the franchise we've all been waiting for since Lucas said he'd made more Star Wars.
I'm sure there will be Star Wars freaks who will do the same thing with this film.
Freaks?
I think fans is a nicer way to describe us.
Brad Russ 05-18-2005, 05:00 AM I don't mean literal freaks, I just use that word to describe anyone who's fanatical about something. Myself, I'm a movie freak, and an ice cream freak, Whereas someone like my brother I'd call a star wars freak. No offense was intended for any star wars fans out their.

Hopefully TJL you don't dress up like one of the characters. Sorry but those people that do, are freaks.
LucyCompanyPhan 05-18-2005, 07:26 PM I'd say around 150 mil this weekend. Ten of that will be mine. Maybe 20, my brother and I might see it twice.
;)
150 million is alittle high considering the record is 114 million. (Spiderman)
I think in the first 6 days it will reach 150 million though.
Thursday (opening day doesn't count for the weekend because its not among fri, sat & sun) so thats going to hurt it. I think midnight showing for tonight (wednesday) it will gross a good 6 million. My predicitions give or take 5 million from each day.
Midnight: 6 million
Thursday: 32 million
Friday: 39 million
Saturday: 36 million
Sunday: 31 million
125-130 for the first 4 days. 106-111 million opening weekend.
Nighthawk76 05-18-2005, 07:34 PM I saw some pictures from a premiere of Revenge of the Sith and Natalie Portman had a shaved head. Does anyone know what that is all about? I expect the film to at least pull in $100 opening weekend.
Ewan's My Man 05-18-2005, 07:34 PM I don't know, but I can't wait to see it! Ewan McGregor is still a stud in my eyes...
I saw some pictures from a premiere of Revenge of the Sith and Natalie Portman had a shaved head. Does anyone know what that is all about?
Her shaved head is for a new movie she's working on.
Mr. Television 05-18-2005, 07:39 PM I have now added A Star Wars avatar. I'm ready to get crazzzzyyy.
Max Whittaker 05-18-2005, 09:14 PM I have now added A Star Wars avatar. I'm ready to get crazzzzyyy.
That one's nice! You're ready to take on anyone with that!
Max Whittaker 05-18-2005, 09:24 PM Hopefully TJL you don't dress up like one of the characters. Sorry but those people that do, are freaks.
:D That would be me! I wore a Star Trek uniform(not costume) to the premiere of ST: Nemesis. :p

its for a movie role. I don't remember what movie, but shes currently filming it now.
*MIBabe03* 05-18-2005, 09:37 PM She looks scary!
eltonfan80 05-18-2005, 10:03 PM well i work at a movie theater and today there were at least 50 or more pepole lined up for the movie and i work tommrow it's going to be bananas.
Dean Winchester 05-18-2005, 10:03 PM I've always been a fan of Sinead O'Connor, Natalie will do a great job in the biopic
Nighthawk76 05-18-2005, 10:30 PM Her shaved head is for a new movie she's working on.
I thought that must be it. However, her new look isn't doing much for me.
Nighthawk76 05-18-2005, 10:32 PM I've always been a fan of Sinead O'Connor, Natalie will do a great job in the biopic
Yeah, she does look a bit like Sinead, doesn't she?
Brad Russ 05-19-2005, 04:43 AM I've always been a fan of Sinead O'Connor, Natalie will do a great job in the biopic
That's the first person I thought of when I saw that photo too. She also kind of looks like Demi Moore, from when she was playing G.I. Jane. I think she looks alright, but she definitely looks better with hair. Anyway, my brother and his girlfriend got to go to an early screening of the film on Tuesday, and they both loved it. She actually cried, and my brother came pretty close to crying as well. Apparantely this is supposed to be a real emotional movie.
Ags2000 05-19-2005, 04:59 AM Well, judging by the crowd at the theater I was at this morning, (6 showings around 1200 people) it was all sold out. I figure 100 mil EASILY!
By the way, the lightsaber battles are awesome!!!!!
D

How is the character development?
LucyCompanyPhan 05-19-2005, 06:51 PM well just for the midnight showings it got an easy 17 million. Its quite possible for a 40 million dollar opening day. I think thats already broken the record for a midnight release.

I agree. I think it comes very close to the spirit of the original Star Wars movies.
barwars 05-20-2005, 09:20 AM Apparantely this is supposed to be a real emotional movie.
The scene where.... SPOILER....
The scene where all the Jedi are killed, and Anakin slaughters the children was depressing. Especially when they killed that one Jedi with the "conehead." When they went to kill Yoda, and he just flipped out and lightsabered their asses was awesome.
Still spoiler, but unrelated.... the best scene of the movie was when Yoda and the Emperor were battling, and then they just started to rise up into the Senate. Easily the coolest Star Wars moment since "I am your father"
END SPOILER
All in all, a great film, that leaves you just as excited the morning after as you felt throughout the film.
Dean Winchester 05-20-2005, 02:42 PM with the great word-of-mouth this is getting, and how well it's doing so far, maybe something will finally knock Titanic off it's throne after all.
This certainly will have more staying power than AOTC, and tickets cost more than they did when Phantom came out.
Superstar 05-20-2005, 02:48 PM I'm not a fan, but I know it will beat Shrek 2 in the highest grossing movies list.
LucyCompanyPhan 05-20-2005, 04:16 PM well it already broke opening day records.
"While Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith was expected to have a big opening, no one expected it to be this big! George Lucas' third and final prequel in the "Star Wars" saga earned an incredible $50 million from 3,661 theaters on Thursday alone. That's an average of $13,661 per location for just one day.
The $50 million opening, which includes $16.5 million from midnight screenings, blows away the $40.4 million opening day record held previously by Spider-Man 2 from 4,152 theaters, and it also marks the biggest single day ever at the North American box office, beating Shrek 2's $44.8 million from 4,163 theaters.
In comparison, 1999's Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace debuted to $28.5 million in 2,970 theaters and 2002's Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones to $30.1 million in 3,161 locations.
Released by 20th Century Fox, "Revenge of the Sith" was produced for about $113 million."
*MIBabe03* 05-22-2005, 06:05 PM For all you Star Wars nerds:
Ags2000 05-23-2005, 10:12 AM I'd say around 150 mil this weekend. Ten of that will be mine. Maybe 20, my brother and I might see it twice.

Well, TJL got it right on the head. News is reporting that Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith sold an estimated $108.5 million worth of tickets for the Friday-to-Sunday period, taking its total to $158.5 million since it opened after midnight on Thursday. They also say that the rankings could change when final data are issued on Monday.
I LOVE this movie. For me, it has taken the place as the best Star Wars movie over Return of the Jedi.
D
Brian Damage 05-23-2005, 11:01 AM After watching 'Sith', I decided to watch Star Wars episode IV A New Hope and I gotta tell you, Sith blows that away.

Ags2000 05-23-2005, 01:51 PM How is the character development?
Personally I thought the character development was very well. You really see why the characters become what they are in the later years. The transformation of Anakin to Darth Vader is like WOW!!!!! He was really played like a violin by the Emperor.
D
Dean Winchester 05-23-2005, 03:13 PM I read Sith grossed $158 million opening weekend. About time somebody knocked Spiderham out of the top opening weekend.

Actual compared to mine:
Midnight: 16.5 million
Thursday: 50 million (total)
Friday: 33.8
Saturday: 40.9
Sunday: 33.8
so my estimates for thursday was really low with only about 32 million (compared to the 50 opening) but my opening weekend estimate was right on with it opening 108.5 million (and me picking 106-111 million)
Obviously my first 4 days was extremely low but I had the weekend pegged. I'm pretty proud of my estimates.
Sith has about 158 million as of now total. This includes its thursday's opening. Thursday grossed 50 million but that 50 million does not count for opening weekend. So technically the movie only made 108.5 million in its opening weekend. Which is the second best opening right behind Spiderman but beating Shrek 2.

I was off by 1.5 million, so I was pretty close with my weekend estimation as well. I think my five day estimation was 170 million, so I was a little high on that. I was actually thinking it would probably be higher as the weekend grew closer, and am a little surprised it didn't beat out Spiderman, but I'm glad it beat out Shrek 2. I'm sticking with my overall gross prediction of 500 million overall. That feels about right to me.
Dean Winchester 05-23-2005, 06:10 PM I think word of mouth is the final factor to the long-term success of Sith.
AOTC had a great opening weekend, but people quickly spread "this isn't a very good Star Wars flick" about the movie, and it petered out around the $300 mark. $300 million isn't bad at all, but it was kind of anemic for a film franchise as phenomenal as Star Wars, especially isnce Phantom Menace made $430 million.
So far, with word spreading about how great RITS is, with die-hards saying it may very well be the best of the series, plus with no "major" films coming until Batman Begins in mid-June (problem with Clones was that it had a huge rival with Spiderman that summer, and with LOTR out that fall, it didn't stand a chance at being the #1 film of the year.), I think Sith is gonna rule for awhile.
The next two weekends will be vital to the future of the film. Considering the legacy of Star Wars and the phenomenal word-of-mouth Sith is getting, especially after the lackluster word of mouth Phantom and Clones got, Sith may very well be what it takes to finally sink the Titanic once and for all in terms of being the #1 box office smash of all time.

Cool! Tickets to Episode III and Monster In Law!
Talk about a win-win!

It's for a new movie she's filming, I can't remember the name of it though.
ROTS is expected to surpass what Spiderman 2 did ;)
musicradio77 05-23-2005, 09:19 PM From the Daily News:
Moviegoers out in Force for $158M 'Sith' opening
"Revenge of the Sith" may be a dark film, but by the end of its first four days it was glowing pure green.
"Sith," the last movie in George Lucas' six-picture, 28-year "Star Wars" saga, followed the most lucrative single day in movie box-office history with the second most lucrative weekend. The movie raked in a record-shattering $158.5 million in four days.
"You can't really measure a film like this against anything else," says Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations. "It was unprecedented and phenomenal."
After scoring $50 million on Thursday - the first time a film ever passed that figure in one day - "Sith" added $108.5 million over the weekend. That's second only to the $114.8 million opening weekend recorded by "Spider-Man" in 2002.
"Sith" also broke the four-day record of $134.3 million set by "The Matrix Reloaded" in 2003.
"Sith," which traces how good-guy Anakin Skywalker became archvillain Darth Vader, was shown on more than 9,000 screens - about one in every four in America. It also benefited from a massive cross-promotion and marketing campaign.
Some critics found the PG-13 "Sith" more violent and disturbing than previous "Star Wars" films, which were PG-rated.
But Dergarabedian said the big opening "strongly suggests this is not just appealing to the hard-core fans, but has already become a mainstream movie."
