View Full Version : Maybe we should be blaming the American people too

Not that I want to let NBC off easy, but maybe they are not the only ones to blame here.

Why do droves of people watch all of these low class, low quality "reality" shows and repetitive cop shows? These shows don't exactly cater to the highest common denominator. American Dreams, on the other hand, is a show for intelligent and enlightened people. Maybe AD is just a little too classy and enlightened for an American public that would much rather watch cops and robbers chasing each other on TV or bikini clad women eating worms on a "reality" show.

The fact of the matter is that the American people's appetites are very child like and it's not surprising then that the networks would seek to cater to that demographic.

NBC loved the show... they just couldn't keep it on because of low viewership and cost. Ultimately... TV is a business. If you don't make money, you have to make changes, simple as that.

I agree with you Mel. I am sick of all this america bashing. If you hate america so damn much, go to france. Everyone bashes america untill they need something, and then who do they come to for help, america. I hate reality tv too, but pissing on america is immature and for people who cannot argue a point of view like an adult. Grow the hell up.

You are reading FAR.....FAR.... too much into the point the poster was getting at ! He/she was NOT bashing AMERICANS [ I AM ONE ] . They were simply stating a valid point ! The point being.....is that the "viewership" .......in AMERICAN television right now..... is simply avoiding great "content "shows like American Dreams in droves ! ALL the while, falling all over themselves to watch such "crap " , as "Survivor " ........."American Idol " .........." Desperate Houswives"................."Fear Factor "................ect ! Why is this happening ?
Is it because of a "Dumbing Down " of the American People ? Maybe, to a small degree . I think that the "Taste factor " of the American People [as a whole], has dropped dramatically in the last 10 years ! Both in musical tastes, and in the television shows they watch . Sorry .......it's the truth ! ;)

The poster wasn't bashing Americans as a people. I happen to agree with the poster, and I, too, am an American.

How is it that politics have entered this discussion? This "If you hate America, go to France" does not belong on this board. Go to Free Republic to spout that nonsense. N'est-ce pas?

No I am not from the seventies, although todays music is so bad, I wish I was (just missed it by a year.) Second, while we do have the freedom to criticize america, I find it disrespectfull to do so, especially during a time of war. There are enough anti american losers from other countries out there, I dont think americans need to add to it. Its kind of like, its ok to criticize your family, but not when someone else does it. The problem is, like I said, since we have the french doing that crap, lets not add to it. Getting back to the topic at hand, its not just america, but everyone seems to be obsessed with reality tv. What makes america great is the fact we can criticize it, what makes AMERICANS not great is when they take advantage of those rights and use them against america. If you want to complain about america, go ahead, but I feel it is not right, especially not now. Ill assume you will respond. And again I repeat, sticking up for america is not crap, Im sorry you feel otherwise brotha!

If that is your attitude then you really didn't learn a damn thing from the show, did you? I guess you didn't like Meg, Sam, Nathan, Henry, Patty and Helen because they did all of those things on the show. Oh well, now the show is gone, and you'll have time to go look for those weapons of mass destruction.

I suggest you stick to what you know best, criticizing america. Its too bad people like you dont have more people to agree with you, maybe you would win some elections. But sad for you, the majority agrees with me. Now, I think AD was the best show on tv, eventhough I dissagreed with some of the anti war messages it sent, it was overall a very captivating show. I have always enjoyed shows like AD and the wonder years, shows that look back at the past. As far as the shows characters go, I believe JJ and Jack, along with numerous others, would likely agree with me. I seem to recall jack saying love it or leave it to meg once or twice, and jack, and jj and others agreed with me on issues as meg and sam agreed with you on issues. Perhaps you and I got different messages from the show. Your heard what you wanted to hear and I did the same. I suspect that is natural, but make no mistake about it, you too may have missed some messages, or chose to ignore them. Such as when the troops are fighting oversees, how important it is to be supportive, and not critical, even if it is in the name of "bringing them home safely," they still need positive reinforcement. As far as television/movies go in general, if I only watched shows with conservative writers, I would never get to enjoy tv or movies, or music for that matter. You as a more liberal viewer have the advantage of having hollywood agreeing with you, and so the shows tend to skew left. And me, well I guess I'll just have to put up with hollywood being liberal and have to settle for a majority of americans aggreeing with me. Its just a shame we dont have our own hollywood. Oh, and that WMD jab was mature, wow. Perhaps you should email the UN who thought old saddam had them too, maybe they too will laugh at your clever sense of humor. Im guessing you have a selective memory on issues such as the UN also feeling he had wmd's. Have a good one friends. I enjoy the back and forth with my left leaning counterparts. Even though they are like a broken record of blame america first'isms (most of them, I should not throw the baby out with the bathwater). good day. RIP to jack and JJ, and, well, even the progressive Meg and helen. I should mention I too am progressive when it comes to race and some, very few, issues (as are most people progressive when it comes to race), its just this anti american stuff kinda pisses me off. I use the phrase PROGRESSIVE because I know liberals hate being called liberal. how would you end this post, im guessing you would say PEACE.

I agree w New AD Fan. What they said wasn't anti-American, just anti -stupid people who happen to live in America. I am an American and I do believe the there is becoming a dumbing down of America. It's sad but true. The show is over. Let it go. :)

Here's my last word on the subject: Wartime or peactime, the beautiful thing about living in America is being able to speak your mind for fear of retribution. It's called freedom of speech.

It's not being anti-American. Anyone who thinks so is unpatriotic themselves and must prefer living in a dictatorship. Sorry, but that's not the American where I grew up. Stop picking on the French and our other allies (well, they used to be our allies). How do you not know there aren't French AD fans or people of French descent on this board?

Now, back to our discussion on AD.

Yea.................I've seen 1964 before . They too are a good band . My main problem with them tho, is that they are getting [ old] ! Also, they only perform the Beatles early songs . NOT that that is a Bad thing mind you . I just like the way Liverpool Legends can cover the ENTIRE BEATLES song catalog [and beyond into the solo careers] . 1964 is still the "Big Kahoona " tho with Beatles Tribute band folks , and the guys in LL are good friends with them as well ! It's a story of the" Old Guard " and the "New Kids on the block " scenario i guess !

The thing about the 60s that kind of scares me is how divided the country became. I have heard stories of parents and children literally not speaking to each other. It seems once again the country is divided. In my entire posting history on this site, I have only been involved in one argument before this one, so I guess this makes it the second time. When people start saying "love it or leave it" I get a little scared. The 60s were a scary time, and I don't want to see the country torn apart again.

1. "American Dreams" is not liberal or conservative. It's both. Meg and Chris are anti-war, Jack and JJ are pro-war. Nathan was for the more radical Nation of Islam, and Henry was for integration. Nathan eventually changed his views and started to see things Henry's way. Helen is for women's rights, and was very uncomfortable about Donald's sexuality, and refused to tell Patty about it. What was cool about the show is that both sides were represented, and neither was presented as right or wrong. That was for the viewer to decide.

2. The show was about family values. The whole family sat down to dinner every night to talk to each other. Swearing was not allowed. They even tried to give Roxanne a steady family. She lived with her mother, but the Pryor's included her in thier family dinner like she was one of them. I think this is something that has been lost, and the show was attempting to demonstrate. I am a strong beliver in the family dinner.

3. Reality TV is a fad, the same way variety shows were once a fad. Since the begining of television, there have been quality family shows on. Another family show will come on. I'm not sure when, or if it will be as good as "American Dreams", but something will turn up. Reality TV is not the death of television. I know I've said this before, but 10-20 years from now, we will look back at reality TV and laugh. Not a mean laugh, but "Oh my god, I can't beleive so much of the country was into THAT". A collective "what were we thinking".

4. The whole Liberals are this, Conservatives are that, doesn't mean that much. Very few people agree with either party on all the issues. When it comes down to it, all Americans are Americans. Having one set of views or another doesn't make you less American, it just makes you different. Throughout the country's history, there have been times when conservatives are in power, and times when liberals are in power. Eventually, the party that was the majority becomes the minority, and so it goes until the next changeover.

5. I love this show. I hate it when people fight. Let's respect each other's views. I'm not saying we have to agree with each other, but at least respect each other's view points. People have a right to believe what they want. If you think thier view is crazy or stupid, you're entitled to think that.

The reason sitcoms and family dramas have cooled is because they are now unoriginal. Just about every sitcom is the same basic thing and something that we've seen before. It's the same lines that were funny 15 years ago but aren't now. Same goes for most dramas. The reason "Desperate Housewives" is a hit is because there's nothing on TV like it(and hasn't been in years).

Main thing is we lost a good show. Unless they somehow bring it back there is no point in talking about it anymore.
