A fundementilist I once knew said it is a race. This is an issue that actually can get quite heated. For some reason, it mattered a great deal to him to prove to me that Jew is a race.

Seems like your book may be wrong on two accounts, as this indicates it effects more than those of Jewish descent.

While anyone can be a carrier of Tay-Sachs, the incidence of the disease is significantly higher among people of eastern European (Ashkenazi) Jewish descent. Approximately one in every 27 Jews in the United States is a carrier of the TSD gene. Non-Jewish French Canadians living near the St. Lawrence River and in the Cajun community of Louisiana also have a higher incidence of Tay-Sachs. For the general population, about one in 250 people are carriers.

Funny, years ago when my brother was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, the doctor told my mother than it was only seen in young, Jewish males!!!

Now you hear about Crohn's in the general population all the time.

I would say its a religion and an ethnicity more than a race, but I think they hope to be considered a race. I know they feel that being Jewish is more than just a religion - its part of the striving to get them back to Isarael.

Oh I know - turns out its got to be total crap, because my mother had it, and my other brother got it in his forties. There's also a chance I'll get it. It does run in families, but other than that, from what I've studied about it since, it can affect anyone - its actually a viral thing. :confused: :confused: So who knows!!! They have done a lot of research in it the past two decades, so I'm sure much has changed.

Either that, or some young Jewish guy, got it on with a Christian gal and there went the bloodlines!!!

Well, you see, I have a problem with people who claim to be christian and then go around tormenting small animals and his little sister, in addition to repeating hateful rheteric he picked up from his father. So, personally, I don't think he is as good a christian as he claims.

I know you meant that as a joke, but just to clarify, the majority of Mormons are not polygamists - in fact they're against it and hate the small number of offshoots who continue to practise it. ;) (Hate giving a whole group of people a bad name for the sake of a few nutjobs - just like Muslims)!! ;)

Well, I've never considered myself a Jew, but I am a descendent of a Jew. My Great-great grandfather was a Jew when he came to this country. He converted to baptist and became a Southern Baptist Preacher. My family has been southern baptist ever since.
