View Full Version : Thoughts On Jerry & Millie
SawgrassSteve 04-25-2005, 10:09 AM I've notice for many years that Jerry & Millie Helper were never as good a match as Rob & Laura were. Has anyone else? If so, do you think this was intentional, or that it just evovled that way for the sake of comedy?
Steve
TripperFan 04-25-2005, 11:21 AM I'm sure it was done on purpose. Actually, there marriage appeared more like most people's marriages I think. Rob and Laura were exceptional.
btw - how come the address in the pic is wrong? Jerry & Millie lived at 146 Bonny Meadow Road not 150!! Rob & Laura were at 148.

TripperFan,
It was an educated guess, since I couldn't seem to find the episode that mentions the address! By the time I did (#69, "Too Many Stars"), I'd finished my Photoshop project, and have been very busy (that also translates into "too lazy to go back and redo it").
I wondered how long it would take some dyed-in-the-wool, TDVDS fanatic to spot my goof, after I posted it. Congrats! You did it in less than an hour and fifteen minutes!
Darn!

SawgrassSteve 04-25-2005, 01:39 PM Correction  .

Nuuck, nuuck, nuuck! Not bad eh? Pretty observant!! Hope that isn't too anal!
Yeah, I'll always remember their address from the ep where Millie is auditioning for the PTA annual show and she gives her full name and address before launching into her self-written song.
"but now I'll KILLLLLLLL myself..........I'm funny that way.........."
Lolac 04-26-2005, 07:53 AM Wow, Steve, I'm surprised you'd make a mistake like that! I know, I know, you are busy. Love the correction, however! Is that picture taken in front of your house?
Lolac
SawgrassSteve 04-26-2005, 08:07 AM Is that picture taken in front of your house?
Lolac
No, Lolac, but if it were my house, I'm sure I'd have to address it, "148 Bonnie Meadow Road!" How could I not? :D

LOL! I should have known better, Steve!!!

:notworthy :bonk:
TripperFan 04-26-2005, 09:09 AM It's perfect now Steve!!! Thumbs up on the correction!!
(Reminds me of a street in my town where people are allowed to number their house whatever they want!!! #12 could be right next to #144 - its really strange!!! Luckily it's a fairly short street!!!)
Pentimento 04-26-2005, 10:08 AM I always found comfort in the fact that Millie and Jerry's marriage seemed more "normal" -- more representative of what I could realistically imagine a good marriage might be like. They fought but, as Rob explained it to Ritchie, they did love each other; they just did it at the top of their lungs. (And when they were starting to fight a little too much, it concerned them enough to seek out a marriage counselor.) For me, they provided a nice reality check, an occasional grounding of the TV version of suburban marriage when Rob and Laura took it to idyllic extremes.

Very well stated. I agree with you completely.

:notworthy You are right my friend!! (Sorry - I've got a head cold at the moment and I'm not thinking as clearly as I might normally)!!
And I fully agree with the Jerry and Millie observation. !

Thanx!!
Yesterday morning TVLand aired the ep where Rob's allergic to the cat Ritchie and Freddie were keeping in the garage. Between Rob and myself, the sneezing was in full surround sound here!!
(and now I've got Millie's stupid song running thru my head!!)
SpunkiiMonkii7078 04-26-2005, 06:16 PM I agree about the Jerry and Millie thing too! Nicely said!

mstewart 04-26-2005, 09:24 PM Jerry rubbed me the wrong way. He came off as a loud mouthed jerk.
I liked Millie. She was quite underrated. Too bad there weren't more scenes with her and Laura. They were quite funny together.

mstewart,
I totally agree. I've often felt that we were cheated out of some of the best comedy of the 60s by the powers that be, for not allowing Ann Morgan Guilbert to do more scenes with Mary Tyler Moore. Maybe they didn't want to get too "Lucy & Ethel" on us, but I think it could have been hilarious. It worked later on for Penny Marshall & Cindy Williams! Ann's comic delivery was as good as either of their's - and Dick's, in my opinion.
I also think Ann should have been offered her own series. She could easily have carried the role of the zany housewife who always comes through for her family in the end. :)

MTM does a good job playing off actresses who is the wacky one and she's the straight person. MTM's scenes with Valerie Harper on the Mary Tyler Moore Show was classic especially when Cloris Leachman was on screen. Some of the best comedy on MTM was with her, Harper and Leachman together. MTM was very good on Dick Van Dyke when her and Ann Gilbert were in a scene together. According to MTM she and Ann were very good friends on the show.

You could also tell that she really won the heart of Fran Drescher when playing Yetta on The Nanny. Fran made sure there were several references to the DVD show, Millie and even did a full skit on it once. Ann was the last character to be seen on the series finale - Fran came and got her from the powder room.
I agree that she was capable of carrying her own series. That would have been quite interesting!
Pentimento 04-27-2005, 10:10 AM I liked Millie. She was quite underrated. Too bad there weren't more scenes with her and Laura. They were quite funny together.I agree. One of my favorite episodes is Long Night's Journey into Day, when Laura and Millie were home alone all night, terrified that a burglar had been in the house and was coming back to get them. It was hysterical.
SpunkiiMonkii7078 04-27-2005, 05:43 PM I agree yet again :)
Laura and Millie were hysterical together, and Millie should have had her own series! I loved her!
I also like the episode where Laura and Millie are alone all night together. They crack me up at the end, when they bang a pot/pan thing on Rob's head. LOL!!!! The whole thing makes me laugh and laugh!

And Jessica, I'm not sure if you've gotten this far along in your collection yet, but don't forget ep #104, "Three Letters From One Wife," when Millie mails 14 letters praising Allen's and Rob's performances on a show that hadn't been aired yet  ! One of my favs!

That was one of my favorite episodes--the night Laura and Millie were alone. They had cans at the front door to tip them off that someone was coming in--I used that idea a couple of times when I was alone--they had every light and appliance on til thery blew a fuse. Millie would keep saying 'are you okay Laura' when she went into another room.
Most of the time it was Laura and Millie hanging out together and that was fun to see. Jerry was awful when he kept bad mouthing Rob's show to everyone, then say 'just kidding'.

Yeah, I liked it when Millie was scared to the max saying, "Laaaaura......LAAAAUUURRRA?" It gave you chills just thinking what it would be like in the same situation.
And I could have brained Jerry too in the episode where he was bugging Rob about the show!
Hey - where in Ontario are you? I'm in the Caledon Hills "neighbour"!!
cablejockey 04-28-2005, 01:28 PM Hi Tripperfan--I'm just west of Toronto. I have a vague idea where Caledon Hills is, north of toronto??

Yup - just north of Brampton and south of Orangeville. I'm in the "village of Caledon" at hwys. 10 & 24 (Eddie Shack Donuts IS the downtown core)
So you must be Mississauga/Oakville/Burlington area then - or north - like Guelph?
You should try to find a thread I started a couple of weeks back in Chit Chat on who here is Canadian!

I once posted a poll on this board for The Most Annoying TDVDS Houseguest. As I recall, Jerry Helper scored surprisingly high!
BTW, I have a very good friend in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He visited me in Chicago last summer, and enjoyed his time here. Now it's my turn. I can't wait to see Canada!
Steve
JudgeGarth 04-28-2005, 11:27 PM Jerry is my favorite character. I wish he'd appeared more often in the last two seasons when he was busy directing.

You're welcome up here anytime!! I think you'd like it and find Canucks pretty friendly and laid back. Give us a square of beer (24) and a hockey game and we're happy! Halifax is supposed to be very beautiful.

I don't have that epsode on tape or DVD, but I have seen it! It is funny! LOL! I don't exactly remember what happened except the show was canceled for something else, and Millie had sent the 14 letters out a little to early. How exactly did that episode end? LOL, I forget. Didn't Mel end up with the letters?? Hmmm... I must find that episode and watch it soon.

JessicaYeah, Mel intercepted the letters before Alan could see them. The funny thing was that once the show aired, and it was OK for Millie to write in, she didn't want to. She didn't like the show. :)
SpunkiiMonkii7078 04-30-2005, 06:25 PM Okay, okay. Thank you :) I was getting that episode confused with the one where Alan had the wrong script, and they had to break into his house. Okay... I was on the right track though!

hrstultz 07-15-2005, 04:22 PM Where did you get the picture of Jerry and Millie's house. Is there a picrure of Rob and Laura's house?
