View Full Version : How does it make you feel when you smile at someone and they.......
G-Force Glockstar 04-24-2005, 04:50 PM ....don't smile back or anything?
That happened to me a couple times this morning at Church and before at other places. It makes me feel stupid and embarassed :(
How does it make u feel?
Belair 04-24-2005, 04:57 PM Its abit rude when they dont, but maybe some people just dont feel like smiling,I dont take it personally.Sometimes I dont return a smile either, esepcially if I'm in a bad mood.

Yeah I agree it's rude. But yeah I guess they could be in a bad mood, but it's still kinda rude.
Hollow 04-24-2005, 05:19 PM i've done that to people a few times when i was in a **** mood. it actually makes me feel really bad. from the way i've seen it, you shouldn't feel ashamed or anything if someone does that to you, because it isn't your problem.

Yeah well it just hurts my feelings.....I'm just really sensitive.
Kay Scarpetta 04-24-2005, 08:49 PM I don't smile at people in the first place
TripperFan 04-24-2005, 10:57 PM I find it very rude. Luckily, MOST people smile back though.

I used to actually, but its not nearly as fun. ;)
vienna waits 04-25-2005, 12:29 AM well my prob isn't with smiling but I've said hi to people before in the hallways and junk and there have been times when they say nothing back. for that reason, i never say hi to anyone anymore and usually try to avoid running into people. i will definitely say hi though if they say something first. im sensitive about this too.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 04-25-2005, 01:12 AM I think its rude too. I hate customers who are like that, so then I just act towards them the way they act towards me. It kinda puts me in a pissy mood after. Whether youre not in the mood or not, you should just return the smile because it does put people in a down mood too. I dont like it when I hold the door open for people and they dont say thank you. Happened today so I was just all.. <diva>YAH YOURE WELCOME!</diva> UGH. /rant
Georgia's on my Mind 04-25-2005, 01:46 AM i rarely smile, lots of people smile randomly at me though
Belair 04-25-2005, 06:47 AM I reckon I am more friendlier online, than I am off.I dont know, people just piss me off so much lately.I cant even stand being nice to people outside, unless I know them (and LIKE them),I really dont give people the time of day anymore.I used to,but it never made me any happier.

that is really rude. once i was leaving a store and a man held the door open for me and i was going to take it because i wanted to be nice and i'd hold it for someone else. but instead the man wouldn't move and he told me very rudely to just "keep walking". well maybe he was just trying to be nice but it came across as rude. so nowadays it's hard to tell what's rude when it comes to those things.
*MIBabe03* 04-25-2005, 08:00 AM I don't smile at people in the first place
Same here.

Ugh yah that seems pretty rude. Im sure he didnt mean to come across like that, probably just waiting for someone else.. but the tone aint exactly friendly.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 04-25-2005, 08:21 PM I only smile at people I sort of know. If I know them very well I say hi. I'd consider it rude if they don't smile back because I do know them somehow. If I happened to smile at a stranger (which I never do) and they wouldn't smile back it wouldn't be a big deal because I don't KNOW them.
swedeace 04-25-2005, 11:01 PM Cravin' for Carrie: I empathize with the non-returned smile. I wouldn't take the non-reciprocated smile personally, however. I used to take many things personally, but I learned that people are thinking about other things. Usually what happens when they don't return smiles or even "hellos" later regret it or just carry on having a terrible day. When people find they smile at strangers usually livens up their day. Just be proud that YOU took initiative to smile, and "carry on smiling and the world will smile with you." It'll rub off onto others while those non-smilers blew their chance! Promise! :)

I couldn't have said it better myself!!! I used to walk with my head down because so often I'd smile or say a quick hi and get nothing back. Now, I don't let it bother me a bit. And I find by smiling at strangers - its amazing how often they do smile back. Actually, I strike up conversations everywhere. I find people are usually a lot friendlier than you think. And a lot of clerks working in stores appreciate someone brightening their day by cracking a quick joke or something. I actually enjoy going out by myself now.
I do still get annoyed at people that don't thank you for holding a door open or letting them in front of you in a car. I mean, what's that take to say thanks. And I don't go for the other things on their mind excuse for that one - it's pretty obvious when someone purposely holds a door for you. If they don't, I usually give a good loud, "you're welcome" to them.

Exactly! It does brighten up people's day. Even if they don't say anything at that moment to me, later they must be thinking, "Wow! That was nice."

I always do experiments like that where I work/take college classes. I always hold the door open for people, and *most* people either smile or say "thanks." There are a few people who don't say anything but are far and few in between. I just think to myself, "Oh well. I did my nice duty, so it's their loss."
TripperFan 05-03-2005, 12:12 PM That's the excellent attitude to have!! I won't let people get me down now like I used to! :)

A female smiled at me on my way home from work and i didn;t smile back because it caught me off guard. I rather someone come up to me and start a convo instead of smiling. Smiling at someone you don;t know is kind of goofy.

I don't think so - if you happen to make eye contact it's just a way of acknowledging the person's existence rather than turning your head away like a snob. Maybe its just easier in the small town where I live - everybody does it. Sometimes someone will say hello - or nice day isn't it? People used to do it all the time - we've just gotten so busy and wrapped up in our daily activities that I think society as a whole has forgotten some manners.
(Although I wouldn't want a child doing that without a parent or guardian with them).
steelparade 05-03-2005, 01:57 PM anyone here ever live or visit germany, austria, switzerland?
nobody smiles back over there. its considered rude and "fake" to smile at someone you dont know. very improper. it took me a month to get used to it. when i had some friends from austria come and visit me here in SoCal for a month, they freaked out on how friendly everyone was here. strange, but true...

I've heard about that in other countries. I think its the same in parts of Asia (maybe even more so).
I'm glad I live here then! Could you imagine a country where it was considered proper to stick your tongue out at strangers??! :p

Solomon's a pimp.
barwars 05-03-2005, 05:41 PM Anyways.... I smile at everyone I see. Unless I don't like 'em. But I smile whenever I see somebody I know, and when I see people I don't know.
When people make eye contact and don't smile.... then it's creepy.

lol, but my eyes won't really cross very good. I'm a little blind out of my left eye so sometimes it just floats up......know what I mean? Like a lazy eye.

"BOO" is good! And maybe even sticking the tongue out! Start a whole new tradition! (Meanwhile, they'll probably think you have Tourret's Syndrome!!)

Oh it's when someone has uncontrollable tics, spasms or outbursts. Some will swear or yell or shout out for no apparent reason. Its not that common. I first heard about it on St. Elsewhere actually and since then, some of the shows like Dateline and that have done segments on it.
