Hi, I'm fairly new to this board. I'm a big fan of BMW, I was wondering though, why did the producers have Topanga go from a really weird girl, to all of a sudden a perfectly normal girl by season 2?

She changed over the course of the first 4 seasons. Her transformation was complete in the season 4 episode "Hair Today Goon Tomorrow." If you dont have the DVD's get them. They explain alot of stuff about the show. Its really good.

I would assume they made her change so that Tapanga would be a good person for Corey to date.

Boy Meets World was never really the bastion of strong continuity to begin with!

Topanga evolved as she grew up like all of us do. I like the way the writers allowed her to evolve. I thought it was very realistic.

She grew up? She was 12 than. It has nothing to do with continuity...

Goon? I think you mean Gone

I think kids go through phases and change a lot. I had a friend who was a lot like Topanga. She changed a lot from middle school to high school.

Danielle Fishel didn't think teen girls could relate to hippie Topanga, so she asked the producers for Topanga to become more "all American girl".

Did Danielle say that herself in an interview or is that just your pov? If so, then cool. LOL.

^ThomasE, I read it in some teeny-bopper magazine years ago, but who knows how accurate those are. At any rate, I think it was the wrong decision for the character. I would have liked to see Cory try to keep up with off-the-wall hippie Topanga throughout high school/college.

I personally was relieved when she made the change. I remember Cory, Shaun and Topanga hosting the ABC saturday morning special on TGIF and Topanga came into the Matthews' living room with straightened hair and Cory and Shaun noticed something different about her. LOL. She said that this is how she wears her hair when she is not in character. Cory said that he liked it and would suggest to the producers to let her wear it that way for the show. I know that stuff was scripted and the producers probably allowed her to make the change but it was fun to see that dialogue. Personally, I thought she would have been a social outcast had she remained the same. I was glad when she changed up.

She sort of was an outcast in season one and it made it fun to see Cory be drawn to her but not really know why. When she changed she became much cooler than Cory (who was really quite the dweeb), and it was like why would she be drawn to him. Maybe that was the appeal to young guy viewers. They thought they had a chance with the hot girls in their school because a dork on TV did. :)

LOL. Silly Lily, I must say that it has been refreshing to have a conversation with you on the boards without any major issues attached. Thanks for the info.

I thought the changed was realistic. It was showing what most kids do as they get older, go from following their parents to finding out how they want to be.

Exactly! Topanga didn't change. She grew up!

Not only to appeal to young guys viewers, but the idea was also that Topanga was drawn to Cory because he was a nice guy and that's what she liked about him, he wasn't the coolest or the smartest kid. Topanga even mentions that in a Season 2 episode to her friends in one scene and Cory was even embarrased and later explains to her that guys don't want to be seen as nice or just good, but tough, cool or "good with tools", but Topanga just liked Cory for who he was and I think that was one of the major lessons on the show, be who you are, don't try to be something you're not and surround yourself with people that accept you for who you are. Of course, in junior high and high school, we know that can often be easier said than done.

I agree, but it's also ironic how the writers let Eric DE-evolve into a complete moron in a very unrealistic manner. But yet he ended becoming the single funniest character on the show and got some real personality after he turned into a crazy ******, so I can't really complain.
