It's really time for 8 simple to go. I just don't see it getting any better due to the MAJOR hole that had to filled.

Here's where I disagree. I think 8SR has found itself more than people give it credit for. The problem is most people have stopped watching it, and have not noticed how the show has gotten better throughout the year. The addition of Adam Arkin as Prinicpal Gibb has given the show something interesting, too. I thought the past couple of new episodes were some of the best of the year.

Is this just your opinion, or did you get this from somewhere ?

Strictly my opinion. Some I'm more certain of than others.

Like I said before, I am not here to debate whether the show will get cancelled or renewed. I am just here to tell you what the critics are saying. You read the USA Today, story, and here is a couple of more stories I read yesterday on the season finale :

'Rules' and 'Perfect' may have their swan songs tonight

Two TV shows have their season finales tonight. Signing off before the May ratings sweeps is never a good sign. It indicates the networks don't have much faith in these series' drawing power.
"8 Simple Rules" winds up its third season at 8 on ABC with Katey Sagal's character telling her family that she's going to start dating.
The story line comes almost two years after John Ritter, the star of the show, died. The sitcom was never going great guns from its start in the 2002-03 season when it managed to rank 42nd.
It did a little better when more viewers tuned in out of sympathy and curiosity after Ritter's unexpected death. The producers brought in James Garner to give the series a lift, but by the end of last season it had slipped to 50. That was still good enough to bring it back this season, but as of last week it had fallen to 94 in the Nielsen standings, which is cancellation country.
ABC has had a lot of success this season with such new dramas as "Desperate Housewives," "Lost" and "Grey's Anatomy." But no new sitcoms have caught fire in the ratings. It's still remotely possible that "Rules" could get renewed, but more than likely tonight's episode will be the last one.

I've just sent emails to all those addresses that you posted. I sure hope it helps. I've told them all that I thought it would be what Mr. Ritter would've wanted, and that how much I'd love to see them go for another season. which happens to be the truth. But I know in this business, they look for ratings and $$$$$. so we'll see what happens.
By the way, did anyone happen to see the season finale last night? I really thought that the kids would've taken it a lot harder when Cate announced that she and principale Gib were 'offically dating'. I have to admit, I was hard for me to watch, after all, I think it's safe to say that were all used to seeing 'Paul' and 'Cate' together, but I understand that lifedoes go on, I would just think that it's a little too soon for 'Cate' to start dating again. I'm not saying that they shouldn't eventually write in a love interest for her ever again, but at lest for Pete's Sake, give it some time before jumping in again. I mean really, do any of us see or hear anything about Amy Yasbeck dating yet? Nope. The thought hasn't even crossed her mind. Not that I'm sure that she'll never date again, but it's too soon for her, and also she has a little girl to think about first.

Tonight's Must-See

"Sheer Dallas" debut, 10 p.m., TLC. At the Miss Dallas County pageant, a contestant is asked an easy question: "What makes you most proud of the state of Texas?" She could have discussed the state's rich tapestry of music or literature. She could have invoked its can-do cowboy spirit. Instead, she said: "I have to say the size. We are one of the biggest states and have one of the largest populations and I think that's just amazing."

If this amuses you, you'll enjoy this reality show set amid Dallas' wealthy and well-known and narrated by Larry Hagman. It depicts a land where the 1980s never ended. Many Americans reverted to flat hair and drab colors but the people shown here prefer big and brassy. Realtor Carolyn Shamis is 62 but works to look half that age. She drives exotic cars and wears fancy gowns while selling mansions. Billy Scoggins is mocked for being a handsome heterosexual in an upscale hair salon. He challenges a colleague to lose weight. We see them tonight as they prepare for the pageant. One contestant worries about the facial reactions of judges. She doesn't know that one judge's face is frozen by a recent botox injection.



Of Note

"Joan of Arcadia," 7 p.m., CBS. Joan is still upset at Adam for cheating on her with Bonnie. Now Adam wants Joan's support but she's reluctant.

"8 Simple Rules," 7 p.m., ABC. First is the season's final episode with Cate (Katey Sagal) admitting she's dating the school principal (Adam Arkin). Then there's a rerun with C.J. (David Spade) trying to date two women on Valentine's Day.

"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (2001), 8 p.m., Disney Channel. The first half-hour of this beloved fantasy tale is magical as a mistreated lad learns of a special fate and powers. Things slow down for a while, with too much detail stuffed in, but this still emerges as a grand romp.

"Less than Perfect," 8:30 p.m., ABC. In the season finale, a surprise birthday party for Carl turns into a surprise wedding.

"Law & Order: Trial by Jury," 9 p.m., NBC. This wraps up a crossover that began Wednesday on "Law & Order." The murder of a young lawyer, who had been having sex with many of her colleagues at the law firm, led to a complex investigation. Green (Jesse L. Martin) was shot while transporting a witness. Now Fontana (Dennis Farina) pursues the case with Kibre (Bebe Neuwirth) prosecuting. They face a crisis that endangers her career.

See, this writer makes a note to have people watch it.

But people didn't... sadly, it pulled in the usual ratings which are terrible.

People may not understand this, but it has been doing well overall this season. I think the season finale was really good,and 8SR has more of a chance of continuing than any of those other "bubble" shows. Critics usually had tuned in before John's death and liked it. Most of the critics don't like the changes. But ABC has to understand that there are still fans of the show that appreciate it. Hopefully our letters will be taken into consideration.

The one thing I do not think is fair is, yes, the ratings for 8SR has dropped the past few weeks. However, the ratings for shows like Hope and Faith, My Wife and Kids and George Lopez also have dropped and 8SR has done just as good if not better than all those shows the past couple of weeks. However, those shows are all renewed,and 8SR remains on the chopping block. It seems like a double standard for these shows.

The sign I do not like at all is that they removed 8SR from the May sweeps while most of the other ABC sitcoms including the low rated Hope and Faith remain on for May sweeps. Not a good sign at all.

I have asked this question several times, and still never got an answer. Can someone tell me why Hope and Faith is so safe for renewal when it has the same ratings as 8 Simple Rules (taking into account the 8 vs. 9PM slot) ? Why is 8SR on the chopping block, and Hope and Faith is a sure renewal ? Also, 8SR only needs one more year for syndication, and Hope and Faith needs two years. I just don't get it. Can someone explain it to me ?

I hope 8SR comes back for another season, I still like it and it's been getting better in my opinion.

No one will know until May 17th, according to the Futon Critic. For CBS, it's May 16th.

That's just terrible... worse than I thought. :eek:

I know a lot of people think they will renew 8SR for syndication purposes, but I think these finale ratings may have now sealed the show's fate. I really think it is looking quite hopeless now. :(

what ratings do other shows on other networks(NBC,UPN, FOX), average on a Friday night, if its similiar to 8 Simple Rules then I don't see why it should be canceled... if its not, then the future doesnt look good.. I hope it comes back for a 4th season, because its one of 3 shows i watch on abc....

For last fridays, 5.8/11 (households) for NBC'S Dateline, 4.9/10 (households) for CBS' Joan of Arcadia, FOX and UPN finished below ABC with UPN pulling 1.8/3 with "Star Ship Enterprise" and WB finishing last with re-runs of WILAY and Reba.

I am not sure why Less Than Perfect is never on these stupid "chopping blocks", It looks to me its in the same waters as 8SR, but I guess Critics find 8SR more fun to pick on. ABC's only Finales in April are 8 Simple Rules, Less than Perfect, Jake in Progress and Rodney, all except LTP on the "chopping block".

Without jumping on the "its cancelled" band wagon, It is not looking good. ABC have not scheduled another 8SR for weeks while "shoo-ins" According to Jim, My Wife and Kids all have. I guess if it is renewed, they will schedule some then.

Well, I guess everyone can draw their own conclusions. The thing that really gets me is that Hope and Faith got renewed so easily, while 8SR is on the chopping block. When you take the 8PM vs. 9Pm time period into account for the year the ratings are about the same. Also, 8SR only needs one more year for syndication, and Hope and Faith needs two.

By the way, Less Than Perfect is definitely on the chopping block, too. What probably will happen next year is ABC will put on another show like America's Funniest Home Videos or another show in the 8-9PM slot. Hope and Faith will stay in the 9PM slot and then either a new sitcom will be on at 9:30 or one of the Tuesday sitcoms will move into that slot. Unfortunately, that leaves our beloved 8SR out of the mix. :(

Not for nothing, but what does Adam cheating on Joan have to do anything with God? I still feel that 'Joan Of Arcadia' is just a cheap knock off of 'Touched By An Angel'. Sorry Jason. There will never be another 'Touched By An angel' no matter how hard CBS tries. I think that maybe the reason why that they haven't been doing too well, could be becuase maybe people got annoyed that they put it up against '8 simple Rules'. It's alomst like there in competition with each other.

But there still is a chance for 8SR,I'm not giving up on it at all. Critics have no say in the show,and if Hope and Faith is continuing,so should 8SR.

Um, can I ask why you think John should still be married to Nancy? What the hell do you know about there relationship? If he loved her and wanted to be married to her, than he would still be with her.Obviously, something was wrong, so they moved on. Don't comment on something you know nothing about.

I'm sorry, I just get so annoyed with John fans who hate Amy because they think she's this woman who "stole John from Nancy" and seduced him. What, you think Amy said, "Hey, marry me or I'll kill you?" John had a choice- I don't know what happened with him and his wife, but if HE made a decision to start dating Amy, then that was his choice. I hate the whole "blame the woman" mentality. The concept of the "homewrecker" who comes in and breaks up this happy marriage is degrading. IF a man (John included) cheats, it's automatically the woman's fault, right? Because she came on to him, and he had no self-control. :rolleyes: Amy loved John more than anything, and he obviously loved her. That much was made clear whenever they were together. He loved Nancy,too, I'm sure, but sometimes things don't work out. Don't blame there problems on Amy.

I don't mean to sound mean, and it's not just in reply to the above post, it's just something that I encounter a lot, and I needed to get this off my chest.

I knew John and Nancy as a kid. I used to live on the same block before moving to the east coast when I was 18. I saw how much he was in love with Nancy. I'm not saying I hate Amy. I'm not just a huge fan. I met Amy couple of times when they got married. I still keep in touch with Nancy and their kids. Nancy and John used to baby-sit me when I was little.

David Spade is a good actor, I know some people think he was like a homewrecker to 8SR,but I think he's doing a great job. I'm really tired of defending this show. It makes me sad that some people now hate the show. It was time for the show to move in a different direction. As for Amy Yasbeck,she is not a homewrecker. She is a equally good actress as John is,and they had a similar personality. We have to understand that. I don't mean to sound mean, but I'm just frustrated that people are shooting down the show just because it's not the same. I miss John just as much as we all do,and I still watch it constantly.
