View Full Version : Which Couple were the best, Gomer & Louann or Sarge Carter and Bunny?
Gomergirl 12-22-2000, 01:51 PM Hey y'all just wanna know who you think is the best couple and why.
I like Gomer and Louann! They're sooooooo sweet!
Gomer http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/biggrin.gifo you wanna go Louann?
Louann:It's alright with me as long as it's alright with you.
Gomer;Do you wanna go?
Louann http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/biggrin.gifo you?
Gomer: It's up to you!

DarleneIllyria 12-22-2000, 09:40 PM I agree with you that Gomer and LouAnn made a cute couple. They were so considerate toward each other. I'm kind of disappointed that the 2 didn't get married....
Gomergirl 12-27-2000, 01:36 PM Just because they didn't get married in the show doesn't mean that they will never get married. maybe someday they'll make a t.v. movie out of them getting married. In the movie "Return to Mayberry" did Gomer ever get married? If he did in the movie who did he marry?

east215 08-29-2004, 12:15 AM I always liked Vince and Bunny better.
dandelion wine 08-29-2004, 12:40 AM Gomer and Louann. :)
Mr. Television 08-29-2004, 12:42 AM Gomer and LueAnn were the best.
Sitcom Sally 11-25-2004, 10:32 PM I prefer Sgt. Carter & Bunny. I never completely bought Gomer & Louann; she wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer but I still couldn't see why she'd bother with such a goofball as Gomer.
Vegas Girl 12-03-2004, 06:45 PM Conversely, I didn't know why Bunny wanted Carter. He was kind of gruff, cheap, and wasn't much of a gentleman.
Sterling Holobyte 12-03-2004, 07:00 PM I thought Gomer and Luann made a sweet couple.
Sgt. Carter and Bunny were always fighting it seemed.
Vegas Girl 12-04-2004, 11:40 AM You're right. Gomer and Louann were very considerate to each other, while Carter and Bunny were often arguing...sometimes about him being cheap.
gomer_luvr 12-28-2004, 07:11 PM I think Bunny & Sgt Carter were more 'real' .. yeah they argued, he was cheap, but he was charming & nice just enough to even the scale. And that's the whole funny thing that the directors wanted in inject in our heads -to make us think "now what does she possibly see in HIM?". Just my $.02
EmpressDR 12-21-2006, 10:54 PM Bunny and Vince were more realistic. :boxing:
The ep where Bunny was steamed at Vince because he was late to pick her up for their dinner date --I can't recall where or what he was doing with Gomer, but I recalled for years, Bunny angry at Vince: "I'm starving, Vince! .. I'm wilting in this heat!..." and Vince replying "You could wrap cold towels around your wrists." SLAM! :sarah: She hung up. At the time, I was pre-tween, and thought that women ought to be sweet and nice to their men ( though Louanne took it to the extreme opposite!), and had worried that Bunny was doing the wrong thing --"be understanding," I had thought. :wallbang
Years later, I suffered the same thing --starving while waiting for a man to show up --several different men! I'd not get dressed until they arrived so I wouldn't sweat my clothes. I learned to eat a little in advance, so I wouldn't be so angry at being hungry, and so I wouldn't view HIM as my only source of food, therefore either angry or too grateful. :barf: :smash:
Gomer & Louann were the sweetest and Vince & Bunny were the funniest. Bunny had a little temper and when you put her and the sarge together, it was really funny.
Grits'n'Jowls 09-14-2007, 12:21 AM Even though it was just that one episode, I thought Sergeant Carter and "debutante" Diane (she was the one who thought Carter was a rich playboy who was in the marines just for kicks :jig:) was a match made in heaven.

Agree!
Zoneboy 01-25-2008, 02:52 AM I liked both couples but Louann's voice was so annoying and being fake only made it worse. Sgt Carter and Bunny were always fighting but still made a good couple.
It's hard to choose but I think I'll go with Vince and Bunny by default. Both Frank Sutton and Barbara Stuart were on The Twilight Zone but not Jim Nabors and Elizabeth MacRae. ;)
SarahBellum 10-22-2022, 09:12 AM I just saw the Andy Griffith episode Big Brother and Elizabeth MacRae aka Lou Ann Poovie appeared in it. She talked normally, no southern accent.

Echo that. Vince and Bunny were a perfect couple--both had a temper and made for good comedy. Gomer and Lou Ann were just annoying.
SarahBellum 10-22-2022, 04:12 PM I wonder if Jim was uncomfortable doing those scenes with her?
stevea 10-22-2022, 04:30 PM That's a good question. I kinda wondered the same thing about Robert Reed in the Brady Bunch.
I suppose they just view it as another acting job.
PF7074 10-23-2022, 12:45 PM Some gay actors can create chemistry with actresses (Rock Hudson, for instance, was great with Doris Day, Susan St. James, etc), but Jim Nabors wasn't one of them. He and McCrae were a total mismatch. If Gomer had to have a girlfriend, it should have someone like Carter's sister, plain but with inner beauty. Gomer seemed to appreciate that type more. As for Jim Nabors, the only woman he ever had chemistry with was Carol Burnett. Probably because they were best friends IRL.
Duster76 11-03-2022, 12:27 PM I think Stuart and Sutton were much more accomplished actors than Nabors who was more of a personality so they Knew how to radiate the energy of a couple. With respect to MacRae, I think she exaggerated the southern belle persona to help sell the relationship. Nabors didn't generate any real heat and he had a limited acting range so as a couple Gomer and Lou Ann seemed more like friends than two people in a romantic relationship.
stevea 11-03-2022, 12:48 PM Well, act-u-ally, Lou Ann would have been interesting with Carter. She could have gotten in some cat fights with Bunny over him.
And, yeah, Nancy Kulp or Mary Grace Canfield for Gomer! (Yeah, I know, they were both busy in other shows at the time). I don't remember who played Carter's sister.
SarahBellum 11-03-2022, 02:33 PM Yeah, Gomer and Mary Grace hit it off pretty well.
stevea 11-03-2022, 03:55 PM Yep, that was probably pre-Green Acres. Although as a character actress, she probably would have been free to do more GP.
Look at all Richard Deacon did--shuffling Dick Van Dyke and Leave it to Beaver at the same time.
Duster76 11-04-2022, 09:56 PM The Mary Grace episode puts a spotlight on one of conundrums of TAGS and by extension Gomer Pyle. How old is Gomer? We first meet him in the episode Man in a Hurry, Mr. Tucker refers to Gomer as a boy. As Gomer becomes more integrated into the series he seems more or less as a contemporary to Barney and Andy. Mary Grace being matched with Gomer clearly drives home this point, she is a woman well into her 30's and she is seen as an age appropriate match. Then we find out at the end of season 4 of TAGS that Gomer is somewhere between the ages of 18-26 and must deal with his military service obligation.

That would have been interesting if Gomer had brought Luanne, another Southern character, to Mayberry after leaving the Marines.

I'll need to keep my eye out for that episode, seems I dimly remembered the actress appearing in Mayberry in some way.

Really interesting age questions, although Jim Nabors is clearly older than the Pyle character is intended to be.

Carter's sister was great, should have become a regular, or perhaps a spin off with Mama Carter .
