I've been having alot temper tantrums lately. It's kind of embarrasing to
me because I'm in my 20's but I felt so down lately. I no one cares
about me. I try to tell my parents that these mood swings and tantrums
aren't my fault and they're like impulses but they don't believe me.
They say I just act that way to get attention. It maybe true since I only
a very small group of friends when I was in school. I was in special ed
and classified as midly ******** by the lame teachers.I miss having
those friends I could talk to. My parents were never listen to me.
I want to write a letter to one of my close friends about this
but I'm afraid I'll scare her!,Can someone here please help me?! :(

Sorry to hear that. It's a shame your own parents won't listen, but all of us here are willing :bighug:

Aw..I'm really sorry about that too. I think you should write to your friend though. They can help a lot. I have a lot of temper tantrums, but I think it's because I'm a teenager.

By the way, *Pleasant Tomorrow*, I love your avatar! He was hilarious in "Bruce Almighty".

Sorry to hear this. Normally though, you don't really have tantrums when you're depressed. Sounds like you might be having them out of frustration. My brother was also diagnosed as "borderline ********" but now that I read about ADD, I'm wondering if he was misdiagnosed back in the 60s.

The symptoms of true depression more are: a combination of some or all of the following that last for more than two weeks at a time, and especially when you cannot see any specific reason for your depression (i.e. loss of a family member):

1) a feeling of hopelessness - like things will NEVER get better
2) a change in appetite - either a noticable weight loss or gain
3) a change in sleep habits - getting too much or waking in the early morning hours.
4) feelings of inappropriate guilt
5) the inability to concentrate or make decisions.
6) thoughts of suicide
7) loss of pleasure in things that you used to like doing
8) disturbed thinking - wanting to do odd or violent acts
9) moving slowly - general lethargy

If you feel that you fit several of the descriptions above, you should go see your doctor and speak to them about it. They can get you help! Don't delay either - the sooner the better! Good luck!

When you're depressed, you do tend to be really frustrated, which could make you upset and stuff.

Hey,

I was diagnosed with dsythymic depression, which is a mild but chronic form of depression. Basically, it never goes away. I get the occasional bout of a temper tantrum here and there-- the littlest thing will frustrate me and I'll just start crying and stomping my feet like a child. Usually it passes, though. I'm glad I've learned to cope with and control my sad feelings.

I don't have 'temper tantrums' per se, but I'm very impulsive and very rude.

I just wondered because I feel this nearly every day. I never understood
I get so upset over everything.

Yes, its actually fairly common (especially with today's pressures). I've had two bouts of bad depression. First when I was 15 - 16 and the second when I was 34 - 35. Luckily the second time I recognized it early and went immediately for treatment. It really does help and its nothing to be ashamed of. Quite often its just an seratonin (sp?) imbalance (chemical imbalance) in the brain and is quite treatable. Not your fault at all. Once they get you on a good anti-depressant (Prozac worked wonderfully for me) and talking to a therapist you feel comfortable with, then you're on your way!

Good luck and let us know how its going!! Hakuna Matata!!

That was my problem (well, I should say is). Any drug labeled as an SSRI balances the seretonin in your brain and makes you feel better (hopefully). And you're not a teen anymore, so you have more options as to the drugs a doctor would give you. And there are a lot! Paxil, Lexapro, Prozac, etc. Talking to your family physician would be a good idea. If they see fit, they'll either put you on something or refer you to a Psychiatrist. I never have seen one, but you might.

Why haven't you seen a doctor if this has been going on? Don't be ashamed! Have you talked to anyone about it?

Honestly, taking that first step to get help is the hardest, but there IS truly a light at the end of the tunnel. I know I felt like I was stuck in this awful, thick fog - couldn't think clearly, didn't really want to. I didn't think there was help (and when I first got it, it was tougher - they didn't have the drugs to help like they do now - they used to actually use shock treatments in really severe cases - I had a girlfriend that had it done - around the same time I was depressed. She kept running away from home so her parents had her committed!! Worst thing they could have done, but she did get through it to.)

Therapy may be tough depending on what issues you have. I had to bring up some horrible memories and work through them again, but it was like taking this huge boulder off my chest and in even a few weeks I really was starting to feel better again. I hate seeing anyone suffer depression now.

That's how I feel. I don't want to say hi to people anymore.If I do I say
more slowly and quietly to those who say it cheerfully. I sometimes think
that people don't really want to see me or talk to me at all. :(

Yes - sounds very familiar. I'm a really social person normally and I would do that. I'd walk with my head down and hope not to make eye contact with anyone - including people that were my friends before. Then I felt like they were all "shunning me" (for lack of a better term) and that hurt too, but it was because of the vibes I was giving off. It sucks!
Yeah, definitely you should speak to your doctor, or if you work, see if they have an EAP (Employee Assistance Program). That's what I used. There's a number to phone and you speak to a counsellor who assesses your needs and then sets up appts. for you. Couldn't be easier really. You don't even need to let anyone else know about it since you're legal age.

Trust me - shopping doesn't work at all - just gets you into deeper debt which makes you feel even worse in the long run!! You look like a million bucks in all those clothes and shoes, but you feel like s%&t.

But you too Lady T - why haven't you gone for help? Even if you're under age, there's no reason you can't speak to your doctor about this. Even at that, I think if you're over 16, they don't tell your parents (you could confirm that). But again, your parents should know and want to help you - no?

Oh, I do see my GP. I've been on Paxil for...3 years now. It's not perfect (what drug is?), but can can function in society now. Heck, I can actually pet a dog now without going into convulsions of fear. He's never suggested seeing a psychiatrist and I'm glad, because I don't want to. I don't think simply sitting there and talking about it is going to help me. A psychiatrist can't make some guy talk to me or make me not panic when I think I'm getting sick and whatever they told me, I wouldn't listen to anyway. I put up walls.

ha...I think all my offline friends are doing that too me too. Well, it's just 2, but whatever. They're probably not mad at me or hate me, but it's really hard to think that way when they never reply to emails or get on IM as much as they used to. That's the pessimist in me.

You could also see if one of your folks has EAP at their work. My dad does and I *think* family members can use the services too, many times for free. Check into it.

:( And you have a lot going for you too. Moreso than I do anyway. If it persists, maybe you should ask a doctor.

Actually, I thought the same thing at first and the first time I was sent to a psychiatrist, I only went once and thought it was totally stupid. I just didn't connect with the guy.
But the second time, the only way I could get Prozac (for me it worked very well), was to be under the care of a psychiatrist. Initially I was going twice a week after work. After about 6 months it got down to once a week and after about only 9 months I just stopped going because I realized we spent more time talking about our cats than anything!!! (He liked cats too).
And oddly enough, I found the talking the biggest help of it all! It really was. It wasn't like you see on t.v.! They don't just ask you questions and make you answer them. They really do guide you yes, but also offer reasonable answers or descriptions for your feelings, anxieties, etc..
Some of the therapy you'll want to resist at first and feel stupid even about, but if you go in with an open mind, it really kicks ass! I even found myself looking forward to some of the appts. if I discovered something out about myself or fears.
I guess its up to each person, but boy, after being on both sides - I would do anything to feel like I do now! I still have my odd days, but that's completely normal. Its just now I won't ever let myself go long enough again to get help and probably won't need to because I've been given the tools to learn to cope and easily breakdown problems and sort them out. Its hard to describe really. And by the way, after stopping the 9 mo therapy I was still on the drugs for a little while - maybe 18 months in total. I've now been off it and better since Dec. 1996. I even got through my mother's death and some other bad events that year and in 2001 with relative ease.
Go for it - what have you got to lose? If it were a sore stomach or something all this time you'd go to a proper specialist wouldn't you?
Don't want to preach, just know how it CAN work if you give it a shot! ;)
