I kinda agree with you Solomon. A couple of years ago, I would've been ecstatic about this announcement. Since I bought the dvd's, Good Times is no longer a "must see" for me. Now One Day at a Time on the other hand...

I'm glad its coming to TV Land. It aired on one of my local channels latenight a few years ago but I haven't seen it anywhere since.

I'll be watching. I don't think I have any past season 4 except for the one where Keith has a drinking problem and slaps Thelma. I'll be looking forward to all the season 5 and 6 episodes. And even though I have the first four on dvd, there'll be a night when nothing else is on, I'll be flipping through the channels and stop on Good Times and watch it, even if it's an episode I have on dvd already.

Only way I'll watch is when TVLAND gets to the 5th and 6th seasons.

No, TV LAND just aired one episode of Good Times back in August of 2002 as part of Norman Lear's 80th Birthday Celebration.

I personally have mixed feelings about Good Times coming to TV Land. First I have four seasons worth of episodes on DVD, and second I am never home to watch a lot of television, but in a way, I am glad that this great show will be seen on TV Land because it will allow a new fan base for Good Times...and it will also allow people that are not interested in purchasing the DVDs to recapture this classic sitcom into their TV, VHS-Library... :)

I like Good Times a lot, but I still wouldn't say it is one of my favorite all-time shows. I'm not sure how TV Land's massive audience would accept GT. I just can't see a lot of new viewers getting into this show. Maybe I'm wrong. I suppose some Bonanza fans will have heart attacks if it interferes with the boring Western schedules.

Pros:
It's great that TV Land finally sees potential in Good Times to give it a slot in the schedule

CON:
They might put it in a crappy timeslot because of all the other shows TV Land offers

PRO:
The show has an excellent fan base and is a successful DVD release. Even "Entertainment Weekly" called it one of the best DVD releases in one of their issues

Because it's on DVD, it will lose viewership or people may not want to wait a day or two for something they can watch for free on DVD.

With an eviction notice over their heads, the Evans family scrambles to come up with $74 dollars needed for their rent. Despite Florida's opinion, James goes down to the pool hall to try to hustle some money, J.J. comes up with a scheme of his own and Florida and Willona go down to the welfare office.
6:30a #004 – God’s Business Is Good Business
An old friend of James, who is now a shady televangelist, stops by the Evans apartment and offers James a job that would pay $100 a day. James is set to take it, however, Florida is dead set against James accepting the job, believing the job goes against his morals and values.
7:00a #005 – Michael Gets Suspended
Michael comes home from school early one day with the announcement that he has been suspended. This, after telling his teacher that George Washington was a racist. James and Florida become determined to prove to Michael that he's wrong.

You can defintely find season 1 and 2 of Good Times on DVD on ebay or amazon.com You may not being able to find it in the stores anymore but you will always be able to find them online.

The one thing that might be good about this, is the fact that some younger viewers and casual viewers might now get to see it and enjoy it.

I'm glad Good Times is coming to Tv Land. I know most of the seasons are out on dvd, but I only have seasons 2 and 3 on dvd and don't plan on buying anymore season sets. I've never seen the last 3 seasons and it will be interesting to see what Good Times was like after John Amos left the show.

The only eps I liked was when J.J and his friends and they would sing stuff like,

"United we stand, United we fall, were tighter than pantyhoses two sizes small"-LOL_LOL

I do remember that one. LOL. Other things I did not like about season five were:

Thelma's voice change. She talked in a whiny voice constantly.
J.J. was insulting her too much. She would still get her digs in but I wanted her to do more.

Good Times Launches on TV Land with 48-Hour Marathon Beginning July 23


NEW YORK, July 11 -- TV Land will launch the ground-breaking
comedy Good Times to the network with a 48-hour marathon beginning Saturday,
July 23 at 6 a.m. (ET/PT). Developed by Norman Lear, the sitcom was a spin-off
from the hit series Maude and made its mark in television history as one of
the most unforgettable comedies of its time. Good Times will air in its
regularly scheduled timeslot of 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. Mon.-Tues; Thurs.-Sun.
beginning July 25.

"Good Times had a truly tremendous impact on our culture and has remained
a beloved show," states Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land and Nick at Nite.
"It drew attention to controversial issues from an African American
perspective, yet at the same time delivered comic relief."
The series, which premiered on CBS on February 1, 1974, was set in the
projects on the South Side of Chicago and follows the lives of the Evans
family as they tackle such hardships as financial problems and discrimination.
Florida Evans (Esther Rolle) is the quick witted matriarch of the household,
while her loving husband, James (John Amos) is the breadwinner and proud
father. Together, their successful parenting skills instill value, pride and
morality in their three children who are often bickering. J.J., the eldest
son, is an aspiring artist who became an instant hit with his catchphrase

Well, it's 48 hours so they could only choose 96 half hour episodes for the marathon. They'll probably show "A Place To Die" eventually. If they can show "the Judy Cohen Story", they'll show anything.

I'm also hoping this marathon will introduce younger viewers or those who have forgotten about GOOD TIMES to the show all over again. Especially those of us who have the dreaded DISH and not TVone! :mad: I have all 4 season sets, but haven't caught the last 2 seasons of Good Times in years, so it will be something of a treat. I remember liking the 4 part Penny abuse episodes, thought they were well done for the time. We'll see how they've held up. Now if TVland would get MAUDE or ALICE or something we REALLY haven't been able to see in years. Oh, well . . . :wave:

They gave the most pivotal/popular episodes the best spots for maximum exposure. The multi-part season premieres The Big Move, the Evans Get Involved and Florida's Homecoming were all special episodes, so it makes sense to switch things around a bit to have the most viewers for those episodes instead of maybe showing them at 3 in the morning.

Good Times must be doing really well for TVLand. Have they ever done a 48 hour marathon of a show twice, and just a few months apart at that?

I like Good Times and all its justs I have seen them every time they have aired on TV Land. This will make 4 or 5 times now in just 3 months. I will be sure to stay away from it so I don't get over sick of it.

Yeah, it is doing very well. I think there have been a few times where marathons re-aired, but off the top of my head I can only think of Facts of Life on N@N.
