View Full Version : Anyone else think TV Land is going downhill?
Tweety 03-20-2005, 05:11 PM All I can say is, thank God for DVDs!
I think that TV Land is getting really bad. Not just because they're putting on a lot of shows that I don't like, but now THEY'RE getting into the "reality" game with this ridiculous "Chasing Farrah" show. btw, Farrah looks a little coked-out in the preview I've seen of the show...she looks terrible. Yes, she was a beautiful woman once, but that was 30 years ago...
The TV Land award shows are totally pathetic. And these categories? I mean, was there any doubt that Roseanne would get the zinger award she got, since William Frawley is dead and the girl who played Dee on "What's Happening" (both superior comic performers to Rosanne) weren't AT the awards show? (That's the only part I saw, I didn't even know it was on, I was checking to see what was on TV land at the time, and they announced the nominees for the "award"). Point being, n order to receive an award, you have to (A) be alive AND (B) show up to the award show.
TV Land used to have a lot of my old favorites like "Gomer Pyle" "Petticoat Junction" "Family Affair" and "My Three Sons" (not to mentin "Get Smart" and the "Mary Tyler Moore Show").
And the weekends...they used to run good shows on Saturday morning, now all they do is run these Entertainment Tonight repeats, 60 Minutes "Legends" interviews, and specials about TV Land "Moguls"...who cares, I just wanna watch Dick Van Dyke!
This afternoon, they're running "Gunsmoke" marathon... even though I'm not a Gunsmoke fan, at least it's an older show that was popular for a long time... But all they show during the afternoons on Sat and Sunday are Westerns...
That's why I say, thank God for DVDs...now at least we can buy a lot of our favorite old shows and watch em whenever we want...who needs TV land?
Plus, I'm doing a lot more reading these days...so TV Land's going downhill isn't a totally bad thing i guess!
GARFIELDKOOL 03-20-2005, 06:13 PM TV Land does suck. I don't wacth anything on there now. I have the first 5 seasons of Sanford and Son on DVd and there is no need for me to watch their edited programs. The TVLand Awards are crap because it is scripted. The categories are stupid and they know who they want to win. I thought that was horrible to have William Frawley and Dee in the same category as Roseanne. They nominate these people knowing they are not there to accept the award. What if William Frawley did win the award? Who was going to accept it?
TVFactFan 03-20-2005, 06:31 PM TV LAND is A$$-LOL The Awards was HOrrible, the Saturday and Sunday 2pm-8pm schedule STINKS with those dumb Westerns. They hold on to the same damm shows for years like Happy Days, and Sanford and Son. Why continue airing Sanford and Son when all but one season is on DVD? I don't watch anything on TV LAND anymore.
WilCap 03-20-2005, 07:13 PM Nick at Nite is the one that has gone down hill... i can still stand TV Land... but Jeffersons need to return
TVFactFan 03-20-2005, 07:19 PM Nick at Nite is the one that has gone down hill... i can still stand TV Land... but Jeffersons need to return
N@N has gone UPHILL!!!!! They decreased the numbr of times the Cosby Show was shown at night, got rid of Coach and added the Fresh Prince and Who's The Boss. TV LAND has added nothing but CRAP!!!!
Pavan 03-20-2005, 07:38 PM The "new" TV Land is coming this summer. So hold on, I think most of you will be very happy. Starting this June with two huge marathon weekends that will not just be one show. Then two new shows launch in July and August and one in November.

I hope so. I'm willing to give TV Land another chance for all the good times it gave me. My main complain now (Yes I'm human, I complain alot) are all the special graphics they use in the corner of the screen. It's like just let the show's air without additional special effects. But I won't complain much if the schedule is good. I want to love TV Land again.
And like Tweety said "Thank God for DVDs". I don't know what I would have done, if a lot of my favorites hadn't been released.

Great.
TV Land is at an all time low in my opinion, atleast since I've been watching. I don't even turn it on anymore and it used to be on my TV almost all day.
Pavan 03-20-2005, 08:37 PM Pav do you think I will be Happy?
I think so.
James"Thunder"Early 03-20-2005, 08:44 PM It's not good right now, but I not worried because it is going to get good.
Tweety 03-20-2005, 09:17 PM It's not good right now, but I not worried because it is going to get good.
I guess it does sometimes run in cycles..
But it is definitely at an all time low now...
pavanbadal, i'm a little confused with your comment... will TV land be putting some of the old classics back on, or are they going to bring in more recent stuff? Or will there be another TV Land network springing up?
You've got me wondering!
My wife and I "discovered" TV Land in about 1997 or so when we were on vacation in the Carolinas (We live in Florida). It was great seeing My Three Sons, Family Affair, and a bunch of other old shows that we grew up watching, and we loved... Hopefully, they'll be back
TripperFan 03-20-2005, 10:41 PM I totally agree - both TVLand and N@N are terrible right now! I used to look forward to Friday nights I would actually nap so I could stay up super late watching my favorites!
I don't know why they've been "coasting" for so long. I really look forward to new changes. I barely watch them anymore.
Chasing Farrah sounds like its just their version of VH1's Anna Nicole! A total train wreck. I'll probably tune in but more out of sheer curiosity (like craning to checkout a car accident)!!
Lets keep our fingers crossed and keep posting messages on their boards - maybe they'll finally get the message!
Adamantium 03-20-2005, 10:50 PM not only tv land, but practically every station has gone downhill.
That's a good point. I used to love when USA showed short lived shows in the mornings. That's when I became the big "Wings" fan I am now. That was the only long running show they aired back then. Others included; Jesse, Working, Ned & Stacey, Hearts Afire, The John Larroquette Show and a few others.
A&E used to air Night Court and NewsRadio.
TBS is another channel that used to be great but now is unwatchable for me.
The Family Channel, which is now ABC Family, which hardly even shows family programming.
This is not a good time to be a cable channel.
Mr. Television 03-21-2005, 12:47 AM tbs used to air old classic tv shows too back in the 80's and 90's. i remember watching the color episodes of bewitched and gilligan's island every morning at 5am. i also remember watching sanford and son, the beverly hillbillies, and the andy griffith show every afternoon/early evening. the list goes on but those are some examples of what tbs used to be. sadly, all tbs airs now is just today's sitcoms. yuck.
unfortunitely, time has a way of making things become ugly (just asked my husband, he's thinks i'm not as handsome as i once was) :( and that is what time has done to almost every network, imho.
TBS was a great channel back then. I wonder what sitcoms they will air in the future with so few hit ones coming out now?
WilCap 03-21-2005, 01:32 AM What exactly is going to be on the "New" TV Land?

I don't know...I'm pretty pessimistic about it. It'll probably be stuff that they've either tried before or stuff I don't like. That's it 99.9% or the time anymore. Yay for tapes of the old TV Land and DVDs.
Pavan 03-21-2005, 11:44 AM What exactly is going to be on the "New" TV Land?
I posted some hints on this thread...

More info soon.
Chain Gang Member 03-21-2005, 11:46 AM Nick @ Nite sucks.Look at the line up.Full House,Roseanne,Fresh Prince of Bel Air,Murphy Brown. They need shows from the 70s & 80s back on

Three's Company isn't going to be effected by the changes is it? :(
Tweety 03-21-2005, 12:29 PM Pav, the links you had in your comment had to do with Three's Company and 8 Simple Rules....
Are these the two shows you're talking about, by any chance?
Are we coming up on the anniversary of Ritter's death? My guess is that that's why the marathon may involve those two shows. I'm not a big fan of either show, but I know they are very popular these days... 3's C is already a part of TV Land's line up...
Now, if that's the case (a marathon honoring Ritter), that's another reason I'm thinknig less and less of TV Land... When a true legend like Tony Randall died, we got a whopping FOUR episode "mini-marathon" of Odd Couple Episodes (could have been for licensing reasons, though)... in any case, I thought Randall deserved better...he was truly a legend, not only in TV, but in movieland also...

Does the "new" in quotes mean that they are going back to putting on some of the old (as in 50s and 60s) classics?
Or are we looking at more recent stuff?

Brent88 03-21-2005, 12:57 PM I think I speak for everyone when I say... IT'S DRIVING ME UP THE WALL!
But Pav can't say anything. He can get in trouble for saying as much as he already has. He could have just not told us at all(which I think would actually have been less agonizing ;) )
James"Thunder"Early 03-21-2005, 01:45 PM I'm hoping that these shows are 70s and 80s. As far as I can tell most of this stuff is new to TV LAND and a lot of 50s and 60s has aired on TVLAND already.
WilCap 03-21-2005, 02:48 PM NaN needs to go back to the ninties... there line up now sucks... at least n 90's i watched it... it was actually good..

Now I can't wait! I hope it's something good for a change :)
A reality show doesn't belong on TVLAND even if it's about Farrah
treky 03-21-2005, 04:44 PM I still like TV LAND. It's NICK AT NITE that I can't stand anymore.
Dean Winchester 03-21-2005, 04:54 PM I understand both sides, but I don't see the need to bash more recent sitcoms to make the oldies look better.
Like it or not, Roseanne deserved to win, she was brilliant. Just because she isn't dead or that it hasn't been 30+ years since she left the airwaves doesn't mean she wasn't great. Seinfeld was only off the air for 4 years when TV Guide called it the #1 series of all time... people tend to overemphasize on the oldies and not actually recognize the contemporary classics, shows like Roseanne, Seinfeld, Frasier, Friends are going to be in 30 years what Bewitched, Lucy, Beverly Hillbillies and Andy Griffith are these days, you might hate that, but it's true.

So the what's gonna happen to all the oldies? N@N has completley pushed the old classics out of the way. Most other channels seem to just show sitcoms from the 80's and 90's. We need N@N and TV Land to be different from all the other channels.
And by the way, I don't believe the TV Land Awards count on our votes. It has nothing to do with Roseanne. I'm not sure who all she was against, but I believe she deserved to win. I think TV Land knows who's gonna win when they're coming up with the category.
Chad22 03-21-2005, 05:19 PM TV Land is crap.
I Was already losing interest in older shows for more Modern shows...But then they went and moved all the shows I Like into horrible timeslots and Put Stupid Westerns On Like 75% Of the time.

Now I'm getting giddy. And you better not be tricking me, pavan. Can you at least give us a larger hint (comedy or drama? which decade?)
Don't let PAV get your Hopes Up.
The Modfather 03-21-2005, 09:00 PM TVL Canada is getting better. They just added Batman a couple weeks ago, so I love watching it everynight at 9:30. I also like how they don't have ANY westerns.

Same here! We've got Expressview in our home theatre room and Dishnet and Rogers in the family room. I'll go to the family room to watch TVLand (Cdn. version) more and more often.
Tundra Wolf 03-21-2005, 09:27 PM Yeah, TV Land is terrible now. They barely show the shows I like anymore. And on weekends all they show is Westerns. WTF? We want some good old fashioned sitcoms!!! I barely even watch TV Land anymore... just to watch Leave it to Beaver. Glad they kept that :)
Tweety 03-22-2005, 12:42 AM Information will be available soon. Be patient.
No problem...btw Pav, what is it that you do? I've seen your posts for a long time, and was wondering how you always get the inside scoop on things...
Can you tell us what your connection is? If not, that's ok...we all appreciate you keeping us up to date!
treky 03-23-2005, 03:41 AM TV Land is crap.
I Was already losing interest in older shows for more Modern shows...But then they went and moved all the shows I Like into horrible timeslots and Put Stupid Westerns On Like 75% Of the time.some people like me, and everyone I've talked to, LOVE the old westerns!!
In fact, I RARELY used to watch "Gunsmoke" when I was growing up (I'm 47) so I'm THRILLED that TV LAND is showing it! And, even more thrilled that they plan to keep showing it for a LOOOOONG time!!!! party: (I read that on another website)
I also love watching "Bonnaza".
rodwayne 03-23-2005, 11:46 AM I could't agree more!Actually BOTH channels suck!T.V. Land so hell bent on pleasing the 18-34 year old audience as well as Nick At Nite, they get rid of the classics in flavor of putting on triesome shows. The LAST thing we need is another reality show EVEN if it's about Farrah.WHO CARES!?!And the relentless repeats of Gunsmoke,Bonanza is DRIVING me crazy!!!They have ran Leave It To Beaver to the ground as well as all of their other shows. As I said in a previous post "why can't they stick with doing classics" and the HELL with what some whinning spoil-brat 20 something have to say about a channel that is suppose to be about CLASSICS!They want reality;there other networks out there that shows such nauseateing thhings.A classic network is ONLY SUPPOSE TO SHOW CLASSIC!!!I just hope this new line-up goes back to basics for heaven sakes!
Dean Winchester 03-23-2005, 01:39 PM A classic network is ONLY SUPPOSE TO SHOW CLASSIC!!!
and Roseanne and The Cosby Show AREN'T classics says who?
There are actually shows after 1980 that can be called classics, those 2, Cheers, Seinfeld, Family Ties, one can argue Night Court. A classic tv show defies decade.
Now I must agree with you with shows like Full House, but there are shows that the youngest cast member isn't now in their 40's that are definately classics
spunkygirl 03-23-2005, 03:37 PM Yeah classic doesn't always mean old, I think of it as a show that can withstand the test of time. Just because it's a 90's show doesn't mean it can't be a classic as well :)
Tweety 03-23-2005, 05:28 PM btw, my OTHER problem with TV Land is the way they keep repeating the same episode twice a day... I like Leave it to Beaver, for example, and it ticks me off when they show an episode at 12:30 in the afternoon, and then repeat the same episode in the evening.... they do the same thing with other shows.
They also repeat the same Cheers episodes at 3 am as they just showed at midnight (EST, that is)... The All in the Family ep. shows at 1:00 am EST is the same one they showed at 10:30 pm...
TV Land sucks... Nick at Nite has sucked for a much longer time...
Adamantium 03-23-2005, 05:42 PM some people like me, and everyone I've talked to, LOVE the old westerns!!

I don't like Westerns, but I'm not opposed to them airing on TVLand. The only thing I don't like about them airing Westerns are the blocks they show of them on the Weekends. Westerns (the ones on TV Land) are hour long shows. They don't need to be back-to-back, especially on the weekends, when the kids are out of school.
My Dad loves watching Westerns, though.
Adamantium 03-23-2005, 05:47 PM As for the classics, there can be modern classics. However, we see enough of those shows on other channels. We DON'T see many older classics anywhere. It's important to show shows from all of the decades.
Whenever the older customers come to the store (I'm a bagger) we'll sometimes talk about the old classics, and they're surprised I have heard or and seen the old shows. I always tell them, I was raised on Nick at Nite.
TripperFan 03-23-2005, 11:22 PM btw, my OTHER problem with TV Land is the way they keep repeating the same episode twice a day... EXACTLY!!! That's my biggest beef with them too! Even when they run the marathons they'll pull that!
Maybe I'm alone, but I'm just not interested in Farrah's new "reality" show. I'd rather see some "older" programs again.
I don't watch TV Land much anymore. I did watch part of the TV Land awards to see the tribute to Aaron Spelling. Amazing that while he has produced so many hours of TV, TV Land isn't airing any of his programs at the moment, I don't think.
barwars 03-24-2005, 07:33 PM Recent and even current shows can be just as much classics as those from the 50s and 60s.
In response to ABC1...
That pisses me off as well. Hotel and/or Hart to Hart, maybe even Family or The Colbys could EASILY just slide in on the schedule somewhere. But nope, they want to air Wings and Cheers and others all afternoon long, in timeslots that, traditionally, have been meant mainly for dramas and other hour-long shows...
Pavan 03-25-2005, 11:03 AM TV Land has made a brief announcement today on their first two of six shows coming in 2005 and 2006. Good Times joins the lineup in July and Night Court in August. See their respective boards for more info and exact dates! Another sitcom will debut in November. Think 70s. That is all I'll say for that one. Three more sitcoms will come in 2006.
ClassicComedyFan2 03-25-2005, 12:16 PM I think TV Land is not exciting anymore, because of the lack of schedule changes. Why, two years ago, shows left and joined their lineup on a regular basis, keeping the station fresh and exciting. Now...it and N@N are both static and humdrum...with only a few good shows that I really like.
Night Court? Good Times? Hmm...this 70s/80s trend is...hopefully, not the new direction. I just prefer, overall, the great escapist comedies of the 60s. And, what has TV Land done with Batman?

I have most of GT on DVD, so that isn't a big deal.

TV Land is bringing in a lot of shows that have not been seen on cable for a long time (I know Good Times is probably the only exception and Night Court was on Biography last year, but many people don't get it). TV Land is focusing on 50s-80s -- very broad range. You will like what they will do in June, so stay tuned...
Batman expired last month.

July is way too far away for regular schedule updates. Three's Company has been on 11p-12a since last May, so it is doing well there, and even if it is moved or one of the half hours is removed, it still lasted a long time.

Pav the only people who would get excited about TV LAND acquiring GT is those who
1.don;t have a DVD PLayer
2.doesn't have Comcast cable or Directv.
Pavan 03-25-2005, 06:39 PM I have Comcast and I don't have TV One. And I'm sure Good Times will draw an audience. Who cares if it is on DVD? People still watch the show on television. Living proof is Seinfeld and Friends.

Tara why is the news so exciting when you have the DVD's?-lol I mean I know there are two seasons that hasn't been released on DVD but I thought owning 4 out of 6 seasons on DVD would make you less excited about TV LAND acquiring Good Times.
barwars 03-25-2005, 08:24 PM Yeah I know what you mean, why spend money for the full length eps when you can just relax at home and watch the chopped up TV LAND versions for free.
I'm hoping this is sarcasm.

 I was being facetious Solomon  Actually I am indifferent about TV Land airing Good Times, for one, I never watch tv anymore, and if I want to watch a favorite program of mine, I pull out the DVDs...
Brian Damage 03-25-2005, 08:26 PM I agree with you somewhat Solomon. Although GT is on DVD and TV one, alot of people either don't have TV one or collect dvd's. The show might do well. I hope somewhere in the marathon they have a special about GT and get Norman Lear on to once and for all end the fued about whether it is a spinoff or not.

Of course-lol
robyrob 03-26-2005, 01:03 AM they'll probably put GT in some ridiculous timeslot anyways...
but what HAS made me happy about TVLand is that I get to watch SCTV right NOW :)
IGNTBone 03-26-2005, 03:49 PM I'm looking forward to Night Court. It'd be fun to see it again, after watching syndie repeats on FOX 5 NY in the late 80s - early 90s.
In an update since I first posted this.... Pav, I know you can't say anything, and I don't expect you to answer this, but if it's alright, I'm just going to throw out a hunch on the yet-to-be-named 70s acquisition....
'What's Happening!' If I turn out to be correct, man, would that rule.
PS - If I broke a board protocol with this, I profusely apologize!
treky 03-26-2005, 08:47 PM I WAS glad when I heard that they're showing "SCTV". But after watching it once, I'm not. It's not as funny as I remember. In fact, last night, I turned it off after 20 minutes.

I know what you mean Treky... I didn't see the SCTV stuff (although I remember it well from the mid-late 70s, when it was on Saturday night, right after SN Live...or was it right before? ) Anyway, that's happened to me many times... I hear TV Land or Nick at Nite would be putting on a show I remember liking, but somehow, it's never quite as good the second time around... "Rowan and Martin's Laugh In" is such a show...loved it when it was on (I was 8 or 9)... but when Nick at Nite brought it back in the late 80s, it just looked really stupid... a few decent jokes here and there, but not nearly as good as I remembered... I guess "here come da judge" is only funny when you're 8...
I remember SCTV as being a very "uneven" show when it came to humor... some shows were very funny, others were disappointing... my friends and I used to (audio) tape the show, just in case there were any good skits we wanted to memorize...sometimes the show was good, sometimes it wasn't.
treky 03-28-2005, 12:40 AM when it was a half hour, it was shown in sydnication, and some cities showed it right before "Saturday Night Live", some cities showed it after. Then when NBC started showing it in 81, they expanded it to 90 minutes, and put it on Fridays, right after Johnny Carson.
As for "Rowan and Martins Laugh-In" I remember reading somewher after N@N stopped showing it in the late 80s, that that was the exact reason-people didn't think it was very funny anymore.
Chain Gang Member 03-28-2005, 03:16 PM July is way too far away for regular schedule updates. Three's Company has been on 11p-12a since last May, so it is doing well there, and even if it is moved or one of the half hours is removed, it still lasted a long time.
I guess that answers my question. Thanks Pav
MikeClassicTVFan 03-30-2005, 04:52 PM TV Land has made a brief announcement today on their first two of six shows coming in 2005 and 2006. Good Times joins the lineup in July and Night Court in August. See their respective boards for more info and exact dates! Another sitcom will debut in November. Think 70s. That is all I'll say for that one. Three more sitcoms will come in 2006.
