What do you think is the most underated sitcom? I've never watched this while it was on, but I've gotten hooked on reruns of Spin City. I know they won awards, but I don't remember them ever getting great ratings.

MyHyena you seem like my kinda person! :D Are you hooked on the Michael J. Fox years or the Charlie Sheen years? (I only like the MJF years :D )

I reckon FamilyTies is kinda underrated THESE DAYS. If I ever mentioned it to one of my friend these days they wouldn't know what the hell I was talking about. They screwed up this "coulda been classic" by bringing it back into syndication too early. :(

Yeah, I prefer the MJF years too. Sheen wasn't bad, but it seemed like he tried to step into the identical character that MJF portrayed. Even some of his phrases and mannerisms were the same. Like the writers had written for a couple of seasons ahead when MJF had to leave. I think Sheen should have developed a totally different character.

Chico and the Man is another series that--like Hogan's Heroes--is in hindsight being underrated cuz of the personal failings of its star, in this case Freddie Prinze. Yes, he became depressed once fame hit (or was possibly already bipolar but undiagnosed), which led to psychotherapy...which led to prescription drugs...which led to drug abuse...which all led to suicide. But that doesn't detract from his talent or that of his costar, Jack Albertson, or that of any of the regulars or guest stars or staff.

The show was unique for its portrayal of different kinds of bigotry (and resolutions to them) than the white-against-black or conservative vs. liberal bigotry that were finally being openly discussed on All in the Family. An old white man took in a young Chicano and together they overcame the "generation gap", as well as the old man's bias against Hispanics.

And Hogan's Heroes. Some people are too obsessed with politics and crap to open their eyes and see the satire.I agree that Hogan's Heroes is unjustly slam by the PC Brigade who all too often have never seen a single episode, but wasn't considered an underrated sitcom back then. It did well in the ratings, while Bob Crane was nominated twice for an Emmy for his Col. Hogan character, Werner Klemperer was nominated five times, winning twice for his Col. Klink character and the first season is now avalaible on DVD.

I think Wings is so commonly mentioned as an underrated series that it actually probably gets rated fairly

Shows I feel are genuinely underrated that lasted two or more seasons:
Gimme A Break (I wish we'd see a DVD release for this show. I know it's kinda eerie to watch now since both Nell Carter and Dolph Sweet are no longer with us, but it was a great sitcom that I'd love to revisit)
227
One Day At A Time (it was a big show in it's day but these days it is so forgotten)
Popular (Mary Cherry should've been a breakout character in the Fonz/Mr. T vein)
Roswell (could've easily rivalled Buffy if it had a longer run. The show was so good but viewers didn't flock to it, so it was cancelled TWICE)

Shows that are either low rated or rarely seen and are Good shows are to me "underrated". With that said:

Wings
Perfect Strangers
Chico and the Man
The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis
Less Than Perfect
Andy Richter Controls the Universe (Critics loved it, but hardly anyone watched)
Make Room for Daddy (In it's afterlife. Apparently it was popular in it's day)
The Odd Couple

Hard to define underrated.

WKRP in Cincinnati - only four seasons and they were all excellent. Cancelled because CBS kept changing their time slot and gave it no respect. It became a huge hit in syndication. That is underrated.

Other shows that generally did not get enough acknowledgement:

Titus

Becker - for the first 4 years at least

Wings

Mr. Belvedere

Stark Raving Mad - less than a full season, was very funny and had a lot of potential.

Scrubs - quietly one of the top sitcoms today.

Two and a Half Men

Step by Step. Even though it has the same plot as The Brady Bunch (Both shows are about blended families), I still think it's a great show. The ratings weren't spectacular, yet it managed to run for seven seasons, six on the coveted TGIF lineup on ABC. Not to mention that it helped Patrick Duffy and Suzanne Somers continue their work on primetime TV.

Wings is COMPLETELY like Cheers.
Made by the same people, built around the same idea, ran on the same network. I know because I like both.

Wings may be a spin off of Cheers- but thats where the similarity ends.

Wings has a TOTALLY different vibe than Cheers. Cheers is darker. Wings is brighter. Cheers takes place in a bar. Wings at an airport. Wings has more interesting characters. Cheers has boring, dull characters.

I love Wings, I hate Cheers. Therefore, I dont think they can be anything alike.

By brighter I dont mean the set. Im talking about the tone of the show.
In Cheers everyone is sitting a bar complaining about their problems.
In Wings its more interesting because its at an airport and you got this really
hot waitress named Helen. And two really crazy brothers. One is goofy, one is serious. But the chemistry between the characters on Wings is a lot better.

Cheers is darker comedy. Thats what I mean.

I guess we kinda look at that in hindsight.

I have to agree with Hogan's Heroes and Chico and the Man. Both shows did very well in the ratings at the time, but now are all but forgotten except by their fans (and unfortunately their detractors). I know my father in law who fought in WWII didn't care for the premise of Hogan's Heroes, but I always found it hillarious. And as for the personal tragedies of the stars of these two shows, that shouldn't take away from the contributions the shows made to TV.

In high school we used to come up with story lines and play the characters in Hogan's Heroes. And I was smitten with Freddie Prinze. I am truly a child of the 70's.

Of sitcoms on the air right now, I have to go with Less Than Perfect. It never gets any press or any mention in the media, yet it's quietly one of the best conventional sitcoms on the air, if not the best. AD and Scrubs are the best, but they are unconventional. I would have a hard time calling them underrated as well, considering the amount of press both of those shows get. They just don't have the ratings to match. The Office looks to be excellent as well.

Another sitcom right now that I consider underrated is (ducks) Hope & Faith. If you turn your brain off enough, it's surprizingly hilarious. Not smart in the least, but it consistantly makes me laugh, especially Kelley Ripa's over the top performance.

oh yea, OPINION really means they can't be.

I love Buffy, probably my fave show ever, I only thought Angel was "okay" at it's best... but I still realize they have a lot alike.

And while Wings is okay, I would agree with the consensus that Cheers was a better show. Cheers is a classic and I'm sure the cast of Wings probably wishes that their show had the type of esteem that Cheers does. I'd say that Wings was probably IMO the weakest of the shows that crew put together. You might not like Cheers, but you are nuts if you think nobody else does either.

You need to accept that your opinion is just that, a lot of people may disagree with your opinions on it. You forget to use the initials IMO, because where do you have this stand of authority to be the judge and jury that "Wings is a great show, Cheers is garbage"?

But the chemistry between the characters on Wings is a lot better.

I think Sam and Diane at the heat of their passion was a lot more fun to watch than Joe and Helen.

And while you're using Crystal Bernard's hotness to defend Wings, what about Kirstie Alley? she was considered one of the sexiest women around back in the day, before she blew up and became a "Fat Actress"

To me, the Joe and Helen relationship was more believable and I cared more for them. Sam and Diane were funny. And in the first season I wanted to see them get together. But once they did get together, I realized how wrong they were for eachother. Also, Sam and Diane, being the stars, were the main focus of the series, whereas, Joe and Helen's relationship was more subtle and just a part of the series.

And since this seems to be turning into a Wings versus Cheers thread, my support goes to "Wings"! It didn't try to become a classic, it was happy doing what it did - entertain people and make them laugh, cry and whatever other emotions there are.

Sure, Cheers is more popular, but that doesn't make it better. It just means more people watched it. I go by what I like, I don't care if I'm the only one watching. If I think it's good, then I'll defend it against any mainstream hit.

No one I've met has ever had a bad thing to say about "Wings" other than never having seen it. Yet I know a bunch of people who can't stand "Cheers". I was one of them for many years. Although I like "Cheers", I never got into it or loved it as much as I do "Wings".

Just a bit off the topic from the wings vs. cheers debate  I'd like to say 3 (IMO) 3 very underrated sitcoms

1. Maybe its me - This was one of the FUNNIEST teen comedies (btw it only lasted ONE season). I love the main character (Molly I think her name is) and her crazy family. I especially love the way she actually acts like a normal teenager and I can semi-relate to her (everything but the wierd family part) Its also quite unpredictable. One part in The wedding and a funeral episode where I was practically rolling around laughing was when Molly's putting her two twin sisters to bed (by the way there cousin on one side is getting married to their grandfather on the other side or something [didn't see the whole episode :p ]) anway and tthere asking about a million questions per hour along the lines of "If grandpa marries Tillie, will that make dad our uncle?" And then Molly explains the whole thing slowly to them and one of them goes "Your a good sister Molly, Thanks." and the other one hands her some money and says "This is for your trouble." and at first Molly looks dumb founded and semi-horrified and the next second she just shrugs and walks off with the money. :rotflmao: i loved that.

2. Two and a half men - I don't really like Charlie Sheen that much but I watched an episode of this show the other night and it was really funny. I love the little kid in it. He's funny without being a precocious little brat. I think puberty's going to be cruel to him though...

3. Scrubs - Best comedy on TV at the moment and they don't even show it any more in Australia.

Wings is a spin off of Cheers. It was produced by the same folks, and it takes place in Nantucket Airport, and some Cheers characters made spots on the show, including Kristie Alley in the episode with Clint Black.

But other than that, I still FAIL TO SEE THE SIMILARITIES. Wings takes place in an airport. Cheers takes place in a bar. Wings is on a small island in nantucket. Cheers in Boston. The humor on Wings is not as vindictive or low brow as Cheers. I hate to use the darker vs. brighter comparison again but its true. Cheers comedy is more sarcastic. Wings comedy is lighter in tone, more jovial.

When I talked about chemisty, I dont mean just Helen and Joe- I mean the whole cast. Wings had an incredible cast and the characters blended in better.

Also, if the shows are so much alike, why do I prefer Wings over Cheers? If they were alike you'd think I'd like them both equally. Doesnt that make sense?

No, it doesn't.

First of all, it's not a spinoff. The two shows crossed over, but it's still not a spinoff.

Ahh yes, you're right, the humor on Cheers is low brow, that's why it received over 100 times more Emmy nominations than Wings. Real low brow, right?

hmm, did you not read my post about Buffy and Angel? two things can be similar and you still can like one more than the other.

Cheers, Wings and Taxi were all hatched from the same egg, the same writers worked on all three shows, and they have many things in common. Are you really so dense because "Cheers takes place at a bar, Wings takes place at an airport"? All three of the aforementioned shows take place largely in one environment, with a memorable group of characters who are always there. They all have their "dumb guy" (Lowell, Woody, Tony), they all have their "smart ass" (Roy, Carla, Louie), they all have their center character who is the true heart of the show (Joe, Sam, Alex). Just because Wings isn't set in a bar doesn't mean that there aren't a lot of things that they have in common. If you told the surviving writers of Wings that "the show reminds me a lot of Cheers", they'd take it as a complement.

Anyways, nobody likes two things equally. You can make sequels to movies that are identical to each other, but yet people are going to prefer one film to the other. There is no such thing as liking things exactly the same amount. Even if you thought Cheers and Wings were identical, you'd still like one more than the other.

Also, even though you don't like Cheers, I'd like to know if you've ever watched Frasier and, if you have, whether you like it or not. It's quite different from Cheers, so if you've never watched it, then it might be a good idea to give it a try.

Yeah I like Frasier but this is getting WAY off topic :p . We're supposed to be talking about underrated sitcoms. :)

Two more for the list:

1. Grounded for Life - Very underrated IMHO. Uncle Eddie ROX! And I love the unique flashback method it uses. Reminds me sorta of the Odd Couple

2. Don't know if I've mentioned this before but LANO & WOODLEY!! Very underrated. IMO this was soooo much better than Kath & Kim but didn't get half the audience. Frank and Colin are comic geniuses!

Personally, I think Cheers is a great show. I live in the UK, but I did manage to catch some episodes of Wings in the USA last summer, and I thought it was very good. Hi. No, I never cared for Fraiser at all, lol. I would even prefer Cheers to Fraiser.

Newsradio is another one.

I also like Wings better than I like Cheers, although I think both shows are classics. Wings never got the praise and respect it deserved.

Other shows that I think are underrated are NewsRadio, Scrubs, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Futurama, Two Guys and a Girl, and Becker.

The Partridge Family is the most underrated since no one ever mentions it here. Especially since it was a monster hit in the 70's, and every other online retailer who's selling the upcoming season one DVD set describes it as, "Though not very popular" Talk about not true! You've got great music, great sitcom situations, Shirley Jones, and David Cassidy. What more could you want? It sucks The Partridge Family is not getting any regular airplay on TV Land or Nick@Nite, like it did in the 90's. Especially considering this is the 35th anniversary of the show too!

I urge everyone to buy The Partridge Family Complete First Season on DVD, and the new Very Best of The Partridge Family on CD. The new CD contains four previously unreleased songs. :D

P.S. the DVD and CD are due May 3rd!

It can be popular and underrated. Oxymoron.

Sorry, but I cant stand Cheers. I mean no offense, but I love Wings, because its brighter and funnier than Cheers.

There's nothing wrong with Cheers, except for the fact that Kirstie Alley is there. I can't stand her or anything about her. That made the show suck in my eyes. But per se, there's nothing wrong with the show. I guess I just have a heart for a popular show's ugly cousin. I like Futurama better than the Simpsons; Wings better than Cheers.

I have to wonder why I like the Look Who's Talking Movies because I can't stand her or John Travolta.

It's really not fair when people base their opinions of a piece of fiction on something that happened in real life. What did Freddie's suicide take away from Chico and the Man?? Nothing; he was still funny on there. What did Bob Crane's murder and all that take away from Hogan's Heroes?? Nothing. Their characters didn't do anything. People need to learn to step out of reality and into a fairy tale so to speak when they watch fictional TV.

Ironically I actually like Christie Alley. She was hot. But the show overall doesnt do much for me. In fact, I wont say I hate it, becaues I really dont hate any show. I'm just indifferent to it.

Well then, if Cheers got all those nominations why did you list it as "underrated"? Seems to me Cheers is OVERRATED.

I wouldn't say that. I personally believe that Cheers recieved a lot of praise because it was deserving of it. (Of course, I'm biased since Cheers is my favorite show...)

Wings kills me though. It's so funny.

Well, the reason I dont like Cheers is because its depressing to me. Its basically just a bunch of losers in a bar in Boston. Its in a bar. I dont like the setting and I dont care for the characters. They just put each other down all the time. I like Wings more. I cant explain why, I just do. It just has a different vibe to it, and yeah, and the characters arent as depressing as Cheers.

Diff'rent Strokes:The frist few years at least were funny
That Girl:You wanted funny, sophisticated comedy, then this was it.
Dennis The Menace:Great comic strip, and just as great show.
Father Knows Best:Yeah,I know it was popular, but still I beleive it was overlook.
Leave It To Beaver:As close to as real kids you will ever see;and the parents actually acted like parents.
There's probably a few more, but maybe it will come to mind.I would LOVE to see the frist four come back on(and retire Leave It To Beaver)on Nite @ Nite T.V.Land. :)

That 70's Show. The whole cast is hilarious and great, yet I'm pretty sure none of them have been nominated for an Emmy, that I know of.

Yeah, I don't know. I'll have to do some research on it and see if any of them has ever been nominated. They're all so funny and talented!
