Scott Peterson sentenced to death
Jury earlier found him guilty of murdering wife, fetusNBC News and news services
Updated: 1:35 p.m. ET March 16, 2005REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - A judge on Wednesday sentenced Scott Peterson to die for the murder of his wife and their unborn child.

Judge Alfred Delucchi had to decide whether to sentence Peterson to death — as a jury recommended — or give him life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In upholding the jury's recommendation, the judge found that the killings "were cruel, uncaring, heartless and callous."

"The court is satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant, Scott Lee Peterson, is guilty of first-degree murder," Delucchi said.

Murder isn't a death penalty.
What does it matter? Either way you're dead. The only difference is one party chose to commit an act that might lead to their own death and the other party did nothing to warrant their death.
Peterson is getting what he deserved, imo.

Well said. I believe he deserves the death penalty. Too bad this is in California, we'll be lucky if they actually go through with it. If this had happened in Texas, they probably would have had him strapped to the gurney by now.

Just putting in my two cents here: Sarcasm is fine. I love dry wit. But you need to realize that not all people like that kind of humor. Also, you need to remember that a great deal of the humor in sarcasm is in the inflection of the voice. This is something that does not come through when the "humor" is given voice via the written word.

You very well may believe that your comments are tongue-in-cheek, but they do not read that way. They come across as quite unkind and/or rude much of the time.

"Sarcasm is the lowest form of humor" ~~ Oscar Wilde

The problem with sarcasm is that it's usually at someone else's expense via their feelings. Telling members on a thread that don't agree with you that they're uneducated, vulgar or calling them "brilliant" in a demeaning way doesn't even fall under sarcastic humor. It's simply a slew of insults. Nothing funny about it.

Even when something is said with biting sarcasm, someone ultimately gets offended. TJL wrote the book on funny sarcasm. It's often self-deprecating or said in such lighthearted jest, that nobody cringes while reading it, and best of all, nobody gets hurt.

Stick them with guilt until it drives them to death.

I pretty much followed everything in this case. It just sucks...People are happy that Scott's getting the death penalty and yeah, he had an affair, the jury convicted him of the cold-blooded murders, but how the hell is that going to bring Laci and Conner back? It doesn't. And as much as I feel for Laci's family, I feel for Scott's family too. They've basically lost a whole family. I'm not siding with Scott, I'm just saying that I'm considering his family's feelings. They've gotten a lot of flack, but it's not like they raised him to be a murderer. It was obviously his actions, not theirs.

I don't understand the point of the death penalty.

It's called "justice." And, when one person illegally kills another person, he or she has to account for his or her crime.
It's also the only way to prevent the murderer from killing again. (Someone sentenced to "life in prison" can still murder- a guard or another prisoner.)

Government enforced death penalty is a little different.
Government enforced death penalty is justice. What Scott Peterson did was completely different from justice.
The Government punishes a guilty person; Scott executed two innocent people.

So killing him is justified because he killed two innocent people? You are just adding more killing. Death isn't that much of a punishment for sociopaths anyways. And hate to break it to you, but this government has much error within it, so I wouldn't be so sure to trust it's ruling on anything.

I appreciate your point of view, but it still puzzles me. I don't find the death penalty "just" at all. Scott will just be one of 600+ people in San Quentin and some will eventually go free if appeals are won. Everyone else will have to wait 20+ years to be executed. There are probably convicts in there who've committed crimes worst than Peterson's and what if they get to him too? No one will say anything about the person who kills him if that ever happens, even though that person did commit an illegal murder.

Since the death penalty has been reinstated, no innocent people have been executed.

What you said is not the fault of the "death penalty." Years ago, there were no endless appeals. And believe me, Scott will never go free! The numerous appeals you are referring to are because of the liberal judges who keep granting them.
I think the law should be changed to only ONE appeal and that's it. It would save a lot of time and money.
Actually, if someone did murder Peterson in jail, that person would most likely have to stand trial for that.

He obviously has some faults in his mental processes, you shouldn't make vulgar comments about a person when you can't understand their mentality and state of being, it really does not help, just hinders the entire situation from getting any better.

Yeah. His fault was that he had no mental processes.

I was watching The West Wing once, and Josh Lyman (played by Brad Whitford) had the perfect solution for an alternative to the death penalty.

Have them stuck in jail for the rest of their lives -- watching home movies and looking through photo albums of the people they killed.

Stick them with guilt until it drives them to death.

Yeah, but then the government has to pay to keep them alive. Food, shelter, cable TV...whatever luxuries they have in jail. I don't really like the thought of my hard earned money going to pay for some worthless pile of crap like him, just to "teach him a lesson." Some people will never learn and don't even care what they did. Scott Peterson seems like just the type.

My 2 cents.

Yeah. No one's gonna have to comb the ocean for his body and then find it all...whatever. Destroyed or something. His family can give him a proper funeral if they so choose.

This is a Chit Chat board, so stop acting like you own the place because you don't. If people are happy with the Peterson verdict, they have every right to express their opinion without your snide remarks. Twelve jurors found him guilty and he was sentenced.

You were a relentless pain about my husband the other day. You stepped way out of bounds. Knock it off. I'm speaking as a moderator now. Lighten up and stop being such an uptight instigator about every little thing. You're working my last nerve.

I'm proud of my state. We are second only to Texas in execution rate. And here, it doesn't take 30 years to carry out sentence. 5-10 max (still too much, IMO)

Peterson got his just reward, and prison isn't going to be fun for him either- a child murderer...even convicts have standards.

A little off topic, but if Michael Jackson is sent to prison, he may just end up getting killed.

Of course it's happened.
They can secure prisoners, but the ones not on death row are allowed out of their cells for recreation time or prison work. So, if an inmate somehow has a knife (by making it in a shop or something or someone giving it to him) he can stab a guard or another prisoner while being escorted to or from his cell.
It's happened before.

Going by the law, it's up to the jury and judge to decide the guilty person's fate. You may think that solitary confinement is better; many disagree with that.

No, it's true. I heard some legal analysts talking about it on cable TV. And they said no one who was innocent has been executed since the death penalty was reinstated. They didn't say before it was reinstated; only after. No lying here.

I think all states should have the same law (death penalty). And, as you said, it should not take 15 or 20 years. And, it should be for all murderes who receive that sentence. A state that only executes 2 or 3 murderers a year is not really a state that has the "death penalty." Considering how many people are convicted of murder, it should be much more than that.

It brings a certain measure of closure. For example, if they were random killings, and the murderer was never being caught and brought to justice...it would be doubly excruciating for Laci's family.

It allows the Petersons to close this chapter of the tragedy. They have closure on the legal aspect, but their grieving will never end.

Court cases are broadcasted on tv in California so that's why they become such big things. The same type of case wouldn't have anywhere near the same effect if it took place in Indiana or any other state without televised court hearings.

I totally agree. Husbands and boyfriends do kill their pregnant wives or girlfriends everyday and those stories don't get publicized that much. I think the reason why the Peterson case received so much publicity was because of how everything unfolded in the past two plus years. When Laci first disappeared, Scott was actually not considered a suspect but when Amber Frey came forward with their affair, everything went downhill from there. It was like a soap opera in my opinion.
