He had to be a fan of those shows. He forever gave reference to Good Times. That must have been his favorite. I remember he told Gina that Florida Evans and Weezy Jefferson never worked. He called Tommy "Head" Sanford. In that episode where the spanish dude was about to be deported out of the country, he said, "Chico and the Man." I can't remember what he said about Christie love and Donny and Marie. Fred Berry appeared on there as himself, and Martin hummed the tune to What's happening! So yeah, Martin was a fan of these shows. He was born in 65, so he grew up with these shows.

He made a reference to Christi Love in the episode when he went shoe shopping with Gina and asked some woman-"are you going for that Christi Love look?
James"Thunder"Early 03-11-2005, 09:46 PM LaWanda Page was a guest a few times and Ja'net DuBois, Shirley Hemphill, Sherman Hemsley and John Amos all made guest spots. most black comedians do like Good Times, Sanford and Son, What's Happening and the Jeffersons.

He probably would have Redd Foxx on there as a guest if he was alive when Martin was on the air. But there is one Black Comedian who is not a fan of Good Times, Jeffersons, and Sanford and Son. That comedian would be BILL COSBY!!! who also didn't like Martin.
James"Thunder"Early 03-11-2005, 09:59 PM Bill Cosby doesn't know what he's talking about. Every black show can't be like the Cosby Show.

These were the first black situation comedies. So most black comedians pay their respect to these shows.

I would have loved to see Redd Foxx and Martin Lawrence together. Do you think Martin idolized Redd?

You can say that again.

I know. Notice how no episode of the cosby show never made reference to any of those shows. But Martin made referenceto them all the time. I think someone said he didn;t like the Jeffersons because of George Jefferson and didn't like Good Times and Sanford and Son because it was about POOR blacks
MikeLutton 03-20-2005, 05:29 AM Also seem to have forgotten Martin Lawrence was on Whats happening for a year or 2 and was cool for him mention that show he was on.
signed Mike
Good Times got the most mentions. Even Martin as his mother used Florida's famous line "Damn Damn Damn" numerous times. They even had a tribute to The Love Boat on that twopart episode with them on the cruise ship. Even Pam and Martin eferenced the Damn Damn Damn episode.

I love Bill Cosby, but to his opinion regarding the black sitcoms, I say "What Ever". I could say negative things about Uptown Saturday Night and Let's Do It Again but I don't.

You are right about that, I remember Martin saying that when Tommy and Cole was sleeping, they looked like-"a Fake a$$ J.J and Michael"-LOL
GreenRanger01 06-02-2006, 05:27 PM can't forget the plot line where at the wedding, Pam signed where the bride was supposed to sign, and gina signed where the witness was supposed to sign. the exact same thing happened in sanford and son with fred/elizabeth/ester. ester signed on brides line and elizabeth signed where the witness signed and it turns out fred was married to ester and martin to pam.

That didn't happen on Sanford and Son, it happened on Sanford, the short-lived show from 1980

Marla Gibbs had a guest spot on Martin too.

I remember her as Ms. Minnie. She was sweet one moment and then a tyrant the next. You did not want to cross her.
I think that it is safe to say that Martin kinda recreated the 70's through his show. Even through the first season theme which had a funk sound to it.

Bill Cosby didn't like Good Times Solomon?
TVFactFan 05-06-2008, 08:21 PM Bill Cosby didn't like Good Times Solomon?
Yeah he felt those shows were presenting blacks in a negative way, Good Times, Jeffersons, and Sanford and Son. And didn't want his kids watching those shows
Ireneparalegal 05-06-2008, 08:24 PM But you said here that you didn't have a source or link to prove that rumor:

I don't that's why I don't post unless I'm asked. My Aunt has the information who was the one who brought this to me and my mom's attention

Huh? So, are you saying it is true or you just assume and you still have no link or proof, like you said in that other thread?
Brieannas21 05-06-2008, 08:31 PM Yeah he felt those shows were presenting blacks in a negative way, Good Times, Jeffersons, and Sanford and Son. And didn't want his kids watching those shows
That's very hard to believe since 3 of the actors from GT have been in some of Cosby movies.

I don't know if it's true, my Aunt would have to give me the information, some magazine she has. So it's just a "I HEARD THING" for now

Well, according to what you said on that other thread that I bumped up by responding to Brieannas, you want A SOURCE. ;) And a source would be nice to read.

I didn't say he didn't like the actors, I said he wasn't crazy about the show. Just likeI'm not crazy about going to the NUDIE BAR with my friends but they are still my friends

We still need a source. ;) If you mention in passing that Bill Cosby did not like Good Times, you are stating you agree with that comment, WITHOUT A SOURCE.

He should have looked at his character in "Uptown Saturday Night." But I will say, Bill got dirty and street without even cursing once in the movie. Something today's actors and comedians can't do or won't even try.

Well Solomon, Ever since I have been here, I have noticed there is still a lot of things you don't know. And the sources you state anyone can pull from. I am not saying you're not credible, you are good at what you do, but you're ok. You can have that title.
Ireneparalegal 05-06-2008, 09:25 PM After all these years I gained no RESEARCH CREDIBILITY????????????????????
So what are you saying?
Because you provided some info in the past, we should take your word abt Bill Cosby hating Good Times? Even though I researched and showed you your words where you said, I NEED A SOURCE?

I'm just curious though, why do you think it's false that Bill felt that way
Ireneparalegal 05-06-2008, 09:36 PM I'm just curious though, why do you think it's false that Bill felt that way
I don't know if it is false. But you made a thread stating that it is a rumor and unless someone provided facts, it is still a rumor. I agree with that.
It is easy to say Bill Cosby would hate GT because of some of the things that were said and shown on there. We know Bill is not a lover of ghetto-ish things, he frowns upon ghetto talk, ghetto life, etc. I understand why he feels the way he does. I don't always agree with everything he says or does (like cheating on his wife) but I like the fact the man wants people to get educated. We are blessed to have access to an education and people spit on that.
ok, off track I know. I guess because the rumor has been stated several times and I would like to put it to rest as to whether he said anything negatively abt the show. It is obvious from what Brie stated that he had nothing against the actors.
Brieannas21 05-06-2008, 09:41 PM I know I wasn't asked  But I find it hard to believe because in just about all of the movies that Cosby did in the 70's had something to do with thievery and gambling. Now I highly doubt that Bill would be so disgusted over GT with all of the movies that he has made. I'm a 70's movie freak and I've seen Cosby movies, he wasn't a saint in them at all.

And he is not a saint in real life. It is such a difference to see how Bill was in his early career prior to becoming the father of the year.

Well when he had his affair it was back in the 70's so I think that goes with my above statement. He did some things in the 70's so that whole GT comment doesn't hold any truth for me.
Ireneparalegal 05-06-2008, 09:49 PM Well when he had his affair it was back in the 70's so I think that goes with my above statement. He did some things in the 70's so that whole GT comment doesn't hold any truth for me.
I don't think it is true either. I tried in vain when Solomon made that original thread, to find some source where Bill actually stated he hated GT and I never found one. Albeit, the internet does not have everything ever printed, but I think something would have definitely popped up. I think it is one of those rumors that someone started simply because GT dealt with ghetto life.
