View Full Version : White People Buy Rap Music More Than Blacks
isiahthomas 03-10-2005, 05:43 PM I know this news shock you white people on here cause a lot of ya'll bash rap music saying it sucks when you know nothin about it cause ya'll don't even listen to it. Statistics show that white people buy rap albums more than blacks which shocks me. White people also go to rap concerts more than blacks. Blacks buy bootleg rap music cause most blacks can't afford to buy it. Back in the day, blacks used to buy it when rap first came on the scene. Now that rap sucks so bad, i guess that's why a lot of blacks don't buy it. I don't buy rap cd's anymore myself but i used to. Rap cd's i get now are bootlegged cause i'm tired of the wack rappers that are coming out now.
MissZero 03-10-2005, 07:09 PM lol....i buy rap cds so i guess that proves your point

Heck, I already knew that! They're only doing it to get back at their Baby Boomer rock-and-roll-lovin' parents! Other white kids are getting into big band music of their grandparents' day. Now there's a really good way to get back at big-band-hatin' Boomers!
AllIWantIsYourClutch 03-10-2005, 09:39 PM Well that was one of the most stereotypical things I've ever seen.
MaydayMalonesGirl 03-10-2005, 09:43 PM Now that rap sucks so bad, i guess that's why a lot of blacks don't buy it.
Meaning that white people are stupid hense them buying rap albums? I don't think it's fair to confine that stupidity just to white people.
Rap is dominate in the mainstream music scene. That's why a lot of people of every race, including white people and black people, buy rap albums.

I think that news should be shocking you worse than it shocks us, because you're the one in the Ice Cube thread who said that all white people do is hate blacks.
Why even bitch about how "biased" people who dislike rap are, how many times have you bashed "white" genres of music? How many times have you lumped everything pop and rock as "wack"?
Do you want racism to end? start with yourself, the way you react only makes things worse, not better. You come across as a bitter and uneducated person, Jrnygirl and Vashti are African-American too, but unlike you, they don't live in this box where everything is either "evil white" or "good black", and they are both well-liked on this forum because they are themselves instead of being all bitter the way you want them to be.
Steve M. 03-10-2005, 09:48 PM At the time Ice Cube released Death Certificate, he said he was glad white kids were buying rap albums because maybe they'd grow up and change socioeconomic conditions in urban America - even as he was rapping about wanting to violently emasculate white men who dated black women in "Little Horny Devil."
Quite a internal contradiction there! If you date my sister, I'll change you from a rooster to a hen with one shot! Now will you please buy my record?

Oh haven't you heard? It's okay for black people to hate anything white. But if white people say anything about another race, they get attacked.
ABlairican Pie 03-10-2005, 10:04 PM People (allegedly) buy more rap than rock, but only because it's trendy and makes them "widdit."
I guess I'll stick with REAL music like metal and the blues and be "widdoudit."

alright all this **** needs to stop now everyone...isiahthomas needs to stop generalizing white people. eveyone has different tastes in music and not everyones gonna like your harcore ****; maybe we all think your **** is "wack". So don't be tellin me that I buy rap albms cause I'm white and naive I buy them cause thats what I like...feel me?
AllIWantIsYourClutch, you need to stop generalizing black people. You posted that as though all blacks act like that when in fact few are. If racism is going to stop then simple little posts like yours need to stop. don't judge an entire race of people by the actions of one
Captain ABlairica, yeah rap is music as well as rock. I have the utmost respect for ALL kinds of music whether you choose to like it or not

What she said is 100% true, though. African Americans can make fun of white people all they want and it can mean nothing, but if a white person were to make fun of black people, they would be labeled as a racist. It's a huge double-standard.

yea, I did read on another area on here awhile back, him and another poster were talking about how "wack" all the white people on here are because of that "wack white pop and rock music" (which I honestly would take over 90% of the hip hop out there any time of day), I don't know any white people here who are dumb enough to say the same thing in reverse.

Captain ABlairica, yeah rap is music as well as rock. I have the utmost respect for ALL kinds of music whether you choose to like it or notYeah, okay, rap is music as well as rock. But can rap be TRANSCRIBED in sheet music form like rock and blues?
Steve M. 03-10-2005, 11:17 PM What she said is 100% true, though. African Americans can make fun of white people all they want and it can mean nothing, but if a white person were to make fun of black people, they would be labeled as a racist. It's a huge double-standard.
Your point is well taken but after all of the dubious contributions we white folks have made to popular music - Lawrence Welk, Guy Lombardo, Pat Boone, the Partridge Family, the Osmonds, Phil Collins, Michael Bolton - we sort of deserve to be ridiculed.
Steve M. 03-10-2005, 11:18 PM Yeah, okay, rap is music as well as rock. But can rap be TRANSCRIBED in sheet music form like rock and blues?
I thought I saw a rap transcription once - it turned out to be a Jackson Pollack painting!

okay yeah i see your point but this is a problem that needs to be fixed. My sister goes to Penn State and someone (who was white) made a racial slur out a window and suddenly all of the black people were rioting and demanding that a statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. be placed in front of this one building, that they get free scholarships, etc. etc. I thought that those demands were ridiculous. I get called so many things like Pollack, Cracker, etc. etc. and I ain't even gonna front it pisses me off but if anything I'm gonna work harder to prove myself as a person and to show that i can get where you are by hard work (and that it has nothing to do w/ race, ethnicity)...and more more and more young blacks seem to make these ridiculous demands and that seems like they want a free ride
But getting back on track it IS a major double standard....I look at Tupac's lyrics and he would do a song like Changes and then go hatin on white people...I can't lie the man had some awesome lyrics but damn....okay dunno if that made any sense and once again I'm not makin any generalizations
MissZero 03-10-2005, 11:40 PM Yeah, okay, rap is music as well as rock. But can rap be TRANSCRIBED in sheet music form like rock and blues?
yes, believe it or not there are rap songs that use actual instruments...well more like hip-hop

MissZero 03-11-2005, 12:08 AM Btw, you DO know who Jackson Pollock was?
not a clue.....fill me in please
ABlairican Pie 03-11-2005, 12:18 AM Jackson was one of the more popular Abstract Expressionist artists in the 1940's/50's whose trademark was to hang paint cans over his canvasses and have them drip on them while the swung about in eccentric circles (Hence his nickname "Jack the Dripper"). He died in a car crash in 1958.
Jackson Pollock and his painting "Number 1 1950 (Lavender Mist)":

GARFIELDKOOL 03-12-2005, 04:44 PM yea, I did read on another area on here awhile back, him and another poster were talking about how "wack" all the white people on here are because of that "wack white pop and rock music" (which I honestly would take over 90% of the hip hop out there any time of day), I don't know any white people here who are dumb enough to say the same thing in reverse.
You are referring to me Buffy. I didn't say that white people's taste were wack. You can like what ever you want to. I don't give a diddly doo squat if you hate smooth RnB and Funk. I can't live your life for you. Somebody posted on the random board that they hate rap videos. That's cool, but everyone who responded, started bashing the music itself. If me and Isiah posted a topic and said we hate rock music and metal, everyone on this board would debate and we would get the thread deleted. Now tell me if I'm right or wrong.
GARFIELDKOOL 03-12-2005, 05:01 PM Anyway, what Isiah is talking about is that 80% of rap consumers ARE white. I saw a biography on it myself. But those consumers buy commercial rap. A lot of those consumers buy someone who they can easily identify with like Eminem (who is nothing but a racist himself) Vanilla Ice, Third Bass, The Beastie Boys. It's ironic that all these artists went platinum. A white fan is most likely to buy all those groups I just listed over Eric B. and Rakim, D-Nice, Nice and Smooth, Big Daddy Kane, Geto Boys, Kwame, Professor Griff and KRS-1. So don't gang up on Isiah, he is just stating a proven statistic.

Buffy's not referring to you, he's mainly referring to the person who started this thread. From the Black Cinema board: "You forgot to mention the music board. All these lames on here do is post about wack pop artists & rock & roll singers." There was also another post that had to do with me specifically posting topics on so-called "wack" artists. The thread where it was mentioned has been deleted unfortunately, but just so you know, it wasn't you that BuffySlayer79 was talking about.

Buffy said Him(Isaih) and another thread (Me) I started that thread.
Ewan's My Man 03-12-2005, 06:01 PM I hate studies like this. Should it matter? As long as the rap world is successful does it really matter what race listens to it? I think studies like this just add to racism. They try to show a difference between black people and white people and a lot is made by generalizations. Both races are people. Last I heard there's no part of the brain that makes black people like or dislike rap, same for white people so there's no reason to do studies like this other than the fact that it gets a statistic. But what does that prove?
I really have no patience for racism. I think intolerance is a really nasty thing. There are problems with every race, not just the races that aren't yours.
Dean Winchester 03-12-2005, 09:38 PM You are referring to me Buffy. I didn't say that white people's taste were wack. You can like what ever you want to. well, maybe you didn't make the comments about white people having "wack tastes", but he did. All he does is talk about how stupid white people are, on a message board that attracts a predominantly white population. No white person would go to a largely African-American forum and talk about how stupid they think blacks are and how "wack" their tastes are and expect to actually not get banned. I don't think Isiah's "white people suck" attitude should be any more tolerated than if a white person said the same in reverse.
I agree everyone should listen to precisely what they want to listen to, but when "everyone who likes ____ is wack" is said, all bets are off. Especially when he doesn't realize there's a lot of people here who think hip hop is as wack as he thinks pop and rock music are.

why is Eminem a racist? is it because his ex-wife is white (even though you crucify it when blacks date outside of their race)? Is it because when he was 18 he did a song about black women (and before you try to go there, I've seen a lot of African-American men make fun of white women, I've seen people say that Nicole Brown Simpson deserved her death for being white, and that Jessica Simpson is proof that "all white women are dumb"). If Eminem was indeed a racist, he would've had the balls to say the N word when he was insulting every other type, but he refused to do it.
white people like Vanilla Ice? surely you jest. You think more white teens would buy a new Vanilla Ice album over a new album by 50 Cent or Jay-Z or Ludacris? And have 3rd Bass even done an album in the last 10 years? today's predominantly white teenage hip hop audience were about 3 years old when they were popular, they probably don't remember them.
Beastie Boys really aren't that popular with rap fans, their market since the early 90's has been more or less the alternative rock market, not rap.

You and Isiah needs to work that out. I respect all kinds of music. My thing is that white consumers are buying the music because they see a white face they can identify with in a black dominated world. Where were these consumers in 1979 when the Sugar Hill Gang took off and made the first rap single sampled from Chic's "Good Times?" Where were they in 1985 when Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew came out with, "The Show?" My point is and I'm not being racist or militant, but whites would not buy these albums if there is not a white face or something that doesn't bash them in this game. The thing that pisses me off is when "conservative" people go out and bash rap saying it is negative and everything they will be quick to support Eminem! Hip-Hop is poetry and uplifting. I will admit, some of that gangsta rap is too vulgar I don't even consider that as music.
GARFIELDKOOL 03-12-2005, 10:31 PM why is Eminem a racist? is it because his ex-wife is white (even though you crucify it when blacks date outside of their race)? Let me just say Eminem is a racist because he called a black woman he used to date a ni-gger. You didn't hear about it? Whether he meant it or not, his true feelings came out. Eminem may be your boy and everything but I'm stating the fact. He is coatailing right now. He produced a few hot beats for 50 Cent and that is probably one of the reasons why he is still going right now. Dr. Dre is kissing his ass right now and it is only a matter of time before he realizesthat Eminem is wack and pull the plug on him.
Dean Winchester 03-12-2005, 10:48 PM You and Isiah needs to work that out. I respect all kinds of music. My thing is that white consumers are buying the music because they see a white face they can identify with in a black dominated world.
50 Cent is white? Jay-Z is white? Kanye West is white? Ludacris is white? All of those are currently hotter than Eminem is and their singles have scored better than Eminem's last few songs have.
Where were these consumers in 1979 when the Sugar Hill Gang took off and made the first rap single sampled from Chic's "Good Times?"
"Rappers Delight" was a top 40 pop single, a lot of white people liked the song. Did you not see "I Love 1980" on VH1 where a lot of celebrities who have no ties to the hip hop world talked about the first time they heard that song? Granted, rap music was largely treated as a novelty back then, but the song was definately a success and a lot of white people of age remember that song. Today's hip hop consumers were not born when Rappers Delight came out, they probably are too young to remember Run-DMC even.
My point is and I'm not being racist or militant, but whites would not buy these albums if there is not a white face or something that doesn't bash them in this game. have you looked at the albums and singles chart lately? The biggest albums of 2003 (50 Cent) and 2004 (Usher) were both by black artists, not white. Eminem is definately big, but you make it out like he's this mammoth superstar of the genre and everyone else should be lucky if their album goes gold, but there are a lot of black rappers who I'd say currently are hotter than Eminem is.

see, there you go making assumptions about white people (and as a FYI, I like funk music). Eminem is "my boy"? I hated Eminem back in 2000 when he had all the anti-gay songs and I still won't support him because I don't like his brand of music. Have I ever said I liked Eminem once?

Chill man, I'm not trying to touch your nerve. I am not making assumptions about white people. Personally, I don't like 50 Cent or Ludacrist. I'm just stating the fact. I ain't got no problem with whites listening to rap, I'm just quoting what the stats have proven and what I see. Whites buy whites and white influenced songs. As well as blacks in reversed. Let's not get controversial here, I don't want this thread to close, I just assumed Eminem was your boy because you seemed to have gotten offended by my comments of him.
MissZero 03-12-2005, 11:45 PM I'm gonna have to agree with GARFIELDCOOL on the Eminem thing. White kids see Eminem and it gives them a sense of belonging in a black dominated genre....so yeah i agree with that. But believe me when I say white kids aren't buying Vanilla Ice LMAO more like 50 Cent, Ludacris, Nelly, etc.

Dean Winchester 03-13-2005, 01:56 PM Chill man, I'm not trying to touch your nerve. Let's not get controversial here, I don't want this thread to close, I just assumed Eminem was your boy because you seemed to have gotten offended by my comments of him.
well, I didn't know where you got the "Eminem is a racist" comments from, I figured you were just coming up with something to try and damn him, much like people have been trying to destroy Elvis' integrity for decades by calling him a racist, when the truth is that him and James Brown were close friends up until his death. I figured it was just some rumor made up trying to hurt his image because he was "too big" that he should be shot down.
Personally, I think Eminem is the most overrated artist bar none of the past 10 years, he is basically a glorified novelty recording artist, except Weird Al doesn't resort to knocking people to be funny like Eminem does. Critics have been all up Eminem's butt since his first record and I never understood what was so special about him. He's gotten where he is by trashing other artists. I think it's a pretty safe assumption to say that Moby's last cd flopped so badly because of Eminem's "Without Me" song and video that came out around the same time. I thought it was hilarious when Dr. Dre said "we were robbed" when Steely Dan (a band who has actual talent) won the Grammy over Em a few years ago, if Eminem had won a Grammy, it'd have been the biggest joke since Jethro Tull winning for heavy metal.
But when you say that white people listen to Eminem because him being white gives them a sense of "belonging" in the hip hop world, you must remember there are a lot of African-Americans who will listen to Lenny Kravitz, yet won't touch any other rock artist. So it's really not that different.
isiahthomas 03-14-2005, 12:17 PM Eminem isn't anything special to me either. I don't know why people made such a big deal about him when he first came on the scene. I like his 8 Mile movie a lot but that's it. GarfieldKool you spelled Ludacris wrong. It's Ludacris, not Ludacrist LOL. I didn't know Elvis & James Brown were friends.

I guess I got that TVShowAnalyzer disease where I type too fast. Sorry. JB and Elvis were friends.

By the way 8-Mile sucked big time! I don't know what the hype was on that crap! That was a low-budget movie that should have failed.
isiahthomas 03-14-2005, 05:56 PM 8 Mile didn't suck. It was funny seeing Mekhi Phifer with dreads.
isiahthomas 03-14-2005, 05:59 PM One thing that baffles me about rappers is why would they wanna make their music appeal to white people. Rap music is for the streets. It's not for suburban white people. I know ya'll white people on here are gonna be mad at me for making that comment but i'm sorry cause that's the way i feel. Rappers are so damn concerned about their songs gettin played on the radio & album sales. Ain't nothin wrong with wanting to see your album sell but do you gotta make pop songs to have your album sell?

Rap music is for anyone that enjoys it, white or black

please, you're sending mixed signals.
In your opinion, white people who listen to "white" music are "lames" and "wack", but then at the same time, white people shouldn't listen to rap music? One of the reason the legends of black music are what they are, be it legends of Motown, Prince, Stevie, Aretha, Marvin, etc... is because, unlike you and many of the other younger people out there, they didn't see music as a "white thing" or a "black thing", they made music that everyone could enjoy. That is why I like the black music of the 60's, 70's and 80's but most of the crap from the past 15 years I can't stand. It's all about either black or white, as opposed to the past when blacks and whites could both listen to the latest Kool And The Gang record together.
I am willing to bet if a white person here said "any black person who listens to rock is wack, rock is our music, not yours", they'd be banned. What you said is the exact same thing in reverse, neither better nor worse.
Maybe if you stopped being so hostile towards white people, you'd be less bitter, because you seem to have this "white man is the devil" attitude, and we're not gonna tolerate it here since you're offending the majority of us, not a small segment

Buffy, I know you and me had some disagreements a few days ago, but all I can say is that I agree with you.

thank you.
IMO, good music is good music is good music, regardless if the artist performing the song is white, black, Hispanic, Asian or a mixture of all the former. There are a number of recent r&b/hip hop acts I actually do like, and also Latin artists I like, etc... music should be about the quality instead of the race of the performer, every genre of music has it's John Lennon as well as it's Vanilla Ice, no exceptions.
GARFIELDKOOL 03-14-2005, 08:23 PM thank you.

You made a good point, especially about the Motown thing. I respect all kinds of music, if it is meant to be heard, then it gets my respect. I might not go out and buy a country cd, but it has a large fan base. I respect heavy metal as well, because those guys are real musicians. Black Sabbath is tight, I use to like "Iron Man." Eddie Van Halen was the man too, I wonder if people knew he played guitar on "Beat It" by Michael Jackson.
MissZero 03-14-2005, 11:14 PM isiahthomas, i have to say that had to be the most ridiculous post. What happens to suburban blacks who listen to rap music? Rap was made for the "streets" so I guess it's not alright for them to listen to it either?

I see where the problem with rap really lies....
