View Full Version : What is a coolacoo?
blah_ 03-02-2005, 11:28 PM In the episode where Doug calls Arthur a "demented circus monkey" they end up taking the old guy to a mets game, trying to make him feel better. Carrie goes off to the concessions to get her dad a "coolacoo" (sp?), only to get in the beer only line by mistake where they won't sell her one.
Maybe I'm just Canadian, but what the heck is a coolacoo and why is it bugging me so much?
Storywriter 03-03-2005, 01:24 AM Hey I'm American and live in New York and have no idea what coolacoo is.So I'm going to guess what it is.My guess is it's a nickname she has for coke a coola but I could be wrong.Mel
Eddie Haskell 03-03-2005, 09:50 AM That was episode #31 or the 6th episode in the second season; it was called Doug Out. I didn't know what the hell she was saying and I'll have to put that disc on closed caption and see if it was a mistake.
the truth 03-03-2005, 05:33 PM Don't know exactly, but it's some kind of ice cream treat. For some reason, I seem to imagine it being like one of those choco-tacos or something.
Anyone?
That ep was on last night (here). I was wondering the same thing??
I was also thinking ice cream.
I'll be at a Mets game mon. (spring training). I'll see if they have them!! :happyface

Be sure to update us on what you find out about them! ;)
the truth 03-03-2005, 05:55 PM After an exhaustive internet search for the word "coolacoo" or even "coolakoo" or "cool a coo"....you get the picture, I've concluded there is no such thing at all...at least not any more as nothing turned up anywhere on any search engine. I then tried some ice cream sites and again, nothing. So either we need to find the correct spelling, or we're out of luck. On a list of NY Mets concession items, I did come up with this menu and price list of what they actually sell...

Cotton Candy--$3.50
Pretzel--$3.75
Nachos--Grande-$5, Supreme-$6

4 Chicken Tenders & Fries--$8.50
Pizza, slice--$6.25

Lemonade--16oz-$3.75

Beer, draft--24oz-$6.25

Hm...maybe it's just one of those things they made up for the show.
queenschick 03-03-2005, 09:05 PM Yeah I was gonna say a little earlier that [though I'm a die hard Yankee fan] I've been to Shea on more than one occassion [hey, free tickets. who wouldn't say yes? ] and they never had cool a coos and it probably was made up for the show. I'm guessin' it's somethin' on a stick 'cause she was tellin the concession stand guy something like "I've got an old man out there whose got his heart set on a friggin cool a coo. If i don't see a cool a coo in my hand, I'm gonna put YOU on a stick."
glenny 03-03-2005, 09:38 PM $6.25 for a slice of pizza!!! Geez!!!

Thanks for clearing this up for us!
I was at the game. I asked one of the mets dudes. He said he never heard of it.
By the way!!!
On the official cbs site. They say that Gary Valentine plays the brother.
I thought he was the cousin???

Well there's a big "oops" from CBS. This just illustrates how involved CBS is with this show. Wake up guys, this show could be #1 if you cared AT ALL!

The site is really bland. You are right it could be #1. Its a great show. It should be on Mondays if you ask me. Instead of some of those dumb shows currently on. I wonder if it will take ELR's spot next year?

Apparently, Two and a Half Men is taking ELR's spot next fall. I also wish CBS would move it back to Monday.

Cool-A-Coos were awesome! Sorry for bumping such an old thread that I ran into accidentally. I just found out Cool-A-Coo went out of business and I'm crushed. I used to get several packages of them (3 per package) at USC basketball games when I was a student in the '80s. They were better known at Dodger Stadium. Also at grocery stores in the Los Angeles area and convenience stores like Arco gas stations. Whenever I saw one I had to grab it, in fact several.
They were basically two big oatmeal cookies with plenty of vanilla ice cream in between and coated with chocolate. The closest surviving parallel is called It's It, which is also a Western treat. I can get them here in Las Vegas at Albertson's for $2.89 for a 3-pack. They are similar to Cool-A-Coo but not as big or as pristine or as tasty.
I have no idea how Cool-A-Coo got into an episode about a Mets game, unless they were playing at Dodger Stadium. If it was a home Mets game that's absurd. Must have been a goofball who knew of Cool-A-Coos at Dodger games and didn't realize they were purely regional.
BTW, the inventor of the Cool-A-Coo was Leo Politis. I think the company went out of business and filed for bankruptcy a few years ago. Big loss.

Thanks for the info!!
I'm sure that was supposed to be a Mets home game, so it was a definite goof.

It sure was. I hope the episode was at least fairly early in the show's run. If it was 2003 or later they really botched it, since Cool-A-Coos were already extinct.
This is a blurb from the San Gabriel Valley Tribune on May 19, 2003:
"Cool-A-COO ice-cream bars used to be a staple at Dodgers games, approaching Dodger Dogs in popularity. But the company that made them is now out of business, and the man who invented them, Leo Politis, is broke. The current owners of the brand have had their business license revoked by the state, so you'll probably never see another Cool-A-COO bar again."
Here is a better link that shows the building where they were made, and the logo, with a little bit more info. Scroll close to the bottom:

A Cool-A-Coo was an ice cream sandwich that consisted of two oatmeal cookies with vanilla ice cream in between, coated in chocolate. Here's some lady's article about it: http://articles.latimes.com/1999/aug/15/magazine/tm-239

The episode aired October 25, 1999!
aramlq 07-01-2010, 01:42 AM I think it is an ice cream sandwich.
supermac8 06-22-2012, 02:42 AM Well you all can stop wishing. It looks like the Cool-a-Coo never died. As Awsi Dooger mentioned, the original proprietor, Leo Politis is still alive and kicking at 86. In fact he still makes the original ice cream sandwiches at a location in El Monte, CA now called a Mr. Cool. If you're ever in the LA area the place is called the El Monte Dairy and is located at 2440 Strozier Ave. South El Monte.

Cousin, Gary Valentine is Kevin James' real brother; he has appeared in the Kevin James comedy movie Mall Cop.
Mark Mallard 12-09-2016, 07:22 PM I watched this episode the other night! I'm glad you asked this question because I didn't know they were probably made for the show. Evidently I took it as truth, haha!

Chocolate Moose 07-02-2020, 09:57 AM To me, that sounds like a Chipwich, which we ate in DC in the 80's.
