James' hair was intentionally unkept. Did they ever show Willona's real hair? You know it wasn't until well into adulthood that it dawned on me that she wore wigs in the episodes. At least in one episode (I think it's the one with the dog food/meatloaf) they have an in-joke about it when someone pulls her into a chair and she has to keep her wig from falling off.

Wigs were quite common for African American actresses prior to the 80s when gheri curls, braids, and weaves came in. Esther Rolle wasn't one to wear them though and I always thought she looked very regal with her Afro.

I never noticed all the wig wearing in the 70's shows either till I got a little older...even though Willona having hair down to her back one episode and then having a a short doowop the next should have been a sign.

In the episode where James gets hired for a job in Alaska, I believe that is her real hair she's wearing. She looked good with her short hair, I don't think she needed a wig!
