Come this Tuesday, ABC will lose its only scripted series to have aired an episode in the 20th century. The second oldest show is My Wife and Kids which debuted in March 2001. After that is Alias from September of the same year.

Does anyone else find this strikingly odd??

That sort of tells you how bad its been at ABC the last few years.

Primetime, yes.

But people ALWAYS OVERLOOK daytime when it comes to "oldest this" or "longest-running that." General Hospital is the longest-running show on the network and is the oldest. One Life to Live and All My Children closely follow.

Sad... can anyone compare the other networks to that?

I'll try...

NBC:

I believe that Law and Order is their longest running show, debuting in the late 80's. Than ER follows, then Will and Grace.

CBS:

i think their longest running show currently is Judging Amy, followed by Raymond, than The King Of Queens...

WB:

Longest running is 7th Heaven, i believe that Charmed is next and then Gilmore Girls, Smallville and Reba.

UPN:

mmmm do they have anything older than 3 years on their network (i mean other than Smackdown)...

FOX:

hmmm this is tough, seeing as i hardly ever watch this network, but i think that their longest-running show is The Simpsons, followed by King of the hill and than Malcolm In The Middle..

CBS also has JAG which premiered on NBC in 1995 but moved to CBS the following season.

Actually, Raymond is 3 seasons older than Judging Amy. It's currently in it's ninth season, and Amy is only in her sixth. And That 70s Show is older than Malcolm in the Middle on Fox. It's in its 7th season, and I believe King of the Hill is too. And I don't know about UPN either. I know Enterprise is in it's fourth season, premiering in 2001, but I'm not sure if they have anything older. I dunno. NYPD Blue was really all ABC had after Drew Carey ended.Hard to believe it's ending. End of an era.

Girlfriends might be UPN's longest running show right now.

Four years? For ABC, that's impressive.

Am I blind or does this say what the show to air in the 20th century was?

I think it speaks more to the fact that you're obviously not in touch with anything the media promotes. this finale has been so hyped, beyond anything i've ever seen. but its ok because NYPD BLUE was past its prime, years and years ago. Once Smitts left it wasn't the same.

Well y ou certianly entitled to feel that way, but it just surprises me that someone could not know that Blue is going off the air, i mean its a pretty big, pretty important series.

I knew it was going off the air. I didn't think of it as ABCs oldest show though. Sorry.

No need to insult someone because they might not watch as much tv as someone else. I haven't seen any ads for NYPD Blue's finale, either. No radio ads, no tv ads, nothing on buses, etc.

I watch only a little(compared to some people here) of ABC weekly, and I've seen at least one ad per every 30 minutes for the finale(or a countdown to it before now), and I haven't watched the show and never will.

I'm not a fan of the series but I'm just wondering why you never will. Maybe you'll like it.

As for the UPN, they tend to cancel their scripted series at their 5th seasons because at that point they go past their cheap stage and the network is cheap.

The only shows to last past their fifth season on that network, I believe, were Voyager and Moesha. Then there was Buffy, but that was a different situation.

You guys forgot to include The Simpsons in your calculations for Fox.

"Girlfriends" is UPN's second-oldest scripted show.

What's their oldest scripted show? "WWE Smackdown."

Law & Order premiered in 1990...that seems to be dwindling down in the ratings so I think it only has a few more years left in it.

UPN kills their shows off once they reach episode 110...enough for syndication (the cheap bastards!)

FOX's oldest show is The Simpsons with King Of The Hill right behind it.

If you have no interest in NYPD Blue (which is obviously the case), then you COULDN'T care less.

Actually, it's 100 episodes for syndication, which is why there's only a slim chance than Girlfriends will be back next season.

The again, the UPN had only had three scripted series to reach that mark- Voyager, Moesha and The Parkers. I'm not sure if Enterprise will hit it this season or not, but I doubt it.

Well, no matter what, the longest run scripted show on network television is The Guiding Light, end of story. It premiered on radio on January 28, 1937, and premiered on television on June 30, 1952, and still ran on radio until 1956.

I'm gonna repeat, when it comes to longest-running scripted shows, soaps have got most of primetime beat. The only SCRIPTED show that I think comes close is Saturday Night Live, which premiered 12 years before The Bold and the Beautiful and 24 years before Passions.

you sing it girl! soaps have all other shows beat by decades. Guiding Light, than As The World Turns, followed by General Hospital (1963), Days Of Our Lives (1963), One Life To Life (1968), All My Children (1970), The Young and the restless (1973), the bold and the beautiful (1989) and passions (200?).

It's a matter of opinion, but I was just stating the FACTS. F A C T S. People can go on and on and on about Law and Order or NYPD Blue or ER, but they have NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING on daytime soaps.

Even amongst primetime, especially episode wise, night soaps have longer runs than regular, self-contained dramas. Dallas was on from 1978 to 1991 and made 357 episodes, not to mention a prequel movie in 1986 and two sequel movies, 1996 and 1998. Knots Landing, its spin-off, ran from 1979 to 1993 and had 344, and then in 1997, a four-hour miniseries reunion. Dynasty and Falcon Crest both ran for 9 seasons each (Spring 1981-1989, 1981-1990, respectively), and DYN made 219, FC had 227. Melrose Place made 227 episodes in seven seasons, but it took NYPD Blue over ten seasons to achieve that amount. Even the SHORTER running soaps made more episodes in relation to other dramas. Dynasty II: The Colbys, which only ran for two seasons, 1985-1987, made 49 episodes. Blue only made 44 episodes over two seasons.

Now I know I sound like an extremely broken record, repeating this type of info over and over again, but when people are saying that Blue is the longest-running scripted show on ABC, without even considering the OTHER scripted shows on the network, I have to stand up for mah shows...
