View Full Version : Parent show and spinoff question GARFIELDKOOL 02-02-2005, 01:51 PM Name some parent shows you liked better than the spinoff, and the spinoff you like better than the parent show. slackermonkey 02-02-2005, 04:24 PM I liked Cheers and Friends better than Frasier and Joey. Can't think of a spinoff I liked better than the parent show. vashti1999 02-02-2005, 04:35 PM After watching the Soap season 3 dvd last week, I was surprised to see that Benson lasted longer. Soap is my favorite between the two. I love Moesha, hate the Parkers. The only spinoff I can think of off the top of my head liking more than the parent show is A Different World over the Cosby Show. I like Diff'rent Strokes more than the Facts of Life, Mary Tyler Moore more than Rhoda/Phyllis, Three's Company of course more than the Ropers or Three's A Crowd, but I like all of those shows. Others, I like fairly equally: All In The Family/Jeffersons Happy Days/Laverne & Shirley spunkygirl 02-02-2005, 04:38 PM I like Cheers better than Frasier, Happy Days better than Laverne and Shirley, Friends better than Joey(although I love both shows), I like the Mary Tyler Moore Show better than Rhoda and Phyllis I like A Different World better than the Cosby Show, I like the Facts of Life better than Diff'rent Strokes GARFIELDKOOL 02-02-2005, 05:01 PM After watching the Soap season 3 dvd last week, I was surprised to see that Benson lasted longer. As well as Different Strokes better than facts of Life. slackermonkey 02-02-2005, 05:39 PM Ooh, I forgot about Soap and Benson. I liked Soap better too. barwars 02-02-2005, 08:50 PM I like Cheers more than Frasier (although Frasier is my second favorite show) I like Friends more than Joey However.... I like The Facts of Life more than Diff'rent Strokes. Laverne & Shirley AND Mork & Mindy more than Happy Days. And most definitely The Jeffersons more than AITF. (although I like AITF a lot too) As for Soap vs. Benson.... Benson is better IMO. dawsongirl 02-02-2005, 10:49 PM  I can't even think of any spinoffs. Kristen 02-02-2005, 11:08 PM Name some parent shows you liked better than the spinoff, and the spinoff you like better than the parent show. I like "Mary Tyler Moore" better than "Rhoda," but I like "Wings" better than "Cheers." (Sorry "Cheers" fans - I don't hate the show, it's just I got more into "Wings" for whatever reason!) slackermonkey 02-02-2005, 11:41 PM Huh? Wings wasn't a spinoff of Cheers. spunkygirl 02-03-2005, 12:25 AM  I can't even think of any spinoffs. The Jeffersons Frasier The Facts of Life Laverne and Shirley A Different World and many more ;) vashti1999 02-03-2005, 12:32 AM I'd also say Good Times, but that might start something... spunkygirl 02-03-2005, 12:50 AM I'd also say Good Times, but that might start something... Whatever do you mean? ;) Brian 02-03-2005, 01:30 AM I liked Maude better than All in the Family. mstewart 02-03-2005, 01:48 AM I'd also say Good Times, but that might start something... I'll start it. Good Times was a spinoff of a spinoff. Florida was on Maude as her maid. Then she went on to Good Times. I like Good Times much better than Maude. Good Times shot itself in the foot by putting too much focus on J.J. I thought James and Florida was great together and too bad there no stories more on their relationship. Killing the character of James Evans off killed the show as well. The first three seasons of Good Times was priceless. I liked Mary Tyler Moore much better than Rhoda/Phyllis. Those two spinoffs lacked direction. I liked Andy Griffith much better than Mayberry R.F.D. That was a boring show. The Cosby Show was better than A Different World. All In the Family was priceless compared to Maude. Maude was too one dimensional and it got tiring to watch. Applause to Bea Arthur to knowing when to call it quits. Alice was far better than Flo. Flo was a supporting player and putting her out there alone was not good. She was at its best around Mel and the gang. treky 02-03-2005, 02:15 AM I'll start it. Good Times was a spinoff of a spinoff. "The Fonzie show". That is, until "Laverne & Shirley" moved to California, and HALF THE FRIGGIN' TOWN went with them!!!! factsoflife 02-05-2005, 08:32 PM I like Facts Of Life, LEAP YEARS better than Different Strokes, Joey better than Friends, Melrose Place better than 90210 and Models Inc., better than Melrose Place. Kristen 02-05-2005, 09:35 PM Huh? Wings wasn't a spinoff of Cheers. Yes it was. Several "Cheers" characters (Norm, Cliff, Fraiser and Lilith) appeared on "Wings." Kristen factsoflife 02-05-2005, 10:13 PM Yes it was. Several "Cheers" characters (Norm, Cliff, Fraiser and Lilith) appeared on "Wings." Kristen actually it was not, they just happened to have a few guest appearances. I can GUARENTEE THAT IT WAS NOT a spin-off of "Cheers", the only "Cheers" spin-off ever has been "Fraser" and a short-lived series called "the tortellies". Cheers and Wing both aired on NBC and had some of the same producers behind them, but were not in any way a spin-off of each other, not at all. A spin-off is when a character from one-show leaves that show and becomes the center of a whole new show. For example Fraser on Cheers became the star of "Fraser". spunkygirl 02-05-2005, 10:33 PM Yes it was. Several "Cheers" characters (Norm, Cliff, Fraiser and Lilith) appeared on "Wings." Kristen Like factsoflife said it's not. That was just a one sided crossover. It wasn't a spin off, none of the Wings Characters appeared on Cheers, which for a spinoff, characters would have to crossover to both shows. It was just created by the same creators of Cheers and Frasier :) barwars 02-05-2005, 11:27 PM No show ever crossed over onto Cheers. But Cheers characters have crossed over onto many series. Wings and Cheers characters live in the same reality, but Wings is not a spinoff. Kristen 02-05-2005, 11:42 PM No show ever crossed over onto Cheers. But Cheers characters have crossed over onto many series. Wings and Cheers characters live in the same reality, but Wings is not a spinoff. OK, I stand corrected. It's not technically a spinoff, but they share the same reality. I was close, though. treky 02-06-2005, 12:19 AM No show ever crossed over onto Cheers. But Cheers characters have crossed over onto many series. Wings and Cheers characters live in the same reality, but Wings is not a spinoff. a show crossed over into "Cheers" once, sort of. Once, Woody got a small role on the show "Spencer: For Hire". No, wait, I stand corrected: there was the time Cliff appeared on "Jeprody" and the time Cliffs mother & Norm were on "The Tonight show starring Johnny Carson". barwars 02-06-2005, 09:54 AM a show crossed over into "Cheers" once, sort of. Once, Woody got a small role on the show "Spencer: For Hire". No, wait, I stand corrected: there was the time Cliff appeared on "Jeprody" and the time Cliffs mother & Norm were on "The Tonight show starring Johnny Carson". I wouldn't really call those crossovers.... those are more like crossovers with reality. I mean.... everyone at the bar knew Jeopardy and The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson were TV shows. On Wings.... they knew Frasier and Lilith as people, not someone from TV. Superstar 02-06-2005, 12:30 PM I like Friends alot more than Joey. But I prefer The Parkers to Moesha Joker85 02-06-2005, 12:43 PM I'm in the minority here, I liked Frasier better than Cheers. Friends I enjoyed waaay more than Joey. Laverne and Shirley over Happy Days Soap over Benson Alice over Flo The Cosby Show over a Different World. and the most important. I liked The Golden Girls WAAAAY better than the horrible Golden Palace. factsoflife 02-06-2005, 01:49 PM i like Moesha much better than The Parkers. and Party Of Five better than Time Of Your Life. lostsanfordson 02-17-2005, 09:05 PM I think Frasier was far better than cheers, Mork and Mindy better than Happy days, Good times better than Maude, and Family matters over perfect strangers, also benson far over soap. Heather987 02-18-2005, 02:51 AM Does this one count? Mama's Family over Carol Burnette Show Golden Girls over Golden Palace Cheers over Frasier Cosby over A Different World (until the last season of Cosby then I didnt like either) Dallas over Knots Landing (does this one count?) Alice over Flo Friends over Joey Mary Tyler Moore over Phyllis Jeffersons over All In The Family CSI New York over CSI Vegas Mr. Television 02-18-2005, 02:58 AM Cheers over Frasier CSI over anyone of their spinoffs Different Strokes over Facts Of Life All In The Family over Maude Growing Pains over Just The 10 Of Us Who's The Boss over Living Dolls Three's Company over Three's A Crowd Happy Days over Laverne and Shirley Dallas over Knots Landing andress_jade 04-13-2005, 05:07 AM Let's see...
