I have NEVER seen a shelf cloud before today. It looked like the sky was falling and was green. It looked exactly like the one I used to have as my profile pic. Awesome.

One inch hail just 3 miles to my west in Dearborn and it's been raining for well over an hour here with plenty more big storms behind it.

I've seen that happen about 3 times now in my life. The first and last were the coolest! The first one was in the 70's and I watched off our 7th floor balcony as it approached. Just like a wall coming your way. Then watching as it wet the pavement on one side of the road, but not the other. Yes - they pass really quickly.
The second one was actually like that, with what looked like 2 funnel clouds starting. I was driving home from work about 5 years ago and just freaking because it looked as though the funnel clouds were very close to my house. Luckily they did die out before hitting ground, but it was confirmed on the news that night that they did have the potential of becoming dangerous. I drove into the storm as it was headed towards me. That one had hail - everything!

We've just had a fairly warm, humid day but a cold drizzle coming down for most of it today.

Yeah, those are shelf clouds. It has to be a pretty strong storm to see one of those.

Basically, if it's strong enough to produce those, it's pretty dangerous. Supercells and Squall lines most commonly have them.

And you can FEEL the danger. I have to admit, I was bawling my eyes out on that trip home. Nobody was home and I was terrified for my pets! Plus, I could barely see to drive myself once I hit the storm. ONe of those situations where you really should pull over to the side of the road and wait it out, but I HAD to get home. By the time I got to the top of the escarpment (with live on the very end of it), the sun was shining and all was beautifully calm again. I love strange weather patterns (although I would have preferred to be home during that one). It was really humid afterwards on both occasions I remember.

I wasnt scared, just excited and wishing that I had a camera with me. I knew exactly what kind of dangers that those could pose, so I was prepared. One of the most damaging forms of shelf clouds are associated with BIGTIME squall lines, or a derecho, where winds of 75-125MPH can blow through just before those come overhead with the gust front. In some extreme cases they've lasted more than 2 minutes, to even 15 minutes.

I need to go down in Oklahoma or Kansas in the summer when one of those sets up.

Luckily for me (Or unluckily...However you want to look at it lol) there werent winds that strong, but it got really windy just before it passed over and you could see a wall of rain coming right at ya from the west. That was pretty cool.

I was only scared really with the last one - mainly because of my animals (they freak in thunderstorms - like last night's). I also didn't like being in a car, because yeah, the winds are something and I was driving a light car in a very narrow, raised country road. Plus, I was travelling uphill, so it seemed to take forever to get there.

If I was in a Hummer or something I might feel better, but still don't know if I'd want to be in Kansas during tornado season!! I was in the middle of a cylcone in northern Ontario once - with my mother driving the car (we had been at a cottage and had gone into town that day because it was lousy weather). We had no idea of how bad it was going to get. Our only path back to the cottage was blocked by two HUGE fallen oak trees and there was only four of us with no tools. I've never seen damage like it. Lakes were washing out lakeside highways - like the one we were driving on. You couldn't see a thing other than dark objects getting flung past the windows of the cars - and you could tell they were trees and everything else. My brother and boyfriend were also in the car and we adults and we ALL we screaming at one point. It was the most terrified I've been in my life. That was close enough thanks! ;) :D

It's 90 outside today. It was like this yesterday too. This morning around 9:30, I went outside to walk up the street to another office building & by the time I got back to my building, I was sweating like I had just cut 10 yards of grass  The good news is that it's supposed to storm this evening, which would be most welcoming lol
