View Full Version : Scenes that make you laugh out loud

One of the moments in TDVDS that always catches me off guard (no matter how often I've seen it) and makes me laugh out loud is the scene where Laura's toe is stuck in the faucet and Rob walks in laughing, "Honey, you look so funny!", then he comes out of the bathroom still chortling and holding the gun loosely and says to the two hotel guys, "You guys want to see something funny?" Then he abruptly comes to himself, realizes what he said and snaps the gun up with this look of "NO, I didn't mean that!"

While Rob is storming out of the hotel bar in Albany and the organist asked him what he wanted to hear, Rob disgustingly said "Who cares," and she starts singing "Who cares..."

OH YES!!!! That whole episode is a LOL!

Also, the one where's he's crying over the kitty stuck in the tree when he's been awake all those hours.

I'm laughing just thinking about those scenes, drunk Rob with a girl in his jacket and exhausted Rob crying over the kitty. LOL

And of course, the skiing episode: When Laura comes out of the bedroom in the flimsy negligee. "You look cold...I think you ought to put some clothes on and go to bed!"

"Don't toy with me, you saucy wench!" -- "Never Bathe On Saturday" (Anyone notice that Carl Reiner, in the DVD's special features when interviewed, refers to this ep. as "Never Bathe On SUNDAY"?) :)

MAID -- "Why can't your wife open the door from the other side?"
ROB -- "Because she's stuck in the tub."
MAID -- "And she calls ME stupid." :)

In The Cat Burglar when Rob searches the house. I start laughing when he's having trouble with Laura's jewelry box to when the mop falls down when he opens the closet in the kitchen to when he steps through the kitchen door. :D

It always cracks me up when during "Never talk to a Snail" when Douglas(Sally's Date) introduces himself to everyone and says" My uncle played spoons at Procters in Jersey". Buddys says Oh. Douglass says " Did you know him?" And Buddy says " No, but I know a couple of spoons"

Its so silly but gets me every time

One of my favorite moments has always been in "Where Did I Come From?" when Rob drops the phone down his pants (Or should I say Buddy's pants? hehe!). As soon as he realizes it's there, he goes, "Don't hang up!" That gets me every time!

How about in "Bumpkis" when Rob is trying to call the radio station, he picks up the phone, dials the number, and then realizes that he needs to look in the phone book for the number. He starts obviously laughing realizing what he's done!

Here are a couple of more that I remember:

In "The Sick Boy and the Sitter" Rob says "Who knows? If it's food eat it;if it's a phone number CALL IT!"

In "Jealousy" Sally says "Well, I should call home but after midnight my cat won't answer the phone."

Those also crack me up!

Hello, friends! I'm back from my cruise rested and ready!! I've enjoyed catching up on this board. You guys were busy while I was gone!

My "laugh out loud" episode is "Coast-to-Coast Big Mouth. I always fall over laughing at the look on Rob's face when he asks her what embarrassing thing she said and she says, "Alan Brady is bald." He laughs and hugs her and then reality hits him! I LOVE that look on his face! Just reading the other responses on this thread make me laugh. They are all great moments!

I really had to give this one some thought. I mean, I love our show as much as anyone, but I know all the punch lines!
Then I came across this little exchange;

Rob: Where are they now?
Laura: She mailed 'em.
Rob: (laughs hysterically)
Laura: Rob, are you alright?
Rob: (still laughing) I couldn't be worse!
Millie: Rob? What can I do?
Rob: (still laughing) Take advantage of my temporary insanity, and get outta here!
Laura: (consoling him with a hand on the shoulder) Darling...
Rob: (still laughing) Don't touch me!

It still cracks me up!

I came across one the other night that cracked me up. It was the episode where Sally became a regular on the Stevie Parsons Show. Rob and Buddy were struggling to get the script written and had just spooled the typewriter ribbon all over the floor. Mel walked in and asked "What do you two think you're doing?" Buddy replied, "Making licorace whips, what does it look like we're doing?

I forgot to add, later in that same scene Mel said something like, "You'd better have that script ready soon. Alan's been chewing my head off..." Rob, looking at Mel's bald scalp, interrupted with, "Oh, is that how that happened?" :happyface

Rob: How did you get beer and eggs in your hair?
Sally: I was attacked by a band of bootleg chickens!

I LOVE "Coast to Coast Big Mouth"! The whole ep. is a classic, no doubt, but this exchange gets me every time:

Rob:I'm surprised you didn't tell about Alan's nose being fixed.
Laura:I didn't know Alan had a nose job!
Rob:Well, up till now, it was a secret!

From Harrison B. Harding of Camp Crowder, Mo

Rob: Your really nuts about me aren't you?
Laura: Not really but Ritchie likes you and I hate to waste food.

haha!

Also, I love the look on Rob's face when he is having this conversation.

Harrison: Robert Petrie. hahaha
Rob: Harrison B. Harding ha?ha?ha? with a confusing look on his face.

Hilarious!!!

Yes, indeed, Large Bad. (I mean "Big Bad"...hehe.) :)

Also please note (and be quick on the Pause button) the expression on Rob's face just after he realizes the foolish nature of what he's just uttered, after he says: "We always have a little coffee & cake before dinner." :)

From Bupkis: In the first scene Rob is showing off his "perfect yolks" to Richie and Laura comes in through the door, bumps his arm and he breaks them. Rob: "You made me break my yolks!" Laura: "Well, you were going to have to break them eventually right?"

Later on in the episode Laura is putting together a puzzle and in his excitment about writing to Buzzy Potter Rob slides her puzzle across the table and it scatters on the floor. Rob: "Honey, I'm sorry - I'll fix it, don't worry....."
Laura continues to glare at him, heartbroken. Rob, to justify says: "You made me break my yolks."

..It's funnier to watch than to explain. :D

i just watched the episode where rob buys a new tarantula. one
of the funniest things i've ever seen him do (and this is also one of the
first scenes i remember that ho0ked me on to the show when i was a
wee lad ;) ) is when he's explaining to his attorney on the phone that
there was a "SCRATCH UP and DOWN THE WHOLE CAR!!" and
the base of the phone goes flying. yet another example of dick van
dyke's flawless physical humor.

"Scratch My Car and Die" is an episode that I always thought would make a good one-act play. The staging is fairly limited, you never see the car and the universality of the subject matter could apply to any random characters, not just uniquely Rob and Laura. A great ep!

in "Whasington vs. the bunny" when Buddy insults Mel, then Mel turns to Rob and says "Rob, I didn't come here to be the butt of his jokes!" Then Buddy says "Oh, whos jokes did you come here to be the butt of?"

And the time when Buddy's insulting Mel, then Mel, exasperated, puts his hands up to his head, and Buddy says "Oh go ahead, tear your hair out."

And the time when Mel says to Alan, "Now, just shutup and go to rehersal, Alan." Alan turns and glares at Mel and says "Shut up and go to rehersal? Don't do that. You're not that important."

And in the same scene, after Alan leaves, Rob asks Mel why he prevented Alan from seeing something, and Mel says "Because he let me have coffee with him this morning." Rob says "He never let you have coffee with him?" and Mel says "No. He says I make him naushes."

Also, the time when Mel's talking about Alans house and says "It's my brother-in-laws house, and I can certainley visit there whenever I want-when Alan's not home."

This thread came to mind today as I was watching the episode "Somebody Has to Play Cleopatra." The scene that makes me laugh out loud is when Hang-lip Harry is kissing Miss Harding, the kindergarten teacher, and his wife walks out the front door and starts SCREAMING, "Harry, get in the car!" He is trying to explain his way out of it and she just keeps screaming, "Harry, GET..IN..THE..CAR!!!" Harry comes back in sheepishly and says, "One of the kids is sick." I ROLL ON THE FLOOR laughing every time I see that!!!
I just think that scene is SO funny!

There are a couple, but I always get big laughs out of two eps in particular.

One is when Laura opens Robs mail and after all the problems that week, she still pops open the liferaft and is hiding behind it when Rob gets home (also MTM's favorite episode).

The other is when Laura's expected and Rob sleeps in his suit for a week. He goes back and adjusts the traincase on the dresser for the "fastest catch" and puts his fedora on the headboard and practices putting it on quickly. That whole episode is probably my all time favorite. I think they should play that one and the wrong baby one in all delivery rooms to distract mothers and give them a good laugh!

I always liked the one where they show the flashback of Rob and Laura getting married. Rob doesn't make it in time because of his ankle or foot or whatever. Anyways, Laura starts to cry because some relatives came all the way from 'O - HI - OHHH!' LOL.

Yeah, I always liked that one a lot too. Actually got a little angry with Laura for not being more sympathetic and understanding - couldn't she see he was a mess?

I also liked the scene where he's in the camp doctor's office so sick and is sneaking out to get married and the window coming down on him. I laugh out loud at that one every time also!

Carl Reiner based that episode on an incident that happened with one of his kids. And they got the idea for that scene from the advice that a frustrated vetrenarion gave, when he said "Let him wear a pith helmet!"
In the scene, though, they had Richie also wear sunglasses because he looked so cute.

 Plus it made it look as though they were trying to "disguise" him from the bird - as if!!

Also, I like it at the end, when they've got the bird in the cage, and Ritchie realizes that it just wanted his hair to build a nest for its impending babies and Ritchie bends down so the bird can peck his hair - and it does! You can see that it surprises all of them - it wasn't necessarily supposed to happen but it was like the bird did it on cue!

One episode that always makes me laugh is the one where Rob takes the phone apart trying to stop the clicking noise. Now take all the parts put them in a paper bag wave it over your head and scream like a chicken. always cracks me up.
Another one is where they have the flash back about buying the house and the realtor is showing Rob the basement, Now here is your fuse box, your rock and your wet bar, and the look on Robs face when he stares at the rock.
