GARFIELDKOOL 01-19-2005, 11:55 AM Money is money, no matter who's making it. He should have been glad somebody was helping him pull weight. Brian Damage 01-19-2005, 12:37 PM I guess that's why Florida on Maude didn't match up with Florida on GT. James was very old fashioned and didn't want his wife to work. Lady T 01-21-2005, 02:24 AM I guess that's why Florida on Maude didn't match up with Florida on GT. James was very old fashioned and didn't want his wife to work. James was very old fashioned, but then again you want think he would put his pride away and allow Florida to work to help with the bills and for the extra cash for food and clothing for their three children... hch 01-21-2005, 03:57 PM You were right about James being old Fashioned. I mean, he wouldn't even let Florida go to school to get her diploma. He only wanted her to stay at home- no job , no nothing! I thought that Florida had her say about this matter in "Florida Flips" and I thought that James would be for it after that episode. Florida did have a point. There was a whole world beyond the ghetto apartment and it wasn't fair that the kids and James are experiencing new jobs, new discoveries and feelings and she is left standing in the dust. Florida just wanted to be more than just a wife, mother, housekeeper and nursemaid, which was what James restricted her activities to. Old Fashioned? Try sexist. AquaHarmony 02-08-2005, 07:53 PM I did not pick up that James did not want Florida to work, simply because he was bull-headed and chauvenistic, even though he could be, at times. I picked it up that he just took pride in the fact that his wife did not have to go out, and hustle, he felt as a man, he should do that, for the most part. On the other hand, there was a time, if I remember correctly, Florida wanted to go to school, and when she did start, James kept yapping about all the stuff that was not getting done around the house, but he eventually relented, and understood, Florida needed her high school diploma. It was the time. In today's world it is accepted. Who are we to say how somebody should or shouldn't react to certain situations. It is TV. If he was happy for her then what? I understand that, but it was not that long ago, times have not changed that much since 1974, and women were pretty liberated by then. For the mid-1970s, in my opinion James was very old fashion..and in a way I agree, if he was always happy with her and her discussion, it would make a pretty dull television program, but all I am saying that for even in 1974, to me..and maybe I am wrong, but James was domineering towards his spouse, and she seemed limited on what she could do with her life without her husband's consent. Well it worked both ways. TImes have changed ALOT since then but that is my opinion. But honestly I was still in my single didgets in those days. (36 years old in case you are curious) But I think it did work both ways. If James was so dominant there were episodes where he gave in after Florida's insistance. Returning Money to a supermarket even though it would better his family. Giving up a job where he would be paid handsomely working for a shady "man of the cloth" Seems to me if he was that dominant the family would have escaped the ghetto much earlier. As the above situations are not strife. They are generally answered prayers from desperate people. Lady T 03-02-2005, 01:11 AM Well it worked both ways. Yes, James did give in to Florida at times, but he still was a dominant pressence in that family; he was the eptiome of a "Strong, African-American" male..which during that time period the male was not considered the head of the household anymore. You saw a lot of women that were single and working andtaking care of the family..like One Day at a Time and Alice in the mid-1970s. As for escaping the ghetto, in real life yes, but remember this was a television show based on a poor family living in the projects of Chicago. The Evans family did not have a lot of money, but did practice strong values, and that is the reason why you saw James give back the money he found that was stolen, etc, etc. :) GeorgeWBushGOP 03-02-2005, 09:34 PM James did give into Florida at times like we both agree. So he was not totally dominant. There are no other shows to gauge this to from the time. One Day at a Time you really compare to the post James Good Times. John Amos was a menacing looking person as it was. Had a tough look about him which suggested he was not a guy to be scrapping with. He did have a tough guy facade, which underneath was an emotional and proud man. |
