View Full Version : Speed Boat Hit and Run
unsolvedfan55 12-31-2004, 03:46 AM There are so many stories I'd love to get updates on like many on this board :) I saw this story again last week about the 3 women in the boat, this speed boat came out of no where and drove literally full speed right through their boat. The one woman had her face nearly ripped right off. The speed boat had a woman and a guy, and the women were yelling at him to help and he just stood there in his boat and said something to his gf/wife? then he speeded off.
CrushedVelvet 01-01-2005, 03:19 AM I will never forget this case. Ever. It was chilling. I cannot believe that someone never turned in the guy since others HAD to have known he did it. That girl was so brave!!!
dynoguy88 01-02-2005, 12:53 AM This was a disturbing case. I can't stand the fact that this person is out there probably living his normal life with no disregard about what he did to the girl whose face was pretty much ripped off.
I think what makes this case extra difficult to solve is the fact that the boat driver and his girlfriend were probably vacationing at that lake, and being from out of town, maybe living hundreds of miles away, theres not much chance of them returning to the scene of the crime.
CrushedVelvet 01-03-2005, 04:49 AM True...but what always gets me on these types of cases is you would think after all these years that someone would have "talked" or that someone watching UM would put 2 and 2 together with someone they knew that was there, etc. If I recall correctly, they had a lot of details about the suspects to offer the public.....
dynoguy88 01-04-2005, 12:55 PM I don't know if this is one of those kinds of cases where someone talks too much which leads to a capture. With many murderers who like to kill, they can't help but brag to others about their dirty deed. This case, however was a little different. These people, most likely weren't your typical killers. They were just acting like a couple of idiots driving recklessly and stupidly which lead to this horrible accident. They probably never even meant to hurt anyone in the first place. Their biggest mistake was being cruel and heartless enough to ignore the ladies pleas for help after the accident, choosing to save their hides and leaving the ladies to die, for all they knew.
tina13 01-28-2005, 12:02 PM I too was disturbed and captivated by the hit and run, so much so that it inspired my 16th novel that's coming out this October (In Too Deep, St Martin's Press). If anyone has any more information on this, for example, names of the women involved, I would love to get in touch with them. Perhaps my book could revive the case with publicity, as I want justice for those women. My book is about a woman who lost her father and was scarred because of a car hit and run when she was a girl. When a young girl in Miami is involved in a hit and run boating accident and is also scarred, my heroine throws herself into finding out who did it to find closure and justice for both of them.
Cheers,

Blackout 01-29-2005, 03:52 PM this is the one case on UM that actually made me feel naghteus. just hearing the descriptions from one of the other women about what her friends face looked like before they got to the hospital was pretty damn disgusting, she went as far as saying the skin on her entire face was ripped off :barf:

This is the story I was searching for. Does anyone remember the ladies name?
mistagee 10-21-2005, 03:07 PM naghteus...sometimes i feel naghteus, and thats when i call up my girlfriend and ask to come over :)

reportertype 10-22-2005, 09:57 PM TCU,
Don't know if this will be useful or helpful to you, but I used to live in this area and worked at one of the papers there. I remember the Denton Record-Chronicle covering this case when it happened as well as the Dallas Morning News. Also, I remember the Dallas Observer doing a big piece on it at one point a few years after it happened. The guy that wrote it had a huge fight trying to come up with some documentation about it from law enforcement agencies. I can probably figure out bylines to search under if you need them.
giovanni1965 10-29-2005, 12:18 PM For all of you interested in this case go hear http://www.senate.state.tx.us/75r/senate/memebrs/dist12/pr97/p052097a.htm It talks about how she helped change boating laws. And how inspirational ahe has been to others.

The link isn't working. Did you type it in right?
giovanni1965 10-30-2005, 11:34 AM Sorry dynoguy, try this. www.senate.state.tx.us/75r/senate/members/dist12/pr97/p052097a.htm if this doesn't work try putting her name in the search engine on google and click on The Texas state senate-Jane Nelsonpress releases.
giovanni1965 10-30-2005, 11:42 AM Hey dynoguy. for some odd reason everything I typed in for the address well it cut almost all of it off. why I'm not sure. It's kind of strange. Try the search engine and come back hear and you try to type it in, I bet it does the same thing. Why I'm not sure, maybe there is a few words or numbers in there they don't allow hear. Or maybe the address is just to long. In any event good luck.
www.senate.state.tx.us/75r/senate/members/dist12/pr97/p052097a.htm
I typed it again I don't know if this will work, it might come out like the rest.
giovanni1965 10-30-2005, 11:45 AM This time it took but didn't high light so you could click on it sorry.
AVERMAN 01-18-2007, 12:26 AM Just saw this story on YouTube.
I actually got a bit queasy listening to the horrific injuries the poor girl suffered. I also wonder how UM were able to re-create such a scene without risking the life of the actress who played Stephanie.
I don't understand why this case is taking so long to solve. An anonymous person contacted police saying he knows who did it and was trying to convince the suspect to turn himself in.
I think they need to look at the boat. They need to find out if any boat repairs were made that would fit the criteria RS states at the end of the segment. Surely someone else would have seen a damaged boat being trailored by the 4WD that night. I also find it odd that there was absolutely nobody else near the little wharf where the incident took place.
Any new development/updates with this story?
DarkDante 01-18-2007, 01:29 AM ^ Hit and run accidents are notriously hard to solve in my opinion after the fact. If you can escape the scene of the crime without anyone noticing any of your particulars (in the case of a car the most obvious piece of information would be your license plate number) you are halfway "home-free".
In this case there was someone who suspected someone of the crime but suspecting someone and naming them are two different things. So there might be some reasons known only to that person why they have not come forward to identify that person. As far as the damaged boat, the person could've easily had it repaired in some out of state/out of area repair shop or simply has it locked up or buried/sunk it somewhere. Heck it took the authorities over ten years to find Lisa Marie Kimmell's car cause the scumbag Dale Eaton had buried it.
dynoguy88 01-18-2007, 01:35 AM I've always worried that these morons were probably out of towners, just there at the lake vacationing. All they would have to do is choose not to go there anymore. There's no way to track who was there that day.
Sadly, the only way I see this case being solved is if someone talks. And there's probably not much chance of that happening.
bugnpinky 07-18-2009, 03:38 PM If there's another thread for this I'm sorry. I can find only this thread. Just re-watched this episode, did a google search which led me to websleuths, which led me to this links posted there:

*snipped*17 June 1995 Stephanie Booker was in a boat on Lake Lewisville in Texas. She and two friends were headed toward Charlie's Pier 121 Marina when a cigarette styled boat hit the rear of their craft and sped away. She remembers seeing the hull before its propeller struck her and reported she could feel her face being ripped off. Her face was almost cut into three parts. She was life flighted to Methodist Medical Center in Dallas. This accident was covered many more times in the media over the next few years, including coverage of legal actions, efforts to identify the hit and run boat and/or boat operator, a surprise search of about 3,000 boats at the Lake in July 1995, searching for wreckage on the lake bottom, possible involvement of a professional athlete, expiration of time limits to find the hit and run, the case being on a television program called 'Unsolved Mysteries", etc..

The thread at WS. This athlete may or may not have been involved....but I can't seem to find any update. I never did like him ever.....but his not "making right" this situation--even if not involved, it was very likely his property--disgusts me.

Thanks for posting those links. I never knew about Dennis Rodman being questioned about his boat.
There is another thread on here about Stephanie Booker. A few people here have the theory that the couple in the other boat were having an affair and they might not have wanted to come forward because of the spouses, boyfriends or girlfriends.
bugnpinky 07-18-2009, 04:26 PM The affair theory makes sense as well, especially if they could be tied to a high-profile basketball player (at the time). If it wasn't him in the boat (a good possibility) then it's possible another player or just someone in his entourage messing around on the side and took it out for a joyride. But then, a part of me (unprofessional armchair opinion of course) suspects that it's more because of the boat being tied to a famous person and the horribleness of it keeps them silent. I never heard about this....I will guess that money or some other whatever (statute of limitations?) got in the way.
baloony 05-31-2012, 09:07 AM I really do think that the boat has been torched by now. There is just no way the person or persons responsible would keep it around after that night.
Hambone2421 05-08-2015, 03:53 PM I'm pretty surprised that the guilty parties have not been identified in this case. With boat logs and whatnot out there, it seems like there should be some sort of record of them being on the water that night.
I do agree with a previous poster that the boat was probably destroyed shortly afterwards.

I have gone to lake lewisville for years....due to the fact that I know people that have a spot on the marina. People that frequent that lake often are generally well known to one another. Now that was a long time ago and clearly someone got very lucky that the circumstances favored their ability to go undetected. But I do feel there are people out there that know the truth and just never came forward just as LE pointed out on UM. I'm surprised this is still UM. But one thing to note is lake lewisville is one of the more popular lake destinations in DFW.
DazzlerSparkler 05-09-2015, 11:41 PM How is she doing now?
DALLASTEXAN!! 05-11-2015, 09:30 AM How is she doing now?
Last I heard she was good..still hoping for the perpetrators to be identified. That was a few years back though.
DALLASTEXAN!! 04-15-2020, 12:28 AM Sadly this case went unsolved and doesn't even seem relevant anymore. Although I can't believe I didn't find out more about it over the years. One important detail about this lake is that it is located in a populated suburban area of DFW. In fact if you ever fly into DFW, right before you land you will probably circle around this lake or a few others that are nearby. Some people keep their boats docked on the 2 or three marinas that are there, but there are other people that use that lake who are from the local area and they commute with their boats on the norm. There are a lot of lakes in north texas. All of them are unique from one another. People go to different ones for different reasons. For Lewisville lake, it's a recreational lake that people like to camp, boat, and party because it is a decent size. I don't know that a lot of people necessarily go there from out of town unless by out of town they live in another part of the DFW metro area. This has the characteristics of someone who was used to being there, but was extremely reckless and heavily intoxicated. after the accident they were functional enough to react and get home, which to me sadly shows that they were somewhat experienced in boating and definitely knew better! although I guess it could have been a prank, law enforcement claimed that there was a tipster that called in that claimed to know the identity of the perpetrator. IIRC the investigators held on to this as their best lead in the case which leads me to believe it was sincere tipster. For me this supports the theory that this was a local who was well known by others to frequent the lake. I'm thinking at least one or more other people knew, but did not come forward out of loyalty to the perpetrator. I think the perpetrator was a local that lives in the area and likely frequented that lake for many years and is still possibly going. As for the Rodman angle. that is interesting, but it wasn't him. Was it his boat, I don't think that it was although there is mixed information online. Rodman could have been a suspect because he was seen at the lake on that day and he was a prominent figure that was known to get into trouble over the years. a convenient suspect, but nothing more.
bugnpinky 04-15-2020, 12:33 AM It’s always relevant, as long as it’s unsolved. And the Rodman angle is confirmed as a good possibility per the link. His boat was in the marina that night

thanks for the reply! I was thinking about starting a new thread to see if anyone was interested in talking about similar cases that basically have little to no chance of being solved or prosecuted, but are still on peoples minds. there are so many threads like that on here already though.
this is one that I always remember and wish that there could have been closure. the person that did this got very lucky to get away.
TheCars1986 04-15-2020, 09:55 AM I'm amazed that no one ever talked about this, especially given that there had to be some sort of damage done to the other boat. The person would had to have gotten repairs done at some point in time.

Yeah it makes me wonder if they junked the boat or got it repaired. If they knew someone personally who worked on boats they could have kept it a secret, hidden away in their own home. But I suspect it is possible that at least a handful of people probably know the truth. Which makes me wonder who the tipster was.
mwcarolina 05-24-2020, 06:02 PM I’m also surprised that he’s never been caught. I actually wonder if we’ll find out who it was after they die.

This. The reason that no one ever tipped off on the boat was because the boat was destroyed and never repaired. The captain and his passenger may not have known exactly what they had done, but they realized someone was seriously injured or dead. Even for a very expensive boat, at that point it was much less costly to destroy the boat and buy a new one than pay the civil damages they were facing. The risk of trying to repair it wasn't worth getting caught so they got rid of it. Might have buried it on private property, or cut it into pieces and disposed of it that way. Lewisville has a very large landfill near the lake they may have been able to go to. DFW in general has a ton of construction going on and they could have had access to a site to put it under a foot of concrete or something also.
We know two people were on the boat, so at least two people were in on the secret. There might have been others, but realistically they had no reason to tell anyone so other than getting help in disposing of it is hard to see how more people would have known.
The caller claiming to know the guy and trying to get him to turn himself in…not sure what to think about that. I lean towards hoax for the reason that this person apparently chose never to name names which seems unlikely given how badly Stephanie was injured. They might have initially wanted the perpetrator to turn themselves in, but would they really let them off the hook if they didn't? Seems like the person with morals dictating them to try and get the perp to confess would ultimately be willing to name them if not. Conversely, who feels bad enough to call the cops three times with this, but doesn't really believe in calling the guy out if push comes to shove?
The exception to the above reasoning would be that they may have made the calls to police and tried to persuade the perp to confess and it went badly. Maybe the perp threatened them or their family, or even harmed them to keep them quiet. That might explain why they were never heard from again.
One final note, most sources indicate the statute of limitations expired on this case, but it was included in the Amazon releases. As I've said before, statute of limitations does not appear to be a consistent factor in what segments were excluded and this is another example of that.

yeah the more time goes by, it seems the less I know about this segment. It is frustrating especially because I've been to Lake Lewisville many times. It can be a dangerous place because people often drink too much and die on the lake. I do know that it would be very difficult to get rid of a boat without help or someone else having knowledge of it. My guess is the boat would have been hidden somewhere for a time before it was moved again. who knows if it got repaired, sold, or destroyed. I also wonder if the two individuals spent the rest of their days on the lake participating in recreation. that means it is very possible that I crossed paths with them and never knew it.

A couple of points. While there could be a SOL from the criminal side.. There wouldn't be for a civil suit, so far as I know.
the two people on the boat.. If we assume husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend.. It is rather surprising that they didn't break up and then the story comes out. This is what surprises me more than the boat not being found.
As for the boat itself.. Who knows how far from home they were? If they had hauled the boat from North Carolina.. Maybe they got it repaired there, and it wouldn't be on the radar as being in an accident in FL. This was a Florida case, right? I don't remember.. So, sub in wherever it happened.
Here's the one thing that I'm almost positive of.. This was a BUI situation. Boating under the Influence.

Yes, but once the criminal SOL runs out LE with its considerable powers to investigate no longer cares so there isn't much chance of tracking them down. Also, as far as UM is concerned, that angle would be true of many of the cases which were left out, so it doesn't seem to explain that situation.
Lots of people don't break up. Yes 50% of marriages fail, but importantly 50% don't. Even if it did happen, it may have been years later when proving it would be all but impossible. Either might have claimed that the other was piloting when it occurred, with no way to prove who was at the helm. Bringing it up could expose them both to significant lawsuits giving a good reason to keep their mouth shut. And of course the fact that the one snitched on may prove a dangerous force would also be a factor.
I rather doubt anyone would go through the effort to haul a boat to Lake Lewisville from North Carolina or any other place a significant distance. Its a man made reservoir meant to provide water to DFW (No its not a Florida case, its Texas). It has I-35 running through part of it, an enormous landfill to the other side, and either mudflats or row upon row of McMansions in every other direction. Its hardly what would be called a destination lake, definitely more of a place for people from DFW to get drunk and act stupid close to home. Not impossible they were from well outside the area, but I would be surprised.

I agree, it was a local. there are a lot of other lakes in Texas as well that are not very far away. Most of the people that boat on Lewisville live near the lake or on the lake. Unfortunately it is possible that the perpetrator never got caught and still goes to the lake now, or did for many years.
DALLASTEXAN!! 10-06-2024, 12:13 PM A couple of points.
I agree that it was most likely a BUI situation. People go to that lake to drink. it has that reputation for being dangerous. that's the only why to explain why they didn't render aid. both were likely drinking. if only one were drinking it would be too easy to say the other was operating the boat. I could see a scenario where maybe both were married to other people (or one was married) and their instant reaction was to cover that up. Regardless of the relationship circumstances, I don't really see a reason where one the two would turn on the other since both could be found liable in some way. Now it is possible that a friend or some other associate was made aware. That would be the only way this case would be solved. We don't know if the anonymous person who came forward to authorities was sincere or a bogus prank.
Jarlaxle 12-17-2024, 05:54 AM One thing I'll note...the boat is referred to as a "Mercury cruiser", but...that's not a boat brand. It is an ENGINE company, presumably a Mercury Marine/Mercruiser.

what are you thoughts on the segment? do you think that a local was the perpetrator and what do you think was done with the boat? repairs or was it hidden?

Likely not a local, or at least, not a regular at that spot. (Someone would have known them.) Might have been a newly-purchased boat, or even someone from a dealer joyriding.
I would be surprised if it was not either sunk somewhere or chopped up and burned-or if the person was from far outside the area, possibly clandestinely repaired (and probably painted), and maybe sold outside the area.

maybe sunk at another nearby lake?
I think it could have been someone from out of town as well. that said, everyone I have ever met at Lake Lewisville is from the local area. A lot of people like myself visit family members who live there and do entertaining/camping on the lake. It seems like a tight community, that's where I agree that someone would have known about it if it were a local. I still think that maybe someone does know.
There are a lot of lakes in Texas and most people go to their local lake unless they have a specific reason to visit, like fishing or visiting someone. I could also see a scenario where someone is new to the area and wrecks their boat on one of their first outings because maybe they lack experience. Alcohol consumption is a major problem at that lake. always has been.
