View Full Version : Heidi Wyrick
Flying Dutchman 12-18-2004, 02:12 AM I saw i think it was on penn and tillers Bull s%*t that i saw the true story of heidi wyrick and they exposed the family as perputrating a hoax i dont remember exactly how they did it but if you get showtime with penn and tiller you might see it one day.
UMfan77 12-19-2004, 10:27 AM The Heidi Wyrick haunting is a hoax? That stinks, I thought that story about her seeing her dead neighbors was really fascinating. I don't get the Showtime network, so I had no idea that it was all a hoax. The Wyrick's should be ashamed of themselves; what a childish thing to do. They even made little Heidi lie on TV.
yolate 12-20-2004, 12:26 AM Does anybody have any more info on this? I googled "Heidi Wyrick" and didn't find anything about Penn and Teller or the case being a hoax. However, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that it was a hoax.

UMfan77 12-27-2004, 01:49 PM Last night (12/26) I watched a 2 hour documentary on A&E about Heidi Wyrick, it was called "Haunting in Georgia". It's been on TV before and I'm surprised that it was on TV again, since the whole thing was a hoax. Has anyone else seen this documentary on A&E?

Allierain 01-12-2006, 01:06 AM I'd love to see a link to something that states the case is a hoax.

Awsi Dooger 03-11-2006, 03:00 AM I don't know about a hoax, but I've confirmed it's not the middle segment
morrisonsMYmuse 12-15-2007, 11:54 PM it most certainly is true.
i know Heidi... we went to middle and high school together.
we were pretty good friends. she's a total sweetheart.
this girl would never lie to get attention. she's very shy.
she would never make something like that up.
no it was not a hoax i know the family all that sh** and more has and still does happen to them

I agree.
I remember this case very well. I saw some story about Heidi a few years ago- I cannot remember if it was on Discovery or Court TV. In any case, I'd love to see links if anyone has them. I've also heard that the story was a hoax but I have seen no evidence of this so far.
Lawyer Mike 01-06-2008, 06:02 PM So I'm confused.... it was a hoax? Is there any linkage to it?
Hi! I am a lawyer in Houston who is very interested in this case. Do you know if this incident is recounted in any book?

I would very much like to contact any of the Wycoffs. Can you give them my e-mail address? Do you know if a book was ever written about this haunting? Thanks.
leafygreens 01-25-2008, 01:29 PM Hi! I am a lawyer in Houston who is very interested in this case. Do you know if this incident is recounted in any book?
Yeah there's a book about it called "The Veil."
crystaldawn 01-25-2008, 01:48 PM There is a website about the book as well:

Todd Mueller 01-26-2008, 01:13 AM Is it just me or does this thread have an extrodinary amount of "1 (or 2) post" people on it?
Obviously people just want to make a statement and leave. I guess there's nothing wrong with that. I just found it odd.
Hmmm i remember watching this segment. It was very chilly and sad at the same time.
GI Jane 02-21-2008, 08:56 PM I have a friend that moved to Harris County, Ga. 12 years ago, and she said the Heidi Wyrick case is all a hoax. Heidi's parents were having money problems and made Heidi tell all these lies for the media attention, so they could write this book. Think about it, if there were really a ghost in their house scratching them in the middle of the night, wouldn't you as a parent get the hell out of there and not look back? Decent parents would want to protect their children. But what do the Wyricks do, THEY CONTINUE TO LIVE IN A HOUSE WITH 'EVIL SPIRITS!" Its sad this girl had parents that made her lie, just because they were having money problems and saw no other alternative. My friend says they are rednecks and trashy people. And most of the people living in that area don't believe them, and neither do I. This is all a GIANT HOAX!

...And yet not one single shred of evidence corroborates about anything you just said, especially about it being a hoax. No news reports, no books, no "Penn and Teller" show like the person who started this thread mistakenly thought, NOTHING... only personal beliefs from people like you.
Maybe it *is* a hoax, but the point I'm making is that there isn't one source you can show me about this story that has any sort of financial details, in-depth reporting that uncovers it as a lie, or anything. There is nothing to prove any sort of financial distress, greed, or some other motive to do this.
Go ahead, Google it. Amazing thing this internet, huh... it's a catalog of ALL SORTS OF INFORMATION! And yet...
NOT ONE. All of it is hearsay which even you, GI Jane, must admit that any evidence your all-knowing friend possesses is.
Just in case you didn't know:
hear•say –noun:
1. unverified, unofficial information gained or acquired from another and not part of one's direct knowledge: I pay no attention to hearsay.
2. an item of idle or unverified information or gossip; rumor: a malicious hearsay.
–adjective:
3. of, pertaining to, or characterized by hearsay: hearsay knowledge; a hearsay report.
A final word, I bet that if you did a little digging through a P.I., you'd find that the family didn't make a whole lot of money off of this. A Discovery Channel documentary and a third rate book doesn't equate to a lot of money in the bank. Neither does internet fame. If anyone saw the most recent South Park, you'd know that "theoretical internet dollars" don't really mean real money!
I don't for one second think that what GI Jane's friend said is the actual view of that family in that town, but if I'm wrong and they are quite unpopular and thought of as trash?? Well, having been to that area quite a bit, I'd be prepared to make a judgment, too ...And it's one that is based purely on hearsay and speculation like her friend's! I'd say it's the same "open minded" extreme Bible Belt judgments that condemn blacks, homosexuality, and call rock and roll evil that is vilifying this family.
...And I feel sorry for them.

Are you a Wyrick family member? Just curious, as you seem awfully upset over this. I don't have a dog in this fight so I don't care either way, but based on your reaction you sound like you know the family or have inside information. Feel free to share anything you can here.

CanadianUMFan 04-07-2008, 01:24 AM I am pretty sure that I have seen all of the Penn and Teller Showtime episodes and they don't talk about this case at all. My personal opinion is that this is not a "hoax". I really can't see this family making all of this up although I have no explanation as to what is happening with Heidi.

Hey, Todd Mueller!
Nope, no relation at all, no dog in the fight either... I actually don't have much emotion written into that, though. It's just my writing style, and I usually only write *anything* in a forum if I can already back it up.
Why I feel the need to respond to posts like GI Jane’s is NOT because I might/might not be a family member -or might/might not have even ever been in a one hundred mile radius of the family- it’s because I’m a legitimate truth seeker. So, in cases like this, yes… the whole "my brother’s cousin’s daughter who lived there once said that the family sucks and are horrible people" does indeed disturb me! lol…
And actually, I want to say that I've been a big DEBUNKER of the paranormal before, including some of "Ghost Hunters" best evidence (I have a lot of information on the internet about that, especially regarding the "Ghost Soldier" episode). I love their show, I'm interested in things about the paranormal, I just like to look at all of the evidence in the proper light.... which, of course, means that most anything paranormal can be proved to be "normal". It also cuts the other way, which means that when people -for example- jump on here and say that this story in particular is a hoax, especially when they are hurling personal attacks on an entire family...
...I say SHOW ME THE EVIDENCE! lol...
Which, of course, there isn't any in this case. As far as the hearsay that GI Jane posted (by the way, I *am* getting really sick of the internet that anyone can post anything and people will believe it), ordinarily I would take those opinions into account. Sometimes it may be hearsay, but sometimes it very well may be accurate, too. Many times, you shouldn't discount what the consensus is saying!
However, there are a couple of reason why I can completely disregard what GI Jane's friend said, the first, obviously, is because there is zero evidence, whether it be from news clippings of whatever, that this was a hoax. There isn't any reports, affidavits, or even MENTION of it being a hoax except just as a blanket statement in an occasional news report that it's a controversy. Besides, normally some one WILL talk (like they did in the Amnetyville Horror case... that *was* a fraud).
Now, for example, if a mortgage broker from the local bank came out and said, "Yes... they were about to lose their house until the documentary." Then, all of a sudden, the townspeople's hearsay becomes a little more believable. Unfortunately, nothing like that has happened.
The second reason is the one that probably makes you think I'm upset, but I'm not... it's just a good rule of thumb to use when judging something like this and you are taking in all facts at hand. Also, I'm risking sounding very insulting to a very large group of good people, but I think those honest with themselves will nod their head in agreement. Here it is... it's the Bible Belt, and we are talking about the paranormal! ...And that particular region of Georgia is still very STRONG with the sterotypical mentality of condemnation of beliefs in the paranormal. Hey, I love the Southeast (I even went to U.G.A. the first two years of undergrad), I probably will never move from here, and if people reading this aren't residents... YES, we have a Starbucks on every corner, too! ...With high speed and everything!
lol... But seriously, this "taking what they say with a grain of salt" observation comes from many firsthand experiences as well as living in the southeastern United States for most of my life. The fact is, people or things that have anything remotely related to something that can be perceived as an "evil nature" are vilified... time and time again!
I'm not just picking on the Bible Belt, by the way... I think a great way to live is to always try to separate fact from opinion. You will often find that people have much bias and motivations in their feelings (and sometimes even a "hand in the pot"), and it colors what they perceive to be fact! Don't get me started about this "climate change" stuff! Talk about bias and motivations! lol...
Ok, so why is that important to what we are discussing? Time and time again throughout history, a "Bible Belt mentality" -while being responsible for much good- also unfortunately has a tendency to vilify that which is either perceived as evil or not fully understood. And by "vilify", I mean saying the exact same things as GI JANE did about the family.
Unfortunately stereotypes can be very true, and honestly... I don't think many people would be shocked at what I'm saying about the "villagers hurling accusations at the witches", anyway (maybe just that I have the balls to do it).
So I do hope no one was offended about my "Bible Belt" observations. If you are, get over it... I'm certainly not talking about religion as a whole here! I'm talking about a very specific mindset that I don't agree with because it "colors" perception and makes people have too much bias.
That's it! Excuse my typos... I'm in a hurry!

Thanks for the reply! Lots of good info. What you said makes sense. I was just curious if you knew the family because it is always cool to hear first-hand (or second-hand) info on these UM stories. There are several people who were on UM or relatives of UM victims that post here. I just wondered if you were one of those.
Your points are well taken and give us all more to think about. It's just too bad ghost stories can never be proven or disproven beyond a reasonable doubt.
Take care,
TM
dallasj 06-12-2008, 08:42 PM I know the family for a few years, right around the time heidi was starting to see mr gordy, i dated her aunt and we both use to babysit heidi , heidi would not make this up or lie for anyone . i belived her from day one
Allierain 07-07-2008, 03:54 PM I've been waiting for a long time for some evidence that this was a hoax...still nothing.
snippydoodles 07-15-2008, 11:38 PM My mom keeps my 3 yr. old niece during the day. About 3 or 4 months ago, my niece began talking about a "man in the hallway" at my mom's house. She also said he stands beside my dad's recliner. At one point, my sister (my niece's mom), her husband and my mom observed her talking to someone beside my dad's recliner. There was nobody even in the living room, but she was offering a cookie to somebody and talking to them.
My sister sat down with her one night after this happened and got out some pictures. My niece identified the "man" as my Pop that died in 1975. My Pop was my dad's father. My grandmother (my dad's mother) moved into what is now my parents house right after my Pop died.
Then I saw this story about the Wyrick family on Discovery today. I had heard something about it since I'm from the same area, but never really followed up on it. It really freaked me out when I reflected on what I had been told about my niece. It has me wondering.........and now googling all about it.

I don't buy this explanation. Heidi's parents seemed so genuine. And it's not like Heidi has made a career out of this (like James VanPraag or Sylvia Browne- well known hoaxters.) The Wyrick's have made a TV appearance and have written a book. Not exactly prolific. I'm not sure if UM paid any of their guests, but it couldn't have been much. Then, the book didn't come out for like 10 years after the UM episode. That's not really making a quick buck, is it? If they wanted to make so much money, then why would they tell Heidi when she was 9 to make up stories for the next several years, just so they could write a book a decade later? I know an author, who makes approximately $1 or $2 off each book. When you only sell a couple thousand, that is hardly any money at all. Not to mention you don't have any proof about this theory, just small town gossip which is almost always false. I just don't see how this story could have paid the family's bills.
wvbig 11-26-2008, 04:34 PM I know Heidi's dad's cousin, who is a minister, & he's never said anything to me about it being a hoax. I totally believe the story. I don't believe in benevolent spirits except for angels. I think one or more demonic spirits were disguising themselves as the spirits of these people who were known as good people when they were alive, until they had a foothold in the house & then started showing their true colors when Lisa was pregnant with Jordan. I think the timing may have just been a coincidence. It would be great if I would get to meet them through Andy's cousin someday

Skeptics always claim people like the Wyricks are hoaxing to make money. I'm a Bigfoot researcher & we get accused of it all the time by skeptics. The truth is that Bigfoot research COSTS us money. It doesn't make most of us any. Unfortunately there is one big Bigfoot research organization that hosts "expeditions" for anyone with a few hundred dollars. For the entry fee, they furnish NOTHING!! and allow participants to take home any evidence they find. No true scientific organization allows just anybody to pocket potential evidence. There have been accusations of hoaxing by former members. But to be fair, the hoaxing accusations are unsubstantiated. Everything else is stated on their website. This organization gives those of us who believe Bigfoot exists & want to prove it exists so it can be saved from extinction, a black eye.

I really don't think this was a hoax in the manner of the Amityville house, or that the Wyricks are rednecks looking for 15 minutes of fame. I think the family are just ordinary, plain living folks who were most likely targeted because they were simple, religious people. On that point, I am speaking from experience.
I truly believe these evil entities go after the youth in good, religious families, to distract them with the supernatural and eventually pull them completely off their path of christianity. From the last I saw on dramatizations and updates, this elaborate deception failed, since Heidi has grown up and the whole family are still going to church.
Can you confirm, possibly through the cousin, that the family is all healthy and doing well after this experience?
Mage29 01-26-2009, 05:22 PM People can believe what they want to believe, but personly through experiences I have had, and things I have seen. I can believe that the Wyrick Haunting was true, I just hope that by now they have accepted the fack that they have a gift, and that it is not so bad to have, they just need to learn how to controll it, and not let it have a upper hand on them.
yuppielawyer 01-26-2009, 09:24 PM Whether it's mental illness or a fraudulent hoax, I still don't believe it. I find it pretty amusing that people are demanding evidence of it being a hoax. There's no evidence it isn't! How do you prove that something supernatural didn't happen? I don't believe in evil spirits or hauntings or ghosts. I believe in things that can be proven.

You are correct. It is impossible to prove a negative.
desdemoana 08-17-2009, 07:24 PM I saw the show for the first time today, and while looking for more information about the participants, I found this forum.
I found the episode interesting, those of us watching today all felt that if we'd been in that situation, with a young child, we would have run for the hills yesterday, not tomorrow.
Anyway, my 2 cents, because I just had to say it:
I think shadyfreak was actually the demon/bad ghost, who managed somehow to get online and was heartily ticked off by the idea that people were snickering and calling the whole thing a hoax. After all, would you like to be labeled a hoax if you were a ghost?
It must be pretty tough for a ghost to get control of a keyboard. It had to have taken a lot out of him. That's why he hasn't been back.

carrol2859 02-05-2013, 10:07 AM Heidi's story is not a hoax. I've known the family for years and the Wyricks are very honest people. There's always someone out there trying to prove things they no nothing about. Those who tried to prove them to be a hoax don't know them.
1990 UM fan 02-05-2013, 10:28 PM Nothing about the Wyricks ever made me believe they were lying. Alot of people don't believe in ghosts and aren't the ones to believe that others have that gift but I can say that they are not lying. Can I prove or disprove their story? No. I can't explain it but they don't strike me as the type to lie for exposure or money.
carrol2859 02-06-2013, 08:22 AM The Wyricks are good people. I don't plan on seeing the movie because my daughter saw it and the story is nothing like the truth. She told me that it has them cussing and drinking and that's not the Wyricks. I know the movie makers have to make things worse then what they are to live up to what people expect in movies now but I have too much respect for the family and I don't want to see them portrayed that way. From what I heard about it, the story is totally off but that's todays horror films.
mikebsch 06-11-2013, 08:21 PM Won't the real Con Gordy please stand up
That's going to be kinda hard, seeing as LON & Mr. Gordy were 2 different people

BING! I think so,too. The dead are exactly where they are supposed to be,and that is one of two places. The rest and the only ones able to do this sort of thing are the wandering evil spirits that were never alive in a body here on earth at all. They are just pretending to be the dead.
That said,I thought it was interesting that heidi said con was holding his severed arm under the other,as if it had just occurred. No matter where he went in the afterlife, his arm would no longer be bleeding in his new spiritform life.
As for heidi not being able to see the mean one's face, that was interesting as well.I guess there were no evil ppl around for this entity to mimick, and not hiding his evil,he chose to not take anyone's form at all.
Just some thoughts.
