View Full Version : Rob, one sexy comedy writer
I've been going through the old posts and I've seen a lot of remarks about lovely Laura...but not too many have mentioned that Rob is a HUNK! DVD is very good looking, but I think it's really Rob's personality that makes him so very appealing. The kind of guy every girl would like to have as a life partner, I think.
SpunkiiMonkii7078 11-29-2004, 06:33 PM That is true! We are always talking about Lovely Laura aren't we? Let's give Rob a chance here! He really wasn't that bad..... especially when he sprained his body, and the cute little bandage on his nose. LOL! Now that I think of it, you're right! Geeezzz... everyone is gonna think I'm so stupid not to notice until now! LOL!
KennedyDean 11-29-2004, 08:18 PM I think the young Dick Van Dyke was VERY ATTRACTIVE! He's the main thing that attracted me to the show at first. I agree that his personality just makes him all the better. Even if you don't have the looks (which he has them) the personality always makes you more beautiful!
KennedyDean 11-29-2004, 08:19 PM I can't belive that I forgot to mention that I am obsessed with his haircut as well! That's all for now.
Ah, the Kennedy haircut. You can see why the Beatles made most parents of the time go a little nuts with that hair cut!
And yes, Rob was VERY attractive. I'm always surprised that fans rarely mention that. I liked the episode (which one was it?) where Laura defends Rob when someone calls him "skinny". "He's not skinny, he's willowy."
KennedyDean 11-30-2004, 02:02 PM Hence my screen name "KennedyDean'. Stands for JFK and James Dean. I love that haircut!
He has a self-deprecating giggle I think is adorable!
SpunkiiMonkii7078 11-30-2004, 05:23 PM LOL! It looks like we could go on and on...

Come now, Nora & ladies.
We men all know it's the "Bad Boys" who turn you on. Robert S. Petrie wouldn't stand a chance with any of you, if you were available!
Oh, he's cute enough, but he's "too sweet," and you know it!
Steve
WRONG-O!!! :p  I'll take him if no one else wants him!
KennedyDean 11-30-2004, 07:10 PM I'm with you Nora. I'll take Robert Petrie over any bad boy any day!! As long as he says "honey" at least once a day. I love how he says it!
Carrie 12-01-2004, 10:54 AM Oooooo...I agree! He is definitely one handsome man. I love the way he looks in this dark suits. Rob Petrie can sweep me off my feet any day!
jillm816 12-01-2004, 12:15 PM What I find so appealing is that he was that way in real life. Dick Van Dyke was (is!) a genuinely good, sincere guy. I remember in one of the interviews he said he just acted like himself when he played Rob Petrie. Plus he sings, he dances, he can fall out of a chair like he's made of water...How could you not love him?!

I know I am going to start something here, but I'll take my chances. Right before the recent presidential election, a local radio talk show host commented that women found John Edwards more attractive than Dick Cheney and therefore would vote for Edwards based on that. Well, you should have heard the calls. Not ONE woman who called in prefered Edwards. They all said he was too slick. EVERY ONE of them said they prefered Dick Cheney because he was intelligent and experienced. IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH LOOKS! It had everything to do with character, which Rob Petrie has oozing out of his ears. Yes, Rob Petrie happens to be fortunate enough to be physically attractive, but the things that we love most about him are his honesty, his integrity, his obvious devotion to his wife and son, his sense of humor and his "boyish charm." If men only understood what women truly find attractive, there would be very little divorce!

It sounds as if you're blaming the high divorce rate soley on the actions, or inactions, of men! If so, I doubt I'll change your mind with anything I post :wallbang , but you might want to reconsider that. Anyway, on to the subject at hand.
Ladies, every "nice guy" you meet can tell you horror stories of how he's lost a girlfriend or wife because he was simply "too nice," "too dependable," "too attentive," and therefore boring. Especially in his younger years, as Rob and Laura are. Rob works a steady job, comes straight home, helps set the table if dinner is a little late, or stops for Moo Goo Gai Pan to surprise his wife. He reads to his son before bedtime, and I dunno how he is about birthdays and anniversaries, but I know he has no problem rolling up his sleeves and hand-dying a thundercloud costume on a moment's notice. Sounds great in theory, doesn't it? Unfortunately, it's not what the average woman seems to want in her life. But you're right Lolac, it's not just about looks. More women just seem to naturally gravitate toward a Neil Schenk, an Anthony Stone, or even a Freddy White than a Bert Monker or a Robert Petrie.
Lucky for Rob, he chose Laura, because he'd be roadkill with almost anyone else (no offense to any of you. I did say Almost)! Despite what women say they want, we men have learned this hard lesson (even if none here care to back me up on this): Women don't want nice guys around for long!

Steve, I didn't mean to blame the high divorce rate on men, believe me, I know that is not true. It takes two to make a bad marriage. What I was trying to say is that we women are not as complicated as men think. We want men who are like Rob Petrie, believe it or not. And I've known women who walk all over men like him and the women are the losers in that relationship. I'm sure my husband probably wishes I was more like Laura! I just mean that this bad boy stuff just isn't attractive. I used to think Kevin Costner was sexy until he cheated on his wife. Now I think he's a jerk. I think Mel Gibson is incredibly sexy, not because of his looks (though it helps! ) but because he is a decent man who is faithful to his wife and has a passle of kids that he loves and he is a man of conviction.
I am a staunch Republican, yet I would NEVER vote for Rudy Guiliani for President because of the abominable way he treated his then-wife when he was mayor of NY. I don't care what party the candidate is in, if he is a cad (like Bill Clinton or Rudy Guiliani) I won't be attracted to that candidate. I'm just saying that what makes women happy is not really that difficult to understand!
Do you understand? Take you, for instance. I've been on this board for quite a while now and I think you seem like a really decent guy and I enjoy our interchanges. It doesn't matter what you look like or what your politics are. So you see, Steve, it's not so hard!!
And sorry if you thought I was male-bashing. I didn't mean it to come out that way! These types of discussions can easily be misconstrued!

Steve,
I have to say your point really has me thinking. It is an interesting observation about human nature.
Is it that women don't want nice guys, or is that they don't know what they want? I tend to think that a lot of women out there may think they want a certain thing in life, like a lot of excitement or pleasure, and the guys who seem to offer that turn out to be sleazebags. The nice guys, or at least, the guys who genuinely have character and sincerity, seem boring to them because they are responsible, reliable, and all those things that seem really boring on the surface. I mean, when you're looking for excitement and heated romance, the first word that comes to mind is certainly not "responsible" or "nice".
But are these women really happy in the end? i would guess probably not. They may still get their kicks every once in a while, but I have a pretty good hunch that there is little fulfillment in seeking out the bad boys. I have a hunch that deep down they may know that in the end, in the long run, they want a Rob Petrie. You can tell by the way couples like Rob and Laura are held up as an ideal couple- they have something that people want, even though they may not be able to put their finger on what that is.
I wonder. I'm not out in that scene, much, though. I found my Rob Petrie and am very blessed to have found him
jillm816 12-01-2004, 05:33 PM Amen, Lolac.

That's a wonderful thing, jillm816. You are indeed blessed. :)

The following are MHO's only...please no one take offense. This is just my take on it.
Women generally want a man who is manly (not to say, pushy or overtly macho, but masculine and secure in who he is). They also want a man who they can't walk over (remember the scene in which Rob misses Richie's bunny stage performance and at the end Laura says, "I'm mad at ME for being mad at you?" and, "I wouldn't respect you if you let anyone walk all over you, including ME."). Women also want a friend and partner who thinks the way they do.
What a lot of caring guys mistake for "caring" is glomming! I've had a lot of nice guys in my life I've let go because they clamp on and won't let go...stuck like glue with no room for me to have my own identity. In that case, all the presents and nice words and flowers in the world couldn't make me care about them romantically.
Rob is Laura's best friend, you get that impression very firmly. They think alike, but they're not siamese twins. They also have a realization that arguments don't have to mean chisms. They disagree, they slam a few doors, then all is well. (Ah, life in a sitcom!). Rob isn't afraid of being "head" of the house, and Laura doesn't feel inferior for being a wife and mother -- she knows her roles are just as vital as his and there isn't one hint of inferiority in her.
Now if they'd just get rid of those double beds!

You know, he never STOPPED being handsome! He is STILL incredibly handsome as an elderly man.
Carrie 12-03-2004, 10:32 AM Definitely! :D
SpunkiiMonkii7078 12-03-2004, 06:32 PM Everything you guys say is so true! And, I would take Rob over a 'bad boy' any day as well!!!! The hair cut, the personality, etc., etc. I can just imagine us all having a cat fight or something over him. LOL!
I don't think it's the "bad boy" syndrome that attracts women...it's the "masculine" syndrome. Some times the bad boys come across as masculine in a woman's mind, when they're really just...well, bad! Rob is DEFINITELY masculine, he's DEFINITELY head of his family (with Laura an equal and able partner) and he's very secure in who and what he is. That makes him sexy. And I guess he's a bad boy some times...he went skiing without Laura's permission, didn't he? :D
SpunkiiMonkii7078 12-03-2004, 07:13 PM LOL! He did, he did.
LauraNamesake 07-16-2008, 11:10 PM I swear that I would marry Rob Petrie/Dick Van Dyke if I had the oppotunity. I am A LOT like Laura, so I think that I really would do well with a husband like Rob. He had the sweetest, gentlest, most charming, everything personality!!!
Not to mention, Dick Van Dyke is looks +!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My god he sweeps me away when he's wearing a suit!!!! And the way he trips!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm in LOVE!!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
hrstultz 07-18-2008, 04:25 PM I agree with you 100%, Dick Van Dyke (Rob) was very attractive in his youth. That is why I also started to watch the show, because I thought Dick Van Dyke was very cute and he is a very good actor.
Schmoopie 09-06-2008, 05:39 AM I never really thought about it before but he was pretty handsome back then-and isn't bad looking now, either!
