But I resent "pretty cool." I think the appropriate Dianist style would be "Good Lord, Diane was a fine character."
Brian Damage 11-29-2004, 01:16 AM Diane is what got me started watching Cheers.

Can one of you bigwigs change the title, then?
Also, look at the last post on bored for another title suggestion.

Well, yes.
But on the plus side, we'd always win.
slackermonkey 11-29-2004, 01:19 AM I would so join if there were a GLISFC for Diane.
Only it would be a GDISFC. Silly me.

I mixed both. I feel we should have Good Lord...because that's what she'd say.
Anyway, I think people can edit their own titles now.
Ok...so...
Ahem. I will come up with a constitution for this later. For now let's think about why you came to like Diane as a character.

actually, it's GLDGDC.
Ask Chambers, she's the president. Cause, well, in my head, at least, I equate her with Diane. Except when I'm equating her to a neurotic Bostonian academic who has a job lugging things from point A to point B.
See?

I think because she showed how irritating the intellectual elite could be at times, how contradictory their beliefs could be...
...and sometimes, some of us need that.
Also, her character pretty much paved the way for Frasier's character...and can you imagine a world without Frasier?

Diane first reminded me of my mother. Which I guess I thought was cool...when I was 6. Over the years I realized what an original and incredibly funny character she was.

So that puts me comfortably not on "Twilight Zone" ground.
slackermonkey 11-29-2004, 01:31 AM I love Diane because she's hilarious, is a great foil for the Cheers gang, and it doesn't hurt that she's not bad to look at.
I miss her facial tic. I think she only did that a few times in season 1 then it showed up again on Frasier. Wonder why they never used that as a running gag?

That's a good question. I suppose they were afraid it would get stale. And I can really see that gag getting stale quickly if it were overused.

I think if they used it too much, they would end up exploiting it, and then it wouldn't be as funny anymore.
slackermonkey 11-29-2004, 01:36 AM I'm pretty easily amused, so if it were getting stale, I'd never have noticed.
Chambers 11-29-2004, 01:49 AM Who thinks Diane's character was saved by having her leave at the end of season 5?
I personally think that had she stayed on, the character would have morphed into something unrecognizable (perhaps like what happened to Rebecca). In season 5 she was already somewhat different with the marriage obsession and all. And I got the feeling they were trying to make her more unlikeable (maybe a reflection of the reltionship between Shelley and the writers). I think having her end at the altar was perfect. I mean, that's Diane, right? A woman who never actually gets anything done. A student of life who is never able to materialize her dreams, yet who keeps following them anyway. That's how she's ingrained in our minds. Had she married and abandoned that yearning for something bigger, something better, the message behind her character would have been crippled.

I think you're right. It was in her absence that we wished for her most, and, juxtaposed against Rebecca, she just seemed so much less irritating. Because we missed Diane, we realised that we enjoyed her while she was there.
slackermonkey 11-29-2004, 01:53 AM I do. Her character was already beginning to jump the shark when she left (but it never did, fortunately).

I think the "We're going to have Frasier's mother with us always...we're going to have her stuffed." is my favorite. Currently.
And in the same episode: "Ok, it's time to take stock here: I'm...not...crazy. Right Diane? Right you are."
slackermonkey 11-29-2004, 02:13 AM I agree with the "pad, pencil, pen, pen, pen" bit.
Especially when she screams when Sam says her pencil's out of place.
Brian Damage 11-29-2004, 10:59 AM She was great in Homicidal Ham.
Chambers 11-29-2004, 08:01 PM This thread won't have a constitution because I don't want it to be a club (translation: I'm too lazy to write one). It'll just be an ongoing commentary about the genius of Diane, the character. But we can still have those spelling bee competitions with GLISFC.

I think it's in Season 2.
MaydayMalonesGirl 11-30-2004, 10:28 PM ... yeah, I'm responding to this thread a little late....
Diane was great. And she definately got better with time. I loved that in the fifth season she went completely nuts (not that she wasnt crazy before that, but the fifth season was definately the peak..). She added so much to the show just because she was a contrast to everyone.
CliffClavin 12-01-2004, 12:23 PM I always liked her first fight with Sam.

Sam: SHUT UP. Shut your fat mouth.

Sam: Make you? My God, I'm gonna... I'm gonna... I'm gonna bounce you off every wall of this office.
Diane: Try it and you'll be walking funny tomorrow. Or should I say funnier.

Sumner, however, is a close second. If for some reason, the Frasier character never occured (dont ever quote me for saying that, he was the best thing that ever happened to the show).... I think it would have been interesting for Diane to have returned to Sumner in the third season, and have them be a couple rather than Diane and Frasier.

It would have been great seeing their old relationship dynamic change as a result of the bar's influence on Diane.

Too bad I couldn't find one of her strangling Sam.
Norm's Stool 12-04-2004, 09:31 PM Diane is my favorite character from Cheers. I like her especially in Seasons 1 & 2 (and I also agree that in Season 5 she was taken to the extreme by the writers who maybe wanted to make her unlikeable because she was leaving at the end of the season; anyway, her obsession with marriage was very unlike her; at least, very unlike the "early" Diane).
My favorite Dian-ism (and the best line ever written on the show, IMO) is the one I have on my signature:
"Do you know what bothers me? There are women upon whom this (your pickup lines) works, and they’re allowed to vote and drive cars."
It's from Season 1, "Showdown Part 1" (Also, my favorite episode ever). I think that pretty sums up her view on woman's issues and relationships in general, and that's one of the many many reasons why I like her.

mstewart 12-12-2004, 07:47 PM I love the character of Diane Chamber especially in Seasons 1 through 3. During Season 4 her character was not quite the same from the previous three seasons. Season 5 she became unlikeable, she was obsessed with getting married and the Sam and Diane love/hate relationship was running its course. If the latter would had went on the show would not had lasted 11 seasons and especially if they married them off in season 5.
My favorite Diane moments:
Her and Sam's first showdown and leading into their first kiss. They were like two dogs in a river fighting it out. I love her comment, "Try that you would be walking funnier if not funnier."
Her battles with Carla especially when they had to be restrained when Diane called her hair brillo pad. In turn I love it when Carla said, "You look like a person who is tired of wearing your teeth." A near catfight.
Episode #44, I'll Be Seeing You in Part 2 when Semenko painted a portrait of Diane and she stated about how challenging her relationship with Sam has been. She stated how at times he hurt her and seemed to enjoy it. Her vulnerablilty in talking about moved me to tears.
In that same episode when they were breaking up was a powerful and dramatic moment for Shelley Long and Ted Danson. They turned in powerful performances in that breakup episode. Funny at the same time when they were exchanging face slaps and pulling each other noses.
In the series finale when she accepted her award and it was so funny when she was rambling to a point they had to take her and the podium off because she would not shut up.
Episode #41, Coach Buries A Grudge. Diane breaking into singing Amazing Grace when Coach and his buddies was angry at a friend who recently passed away. It was moving how they went from anger to singing Amazing Grace with Diane.

I agree. I often think that they went through everything possible together in those five years, lol, it would've been hard to come up with more for longer without stretching it, especially not for six more years. It would've gotten real old. For example, on Friends Ross and Rachel went from great to old around season 7 or 8, IMO. I've heard they never intended to get them married, so if she had stayed they either wouldn't have done that plot (or at least, they could've done the whole boat proposal but then never gotten them engaged) or they still wouldn't have gone through with the wedding. Which would've been the point of getting old to me. lol.
