Like anyone who reads these boards, I have my own opinions about various topics related to sitcoms, but, instead of spreading them out over multiple posts, I figure I'll put some of these opinions on one posting, to save time and space. To make them easier to read, I have made a few lists which I'd like to share with you now:

1. MOST UNDERRATED SITCOMS BY DECADE

1950s: The Phil Silvers Show/Sgt. Bilko

1960s: Car 54, Where Are You?; The Beverly Hillbillies; My Three Sons

1970s: Soap

1980s: Bosom Buddies; Square Pegs

1990s: Sabrina The Teenage Witch; Ned and Stacey

2000s: Scrubs

2. MOST OVERRATED SITCOMS BY DECADE

1950s/60s: None. As far as I'm concerned, they were all great---even the bad ones!

1970s: MASH

1980s: Archie Bunker's Place; Full House (naturally!)

1990s: Seinfeld (The all time champion!)

2000s: Arrested Development

3. BAD FIRST SEASON/GOOD SECOND SEASON

I Dream Of Jeannie
The Odd Couple
Cheers
Family Ties
Night Court
Everybody Loves Raymond

4. GOOD FIRST SEASON/BAD SECOND SEASON

The Monkees
Welcome Back, Kotter (after John Travolta left for good)
Mork & Mindy (too many changes)
A Different World (no more Lisa Bonet and Marisa Tomei)
8 Simple Rules (for obvious reasons)

5. BEST NEW SITCOMS THAT DEBUTED IN THE LAST DECADE

1993-94 Frasier
1994-95 Friends
1995-96 Caroline In The City
1996-97 3rd Rock From The Sun
1997-98 Dharma & Greg
1998-99 Will & Grace
1999-00 The Sopranos (not a great year for new sitcoms)
2000-01 Malcolm In The Midddle
2001-02 Scrubs
2002-03 8 Simple Rules
2003-04 Hope & Faith (a lot funnier than Arrested Development!)
2004-05 Joey

6. WORST THEME SONGS

1. The Patty Duke Show (no contest!)
2. Joey
3. The Drew Carey Show (Cleveland Rocks? Puh-leeze!)
4. Malcolm In The Middle
5. Scrubs
6. Charles In Charge
7. Mr. Belvedere

7. BEST SPINOFFS

1. Happy Days
2. Laverne & Shirley
3. The Andy Griffith Show
4. Frasier
5. Mork & Mindy
6. Gomer Pyle

That's all for now. I'll have more lists once I think of them.

I'm surprised you like Hope & Faith a lot more than Arrested Development.

And I actually like Joey's theme song. I don't really get why everyone hates it. Maybe because I love the Long Beach Dub Allstars and I've heard the full song. It's a good fit for the show, I think.

I disagree. "The Beverly Hillbillies" is often recognized as a true classic in the same league of shows like "The Andy Griffith Show", "Leave It To Beaver", "I Love Lucy", etc. However, shows like "My Three Sons" are not.

2. MOST OVERRATED SITCOMS BY DECADE

1950s/60s: None. As far as I'm concerned, they were all great---even the bad ones!

Again ... I disagree. I find "The Andy Griffith Show" and "The Honeymooners" to be very overrated.

1970s: MASH
1990s: Seinfeld (The all time champion!)

I agree 100 %,

6. WORST THEME SONGS

4. Malcolm In The Middle

I disagree. I find the MITM theme song to be an outstanding representation of the show itself. I would recognize it in same league of such theme songs of "Green Acres", "The Beverly Hillbillies", "Gilligan's Island", "Mary Tyler Moore", etc.

7. BEST SPINOFFS

1. Happy Days

I don't consider "Happy Days" to be a spin-off despite that its pilot episode was a "Love, American, Style" episode.

The Sopranos is not a sitcom. It's got its comedic moments, but it's no sitcom.

When you say bad do you mean rating or quiality?
Because Cheers won best comedy Emmy its first season even though it was last in the ratings.

All I said was how surprised I was that he liked Hope & Faith better than Arrested Development. Not a criticism. I was just correcting him on The Sopranos thing.

Well of course disagreeing is fine, but saying that a person has lost all credibility because they like one show over another is something different.

So why say "you people" if it's just one person you feel was jumping on the guy?

I stand by what I said, prefering Hope & Faith over Arrested Development loses all credibility, in my book.

Well if a person loses credibility in your book because of their preference in television sitcoms, then you have a pretty screwed up book. Definitely one that I don't plan on reading...

And for the record, I can think of about one hundred shows I prefer over Arrested Development, and if that makes me lose credibility in your book, fine, I don't care.

I have watched "Hope & Faith" since this season started. I watch every show on TGIF. I laugh at "8 Simple Rules" and "Less Than Perfect". "Complete Savages" is getting better. But "Hope & Faith" is the worst show, not only of the night, but of all current sitcoms. And that's saying something. This is of course my opinion. But I haven't laughed once at that show. "Arrested Development" is funny. Sure it's not for everyone. But it's for me.

I also disagree with many of the shows on this list.

1993-94 Frasier
1994-95 Friends
1995-96 Caroline In The City
1996-97 3rd Rock From The Sun
1997-98 Dharma & Greg

2000-01 Malcolm In The Midddle
2001-02 Scrubs
2002-03 8 Simple Rules
2003-04 Hope & Faith (a lot funnier than Arrested Development!)
2004-05 Joey

Here's mine:

1993-94 Boy Meets World & Ellen (Midseason)
1994-95 NewsRadio (Mid season)
1995-96 Ned & Stacey
1996-97 Everybody Loves Raymond
1997-98 George & Leo
1998-99 The King of Queens
1999-00 Strangers with Candy
2000-01 Cursed / The Weber Show (That's Right!)
2001-02 The Tick
2002-03 Andy Richter Controls the Universe
2003-04 Arrested Development
2004-05 Joey

Not all of my picks were long lasting or popular. But they all made me laugh. And that's the important thing.

I mean, the list looses all credibility, not the person themselves.

And I didn't say liking shows more than AD looses all credibility -- it's just prefering H&F over AD does.

And yes, judging by this thread, you've wasted 3 posts complaining, I would say you care.
In my book.

I'm not complaining, I'm stating a point and that's two different things.

And can I ask you why liking H&F more than AD is such a hostile thing to you?

because if AD fails then all hope in humanity is gone.

Well let me rephrase. Why is it so incredible to you? It's his opinion and I think that if a person can't express their own opinions without it being deemed incredbile, there's a problem.

It was only suppossed to be a joke, it has gotten blown completely out of proportion.

IMO, Hope & Faith is as dumb as a show can get.
Whereas Arrested Development is one of the smartest.

I could think of 101... :joke: ;)

Anyway, liking one show over another has nothing to do with credibility. It's just whatever makes that person happy to be watching. Basically I'm agreeing with JT.

Aha see there it is.

In YOUR opinion!

And BTW, jokes and sarcasm get verrrry old verrrry fast...just a tip...

I don't get why barwars is getting jumped on, but yet others were accused of doing the same thing to the original poster ohno:

Indeed. Especially considering the fact that it was fairly obvious that barwars was a) joking and b) stating an opinion.

Getting back to the topic at hand, there are several things in the many lists of Sal that I do not agree with. I think M*A*S*H was never overrated and I think Scrubs and Malcolm in the Middle have great themesongs.

And, if I am not mistaken, I thought John Travolta left Welcome Back, Kotter as a regular in Season Four, not Season Two.

As does bitching and complaining about them.

I Enjoy Both. They're Both very different sitcoms, And I Appreciate them each for what they are.

Comparing those 2 is like comparing Seinfeld to Laverne & Shirley.

Thank you, I do pride myself on bitching and complaining and I'm glad to hear that I'm doing a good job at it.

Honestly, I don't have anything against you barwars (quite frankly, I thank you for coming to the boards and with some others, rejuvenating them. They were pretty much dead about a year and a half ago). It's just that, sometimes I and maybe some other people too get tired of hearing people make sarcastic remarks about our opinions.

Now, believe me, I'm no prude, absolutely not, but you don't have to be a prude to get pissed off sometimes.

So really, I'm apologizing, but I'm also saying that maybe you shouldn't make jokes with people about their opinions all the time because maybe they wouldn't see it as a joke...

Looks like some people must have flunked Reading Comprehension in school! I made it very clear off the top that the lists that I wrote down represent my opinions, and I stand by those opinions no matter how outlandish they may seem.

It's fine if you want to disagree---that was part of the point of the exercise---but to question my credibility is going a bit too far. A better alternative would be to admit that you disagree, then tell me why you do. After which, I'll reply and tell you my side, I promise.

Or, if you wish, and you want to start a really good debate, answer this for me:

Which show do you believe will be cancelled first (quality be damned!)? Arrested Development or Hope and Faith?

Now this I can't wait to read....

I don't think either will be cancelled. I see both of them going on for at least a few more years, having a planned finale.

H&F seems to be a success for ABC.

And AD, although not a ratings hit by any means, gives FOX all the awards it needs.
