'Mrs. Doubtfire' sequel in the works
Friday, November 19, 2004 Posted: 3:15 PM EST (2015 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Mrs. Doubtfire isn't finished yet. Eleven years after the Robin Williams drag comedy appeared on the big screen, a sequel to the hit film is in the works at Fox.

Williams is in early talks to reprise his role as Mrs. Doubtfire, and to resume producing duties with his wife, Marsha Williams. Bonnie Hunt also is in talks to pen the project.

In the original, directed by Chris Columbus, Williams played an estranged father who poses as a Scottish nanny, Euphegenia Doubtfire, in order to get access to his children and successfully bypass his ex-wife (Sally Field). The film grossed $219 million domestically.

The film garnered two Golden Globes in 1994, one for best picture (comedy/musical) and one for Williams as best actor in a comedy/musical. The film also won an Oscar for best makeup for Williams' elaborate transformation into a frumpy, bespectacled older woman.

Williams' recent credits include David Duchovny's "House of D" and Christopher Nolan's "Insomnia." The Oscar-winning actor has just been announced to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the Golden Globes on January 16.

It wouldn't work. The kids are way too grown up now.

The first is one of my favorite films of all time (I've never met anyone who doesn't like it).... but I doubt this will be any good.

It's true. There are no new ideas in Hollywood. They have to make a sequel out of everything

Don't worry, I'm sure they'll have "Sound of Music 2" and "Doctor Zhivago 2" come out soon.

Mrs. Doubtfire blows

actually, I havnt seen it when I was little, but I hated it then...and the other people my age liked it, and I like comedies less than I did then.

For one, sequals ruin all thought put into the purpose of the movie. And another, entertainment isn't just entertainment...it's like an art. Making sequals basically destroys it, like, if it were a picture, it'd be ripping it in half. I don't...like that. There's no guarantee it'll be awful, it'll probably be pretty good actually...but like I said before...

I say give it a chance before we say it's no good ;) It might surprise us and actually be good :)

What's he gonna do? Babysit his 20 year-old kids? ;)

Who knows, it might be decent. I liked the first.

 Yeah, right. "Kids, your father's coming over to look after you while I'm gone." "But, we're too old for a babysitter." :D

I predict that the film will be a flop. But, that's just my opinion.

It will probably have kind of a different plot I'm sure, maybe it will be his grandkids? ;)

This sounds like one of the most pointless sequels ever. I didn't think Robin Williams would even consider (and if he does pass on it, they'll just redo the original- with a different guy- sort of like Dirty Dancing 2). First, why would the character need to dress up to fool his family again? They already know he did it before- and he's on good terms with his kids. As for his grandkids, the only reason for doing that would be if he fell out with his kids, and even then he'd have to dress as a completely different woman.

It'll probably be a typical cookie cutter sequel. something stupid like Mrs Doubtfire recruited by the CIA or he meets a woman that looks exactly like Doubtfire and the whole 'Prince and the Pauper' thing happens. I've seen so many sequels like that- and a few sequels with the same story as 'Santa Klaus 2'- where he has to get married or else.

I think what would be funnier is getting Sally Field dressing as a man for some reason (possibly to get a great job but the boss is sexist, or something else, I dunno). Sally Field as a man would be hilarious.

What's with all these sequels? That show will sink without 1) Robin Williams, 2) Sally Field and 3) the adorable Mara Wilson....I loved the first one...big fave!

Unless they come up with a very good plot (something none of us have done yet).... I don't think it will be any good.

But sequels aren't always a bad thing.

Wayne's World 2 was great, not as good as the first, but a great film on its own right.

A Very Brady Sequel was better than the original.

I agree, I say give it a chance before we condemn it. Santa Clause 2 wasn't as good as the original, but it still was good IMO

Same with Spider Man 2, it was probably the only sequel in history that outdid the original

Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban

Not all sequels are bad - if they have something original to say. But waiting ten years and then just throwing a sequel together to make a quick buck is wrong.

I was going to bring those two up, but since all three LOTR movies were filmed within one gigantic one-year marathon session, I didn't think they counted.

I know the writers for Scream 2 disagree with me, but I think ALIENS outdid ALIEN in every way possible. Alien was a great movie, but Aliens was so much more.

I also thought T2 was better than Terminator. Legally Blond 2 was also better than the first IMO.

Nope, I completely agree.

I'm really curious to know how they're going to do a sequel to Mrs. Doubtfire! I loved the original.

Another sequal I think is better than the original is Toy Story 2.

I didn't like Toy Story 2. I also hated Shrek 2, the writers were obviously drunk when they were writing that
