View Full Version : What was the big surprise on the AMA's?
Jrnygrl 11-14-2004, 11:50 PM Has anyone from the East coast seen the show yet?
What was the surprise that Dick Clark talked about, that would set everyone buzzing on Monday morning?:talk: :talk: :help2 :gossip
vashti1999 11-15-2004, 12:19 AM I heard Dick Clark on the Howard Stern show talking about that. He mentioned it would have something to do with the Twista/Kanye West performance. I don't remember if he already mentioned Jamie Foxx as well, but I can't imagine that would be the big thing. I was assuming it might be Luther Vandross since they sample one of his songs in the song "Slow Jams" but I really don't know what the big surprise was. I just caught a bit of it anyway. I recorded it, I haven't seen the entire show yet. It wasn't a priority for me since Prince didn't show up, since he got whupped by MissZero's boy.
Jrnygrl 11-15-2004, 12:35 AM Thanks Vashti!
I heard Dick Clark on with Howard too, but he wouldn't say anything other than it was a surprise.
Can't believe Prince lost. I guess today's music listeners don't appreciate real talent. Like last year when Michael McDonald lost to Justin Timberlake.ohno: ohno: :censored:

I expected it actually. Usher has had a big year, and if these awards are voted on by the public, I figured they'd pick Usher over Prince. It didn't really surprise me. I'll just hope for a better outcome for my guy at the Grammys.

You know her song, "I Try"? She goes, "I try to say goodbye but I choke." It's really "I try to not stay high but I toke."

Dean Winchester 11-15-2004, 03:13 AM nothing against him, but Jamie Foxx was hardly what I (or anyone else I talked to) was expecting. The way they kept hyping this surprise appearence by a huge superstar, I was thinking someone along the lines of Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Garth Brooks (in the country world, he is a definate superstar), or even a younger superstar like Justin Timberlake or Eminem. I like Foxx, but I wouldn't quite call him a superstar.

So it was Jaime Foxx? That's the surprise, Jaime Foxx!
Either Dick is getting old or I don't know what a surprise superstar is.
Thanks Buffy!

I know Jamie is quite popular these days, especially because of Ray, but the way they were hyping this huge unannounced superstar, I think most people were expecting someone a lot bigger.

Damn Straight! LOL, just playing....I like Prince too. I'm really glad Usher swept the awards, it's really been a huge year for him and that makes me really happy :D . The performances were off the hook especially: My Boo (so kickass), Karma (also kickass), Slow Jamz (didn't Jamie could really sing), What a Wonderful World (loved it), etc. Jimmy Kimmel was hysterical I was rollin. Anna Nicole Smith was drunk as hell I almost died (especially during the pre-show  ). Fantasia's performance made me wanna kill my TV, t was horrible. I wonder though, how long will it be before Ush and Alicia admit that they're goin out? I mean for real did anyone else watch and think that they are? I think they are cute together :)
dlemond 11-15-2004, 04:29 PM Biggest surprise?
That anyone watched a crapfest like that.
There are no music awards that mean a thing.

I have to agree with you. I only watched because someone on another chat site asked who the surprise guest was.
I guess because I'm older now, these shows seem so boring.
But I'm glad I got to see Kobe Bryant booed. That was great. Missed Anna Nicole. Macy Gray, I still cannot get over that moment. And the lady from Desperate House Wives in the low cut dress looked like a man. I was completely embarrased for Fantasia, if that is her best, she will not be around for long.
Glad I got to see the Beatles video. Wish I could turn back time.
I do think that the Grammy's should get Kimmel to host, he was funny.
All in all, I really don't pay any attention to the award shows anymore. This was the first time in a long time that I have watched.
Dr. Jazz 11-15-2004, 05:09 PM I didn't watch the show, but I heard that after a rare clip of a Beatles performance (which Ringo Starr introduced) Jimmy Kimmel said "Boring" & the crowd booed him. I can't believe he would be dumb enough to call the Beatles boring AND say it on TV in front of millions of people. I was never a huge Beatles fan, but I would never call them "boring". Jimmy deserved to get booed for that remark.

Dean Winchester 11-15-2004, 06:38 PM am I the only person who liked Kimmel a lot better before his "metrosexual" makeover?
Janet McFarland 11-15-2004, 07:16 PM I saw the AMAs last night! Woot woot.. Alicia Keys' 'Karma' performance was awesome.. same with the 'My Boo' performance with Usher! OMG THEY ARE SOOOOO CUTE TOGETHER!!! :D Ok haha um.. of course Usher won alot of awards and so did Outkast which got boring after the 2nd award.. I didn't see all the performances so I can't comment on those.. Anna Nicole Smith freaked me out with her 'Do you like my body?' and when Fantasia came on to perform I changed the channel..

I'm not a big Kimmel fan, but I think he did a decent job last night, except for the Beatle comment and the guy with his shirt off.

the Kimmel of today and the Kimmel from Comedy Central are worlds apart it seems. I liked him better before ABC got ahold of him and "made him over", mostly in attire and they've made him lose weight.
vashti1999 11-15-2004, 08:54 PM Let me first say I love Dick Clark. He's an institution, he's been around everyone in the music business, etc. I think age has caught up with him to promote Jamie Foxx as some big, major surprise. It's clear that's what it was. I just watched it, the Ying Yang Twins introduced the performance by Twista and Kanye West and mentioned a "special surprise". All it was was Jamie Foxx singing and playing piano for a minute before the regular performance started. I think maybe Dick Clark had no clue that Jamie Foxx sang the chorus to "Slow Jams" all along, and when Twista and Kanye mentioned Jamie would be performing with them, Dick Clark probably thought "wow!! that's great, the star of Ray!! People'll be talking about that for days." I mean let's face it, Dick Clark should be listening to Tony Bennett and Rosemary Clooney at this point in his life. Jamie Foxx is not that special.
felicitylen 11-16-2004, 11:52 AM I watched the AMA's and I don't think the big surprise was supposed to have been Jaime Foxx. I think the surprise was Twista because wasn't he almost killed in a car accident? or something like that happened. At least I hope the surprise wasn't Jaime Foxx.
I think Jimmey Kimmel did a good job as a host. I was laughing when he said "boring!" after the clip of the Beatles. Everyone booed him, that was funny.
Did anyone notice how Kobe Bryant got booed. At first I wasn't for sure because it was half booes and half cheering. But he was for sure booed. That was funny.

That had to be one of the best moments of the show. And just before Kobe came out Kimmel read a fake letter from Shaq.

I doubt that Dick Clark would have gone on the Howard Stern show pumping up a "special surprise performance that people will be talking about the day after" for it to be Twista.
felicitylen 11-17-2004, 11:52 AM So Jaime Foxx was really the surprised? Then they could have saved the hype and the whole performance.
