View Full Version : Why are the Three's Company DVD sets filled with so many problems?
TVFactFan 11-12-2004, 12:10 PM I haven'ty bought season 3 yet but when i bought season 2, there were several times the scene freezes and skips which can really take the enjoyment out of watching your favorite show. Now i have heard someone mention that there are several times on the season 3 DVD when there are frozen scenes and lots of skipping. What is the problem with the three's company dvd's? I so hesitant to buy season 3 because of this problem.
Terri Cardellini 11-12-2004, 12:16 PM I didn't have any trouble with either one:confused:
vashti1999 11-12-2004, 12:21 PM I haven't had any problems either.
I Love John Ritter 11-12-2004, 04:02 PM I haven't had any problems with the first or the second, but the thrid one, I have. On the episodes "Good Old Reliable Janet" and on "The Older Woman", there are some very noticable yellow lines. However, I think this problem is on everyones DVDs.

Buy another dvd player because ONE show doesn't play right?
Sean Snow 11-12-2004, 06:54 PM I haven't had problems with any of the seasons, although when I bought season one from Best Buy their entire supply seemed to have things wrong with them. However, aside from that, they play fine on my player.
By the way, the faint yellow lines seen in some of the season three episodes are also in the Nick @ Nite versions. The masters that the remastered episodes were transferred from must've been damaged at some point or something along those lines.

I'm not sure which episodes it can be seen in. There was a topic about it around two years ago, and someone said that it probably had to do with the way the episodes were stored. They're very faint and not all that noticeable. The main times you can spot them is when a scene is taking place in the apartment.
Terri Cardellini 11-12-2004, 09:41 PM i didn't notice any lines, or maybe i just ignored them and didn't notice that i was doing that.

One show? You mentioned in another thread about having problems with another set giving you problems. It's your DVD player ;)

Yes, I noticed that too. I have every single episode taped (Including "The Charming Stranger") and I have noticed that on a few episodes as well. You're probably right. It's probably from when the episodes were transferred.
BillyK 01-06-2005, 04:37 PM I think the reason why the yellow lines are so noticable in a couple of episodes of Season 3 is due to the tranfer from analog to digital (or DVD).
Because of the high quality picture (supposedly) the viewer can see more of the nuances (sp?) of the original/master videotape - or videotape used.

I finally started getting me the Three's Company DVD's and while the first season was perfect, I had a problem with season 2. The episode Stanley Casanova had quite a few freeze spots in it. I haven't watched the dvd since. I'll start doing so again this weekend. I just hope their aren't anymore problems.
BillyK 01-10-2005, 04:14 PM I haven't had any problems with the Season By Season DVDs of Three's Company yet.
Of course, we haven't gotten the other seasons yet.

Well you must have a $500 DVD Player like Pavanbadal-lol

I don't have a $500 DVD player, and I haven't found any problems. The only problem I found was the yellow lines in the screen, but from what I've heard, it's on everyone's discs.
Austin Tripper 01-11-2005, 07:14 PM I have been lucky, I haven't had a problem :)

The thing is, there are a variety of DVD players out there, and some sell for about $40 (the cheapest I've seen) and some sell for a lot more. I know everyone prefers the bargain, but clearly one gets what one pays for. The Three's Company DVDs that I purchased I tried watching while at work (I worked for a group home at the time, and they had a very cheap $40 DVD player) and let me tell ya, I couldn't even get past the opening DVD introductions (the only reason I even considered watching them while at work is because I couldn't contain my enthusiasm; I wanted to see these episodes badly!!!). I thought the DVDs were defective. I then got home and tried it on my own player (that I paid almost $200+ for) and they worked fine.
I didn't consider the price difference at all; a friend suggested that the one at the group home may have been dirty and that's why they didn't work. But as it turns out, after purchasing a few lense cleaners for the machine, other DVDs didn't work on that player either, like the recent Hulk movie, the latest season set of Friends, and a bunch of others. So it has little to do with how old the show is or how the company manufactures them.
The DVD format is constantly revived, especially in ways that make the manufacturing cheaper. It's the same way with CDs. I have an expensive Sony 5 disc player (that I bought over 7 years ago!) that will NOT play custom made CDs, but the cheap $25 portable player that I purchased not even a year ago does play them. Sometimes it has to do with the quality of the player or how old it is, much like computers.
If you scrimped a bit on your DVD player, or if it's over 3 or 4 years old, chances are the player is limited on what it can read due to its cheap quality (hey, you think a $40 DVD player is going to compete with one that $150+???) or it's merely too old.
It's frustrating as all heck but such is life. Either way, the point is, I blamed the Three's Company DVDs at first, thinking they were defective, and it turns out they weren't. I'd bet it's the same with yours...

MelissaY1 01-20-2005, 05:32 PM Edster,
I agree, you get what you pay for when it comes to DVDs, but I have noticed there are some serious flaws with these Three Company discs. I've bought all 3 seasons so far on-line and TWICE had to return defective discs to the on-line retailer I purchased them from. Keep in mind the defects had nothing to do with the place I bought them from. They're a reputable business and I've bought many other discs from them with no problem. This is a manufacturing issue. On both the second AND 3rd season I had problems with the 3rd disc in the sets. They start to skip, freeze, then the picture goes off and it skips back to the main menu. I have a top of the line Pioneer player so you can imagine how frustrating this has been. I think Anchor Bay needs to be more careful with how they're manufacturing these things in the future. It's a shame too because the sets are great otherwise. I love the extras, etc.

JRfan 01-20-2005, 05:40 PM My Season 3 dvd skips a lot on "Good Old Reliable Janet". but all the other episodes on that disk and my other seasons work fine
