View Full Version : Is giving your kid hot sauce as a punishment abuse?
TheHappyBurgerMeister 11-10-2004, 11:59 PM There was just a mother on the news who has 2 boys ages 5 and 8. She says that when they are naughty she gives them tobasco sauce. I personally don't like that, but I'm not sure how it would affect them or if it works. A Dr. on the news segment says it's a form of "Borderline Abuse". So, what do you think?
Of course it's abuse. That's a horrible thing to do to your kid.

Frankly that's the most assinine form of punishment I've ever heard of. Hot sauce as a punishment? I don't think it's abuse but I still think that mother has some issues.
Don't back-talk kids, or I'll break out the pepper!
Dutabi84 11-11-2004, 12:03 AM Punishment? Yes, abuse.
Warm & Fuzzy 11-11-2004, 12:06 AM I personally don't think it's abuse. I see it as an effective and clever punishment. Actress, Lisa Whelchel uses this method, too, with her kids. I speak from experience, of course. When I was younger, my parents soaked my thumb in tobasco sauce, and I never sucked my thumb ever since then. They've helped me break a long, hard habit in just a few minute's worth time. Big props.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 11-11-2004, 12:24 AM They actually did mention Lisa Welchel on the news segment talking about it.

Well... Lisa Whelchel is a borderline psycho when it comes to parenting her kids. The woman is nuts.
As for your situation, I don't think that's punishment, Jenny. Your parents wanted to break you of a habit that could cause future teeth problems, and if that's the only way to get you to do it, well so be it.
As for a punishment, I believe it's a comlpetely asinine thing to do. There's something called 'time-out'. There's something called 'no desert for a week'. There are many, many other alternatives to literally smoking your young one's tongue off.
MaryElizabeth 11-11-2004, 12:32 AM Personally, I think it's warped, twisted abuse.
Janice 11-11-2004, 12:34 AM Tobasco sauce, taken alone, can take anyone's breath away, especially in the tiny throats of children. It most certainly is child abuse.
Brent88 11-11-2004, 12:37 AM Yes...
Hollow 11-11-2004, 01:39 AM it shouldn't be against the law. it's just a damn flavor. but parents shouldnt do that.
How is Lisa Whelchel a borderline psycho?
Rhiannon 11-11-2004, 09:53 AM I used to suck my thumb when I was little and the dentist told my parents it was a bad habit I needed to break (I saw this later on...) and so they would put tobasco on my thumb when I went to sleep.
Pitooey 11-11-2004, 09:57 AM My daughter loves eating hot sauce and she's 7 years old. One day I passed by the table and looked at her plate she had emptied alot of it on her food. Then she looks up at me and said.... "Mom it's too hot" I said... "that's what you get for pouring it yourself"........ since that day I sprinkle a little bit in her food.

Okay, really nice woman. Couldn't possibly be any nicer. But she takes parenting to a real extreme. I mean, her kids are almost amish for Christ's sake. I read her book "Creative Correction" and was appalled at some of the things she does to her kids. Like if her kid slams their door, she takes the door off the hinges. So that may be a literal punishment, but their are other alternatives to dismantling your whole house, y'know? Kids, no matter what age, need their privacy in their rooms.
MissZero 11-11-2004, 10:26 AM I don't think giving a kid a little tobasco as punishment will hurt them...at most it will help them learn their lesson and take a nice **** later on.

To the mothers who do crap like that:
Those kids won't forget. It's only a matter of a few years from now, Mom. Your kids won't be your helpless little playtoys all of their lives, so you'd better start watching your back.:angryfire

¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 11-11-2004, 06:01 PM It seems as if people get so.. PI now when it comes to parenting. Now giving spankings has become abuse, when back in the day it was pretty much the norm.
I myself wouldnt put tobasco sauce on my kids tongue, but honestly.. there are some kids out there who could use it -.-
Whatever happened to soap? Or has that become 'wrong' too?
And time-out is crap. Half the time the kid wont even sit still or shutup. I think parents should raise their kid strict, and then slowly back off just to let them know that they mean business instead of spoiling them from day one. Otherwise theyll never learn.
G-Force Glockstar 11-11-2004, 06:09 PM It's not really abusing, but it sure is mean!

Word.
Wat other crap is considered abuse? making your kids drink this (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72285)? Now THAT is just WRONG. NO kid deserves the abuse of tasting something so gross. Any parent who does that needs to be sent to prison for at least 10 years.

If so, why is it that you seem to assume that any other type or method of child rearing beyond the typical spanking and whacking style is, in your view, labeled PC? I never spanked my kids., and I never gave PC a thought. Being PC never entered into my thinking. What I did know was that part of my upbinging included spankings, or worse. I hated that and I never thought that it did me one bit of good, ever. I spared my two kids that nonesense, and they aren't brats.

Now, if you do it parents are getting arrested, having their kids taken away, etc. I mean its a spanking. Theres a big difference between a pat on the ass and beating.

There are some over zealous authorities, and some rules of society gone awry, I'll grant you that. I don't know about the 'pat on the ass' thing though. That wasn't the kind of spanking I was referring to. My point though was that it is perfectly possible to raise children sans spanking. Making that conscience decision to do so does not automatically fall into the category of so called PC parenting.
KayCee 11-11-2004, 06:51 PM It's definitely not punishment. Tabasco sauce isn't all that hot. Personally, I like it on certain foods.

I agree, I mean when I was younger, in my family, they would literally wash our mouths out with soap if we said bad words, we stopped saying them very quickly. It was mostly just a smidge of dishsoap on our tongues.
My cousins' cousin, uses those hot pepper flakes like you'd sprinkle on your pizza at Pizza Hut, but he only does it when his kids cuss, and he hasn't done it in a long time, cause his kids learned to not say those bad words anymore.
I certainly don't condone this though

MissZero 11-11-2004, 08:32 PM Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (AP) - A 39 year old woman was charged today with child abuse after allegedly forcing her 6 year old son to eat his celery. "This is serious child abuse and action must be taken against this insane woman!" said Marcia Kohen, the head of Child Services in Philadelphia. She then added, "No child should be forced to eat celery." If convicted the woman faces up to 10 years in prison.

Now THAT is one sick bitch. Making your own child eat yucky vegetables! She just couldn't do the right thing and buy him a box of fruit roll-ups, could she? That child is going to grow up to be very messed up in the head. It had to happen to him at such a young age. :( I wish sick people like her would just die. 10 years is not NEARLY long enough. She deserves life in prison!

ABlairican Pie 11-12-2004, 02:15 AM I think Lisa has to do a complete re-inventing of her image to shake off the scandal of the hot sauce controversy. She has a LOT of work ahead of her. She needs to re-examine her beliefs to recognize that being extremist in her practices is turning off people to her Christianity. God is NOT about severity and punishment. She may explain that she has been greatly misunderstood, but that won't change a lot of peoples' minds, unfortunately.
She could have just used tainted meat loaf as punishment.

That's all it is - making them eat something they don't like. most people don't like hot sauce by itself, and that's the only reason it's used as a punishment...because of its unpleasant taste. it's NOT harmful. It's just the flavor. misszero's fake news article proved this point perfectly. if making someone eat hot sauce is abuse, why isn't making them eat celery? if they don't like hot sauce, and they don't like celery, what's the difference? what if they like hot sauce, but not celery? would the celery be abuse then? i'm eating hot cheetos right now, am i being self destructive?
EmoJoe 11-12-2004, 05:19 PM Kind of. I mean a little bit wont hurt..but a huge gob of it will.

The "punishment" isn't about the taste of hot sauce. If it were, then the parenting Lisa's and the like might just as well have punished their kids with celery or something. The point is that HOT Sauce is HOT! It HURTS! it BURNS! It makes little kids scream bloody murder!

But you should find healthy foods they like.
I for one, cannot stomach a variety of types of food, and my parents realized that when I was younger, thankfully.
