View Full Version : Fred was sort of a hypocrite because he constantly called Esther ugly but
TVFactFan 11-05-2004, 04:45 PM went out on a date with CRAZY ALICE, who was very ugly, then he was attracted to a female impersonator who was unattactive as soon as the character walked in the door. I didn;t know it was a man but i did say it was ugly woman-lol And to top if off, Fred was slow dancing with a Tall Overweight woman who was over 6ft tall and looked like she weighed 300pounds. So I think Fred has some nerve cracking on Esther the way he did.
glenny 11-05-2004, 08:17 PM Fred was no prize himself. Why would Donna a professional educated practical nurse (whatever practical means) be attracted
to Fred a lowly and much older junk dealer who did'nt have a pot to pee in. Esther was not the most beautiful of women either, she did have a face that could stop a clock.

Probably because even though Fred wasn't that much of a looker or didn't have much, he was very confident about what he had and how he looked. And another thing, he never thought he looked old.
Lady T 11-05-2004, 08:27 PM I agree on this, I could never understand why Fred was so harsh and callous towards Esther, when he was very far from being attractive himself?
It was like the old saying calling the Kettle Black, when Fred would call Esther names of being ugly...
glenny 11-05-2004, 08:37 PM Like in the episode "Fred the Activist", Fred was so rude to those ladies from the Silver Foxes. He was acting like he was so young compared to them.
Lady: "Fred....you can take me anywhere."
Fred: "How about out to pasture"

Fred: "How about out to pasture" But then again, Fred was pretty much rude towards everyone; not only was he rude to women that were his own age, but he was a narrow minded bigot too.
glenny 11-05-2004, 08:46 PM That is very true, but the conversation he was trying to have with Julio's mother in his living room was priceless.
Mrs. Fuentes: "We come by airplane....we leave NY and boom boom boom...we are hear in 5 hours!"
Fred: "Well it's even faster going back ...you get on the plane
and boom boom..you are back home in 4 hours."

glenny 11-05-2004, 09:02 PM He was so nasty to Mrs. Hopkins and she was a paying tenant. He should have kissed her feet for playing him money to live in that dumpy Sanford Arms.
****************************************************
Hoppy: "Did i ever tell you mom was a store dectective at Robertson's Department store?
Mrs. Hopkins: "Yes...i was in charge of the entire lingerie department...and i must say in 30 years nobody ever ripped off one of my bras!"
Fred: "I can believe that!"

I agree, Fred did not realize at times, that he could be gracious to certain people and not vice versa; and I think Fred made no bones that he was not attracted to white women, I noticed in a past episodes he made a hinted referrence to that...
glenny 11-05-2004, 09:36 PM Yeah! Fred was very rude to Mary the housekeeper Lamont hired when Fred was injured. He called her a "old ugly white woman." He was also mercliess to Fritzi Burr. She played many different characters. A nurse, a double agent in Sgt. gork, Mrs. Channing the committee woman and many others.

Fritizi Burr was not a bad looking woman; she was definitely more attractive than Redd Foxx:lol:
glenny 11-05-2004, 09:42 PM It was funny though as fawned all over Della Reese. She was no prize herself. She was actually rude to Fred. Saying that he should put is mouth in cement cause his singing was so bad.

W.J. Griffin 11-07-2004, 03:12 AM "...But UGLY is to the BONE!!"
I think that saying applies here as well, in reference to Fred's treatment of Esther.
Astute observers will no doubt note that there has NEVER been any love lost between Fred Sanford and any of his late wife's relatives (niece Elizabeth being the lone exception), and, indeed, most of the fights between Fred and his in-laws are usually instigated by said in-laws, Esther usually being the ringleader in these exercises (for that matter, Fred's OWN relatives were also very hard to get along with, as witnessed in "Here Comes The Bride, There Goes The Groom").
But one also has to note that, as time wore on, the insults between Fred and Esther became more of a game, with Fred trying to top himself with the funniest "ugly" caps (calling Esther a "gorrilla-faced uglymopotomas" and a "fat-back, monkey-face gorilla" in "The Surprise Party" ranks as two of the funniest), and Esther, for her part, is one of the few people on the series who can hold her own against him (calling him a 'frog-eyed, fish-eatin' fool" in the same episode listed above). One suspects that, over time, the two had developed a grudging respect for each other's ability to dish it out AND take it, too, a trait that seems to be particular to Black sitcoms only (witness JJ and Thelma's verbal jousting on "Good Times", George Jefferson and Florence's championship bouts on "The Jeffersons'', even Martin Payne and Pam James' back 'n' forths on "Martin", among others...)
With the other characters Fred insults on a regular basis, however, it is due to his bigotry, sexism, and general, all-around crotchedyness...the show wouldn't have been funny otherwise.
FredFan55 11-08-2004, 10:18 AM Hopefully the LPNs (Licensed Practictal Nurses) of the world won't beat me up on this, but to the best of my knowledge, an LPN is a nurse with somewhat less academic training than an RN (Registered Nurse). I think LPNs typically have two year college degrees while many RNs have a BSN (Batchelor of Science in Nursing) a four year degree.
Either way, to say Donna was Fred's intellectual superior is the understatement of the series.

GARFIELDKOOL 11-08-2004, 03:33 PM Remember those fat ladies at the end of the party crashers episode? I thought he made fun of fat women.
