Here's a new fic! This is about the season 4 finale.
--------------------------------------------------------

All of Jinny’s family and friends and everyone from The Division were gathered around her and Hank, her brand-new husband. It had been a beautiful wedding and now the reception was wrapping up. Everyone had had a wonderful time, eating, laughing, sharing, and dancing. Even Nate had to admit that he’d had some fun. It had been extremely hard for him for the last year and a half. It seemed as though joy had left his life, and would never return. He had gone through many stages of grief since that day that he came home and found The Note: the note that symbolized the end of his world, the end of his life as he knew it, and haunted him ever since. He had first denied that CD would do that to him. The CD that he knew and loved would never have done that to anyone, let alone him, her lover and best friend. Then he freaked out at the thought that she was gone, and went on a search to find her, but was unable to track her down. She had left no leads, she being just as smart as he was. After Nate finally came to grips that the love of his life was gone and wasn’t coming back, he became angry. So angry, that it was a constant, daily struggle to not fume it out onto his friends and coworkers. Eventually, his anger passed, and depression set in. He hadn’t realized that it was depression, but it was. He found himself with so little faith in himself that he had an affair with a woman who wouldn’t and couldn’t ever love him. Only when he ended that mistake, did he admit to himself that he was still desperately in love with CD, and still felt tremendous pain for her. Every morning, he awoke, hoping that it had all been just a nightmare; and every morning, he was disappointed.

It had been a huge adjustment for Nate to get used to having a new partner, Raina. He liked Raina, and thought that she was a good cop, but she wasn’t CD. No one could compare to CD. He hadn’t wanted another female partner. He just couldn’t handle that again. However, he did get used to Raina, and didn’t mind her as a partner. In fact, she had been the only one who really cared about him and CD, and how he was handling his recovery.

The toasts of the wedding brought Nate back to focus on the event. Jinny held out her glass and declared with a big smile, “To the future.”

Nate smiled and clinked his glass with the guest next to him. ‘Well,’ he thought, ‘it’s nice that somebody has a future.’

The guests began to disperse again to mingle and chat. Nate found himself alone. He’d had to get used to that, but he still hated being at a wedding alone. Sure, he’d sat next to Raina and even danced one song with her, but it wasn’t the same. They weren’t dating, nor did they want to. The only other single woman there that he knew was Stacy, and he’d run through a blizzard naked before he’d strike up a conversation with her. A feeling of loneliness washed over him. He thought he’d be able to handle this wedding, but it was starting to get to him. He tried very hard to not think about the fact that he should have had this with CD by now, but it still occasionally crept across his mind. He didn’t want to just leave, so he went over to Raina. “Hey,” he said.

Raina was talking to John Exstead, and turned around to face Nate with a smile. “Hey!” she replied. “You want to dance?”

Nate shook his head and jingled his keys in his pocket. “Ah, no. I’m getting kind of tired, so I think I’m going to call it a night.”

“Oh, OK,” she replied. “Are you OK?” she asked, showing the expression that she gave when she knew what was bothering him.

Nate brushed it off. “Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Just a long day. I’ll see you Monday?”

“Yeah, see you Monday.” She have his arm a little squeeze, and then Nate turned around and left.

Nate got into his car and turned on the radio. Nothing spectacular, but at least it broke the silence of being alone. Then another song began to play.
~
A hundred days had made me older
Since the last time that I've saw your pretty face

A thousand lights had made me colder and I don’t think I can look at this the same

But all the miles had separate
They disappear now when I’m dreaming of your face.
~

After a few lines, it had Nate’s attention.

~
I’m here without you baby
But you’re still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby
And I dream about you all the time
I’m here without you baby
But you’re still with me in my dreams
And tonight it’s only you and me

The miles just keep rollin
As the people either way to say hello
I've heard this life is overrated
But I hope that it gets better as we go
~

He finally let himself think about the obvious. It was as though the song had been written for him. A tear sprang to the corner of his eye. He wiped it away, but more proceeded to follow. Part of him wanted to turn it off, but the other needed to listen to the song. It was almost a kind of therapy for him.

~
I’m here without you baby
But you’re still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby
And I dream about you all the time
I’m here without you baby
But you’re still with me in my dreams
And tonight girl it’s only you and me

Everything I know,
And anywhere I go
It gets hard but it won’t take away my love
And when the last one falls,
When it’s all said and done
It get hard but it won’t take away my love

I’m here without you baby
But you’re still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby
And I dream about you all the time
I’m here without you baby
But you’re still with me in my dreams
And tonight girl it’s only you and me.
~

A while later, Nate made it home. He let himself into his dark apartment, and stumbled to turn on the lights. As he laid his keys down on the entry table, he heard the beep of the answering machine. Nate sighed at that. ‘Now who would call me tonight? Everyone I know was at the wedding,’ he thought. Nate hit the “play” button on the machine and slipped out of his jacket.

The voice played. “Nate. It’s CD.”

Dang, only one reply? Yeah yeah, I know that Lisa and Angie read it too....oh well.....here's more.

“Nate. It’s CD.”

Nate's face went white as a sheet. The mail that he held in his hand slipped from his limp fingers and fell to the floor. A warm sensation crawled up his back and his heart began to beat faster. His hands and forehead broke out in a sweat, and he stood, frozen, listening to the message.

The message continued. "Listen, please, before you shut this off, please listen. I know that I am probably the last person you want to hear from right now and you want to pitch this machine out the window.....but I just really, really need to talk to you. I know how much I must have hurt you. I know how much of a bitch I was. It was inexcusable. But if you could find it in your heart.......just please, please, call me back, Nate. Please. My number is 555-7398. This is really important. OK, well.....have a nice night."

Nate still was frozen in his tracks. Then he heard the beep signaling the end of the message. "CD!!!!!" he yelled and ran towards the machine again to replay it. He hit the button and listened to it again. He must have listened to it ten times. Then Nate picked up his phone and stared at it in his hand. He sunk wearily into his recliner, his eyes still glued to the phone. He didn't know what to do. He couldn't act like nothing had happened. SHE had called him, finally, after all this time. This was something he had only ever dreamed about. It was all so unbelievable. He was broken man. He had been since the day CD walked out the door. This was the opportunity he had been wishing, praying, dreaming, and hoping for, but now that it had finally come, he didn't know what to do about it.

Nate stood up and walked down the hallway and into his bedroom. He stood at the doorway and studied the scope of the room. He was still using the sheets and comforter that he and CD had picked out together. It had been too painful to remove them. As he gazed at the room, his heart felt heavy. So many happy memories were born there. Unfortunately, memories of sleepless nights and tears and slutty bimbos filled the room as well. Nate went to the closet and pulled a box out of the back of it. He had sealed it up many months before, not expecting to ever look at its contents again. But now it felt the time was right to do through the contents again. Nate sat down on the bed with the box and opened it. On top was The Note. It was rumpled with Nate's dried tears. Nate read that again, and carefully laid it down beside him. Then he pulled out a card that CD had given him upon her recovery from her bullet wound. In it, she promised that she would never change her mind about them. A lump formed in Nate's throat and he placed that beside him as well. Then Nate pulled out a stack of photographs of her, and them together. The next memento was a napkin from the little Italian place on Polk, where they had finally had their first "date" after CD was released from the hospital. The last in the box was CD's name plate from her desk at the Divison. Kate had given it to Nate as the only way she could think of to help him.

Nate picked up the first two items again: The Note and the card about never changing her mind. He read them both once more, and then stared at the phone. He found his hand reaching for it and picked it up.

Nate and CD having more chemistry together soon i hope! Yay good post..more please! CD's reason will probably be because she was scared of when she got shot and that was the day she finally realized that she was in love with Nate. Then she had 2nd thoughts about how risky it would be with a cop relationship. She thought she could never turn back after she was gunned down by Liz Rue and be herself on the job again..or maybe she had a shock while she was unconcious after she got shot.:talk: :happyface

I'm SO happy!!! :crazy: :D So in honor of that, here's more!
---------------------------------------------------------------

Nate picked up the first two items again: The Note and the card about never changing her mind. He read them both once more, and then stared at the phone. He found his hand reaching for it and picked it up. He dialed. The other end picked up.

"Raina?" Nate said.

"Hey, Nate," Raina replied on her cell phone. She was still at the wedding reception. "What's up?"

"You are not going to believe this," Nate said in disbelief.

"What?"

Nate took a deep breath. "CD called me."

"NO!" Raina shouted into the phone, with a mixture of feelings of shock and happiness.

"I told you you wouldn't believe it."

"What did she say? How did it happen? What did you say?" Raina rattled off in a stream of questions.

"I couldn't say anything. She left a message."

"And?"

"And she said that she was sorry, and she really needed to talk to me, and begged me to call her back."

"Oh my gosh, Nate, that is so AMAZING!!!" Raina exclaimed. Her face was lit up like a Christmas tree.

"So what should I do?" Nate, the typical, clueless guy asked.

"What should you do? WHAT should YOU DO?!" Raina shouted. "CALL HER!"

"But---" Nate began.

"But nothing!" Raina interrupted. "You have been waiting a year and a half for this, and you know it! Now's your chance! Call her back and don't let her get away this time!"

A smiled spread across Nate's face. "OK, I will."

"Good! Now get to it!"

"And Raina?"

"Yeah?"

"Thanks," Nate replied.

"It's my pleasure," Raina responded with a contented smile. She loved love stories, and the real ones were even better.

Nate finally started to dial. His fingers trembled. Of course, this is what he had been thinking of for well over a year. He wanted nothing more than to hold her in his arms forever.....but he didn't know if he could let himself fall for her again. He was afraid that she would only end up hurting him more.

The phone began to ring. Then it picked up. Nate's heart was beating faster and faster. He thought it skipped a beat when he heard the voice of his CD, at long last. "Hello?" she said. Nate didn't know what to say. "Hello?" she repeated again. Nate began to sweat. "Nate?" CD asked.

"Yeah," he replied.

"Nate! You called back!" CD exclaimed happily.

This was all so weird for Nate. He knew in his head that he was talking to CD, but it just didn't seem real. "Yeah, I did. It was....you know, not something that happens everyday, so....."

"Thank you so much, Nate. Listen, before you say anything else, I really feel like we need to talk."

"Oh, ya THINK?!" Nate replied sarcastically.

"I, Nate, I---"

"Because, it seems that you have some communication issues, because you seem to think that a NOTE is sufficient notice for LEAVING your fiance!" Nate shouted. He was surprised at himself. He hadn't expected to react so angrily.

"OK, first of all, we were never technically engaged. And secondly, I know how incomprehensible that was, and I want to apologize for that!"

"CD, you knew damn well that that's where we were headed. We might not have had a ring and a date yet, but we may as well have."

On the other end of the line, in North Beach, a tear slid down CD's cheek. If only Nate knew why she had left.....if only Nate knew what had happened....he'd know that the last 18 months had been even harder on her than it had been on him. She still loved him so much, but it grieved her heart that he probably would never love her again. "Nate.....I am so, so, so sorry. I beg your forgiveness. I didn't mean to hurt you, I swear."

"Bull," Nate replied.

"If only you knew why I did what I did....." She had to swallow the lump in her throat.

"And why would that be, CD?" Nate whispered.

"Because I loved you. Because.....OK, you've got to believe me when I tell you this story. I've never lied to you, right?"

"Yes you have. You told me that you loved me. You told me that you couldn't imagine your life without me. You told me that you wouldn't change your mind. And then....you did."

"No, that isn't what happened!"

"Then what happened, CD?"

"Yes you have. You told me that you loved me. You told me that you couldn't imagine your life without me. You told me that you wouldn't change your mind. And then....you did."

"No, that isn't what happened!"

"Then what happened, CD?"

CD sighed in desperation. She knew this would be hard, but didn't know how hard until now. "I....I can't talk about this over the phone. I need to tell you this in person. I need to see you."

Nate couldn't help but think to himself, 'Yeah, and I need to be married to you right now instead of listening to why you left me,' but he kept those thoughts to himself. He sighed as well. "OK....where do you want to meet?"

CD glanced around her living room. She bit her lip. "Um, I'd invite you here, but I'm living up in North Beach now, and I want to spare you the drive...."

Nate immediately replied, "That's OK." For some reason, all he wanted to do was see her. "I'll come there."

"No, that's OK, Nate, I can meet you downtown."

"It's OK, CD. I haven't been up to North Beach for while.....when?"

"Well, sooner the better, I guess. What's your schedule look like for tomorrow?"

"Um.....it's pretty flexible. I'll just get Raina to take care of it."

"Raina?" CD asked.

"Yeah, she's my partner now."

"Oh," CD replied, deflated. He had another female partner. And if history predicted the future......well, she was deflated. "OK, well, lunch then? About noon?"

"Yeah, that sounds great."

CD then gave him directions, and it was time to say goodbye. "Nate....I just want to say how grateful I am that you're agreeing to talk to me. You have no idea how much this means to me."

"I'm not doing this for you," Nate replied. Even though his spine shivered at the sound of her voice, he must not let his guard down.

CD felt a little pang of hurt at that. But, after all, it was only what she could expect. "Well, I'll see you tomorrow, Nate." She wanted to tell him that she was still desperately in love with him, but she knew better and held it back.

"Yeah....I'll see you tomorrow, CD.....Wow, that's weird."

"What's weird?"

"Saying that I'll see you tomorrow. I haven't said that to you in....um....a year and a half."

CD bit her lip again as another tear dropped off her lashes and rolled down her cheek. She knew exactly how long it had been: one year, six months, a week, and 3 days. She had been keeping track. Little did she know, so had Nate. "Alright, well....goodnight, Nate."

"Goodnight, CD," Nate replied and slowly turned off the phone. Then he looked off into space in a daze. It was a happy daze. What was it about that woman that set his heart to beating so? Why did he still love her so much, after all that she'd done to him? He hated himself for still loving her, but he did. He couldn't help it. She may have left him in reality, but she still remained in his heart.

CD hung up the phone as well. She heard a noise, and walked over to the playpen that was in the corner of her living room. She picked the baby up and cradled him in her arms to soothe his cry. "Shhhh, sweetie," she said in a maternal voice and kissed his head. "It'll be OK. We're going to see Daddy tomorrow."

It had been so hard on CD when she'd found out that she was pregnant, and couldn't share the joy of it with Nate. She hadn't found out that she was pregnant until several weeks after she had left....and as much as she wanted to go back, she knew that for her safety and his, she couldn't. It was almost too much for her to bear, knowing that Nate thought that she had lied to him and left him because she was a bitch who never really loved him. Nothing could be further from the truth. But now....the time had come. It was safe again. The only question was, though: Would he believe her and let her back into his life?

Meanwhile, Nate was stunned. Absolutely stunned. He kept pinching himself, thinking that he was dreaming. Nate rubbed his face with his hands. 'Man, I must have gotten some bad liquor tonight,' he thought. Then he realized that he was still dressed for the wedding. He stripped down to his boxers and wearily went to bed. The sleep wasn't restful, though---it was a night of tossing and turning and dreams about CD. The nervousness about the day before him was overpowering.

The next morning, Nate got up and started to get dressed, but then remembered that it was his weekend off. He didn't have to go to work. It was just as well, because he had overslept and he had to be at North Beach by noon to see CD. His CD. It was all too weird and amazing and nerve-wracking for words. He looked at himself in the mirror. 'Is she even going to recognize me?' he thought. He was glad that he'd already shaved off the beard. But his attention to personal grooming certainly had gone downhill since she left. He hadn't really found that he cared after what happened. He finally put an outfit together, showered, and left.

In the next city over, CD was also nerve-wracked. She got up early to clean up the apartment and make the lunch, and then tackled getting the baby ready. She gave hm a bath, washed his sandy peach-fuzz hair, slathered good-smelling baby lotion on his soft pink skin, and dressed him. He was only nine months old, but already growing up way too fast. As CD got him ready, she cooed and talked baby-talk to him. She loved being a mommy so much....and she was reminded every time she looked at her baby boy of how much he looked like his daddy.

After everything else was ready, CD showered and dressed herself. It didn't take her nearly as long as Nate to decide what to wear---she'd been planning it since the day she left.

Nate pulled up in front of CD's apartment building. A lump formed in his throat. 'This is it,' he thought. He wanted to race up to the door, but his brain told him to cool it. 'You waited 18 months for this, what's another two minutes?' he reasoned. Then he countered with himself, 'You waited 18 months of this, why wait another two minutes?' With that thought, he let himself go and raced up to the door and into the elevator. His heart began to loudly pound. He was a nervous as hell, but also felt on top of the world. He found CD's door, and with a trembling hand, reached to knock on the door, but before he could, it opened.

"Nate," CD said softly. She stood in the doorway, holding the door open. It was her. It was really and truly her.

Nate's breath was swept away. She was even more beautiful than he had remembered, if that was possible. She looked like she had been through a lot....but she looked even more beautiful because of it. "CD," he whispered in a voice that was barely audible. He wanted nothing more than to sweep her up in his arms and kiss her and never let her go, but he refrained.

CD's breath was also swept away. Here, standing before her, was the only man that she'd ever loved.....the only man that had ever loved her. It had been way too long. "Come in," CD said and gestured inside.

Nate stepped in and brushed against her. He felt shivers run up his spine. He stood with his hands in his pockets and looked around the room. CD had put away all the baby things, so Nate didn't see them. She didn't want to have to explain or have him jump to immediate conclusions. "Nice place," Nate commented.

"Thanks," CD replied.

"So what do you do for a living now?"

"Oh, I work for a security company now."

"I see...." he sat down on the sofa.

CD prayed that the baby hadn't left anything between the cushions. "Can I get you anything to drink?" she asked.

"Um, water is fine, thanks," Nate replied.

CD's eyes studied Nate's form. She felt her heart tug at how much he had changed. She knew why he had changed, and it just broke her up inside. His hair was longer....his clothes scruffier...and he had this cold, defensive, wounded aura about him. CD went and got the water and then sat down in the chair opposite him. She took a deep breath. "Nate....I have got so many things to tell you. I know that you have a million questions, and I wouldn't blame you if you hate me. But before I begin, just please know...please know that I never wanted to leave. I never lied to you. I didn't change my mind....and I never stopped loving you."

I didn't change my mind....and I never stopped loving you." CD stared with searching eyes into his. She had no idea what his reaction would be, but she knew that she had to tell him.

Nate's mouth hung open. His eyes grew wide and he stared at her, momentarily speechless. How many times had he dreamt of this? More times than he could count, probably. She looked so irresistibly beautiful and desirable. It took all he had to not immediately pounce on her and make love to her. Nate swallowed hard, then said, "I-I thought that you did change your mind. I thought that you didn't love me anymore. Hell, I thought that you'd never loved me at all....."

"I did love you, Nate. My god, Nate, I still love you." CD raked her fingers through her hair.

Nate shook his head slowly. This was all so....unreal to him. "Then why, WHY did you LEAVE me?" Nate whimpered in a small, pained voice. His face was contorted with the display of pain he felt on the inside.

CD felt a lump form in her throat at his words and actions. She blinked back tears. Nate's eyes were getting red, as well. CD took a deep breath. This was it. "OK.....well, I thought that once I left the hospital and went home with you, everything would be perfect. I loved you, you loved me, we didn't have to worry about Liz Rue anymore, I'd recovered.....it was.....peaceful. But then, about a month after I'd gone home, I got a phone call. I didn't know how to tell you....I couldn't tell you, for your own good."

"What? Did someone better come along and I dropped out of your mind, or what?"

"NO, Nate!" CD groaned. "It was Liz Rue's PARTNER!" she yelled.

"Um, CD? He got killed, remember?"

"Not Tom, Nate. Liz had a partner on the other side, too. After this latest deal, they were supposed to run off to Aculpulco together. Well, of course he found out that I'm the one who shot and killed her, but he had trouble tracking me down for a while. But that's when he finally did."

"Oh my god....." Nate whispered. His face grew pale, and he stared at the floor. He was too ashamed to look at CD. He was ashamed because of what she had to face, what he was supposed to have protected her from, and what he had thought of her all this time.

CD continued. "So he told me that he wanted his demands met, or I would pay, along with everyone I loved." CD dropped her head.

"Demands?" Nate choked out.

"You don't want to know," CD replied. "So the only thing I could do was run. I had to run, get away, not leave any tracks behind."

"Why didn't you tell me? I would have found him and killed him! You know I would have!" Nate replied. A tear rolled down his cheek.

"I couldn't risk it, Nate. I loved you too much. Don't you get it? If I had told anyone, we might have BOTH been killed.....or even worse, one of us killed and the other left behind."

Nate's bottom lip quivered. "I loved you so much, CD."

A tear rolled down CD's cheek, as well. "I know you did. I know you did. I can't imagine what that was like for you.....I still hate myself for having to leave you like I did."

This was all too much for Nate. He buried his face in his hands and his back heaved in sobs. He had failed CD, the one thing that he always swore he would never do. There he had been, imagining all these horrible things about CD, while he'd held bitterness and anger in his heart towards her. There he had been, sleeping with strangers every night while CD had done this all for him......the guilt was overpowering. "Don't hate yourself, CD.....I'm the one who should hate myself," Nate cried into his hands.

CD grabbed a couple of tissues from the end table and sat down next to him on the sofa. She placed one hand on Nate's back, and brought the other, holding the tissues, up to his face and wiped away his tears. Nate took the tissues and dried his nose. "Don't hate yourself, Nate. You have nothing to be sorry for," CD whispered.

"Yes, I do! I let you down! I was supposed to protect you! That's my job!" Nate exclaimed. His tear-stained eyes gazed into hers.

"Nate.....there's no way you could have known."

"It didn't matter! I was your partner! I was going to be your HUSBAND! What kind of man am I?"

"Nate, listen to me! It doesn't make you any less of a man, do you get that? This is not your fault."

Nate gazed at her more. "I am so sorry, CD." A new flood of tears welled up in his eyes.

CD felt such intense feelings rise up within her. This was the most powerfully emotional conversation she had had in her life. She impulsively wrapped her other arm around Nate and hugged him tight.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

CD felt such intense feelings rise up within her. This was the most powerfully emotional conversation she had had in her life. She impulsively wrapped her other arm around Nate and hugged him tight. Nate felt her warm arms embrace him. Her soft flaxen hair brushed against his face. Nate brought his arms up and around her and he gripped her firmly as he buried his face in her hair. This was all too unreal.....too amazingly powerful for words. He felt the past year’s tensions expel themselves as they held onto each other. They both needed this so badly. Neither thought that they had ever loved each other more than they did at this moment, as they cried together. After several minutes, they finally pulled away. They both looked deep into each other’s eyes, with serious faces.

Nate swallowed. “So why are you telling me this now? Aren’t you in danger?”

CD shook her head. “No, I’m not anymore....the guy, Liz’s partner, got killed in another incident last month.” A smiled crept up at the corners of her lips.

Nate stared at her in disbelief, and then a wide grin spread across his face. His eyes lit up. “He did? That’s WONDERFUL! I mean, um, I don’t mean that, um—“

CD interrupted him with a laugh. “That’s OK, Nate. I know what you mean.”

Nate smiled at her. He couldn’t stop looking at her. “Do you realize how much I missed you?” he asked.

“Do you realize how much I missed YOU?” CD replied. “I thought I might never see you again. That’s what scared me more than anything.”

They sat in silence for a moment. Then Nate whispered, “I never stopped loving you, either.” He looked at her face to see her reaction.

“You didn’t?” she asked. “Not even after what I did to you?”

Nate shook his head. “How could I, CD? How do you stop loving the person that you are meant to love for the rest of you life?”

“You don’t,” CD agreed knowingly. She looked at Nate, and then looked down as another tear rolled down her cheek. She dabbed it with a tissue.

Nate felt bad seeing her like this. “What’s wrong?” he asked, full of concern.

“It’s just that this is the first time since I left when I have been able to connect with anyone that I’m close to. I have been so lonely.....I’m sorry I’m such a crybaby.”

Nate wrapped his arms around her this time. He held her with all the love and compassion he had. He wiped away her tears. “Go ahead and cry. You have been so brave. You have every right to cry,” he soothed. “And now, you never have to worry about being lonely again.”

CD turned her face to look at his eyes. Her lips were just a hair’s width away from his. “Do you really mean that?"she asked.

"Of course I do. We've spent way too much time apart now.....I'm not going to let you go again. Ever."

CD looked at him soberly. "Do you still love me?”

“CD, I will always love you,” he whispered. With that, he could wait no longer. Nate pressed his lips to hers and pulled her body towards his. CD eagerly and passionately kissed him back. Their mouths melded together. CD pulled her arms around his back and her hands gripped his body, never wanting to let go. This was the perfect moment that they both had dreamed of since their separation. Their hands glided along each other’s forms, eager to reacquaint themselves with each other.

CD smiled to herself as she realized, ‘The last time we did this the baby happened.’ Then she remembered the baby. He was still taking his morning nap, fortunately, but she had been so caught up in what was happening between her and Nate that she had forgotten the baby. Reluctantly, she broke off the kiss.

“I’m-I’m sorry,” Nate mumbled. “I shouldn’t have just—“

“No, no, I loved it. This is what I have been dreaming of for the longest time.....hell, I’ve been dreaming of this since the day I met you, it’s just.....I have something else to tell you.”

Awwww, Kelly! Well, I was planning on waiting a little longer to post this, but since Kelly doesn't know when she'll have a computer again aftetr tonight, I'm going to post more now. But keep in mind, I was planning on spacing this, so it might be a WHILE before I post again! hehe

“I’m-I’m sorry,” Nate mumbled. “I shouldn’t have just—“

“No, no, I loved it. This is what I have been dreaming of for the longest time.....hell, I’ve been dreaming of this since the day I met you, it’s just.....I have something else to tell you.”

Nate grew a little concerned. What could be wrong? Did something else stand in their way? “What, sweetheart?”

CD reached for his hand and stood up. “Come with me and let me show you.” Nate nervously stood up and followed her down the hallway to the bedrooms. CD opened a closed door and led Nate into a darkened room. A white noise machine was making the sound of a spring rain. Nate smelled a sweet scent in the air.....what did it smell like? Could it be baby powder? Nate’s eyes adjusted to the darkness as some daylight crept in from behind the blinds. He gasped when he saw a baby crib. His stomach felt as thought it was a tight knot. He could have sworn that his heart skipped a beat as well.

“Wha........” he whispered in shock and confusion. He felt as though he might become sick if CD were to tell him that she had had another man’s baby. CD led him up to the edge of the crib. There was a peacefully sleeping baby boy. He was safely and warmly tucked beneath a fleece blanket. He held onto a little stuffed bear. Nate guessed the baby was about eight to ten months old. He hoped against hope that this was his baby....but he was also scared that it was and that he’d missed it all.

CD reached into the crib and slowly and gently lifted the sleeping child, and then held him in her arms. She looked for Nate’s reaction. “Nate.....I’d like you to meet somebody,” she started. “This,” she said and placed the baby in Nate’s arms, “is our son.”

Nate held onto the baby, despite his astonishment. “OUR son?” he choked. Nate’s eyes were as big as saucers as they stared at CD.

CD nodded. “Mm hmm.....I call him Natie, but his real name is Nathaniel.” She looked to Nate for approval.

“I’m.....I’m speechless, CD,” was all Nate could say.

CD got a little worried. “I’m sorry, I know this is such a shock to you, I should have warned you.”

“No, CD, that’s fine. I’m just.....amazed, is all. Absolutely amazed.” Nate started at his little boy, who started to awaken. Natie, the baby, opened his eyes and began to cry a little. “Shh.....shhh.....Daddy’s got you,” Nate whispered, and moved the baby up onto his chest and shoulder. He stroked the baby’s head and back to soothe him. CD watched in amazement. She could hardly believe how wonderful Nate was being about all of this. Natie settled a little, and Nate looked at CD in bewilderment. “He’s beautiful.”

“I know,” CD replied and smiled. “I wish I could have told you before.....I wanted so badly to tell you before, but I just couldn’t. I didn’t want to risk it all.”

Nate shook his head, still in such shock. It was good shock, but still shock. “But I....I thought that you couldn’t get pregnant! I thought you had your tubes tied.”

“Well, apparently, it’s not 100%,” CD laughed.

“When did you find out about him?”

“About six weeks or so after......after,” she trailed off.

Nate sadly nodded knowingly. “His name is Nathaniel, huh?” Nate replied with a grin and winked at her.

CD smiled and nodded. “Sure is. I wanted to make sure that his daddy would like it, too.”

“He sure does,” Nate added. Then he looked back at the baby. “Hey there, little fella! Have you been treating your mom well?” CD smiled at them. “You and I are going to make up for lost time, you got that, my little man? We’re going to fish and play catch and I’m going to take you to every home game and.....everything. You’re my boy now.” Nate looked at CD and smiled broadly. He couldn’t imagine that he could ever be happier than he was now, at this moment.

CD moved next to the two loves of her life, and placed one arm on Nate’s back and one hand on her baby. She and Nate smiled at each other, and then moved in for a kiss. The connection that they shared coursed through them like an electric current. It was as if no time had passed.

Nate looked at CD, then at his baby, and then back to CD. He thought of all that she had gone through, and mostly for him. He knew that had CD been on her own when she received that threat, she would most assuredly faced it head on, but because she had loved him so much....she paid the price to protect him. To top it all off, she had had to carry and raise his baby, all on her own. “I love you both so much.”

CD smiled at him. “And we love you.” She placed one hand on his. “Are you hungry yet?”

Nate looked to CD in surprise and smiled. “You know me well.”

CD smiled at him. “And we love you.” She placed one hand on his. “Are you hungry yet?”

Nate looked to CD in surprise and smiled. “You know me well.”

CD looked at Nate in surprise and laughed. I was talking to Nate Jr. here!” she chuckled.

“Oh,” Nate said with a shy, embarrassed smile.

“He’s due for his lunch,” she added and went to reach for him from Nate’s arms. Nate looked at her. ‘Is that disappointment I see on his face?’ CD thought at his reaction. “Would you like to feed him?” CD asked.

Nate’s face lit up. “Sure! I’d love to!” he replied with a grin and slightly bounced the baby in his arms.

“OK, Daddy,” CD replied with a smile, kissed the baby on the top of his head, and then gave his dad a kiss as well. “Let’s go find something for this little guy to eat. That way he’ll let us eat in peace later.”

She led them back down the hallway to the kitchen and opened the cupboard. “Is there anything I can do to help?” Nate asked.

CD grabbed a jar of baby food and turned to face Nate. “Nope, got it all taken care of!” she replied and smiled. She pulled a little spoon out of a drawer. It had a Snoopy handle. Then she pulled the tray off the high chair, and Nate plopped Natie into the seat and buckled the belt. CD replaced the tray. “Sit down,” she said to Nate, and handed him the jar of baby peaches.

Nate looked at her and took them. Then CD tied a little blue bib around Natie’s neck. Nate was just amazed at how she automatically did all of this. She looked like a real mama. Although it was so different from how Nate had seen her when they were first together, it somehow fit. It was so natural, that it did not seem weird at all. “Wow, where did you learn all of this?” Nate asked her.

CD chuckled. “Well, when you have a baby, you had better learn it quick, or else.”

Nate smiled and shook his head. She still amazed him, after all this time. He looked at the jar and spoon that he was holding. Natie was starting to get quite testy, waiting for his lunch. “OK, um, how do I do this?”

CD smiled. “Open the jar, spoon a little out, and put it in his mouth,” she replied as she sat down on the other side of the high chair.

Nate popped the jar open, spooned a small amount of the peaches out, and held it to Natie’s lips. Natie opened his mouth, and Nate slid the spoon into it. Nate looked at CD with a satisfied grin. “He’s eating!”

“He sure is,” CD replied. “That’s nothing, though. He’ll probably go through another one of those and some cheerios before he’s full.....he got his daddy’s appetite.”

Nate laughed. He continued to feed the baby as he and CD talked. “I’m just....in awe of you, CD. Of all of this. I can’t believe everything that you’ve gone through during all this time......you are just so awesome.”

CD blushed. “Well, I can’t say that it was easy.....but it was just stuff that needed to be done. I’m not that special. There are lots of single moms out there.”

“I know, it’s just that you knew that you didn’t have to be a single mom. It was different. You knew that I would have wanted to know, and I would have wanted to be there for the two of you 100 %......you just knew that the risks outweighed the disadvantages.”

CD nodded. She watched Nate feed their baby. Her heart felt more full than it had ever been. She felt her eyes moisten slightly and blinked a few times. She’d always known that Nate loved kids. He was such a natural. She was just sorry that he’d had to miss so much of the baby’s life already. She reached out and rubbed Natie’s arm. “Is that your daddy feeding you lunch? Why, yes it is, yes it is!” she exclaimed in a babyish voice.

Nate kept feeding his son lunch, until the little boy started to squawk that he wanted to get down and play. CD went to lift Natie from the high chair, but Nate stopped her. “That’s OK, CD. I’ll do it. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do around here.” He slid his eyes to see her face.

She was just watching with a smile on her face. She wanted to say, but didn’t, ‘I hope that ‘catching up’ means with me, too.’

Nate picked Natie up and held his high up in the air. “All full, buddy?” he asked. Then Nate’s happy expression quickly turned to disgust. “Whew, somebody needs a diaper change!”

CD couldn’t help but laugh. “Hey, you said you wanted to ‘catch up.’ I think this MORE than qualifies as something that you need to catch up on, because I’ve done, oh, let’s see, about a million diaper changes so far.”

Nate made a face at her. “OK, let’s get to it, then.”

Ten minutes later, Nate carried Natie into the living room and set him down on his baby quilt. CD followed them in. Nate had bugged out eyes. “I didn’t realize a child could DO that!”

CD could only laugh. “Yeah, well, get used to it,” she said and came up beside Nate. She smiled at him, and placed her hand on his back.

Nate looked back at her. He took his arm and wrapped it around her side, pulling her to him. Then he kissed her. First tentatively, and as CD kissed back, he kissed intensely. They really did have so much catching up to do.....it had been so long. They had spent nearly as much time apart as they did together. And of the time that they had had together, only a small amount of that had they spent as a couple.

They pulled back after a minute, remembering that their child was watching them. CD smiled. “I’ve got to say, Nate, you are even hotter than I remember.”

Nate chuckled. “I was going to say the same thing about you.” He gave her a wink. Then he got down on the floor and started to play with his baby.

CD got down on the floor with them, too. She put her hands over her eyes. “Pee-a-boo!” she exclaimed, and removed her hands from her face. Natie laughed and clapped his little hands. CD did it again, and the same response was repeated.

“Let me try,” Nate said. He did the peek–a-boo game, too, and Natie just stared at him with wide eyes.

“Mum?” Natie asked and looked at CD.

CD smiled at him. “Look, Daddy went peek-a-boo! Look!” she said, and pointed at his dad. Nate played the game again.

Natie grinned. “Peek-boo!” he warbled in his baby voice.

CD laughed. “I have to get a picture of this,” she said and got up to grab her camera. She came back half a minute later, to find Nate holding his son’s hands, helping him stand.

“Look, honey! He’s standing!” Nate exclaimed, grinning from ear-to-ear like the proud Daddy that he was.

CD saw the two of them together, father and son, with matching smiles on their faces. She had known that he had Nate’s smile, but it wasn’t as apparent as it was now, seeing them together. A tear sprang to her eyes and she took a picture.

The family played together a little while longer, until CD remembered that she and Nate hadn’t eaten yet. It was already mid-afternoon. The time had just flown by, neither noticing because other things were so much more important. “Oh, I’m sorry, Nate, we still have to eat!” she announced and got up, walking into the kitchen.

In just a few minutes, lunch was on the table and she and Nate sat down to eat. They ate in silence for a moment, both trying to process all the events of the day. It was so much, so fast, and yet it wasn’t fast enough. CD was dying to ask him what he had done while she was gone. She kept going back on forth in her mind if she should ask him, and trying to prepare herself for what he might say. Finally, she decided to go ahead and bring it up.

Finally, she decided to go ahead and bring it up.

“Nate...I will totally understand if you aren’t ready to talk about this, but in case you do want to talk....nevermind.”

“What, CD?” he asked, curiously.

“Nothing. I shouldn’t bring it up.”

“CD, you can talk to me about anything. I’m your best friend, remember?” He placed one hand on hers.

CD studied his face to see if he was being honest. Of course, she knew that when it came to her, he meant every word he said. “OK, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“OK, I won’t,” he replied with a smile.

“How did you.....what did you do while I was gone?”

“What do you mean?”

“You know....what happened? Did you just continue on with your everyday life, how is the division.....and....” she said in a whisper, almost too quiet for Nate to hear, “did you date anyone....”

“What was that?”

“Did you continue on with your everyday life, how is the—“

“Not that,” Nate interrupted. “What was that last part?”

“Did you date anyone,” CD again said in a low voice. “I just.....need to know what I’m dealing with here. I mean, if you’ve got a girlfriend or something, I need to know now, or this whole thing is pointless.”

Nate took a deep breath. “I’m not dating anyone," he replied firmly. "You're the only one who can call me 'taken.'"

CD felt as though a large weight had been lifted from her shoulders. “Good,” she said.

“I, um, never really dated after you, CD,” he answered, in all truthfulness. He had not, in fact, dated while she was gone. He’d had a one-night-stand and the disgusting series of sexual escapades with Suzanne, which he now deeply regretted. He would give anything to say that he had stayed true to CD while she carried and raised his baby by herself.

CD looked relieved. Nate felt bad, knowing that she didn’t know about the women he had slept with. The only woman he wanted to ever sleep with was CD. But the thought of that triggered another fear, something that he hadn’t thought of until now, and it scared the hell out of him. What if he had gotten a disease? What if those few moments of insanity had ruined his life forever? He wouldn’t ever be able to make love to CD again. Would she ever forgive him?

After lunch, Nate and CD decided to put Natie in the stroller and go for a walk. The sun was shining, and the temperature was perfect. They chatted as they walked along, both trying to catch up on reacquainting themselves with each other. There was so much to talk about. Nate just tried to soak it all in. This had been the most amazing day of his life. As he walked along, with his long-lost love and his baby, his heart felt so full he thought that it would burst. He kept pinching himself, as he kept expecting that he would wake up and this would just be another one of his dreams.

On CD’s side, she, too, tried to soak it all in. For her, however, if was more of a watershed of relief. She had spent too long fighting her own battles, staying tough, while her heart ached and, at times, she thought that her worries about her and Nate’s future would overtake her. Now, she felt more relief than she ever had in her life. She wasn’t sure what exactly the future held, but she now knew that not only would she not have to face it alone, but that she would face it with Nate.

Natie fell asleep in the stroller, so the family returned home to put him to bed for his nap. When CD and Nate left his bedroom, Nate sighed and said, “Well, I should probably get going. You probably have things to do, and you don’t need me hanging around all day.” He looked at her, and was surprised to find that her eyes looked almost.....hurt.

“No, Nate, please stay!” she replied, in a pleading voice, and grasped his hand.

“Look, you’ve got the baby asleep, why don’t you let me get out of here and you can take some time for yourself now?”

“Nate,” she started in a low voice, “what do you think I’m doing?” Then she grasped his other hand, gently pushed him against the wall, and planted her mouth on his. They feverishly kissed for several minutes, now realizing that they were alone. CD raked her fingers along his body, over his back and shoulder and through his hair. She couldn’t wait for him to make love to her again, so that she could truly feel reconnected to him. Nate’s hands groped her body, as well, first through her clothing and then under her shirt. His kisses moved from her lips to her jaw, neck, shoulders, collarbone, and then found their way to her cleavage. Nate gripped her and they rotated 180 degrees so that she was now against the wall.

“Oh, Nate.....” CD panted. “You have no idea how much I missed this. You have no idea how much I still love you.” She placed her hands on the sides of his head, and pulled his face up to hers again to kiss him.

“CD, I’m sure I missed this even more than you,” he panted as well. “And I will always love you.”

He kissed her more, until CD interrupted. “Let’s go to bed.”

Nate started to nod eagerly, and picked her up. CD wrapped her legs around his waist, their lips never parting. He carried her to the doorway, and stumbled in the doorway. He had to grab the wall to catch himself. When he did that, though, he had a flashback that made his heart race. ‘Suzanne,’ he thought. His heart pounded with a combination of anger, disappointment, and fear. He knew he had to stop, now, before he hurt CD. He had to come up with a reason for stopping. He gently set her down, and pulled back from her. Nate still held her hands, though.

“What?” CD wondered aloud.

“I.....I can’t. I mean, not tonight,” Nate stammered sadly.

“I don’t understand,” CD replied with disappointment in her voice on her face. “I thought you wanted me.”

“Oh, lord, CD, I do! I do want you, with every fiber of my being!” he exclaimed, and sighed. “I just....don’t want to rush this, OK?

“RUSH this?!” CD exclaimed. “I’ve known you for 3 ½ freakin years!”

“I don’t mean like that, CD. I mean, this is all so much, at once, and I want to savor it. This so far has been a day, far beyond my wildest dreams, and I just don’t want to throw it all together at once. So far today, I found you after all this time, you told me that you love me, you told me that we have a baby together, you told me that you could have been killed.....let me save making love to you, when I have everything to give to you. Let me make it special.”

CD felt her heart melt at that. She was still disappointed that she would spend another night without Nate, but at least now, she would have yet more to look forward to for the next day. “Well, OK.....if that’s how you really feel. But, I have to tell you, after 18 months, anything that we could do together in bed would be special.”

Nate smiled, gave her another kiss, and led her back out of the bedroom. Nate prayed in his mind, ‘Please, God, let everything be OK.’

I'm so sorry it's been so long since I posted!!!! But I wrote a lot today, so here's some of it:
--------------------------------------------------------

Before it seemed possible, night fell. Late night, in fact. Time had seemed to stand still, as if the only ones in the world were the newly reunited family. It took all Nate had to not beg CD to marry him on the spot that night. Little did he know that CD was holding herself back from the same question. Neither wanted to let the other out of their sight again. Nate didn’t know how he would be able to tear himself away and go home that night. He and CD cuddled contentedly on the sofa, CD’s head on his chest and his arms enveloping her.

“I wish we could stay like this forever,” CD murmured.

Nate kissed the top of her head. “We can. We will,” he replied.

“No, I mean just like we are at this moment. It’s so perfect. It’s like a dream.”

“Yeah, I’ve had the same dream.”

“Let’s promise, right now, that no matter what happens, we will be together forever.”

Nate smiled at her. “I promise.”

“I promise,” she repeated and turned to face him, and then kiss him. Then she settled back into his arms.

“You don’t have to go tonight, Nate.”

“Honey, I’ve got to go to work in the morning. You know how those 8 AM’s kill.”

“Yeah, but......you can just go straight from here to work in the morning.”

Nate cocked his head at her and gave a little smirk. “Man, you’d do anything to get me into bed, wouldn’t you?”

“Oh Nate, shut up!” she laughed. “I meant, you know......” she smiled coyly and traced her fingers over his hand, “we haven’t spent a night together since......well, since Natie,” she chuckled.

Nate smiled. “But what about my clothes? I didn’t bring any extra clothes.”

“Um, that’s not a problem,” CD replied.

“Huh?”

“Well, I kind of stole a change of your clothes when I left.”

“You WHAT?!” Nate asked in disbelief.

“I needed to bring with something that smelled like you!” CD grinned and winked at him.

“Uh huh,” Nate replied. “Yeah, that’s your story and you stick to it,” he added and gave her a wink back.

They sat in silence for a moment. Then CD turned to face him again. “I just need......Nate, can you just hold me tonight?”

A peaceful smile spread across Nate’s face. “Yes. That, I can do.”

CD smiled as well. She stood up, still holding Nate’s hand, and the couple walked towards the bedroom. They slid beneath the sheets, pulling the warm quilt over them as they went. CD settled down into the mattress, and led Nate’s arm under the back of her neck. Nate them gently placed his other arm across her waist, as he, too, settled himself in a comfortable spot. He gently kissed CD’s lips one last time, and then closed his eyes. He was at peace with the world and everyone in it. ‘Hold you tonight?’ he thought. ‘I’ll hold you forever.’

The next morning, Nate and CD got up early so they could have a few more moments alone before they both had to rush off to their jobs. They had breakfast together, and then got Natie up, fed, dressed, and packed for his day at the sitter’s.

Nate gave both CD and his son a kiss before he left. “I’ll call you later, OK, sweets?” he said to CD.

“OK, that’ll be great,” CD replied. “Have a good day at work....and I love you.”

“I love you too,” Nate said. Then he turned and hurried back to San Francisco.

CD packed Natie into his carseat and dropped him off at the sitter’s, before going to her own job as the supervisor of investigations at the private security company that she worked at. She liked her job, and it paid better.....but she missed the division. She missed being a homicide inspector at the San Francisco Central Felony Division, and working with her partner and best friends every day. When she left, she didn’t leave just Nate behind. She had also left her good friends behind. She missed Kate’s friendship and motherly guidance. She missed Jinny’s open ears and closed mouth. She missed Raina’s enthusiasm and empathy. Hell, she even missed Magda. She wasn’t sure why, but it just wasn’t the same without her. But most of all, she missed the feeling of family that she felt at that division.

~~~~~~~
Nate strode into the division with a grin on his face. He was freshly showered, hair washed and styled, and his face clean-shaven. His clothes were unwrinkled; his shirt was tucked in. Other than needing a haircut, he looked like his old self. Raina was already sitting at her desk, checking her e-mail. An aroma of sweet men’s cologne wafted past her nose, and she looked up to find its source. Her eyes widened when she saw Nate and his new “old” look. “Well well well, aren’t we looking fine today!” she exclaimed.
Nate chuckled and sat down in his chair. “Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m FEELING pretty fine today, too.”
“Ooooh, does this have to do anything with what I think it does?” she fished, her face lit up like a Christmas tree.
“I don’t know, Raina, what do you think it is?” he replied, knowing full well what she meant.
“Nate! Come on! Let’s face it, you haven’t come into work this chipper since......since this chair’s previous occupant was sitting here. Spill!”
Nate looked around to see if anyone was watching, and then leaned forward closer, and in a low voice said, “Well, I don’t kiss and tell, but—“
“KISS?!” Raina exclaimed.
“Raina!” Nate hissed, looking around again to see if anyone had noticed. A couple people had, but then turned back to their own work.
“Ooops, sorry. Kissed?” she repeated, in a whisper.
“Well, let’s just say that......CD and I have talked, and we are back together.
Raina’s jaw dropped, and then she impulsively leaped from her chair to hug him. “Oh my god, Nate, I’m so happy for you! For BOTH of you!!!” she exclaimed.
Nate grinned at how excited she was for them. Raina had always wanted to see Nate and CD’s relationship thrive. Quite frankly, she was the only one who even seemed to care about CD anymore. The others cared, too, but couldn’t find a way to express it and didn’t know what to say to Nate. “Sssshhhh,” he whispered. “And that’s not all.” He couldn’t hold back his most exciting news. “I just found out that I have a son.”
Raina’s eyes bugged out, and a strange sounding squeak sounded from her throat. She put her hand up to her mouth, and then grabbed Nate’s arm and pulled him into the interrogation room. “DETAILS!” she squeaked.
Nate just laughed, and then went on to tell her all about his and CD’s precious baby boy.
After Nate finished filling in Raina on what she deserved to know, although completely skimming over much of what he and CD had discussed, Nate remembered something that he needed to do. “Um, we haven’t gotten assigned a case yet, right?”
“No, Cap isn’t in yet. I guess this is one of her later mornings.”
“OK, well, I’ve got something I need to take care of. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” With that, he quickly walked off.
“Where are you go.....” Raina trailed off.
Nate walked into the SFPD nursing and testing center, and walked up to the woman at the counter, and flashed his badge. “I need to get a blood test right away.”
“And what’s the name of the recipient?” she asked, getting ready to write on her clipboard.
“Nate Basso,” he said.
“No, I mean the suspect or victim. The one who’s getting tested.”
“That’s me.”
“Um, I see. And what are we looking for? Alcohol? Drugs?”
“Um....” Nate’s ears turned pink. “STD’s.”
She glanced at his embarrassed face. “OK, just wait over there. It’ll be 5 to 10 minutes.”
Nate nodded and took a seat. He pulled out his cell phone and called his doctor. “Hi, yeah, I’m Nate Basso and I’m a patient of Dr. Gerald. I need to make an appointment, ASAP......um, are you sure you don’t have anything for today? Any cancellations?”......sure, I can be there in 45 minutes. Thanks so much!”
Nate hung up and sat waiting for his blood test. He kept anxiously checking his watch. He kept alternating between telling himself that it would all be fine and telling himself that he had a disease, and therefore wishing to kill both himself and the tramp that gave it to him. A couple of minutes later, his name was called and he gave his blood sample to be tested. He then quickly went on his way to the doctor.
~ 90 Minutes Later ~
Nate checked out of the doctor’s office. Dr. Gerald had told him that he checked out fine externally, but they would have to wait for the lab results to be sure. It would be another day before those results came in. Nate was feeling a little better, but he was still very worried about the possibility of HIV. That, he knew, was a death sentence. He made his way down the corridor of the large medical complex, his eyes on his keys as he looked for his car key. He wasn’t looking ahead, and almost ran into a nurse.
“Oh, excuse me!” she said, startling Nate.
“Oh, I’m sorry!” Nate replied, and quickly looked up to see who he had bumped into. It was the last person that he ever wanted to see again. Well, the second to last person. Her husband would be worse. “Uh.....” he mumbled, not knowing what to say.
“Hello, Nate,” Suzanne said. “What brings you here?”
“Um....uh, t-tests,” he replied nervously.
“Oh. Yeah, the damn doctors want tests on everything these days....even for healthy, strapping young men, like yourself,” Suzanne purred with an evil yet seductive smile. Then she winked at him.
“I have to go,” Nate replied, obviously irritated and shoved past her.
“Nate?”
Nate let out an exasperated sigh, stopped, and turned around. “What.”
“You can come over again, if you like. My husband’s out of town.”
The expression that overtook Nate’s face was priceless. It was an expression of shock, disbelief, and aggravation. “What is WRONG with you?!” he barked. “NO, I’m not going to come over! I never want to see your sorry face again; do I make myself clear? I’m going to spend the rest of my life with a woman who loves me and ONLY me, and not for my ass! Lord, leave me alone, you psycho freak!” With that, he turned on his heel and quickly fled.
Suzanne stood, fuming, in her blue scrubs. ‘That bastard,’ she thought. Does he really think that he can reject me and get away with it?’ Her mind raced for an idea of revenge. Then she remembered his tests. ‘Yeah, we’ll see how those results come out,’ she thought and gave an evil smirk.
Nate hustled out to his car, trying to shake the willies of seeing Suzanne off of him. That was a blast from the past that was NOT welcome. He wanted to erase all memory of that mistake named Suzanne from his mind. He hoped to God that he would never have to tell CD about her. Once Nate got settled into his seat, he glanced at his watch. It was nearly noon already, and all he had done was get tested. He pulled out his cell phone and dialed CD’s number.
“Hey sweetie,” CD answered.
“Hey, babe. What are you up to?”
“Oh, just wrapping up a few things here before I go to lunch. What about you?”
“Yeah, same here......I miss you,” he said with a little sheepish smile.
CD was grinning on the other end of the line. “I miss you more,” she murmured into the phone.
“You want to do something tonight? We could take the baby and have pizza or something.”
“Yeah, definitely. That would be perfect.”
“Do you want me to come pick you up?”
“No, that’s OK. We can just meet you down there.”
“OK. Where?”
“Um.....someplace with grown-up food,” CD laughed. “I don’t want any pizza with a smiley face drawn on it.”
“OK, Lucca’s, then?”
“Yeah, perfect....I’ll get the baby and meet you there about 7.”
“Great. You have a good afternoon, now, sweetheart. I love you,” Nate told her.
CD smiled. “I love you, too.”
Nate hung up, and then his eyes looked out dreamily as he was caught up in his thoughts. He was awakened out of them when he phone rang. It was Raina. “Oh, Raina, I’m so sorry I’ve been gone all morning. I should have called.”
Raina ignored that. “Nate, exactly when are you planning on helping me today?”
“I’m on my way right now,” he replied and started backing out of his spot.
“Have you eaten yet?” she asked.
“No. I can pick up something for you, if you want.”
“It’ll have to wait. We just got a homicide.”
“Swell,” Nate replied and drove off.
~~~~~~~~

Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Suzanne knew something was up. She didn’t know what type of testing that Nate had had, but she knew that whatever it was, he had probably also had blood work done at the police lab. She also knew that if she mentioned Nate’s tests to her husband, he would decide on his own to tamper with them to get even. ‘So, Nate dumps me and now he says that he’s with someone else. I think it’s time that he learned a little lesson.’ She walked to her nurse’s station, looked around, and dialed her husband’s number.

“Yeah?” he replied.

“I was just wondering how you’re doing,” she said, pretending to sound sweet.

“Why? Have you gone through all the guys at the hospital already?”

“Oh, honey, you know it’s not like that. You know I only cheated on you that one time, and I admitted it to you.”

“Yeah, once. Right,” he flippantly replied, not believing a word of it.

“Speaking of which....guess who I ran into today?”

“Hmmm.....that firefighter from “Providence”?

Suzanne laughed. “No, honey. I ran into Nate Basso.”

He set his jaw and began to grind his teeth. “Oh, really. Getting plastic surgery, I hope?”

“He said he was getting some tests done. I wonder why he didn’t just get them done at the police lab? Well, maybe they weren’t blood tests. Who knows.”

The wheels starting turning in her husband’s mind. “Yeah....who knows,” he repeated. “Well, Suzanne, I need to get back to work. You know how busy police work can be.”

He hung up and sat thinking for a moment. Then he got up and headed towards the lab.

Chet Richland, Suzanne’s husband, walked into the testing lab at the SFPD. “Can I help you?”
The woman behind the desk asked.

Chet flashed his badge. “I just have to check on something for one of my cases.”

“OK, name or case number?”

“Um, no, that’s OK. I don’t need to bother you. I can check on it myself.”

“I’m sorry, detective, but only medical personnel is authorized behind this counter.”

“Are you kidding me?”

“Um, no......”

“OK, fine, never mind then,” Chet replied and turned away.

“Detective? Don’t you need that information?” she called after him.

“Not right now,” he answered and left.

~~~~~~~~
Nate met up with Raina at the crime scene of their latest homicide case. As they were wrapping up at the scene, Raina said to him, “So, what’s up with you today? You don’t usually just take off for half a day.”
Nate sighed. “Just stuff, Raina.”
“Nate,” Raina stated in an impatient voice.
“What?”
“Look, I know that I will never be the partner that CD was to you. In fact, I don’t want to be. That was you and CD, and we’re us. But....how long do I have to wait before you stop hiding from me?”
Nate looked at her in surprise and bewilderment. “I’m not hiding from you.”
“Yes you are. You’ve hid from me our entire partnership. I mean, yeah, I can understand it in the beginning. You weren’t yourself, and it was all new. But don’t you think that considering the current situation, and after all we’ve been through, that I deserve a little openness from you?”
Nate was silent for a moment. His arms were crossed, and he stared at the floor. His mind flashed back on all that had happened during their partnership. Who had he gone to when he was beaten to a bloody pulp by Suzanne’s husband? Raina. Even then, when he was physically defeated and crying on the inside and out, he hadn’t shared with her the real reason for his tears. Both knew at the time that his grief was really for CD, but neither mentioned it. Nate’s eyes looked up from the floor to Raina’s face. “I’m sorry, Raina.” Raina remained silent, but gave a slight nod. “You’re right. I should have opened up to you. I wanted to. I was just afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“I don’t know,” Nate replied and shook his head. “I guess I thought that if I talked out all the stuff that I was feeling about CD, that I would look like a fool.”
“Nate,” Raina replied, “the only way that you could look like a fool is if you acted like she hadn’t meant anything to you.”
Nate nodded. “I know that now.”
They both remained silent for a moment. Then Raina put a smile on her face. “Well, the important thing is that CD is back, and you two still love each other, and you have that beautiful baby to take care of now.”
A big smile spread across Nate’s face. “Yes. It’s so....incredible.” He looked away, and paused as if he wanted to say something. His eyes were moist. Nate looked back at her. “Raina....I’m so in love with her,” he said as his voice caught on the lump in his throat.
All Raina could do was smile. She was genuinely so happy for him. For all of them. “You deserve it.”
Nate gave a slight nod, and then started to walk towards his car. Thinking back on what she had said a few minutes before, Nate said, “Raina?”
“Yeah?”
“Where I was this morning......tests.”
Raina looked back at him knowingly. “Everything’s going to be OK.”
“I hope so.”
Nate got off work and made a quick stop on the way to dinner. He wanted to get there early, so he wouldn’t waste a minute of his time with his family. He parked and went inside Lucca’s to get the table. Nate glanced at a table for two as he made his way to the table for four. ‘And baby makes three,’ he thought happily to himself. He laid one perfect red rose on the place setting opposite him.
Just as he laid the rose down, he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to look and was greeted by a sweet, innocent kiss from CD. “Surprise,” she murmured as she pulled back and placed the baby carrier on the seat next to Nate.
An expression of contentment was on Nate’s face. His eyes shown at her. “Hey sweets.” His eyes traveled over her form as she situated Natie. She just took his breath away. “You look so beautiful.”
CD smiled at him, slightly flattered. “Thank you.”
Nate got up to help her with the baby. “I’ll go see if we can get a high chair.” He went and found the waiter, who then brought the high chair to their table. CD went to place the baby inside of it, but Nate stopped her. “No, honey, that’s OK. It’s my turn.” CD smiled at him, and stood back to watch. Nate plopped his son into the seat, buckled him, and then fumbled with the tray.
CD smiled. “Here, let me help.” She took one look at the underside of the tray, and then expertly slid it into place.
Nate looked at it and then looked at her with a surprised face. “How’d you do that?”
“I have my ways,” she replied with a smile and a wink. Her face was inches from his.
“So do I,” Nate replied with a glint in his eye. He took her in his arms for a brief but heartfelt kiss. “Now then....how about dinner?”
CD grinned. “Dinner sounds good.” She took her seat, to be greeted by the rose. Her sky blue eyes sparkled at him as she picked up the rose and held it to her nose. She didn’t say anything, but simply reached across the table and placed her hand on his.
~~~~~~~

Dinner ended, and CD sighed. “What’s wrong, honey?” Nate asked.

“Oh, nothing.....it’s just that it’s getting late, and Natie needs to get to bed.”

“Oh, yeah.”

CD looked at Nate with longing. “I just don’t want to say goodnight already. I’ve hardly gotten to see you today.”

“I know, I know....I feel the same way,” Nate replied and held her hand. “No matter where I am, or what I’m doing.....I think of you.”

“If it’s raining or... if it’s not raining,” CD added with a little laugh.

“Then, too,” Nate chuckled.

“So, do you want to come with us tonight?”

“I’d like that.”

------------------------------------------

CD nursed the baby and rocked him to sleep, as Nate looked on. He didn’t want to miss one more moment of his child’s life. They laid him in the crib, and then CD took Nate’s hand and led him out to the living room. They plopped down on the sofa, and CD used her fingers to pull her shoulder-length hair into a low ponytail. She then nestled into Nate’s waiting arms, and he held her tight. “I have been waiting all day for this.”

“Mmmm.....me too,” she purred back. “This is nice.”

“It sure is,” Nate agreed, and gave her a little squeeze. They sat in silence for a moment, until Nate said, “Could you tell me about Natie’s birth?”

CD looked at him and smiled. “I’d love to. But let me go get something first.” She got up and walked over to the bookcase, retrieving a photo album, and then joined Nate on the sofa again. She sat cross-legged beside him and opened the album. “Well, first here’s a picture of me when I put on my first maternity outfit. I was about 5 months along then.” She pointed to a picture of a rounded version of herself, wearing jeans and a white dress shirt.

Nate stared at the photo, taking it in. “You looked so incredibly beautiful.” On the inside, he was kicking himself for missing it.

CD smiled, and continued on. “Now here’s my ultrasounds.” Behind the plastic were several versions of her sonogram photos, from varying stages of development. Nate could see how their son had developed.....in the first photo, he saw the little kidney-bean form. In the second photo, he could see how it now took the form of a baby, with a head and arms and legs. The later images showed the baby becoming more and more defined. A lump formed in his throat. CD turned the page. “Oh my gosh, that child gave me the worst heartburn. I had to keep a bottle of Maalox by my bed,” CD laughed as she pointed to a photo of all the newly-bought baby items stacked up in her bedroom, where you could see a bottle of Maalox on the nightstand.

Nate smiled at her. “Sorry,” he said with a little chuckle.

“Yeah, don’t think that there weren’t a few moments when I blamed you for it all,” she laughed.

“And I gladly accept the blame,” Nate replied and patted CD on the knee.

CD looked back at the page. “OK, now this is it. This is from the day I went into labor. I took my maternity leave a couple of weeks earlier, and I was taking a nap that afternoon. I woke up, thinking that I had indigestion. So then I got up and started moving around, but then I noticed that it would go away and then come back again. It took me a while before I got the bright idea that maybe I was in labor,” she chuckled. “So then I called a friend from my new job, because earlier I’d asked her if she would take me to the hospital when I was going into labor. She came, picked me up, and took me. She even stayed with me the whole time.....it really helped, having someone there.”

Nate turned page after page of photos of CD at the hospital, Natie’s hospital picture, and pictures of them together. He had to keep blinking back tears. He wasn’t sure if they were tears of joy or sorrow.....or both. Then he came across a copy of Natie’s birth certificate. His eyes skimmed over the child’s line and the mother’s line. He was almost afraid of reading the father’s line. But then he saw it:

Father: Nathan Albert Francis Basso, age 33.

Nate’s jaw dropped, and he stared at CD with wide eyes. “You put my name on the birth certificate.”

CD gave a slight nod. “I know.”

“I’m just.....surprised. I hadn’t expected it.”

“Well, of course. You’re the daddy.”

Nate stared at her a moment longer, and then his gaze went back to the birth certificate. “His last name is Basso.”

“Of course it is. What other name would your son have?”

Nate gazed at her again in bewilderment and awe. “I’m just.....so incredibly honored, CD. I hadn’t expected this much credit. You’re the one who’s done everything.”

“That’s only because you didn’t have the opportunity. I know that if we’d been together all along, things would have been much different.”

Nate continued to slowly flip through the pages. There were more photos of CD and their baby. Although CD always looked happy in the pictures, Nate could tell that on the inside, CD harbored other feelings. She seemed to have a deep sadness within her that he could read even though the print of the photos. Someone who did not know her as well would probably not detect it, but he surely could. Finally, after he finished viewing the last page, he closed the book and looked to CD. “Thank you,” he said, with moisture in his eyes.

“My pleasure,” was all she said, and then wrapped her arms around him. “The next album will have you all over it.”

Nate looked back at the cover of the album that he was holding. CD had pasted colorful, fat letters on it that read, “Baby Nate,” and had his hospital photo on it. ‘I’m all over this one, too,’ he thought.

I don't have a lot of time anymore, but today was cloudy and I was off work so I thought I'd drop by and read a fan fiction or so... I picked yours- though I'm only on page three, I think it's excellent. I've really enjoyed the amount I have read so far. Keep up the great work.

Hopefully, when I decide to take the plunge and get back to writing I'm as good as you.

Wow, that is such a great compliment, coming from you!!!! Everybody I talk to says that you're the best, so thank so much for reading and saying the nice words! :) :)

OK TARA. As great as everyone's fics are on here, yours' almost always resort me to tears. Or come very close. LOL You write very descriptively and I can picture everything happening. And two key points I have to make: One.......I'll forgive you for it being short........because there was cuddling..........ahhhhhhhh how I love cuddling........BUT you HAVE to write something like her getting pregnant again ASAP so Nate can be there for it this time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Wow, everyone, thanks so much for all the wonderful replies. I don't think I've ever felt more appreciated as a writer! Thanks for waiting. It's been a tough couple of weeks for me. Here's some more.
--------------------------------------------------------------

Nate laid the photo album on the coffee table, and CD nestled back into his arms. “Well, now that you know what I’ve been up to,” she chuckled, “why don’t you tell me how things are going at the division.”

“Wow....well, a lot of stuff changed. A lot of the stuff is the same, it’s just.....really different now. You’d be really surprised if you were to walk into there now.”

“Oh, really? Like what changed?”

“It feels different. Raina has really matured....she’s a pretty serious cop now. Got tough, I guess. Maybe she felt like she had to fill your shoes or something....who knows. And although the captain came back, as you know, she’s different, too. Now she’s raising her granddaughter, so she’s pretty focused on that.”

“Wow, really? That’s great.....How sweet. Wait—what happened there? Why isn’t Amanda rasing her own daughter?”

“Um, long story. From what I heard, Amanda and Jill split, and Kate ended up with the kid.”

“Oh. Well, I’m sure that Cap is thrilled to have the baby there with her, though.”

“Yeah, she is..... Let’s see......Magda and Gabe separated, but now they’re trying to put their marriage back together again. And Jinny, well, Jinny has made a LOT out of her last year and a half,” Nate laughed.

CD started to give a little laugh, too. “Why? What happened?”

“To start with, she and Jack got divorced. Then right off the bat, she met this painter who was filling in as a sketch artist. They had a baby and then got married.”

“WHAT?!” Jinny Exstead seriously had a baby?!” CD gasped with a look of happiness and disbelief.

Nate chuckled. “Yeah, she did. John Reilly is the kid’s name. She and the guy, Hank, just got married Saturday, in fact. That’s where I was when you called me.”

CD grew silent. ‘Another wedding,’ she thought. “Well, sounds like everyone did pretty well, then.”

“Yeah, I guess. It just feels weird there now, though. It’s just not the same as during the good years, when we were partners.”

“Yeah, I know what you mean,” she said softly.

Nate thought for a moment, and then said, “Oh, I forgot the best part. You’ll get a kick out of this,” he laughed. CD waited expectantly for his answer. “OK, so Cap needed a new PSA, so who did she hire? I swear, it’s that pink power ranger. It’s freaky. And you know the worst? She’s even more annoying than the ranger was!” he laughed.

“Oh, come on, Nate, she can’t be that bad. I mean,” she began to giggle, “for you to call her the pink power ranger and all.”

“Hey, I’m telling you the truth here! This girl is the biggest suck-up I’ve ever seen. She’s practically got her lips attached to Cap’s ass,” he laughed.

“Eww.....BAD picture there, Nate,” CD groaned.

“I know, I know, sorry,” Nate chuckled. “Well, I don’t want to have to talk about her any more than I have to. Let’s just say that it would be the understatement of the millennium to say that it isn’t the same without you at the division,” he said and pulled her closer to himself.

CD smiled at him. “Thank you, sweetie.” Then she said in a soft voice, “I miss them.”

“I know.”

“I want to go see them, see the division.....I just don’t want to have to deal with the shock and questioning and answering and everything.”

“I know, honey. That’s got to be so hard. I could prepare them first, though, if you want.”

“Have you told anyone yet?”

“Just Raina. And I didn’t even tell her the reason for leaving and everything. Just the basics.”

“I see.” CD hated to admit it to herself, but she was just slightly jealous of Raina. Raina was now the one that Nate spent his days with, and not her. “Well, maybe after you and I get used to all of this, I’ll make a little visit over to the old Felony Division.”

“And of course show off the baby,” Nate added with a smile.

“Oh, definitely,” CD replied.

Hehe, yep, good ideas. ;)
---------------------------------------------------------

Soon after the conversation about the division, CD nodded off as she leaned on Nate. As much as she wanted to stay up with Nate and talk, it was late and she was exhausted. Nate scooped her up and made his way, slowly, to her bedroom. He laid her on one side of the bed, and then pulled the down comforter up and over her. He kissed her goodnight on the cheek, and then went to leave. Before he left, though, he stopped in the doorway to take one more look at her. His heart felt so full of love for her, that it felt that it would overflow. Impulsively, Nate decided that it wouldn’t hurt to spend another night there with the love of his life. He slipped out of his pants and shirt, leaving him in just his undershirt and boxers and crept under the covers. With his arm around CD, he gave her one more kiss and then fell asleep.

~~~~~~~~
Meanwhile, back at the SFPD headquarters, the medical lab was closed and dark for the night. Not a soul was in that area of the building— except for one.
Chet Richland crept to the locked door of the lab. He looked around to make sure that no one could see him, and then used his security pass to unlock the door and let himself inside. He turned on his flashlight, hopped over the counter, and started scanning the shelves for something with Nate Basso’s name on it. He didn’t know if there would be anything there, but figured it was worth a shot. After several minutes, he finally found a small blood test vial marked, “Basso, Nate.” ‘And we’ve hit the jackpot,’ he thought. Below the vial was a form with the tests needed to be run. HIV/AIDS was checked, but the test had not been completed yet. Chet chuckled to himself. He knew exactly why Nate needed that test to be done. ‘Serves him right.’ He personally knew that Suzanne couldn’t have given Nate anything, but that didn’t stop him from trying to destroy Nate’s life, anyway.
Chet looked further on for a blood test that was marked positive for HIV/AIDS. He found one, and switched the vials. The next morning, when Nate’s test would be run, if would not be of his own blood but that of someone who did have AIDS. Chet put everything in order, hopped back over the counter, and left the room. Little did he know that the surveillance camera had recorded everything.
~~~~~~~~

After CD had been asleep for a couple of hours, she halfway awakened, realizing that she was still dressed. She fumbled around in the dark, pulling off her pants, shirt, and socks, leaving her in just her bra and panties. Before she’d had Natie, she would have taken her bra off, as well, but now that she was nursing, it was more uncomfortable to be without it. She laid back down and rolled towards the middle of the bed, up against Nate. She smiled and wrapped her arms around him. In her sleepy haze, it felt as though no time has passed, as if it was when they first got together. Nate slightly turned into her, as well, snuggling up against her. He could feel her soft, bare skin against his. He could smell her natural, unique scent—the one that was just her own. Her sweet sensuality was killing him. His insides began to stir, and he knew that his would be one long night.

Nope, sorry, Lisa, I'll NEVER make it any better.....;)

Ok, maybe not in this post, but just stick with me. ;) Btw, this is a really long post for me, so it'll be a while before the next one!
----------------------------------------------------------

The next morning, Nate headed in to work. He hoped that his test results were ready, so he gave the lab a call. “Hey,” he said, “This is Inspector Nate Basso, and I was just wondering if my test results are in yet.”

“No, not yet, but we’ll get them to you soon,” was the response.

“Thanks,” he replied and hung up the phone.

Raina tottered into the bullpen, plopped her purse into her desk drawer, smoothed her hair, and sat down at her desk. “Good morning!” she cheerily announced.

“Good morning, Raina,” Nate replied. “What’s up?”

“Oh, not much. I just was thinking about letting my hair grow out a little bit, what do you think?” she asked as she played with it. Nate stared off into space. “Nate?” Raina prompted.

“What?” he said.

“I just asked you about my hair. I’m thinking about letting it grow out again. What do you think?”

“Um, yeah, I’m sure that would be nice.”

Raina smiled at him. “You really don’t care, do you?” she chuckled.

“Well, now, I wouldn’t say that. I’m a guy. Don’t ask for a guy’s advice on hair.”

“Gotcha.”

A half hour later, after questioning a witness, Nate went to go look up some files when he heard his cell phone go off. “Basso.”

“Nate.....I have your test results,” the lab technician sadly stated.

“And?!” Nate asked impatiently.

“And.....it’s bad news. REALLY bad news. I think you should come down here.”

“Just tell me now!”

“OK, OK, fine. Nate, this is one of the hardest things to say, but.....the test shows that you’re HIV-positive.” Nate’s face went white, and the phone dropped out of his hand, falling to the floor. He slumped against the wall and started sliding to the floor. “Nate? Nate? Inspector?” Nate didn’t reply. He couldn’t think about anything, other than the fact that his world was destroyed, again. He’d convinced himself that CD wouldn’t want him anymore, and wouldn’t want him around their son. Even if she would let him near their son, he probably wouldn’t live long enough to see him grow up.

Jinny heard a loud “whump” and spun around to see what had happened. She saw Nate, glassy-eyed, crumpled on the floor, his side to the file cabinets. “NATE!” she yelled, and rushed over. Nate just stared at the floor. “Are you OK? What’s wrong?” she yelled and checked his pulse. The others in the division rushed over to see what was the matter. Raina saw Nate’s phone on the floor and quickly picked it up.

“Hello?” she said. She discovered what made Nate react the way that he did. She hung up his phone, as he was starting to snap out of it. “OK, guys, back off. I’ll handle it,” she ordered. She grasped his arms and helped him up. “Come on, let’s go sit down.” She led him to the break room and he took a seat. She sat opposite him, but didn’t know what to say.

“I’ve got AIDS,” was all that he could choke out. He was glassy-eyed.

“Maybe the results are wrong.”

“No they’re not. This is my punishment.”

“Nate, don’t say that.”

“I’m telling you, it’s my punishment. Let’s take a look at the last year and a half: First, while the woman that I was going to marry tore herself away from me to save my life, I pouted and threw myself around like a royal jerk. I didn’t try to go after her. I was an *******. Then I go and sleep with some woman whose name I didn’t even know. Then I go and have an affair with a married woman. Somehow, in my sick and twisted mind, I felt that CD deserved it after what she’d done to me. Well, after what I THOUGHT she’d done to me. And, to top it all off, during the whole time when I was in fact doing this all to CD, and not the other way around, she was having and raising our baby, all by herself. My lord, I should be shot.”

“Nate.....don’t say that about yourself. OK, you made some mistakes, but you don’t deserve AIDS, OK? Let’s also take a look at what else happened: When CD got shot, you took off work for as long as it took for her to get healthy again. You were hurt. You screwed up. Lots of people screw up when they get hurt. And now that you have the chance, you are trying to make up for lost time. CD loves you. She’s not going to let you get away again over this. I think that CD loves you more than you give her credit for.”

“I hope so, Raina. I really hope so. I can’t lose her again. I can’t......I’d rather just die than go through that again.”

“Why don’t you get tested again, Nate. It wouldn’t hurt to try, and maybe your results were wrong.”

“I guess not. I just pray that you’re right.”

‘Me too,’ Raina thought to herself and gave a deep sigh.

Thank for the replies, ladies. Here's more.....sorry I'm so evil to post this now, but hey, it makes the story! ;)
--------------------------------------------------------

On his lunch break, Nate went and got retested. No words could describe the dread, fear, sorrow, and anger that he felt. He was angry at the women who could have given him the disease, but mostly he was angry at himself. He knew that he could only blame himself if he did, in fact, contract an STD. He knew better.

That night, he went to see CD and his son again. He was quiet and reserved, and CD could tell them something was greatly bothering him. His mind seemed to be somewhere else. Nate knew that he should tell her, but couldn’t bring himself to do it. Not yet, at least. After all, the results might be wrong.

They put Natie to bed, and then retired to the living room sofa again. CD reclined up against Nate, pulling his arm around her. She had watched him all evening. “What’s wrong?” she whispered, her eyes seriously looking into his.

Nate looked back at her, and felt his heart break. He knew he shouldn’t hide anything from her. She deserved better than that from him....and yet, it was so tough. “Nothing,” he replied.

“Honey, I can tell that something is bothering you. You know that you can share anything in the world with me.”

Nate sighed. “I know....it’s just something that I might have to deal with, but I’m not certain that it’s going to happen, and I don’t want to worry you unnecessarily.”

“Nate,” she said in her low, serious voice—the one that she used when discussing something serious with him. “I am you and you are me. Your problems are my problems. As long as we’re together, nothing else matters.”

“It’s just.....that’s just it. You won’t still want me after I tell you this.” Raina’s words from earlier in the day came back to him and resounded in his head, ‘CD loves you. She’s not going to let you get away again over this. I think that CD loves you more than you give her credit for.’

CD started getting a little worried. What could it possibly be? “Nate, I can promise you right here and now: No matter what you do, no matter what you say, I will always love you, and nothing can change that.”

Nate took a deep breath. “Before I say this, I want you to know that whatever treatment you give me after you hear this I will deserve. If you never want to see me again, I will understand. But I also want you to know, that I never have, and never will, stop loving you.”

“OK.”

“OK......well, I am ashamed to admit this to anyone, let alone you, but while you were gone, I did some bad things that I shouldn’t have. There’s no excuse for what I did, and I accept total blame for it. I slept with other women.” Scared, he looked at CD’s reaction— her face was drawn. She remained silent. “I didn’t love them. Hell, I didn’t even like them. I don’t know why I did it. It was wrong. I have only ever wanted you. I feel like I cheated on you, something that I would never, ever do.”

A tear rolled down CD’s cheek, and she crossed her arms. “But you thought I was gone,” she choked out past the lump in her throat. Although this pained her to hear, she had prepared herself for it.

“But that’s no excuse. I hurt you, and you’re the last person in the world that I want to hurt.” Nate thought back to when CD was struggling with her divorce from Paul, and how he vowed to himself at the time that if they were ever to get together, he would do everything in his power to make up for Paul. Never in a million years did he imagine that he would do almost the exact same thing. He continued. “But that’s not the worst part,” he said, his lip now trembling, and tears brimming his eyes. “I’m not 100% sure, but I think that one of those women may have given me......oh lord, I can’t say it,” he said, burying his face in his hands.

“But that’s not the worst part,” he said, his lip now trembling, and tears brimming his eyes. “I’m not 100% sure, but I think that one of those women may have given me......oh lord, I can’t say it,” he said, burying his face in his hands.

“You don’t have to say it, Nate. I know what you’re talking about,” CD spoke in a low, quiet voice.

Nate got down off the sofa and knelt beside it. He held CD’s hands in his own as two tears dripped down his cheeks. “I’m so, so, so incredibly sorry, CD. I know that that’s not enough, but it’s all I can offer you at this point. I don’t expect you to forgive me now, but......I just beg you to find it in your heart that maybe, someday, before I die, you’ll forgive me.”

Both stared at each other’s contorted, tear-stained faces. This whole new life just seemed too hard to get over, and yet at the same time, it would be harder to go through life without the other. After a moment of silence, CD whispered, “I forgive you.”

Nate was shocked. “You do?”

“I do. I forgive you. You didn’t know. How could you have known.”

“But I.....but I cheated on you. And if I do have this—this THING, I’m no good to you.”

“Oh, Nate.” CD extracted her hands from his grip and crept down onto the floor beside him. “We’ll get through this. We’ve already come this far—there’s no turning back now. We’re meant to be together. Remember back when I was in the hospital, after I got shot? You told me that you couldn’t imagine your life without me, either. You told me that you wanted to spend the rest of your life with me. You said that when I got back on my feet, you wanted to marry me. I promised to you that we would. That means that I promised for better or for worse, in sickness and in health. Well, this is the worse. This is the sickness. If I risked my life to save yours all those times when we were partners, do you really think that something like this would scare me away?”

“But we were partners. That was the job.”

CD rubbed his back. “We were a whole lot more than partners, Nate. I don’t remember Dick or Angela ever leaving flowers on my desk during a rough day or stepping on a bomb detonator in my place. That’s love, baby.” Nate nodded. His head was drooped low. “And also, Nate, you didn’t cheat on me. Please don’t think that.”

Nate looked back at her. “But I did. I slept with other women. I was still in love with you, and you were still faithful to me, but I......I went and did that.”

CD groaned. “OK, Nate. I’m going to say this one more time, and I don’t ever want to have to go over this again, because it’s so hard for me. You didn’t cheat on me. I left. You thought I was gone for good. I know that you’re sorry, and that you would never knowingly cheat on me. Now, please, let’s just move on.”

Nate nodded. “OK.”

They were silent for a moment as they held each other. Then CD leaned in and brought her lips to his. They melded together. It was an intense kiss of love, trust, and commitment. When they pulled back, CD said, “You should get retested to be sure.”

“I did. I mean, I went and had the test taken again today. I’m supposed to find out tomorrow.” Nate sighed, and settled with his back against the sofa. He pulled CD close to him, and she moved beside him. He looked at her, and a tear rolled down his cheek. “I want the test to be wrong so badly, CD. I want to be there for you and the baby, forever. I want us to grow old together. I want us to have a pretty little rose garden wedding, with all our friends and family. I want to make all your dreams come true. I want to watch our son grow up, and I want to take our grandkids to the zoo and the beach. But for this moment, the thing that I am missing most in the world is showing you how much I love you and want you.”

“Oh, Nate.”

“We have waited so long, and yet there’s still something separating us. The last couple of nights, with my resistance, you probably thought that I didn’t want you. I want you to know that nothing could be further from the truth.”

CD studied his face and nodded. “Well, let’s just pray that one day, all of our dreams will come true.” She laid her head on his shoulder, and laid her hand on his chest. Then she said the words that Nate had been dying to hear since the conversation began: “I love you.”

Thanks for all the replies! Awesome! Here's all that I have left at this time---I have to wait for spring break before I can write more. Enjoy!
----------------------------------------------------------------

All throughout the next morning, Nate anxiously waited for his lab results. He still clung to the hope that the results might be different this time, but had a sick feeling in his stomach that they were true. He tried to shove those negative thoughts from his mind, but they kept reappearing. At lunchtime, he checked at the lab to see if the answer was in. It wasn’t yet, and Nate trudged back to his work.

A little after 3, Nate and Raina finished talking to a witness for their case. Nate checked his watch and then said to Raina, “I’m heading down to the lab. I can’t take it anymore. I’m just going to camp out there and wait until I get my answer.”

Raina nodded. “Sure, sure......no problem. I’ll see you later.” She patted him on the arm, and he turned and left the bullpen.

Nate approached the counter. By now, the staff knew him quite well. “Hey, are my results in yet?” he asked.

“Um, I’m not sure, let me check,” the desk clerk replied. She checked her computer, but it didn’t show it yet. “It’s not in the system, but I’ll go ask. I know how important this is to you.”

“Thanks.”

She disappeared into the back room for a minute, and then reappeared with a perplexed look on her face.

Nate’s heart sank at her expression. “What?” he whispered.

“Well, the good news is that the HIV test came back negative.”

“Oh my god!!!!” Nate exclaimed in relief, clutching his hands to his chest. He had never been more relieved in his life than he was at this moment. “Thank you thank you thank you thank you,” he whispered to the sky.

“The only weird thing is,” the clerk continued, “is.....what blood type are you, Inspector?”

“Um, I think I’m type O, why?”

“Well, your results from the last two days came back with different blood types.”

Nate was confused. “What do you mean? I have two blood types?”

“Well, if you do, you’re a medical marvel,” she replied with a chuckle. “Call up the Guiness people. No.....what I mean is, yesterday, the test said that you had type A blood. Today’s test says that you have type O blood.”

Nate furrowed his brow and thought. ‘What the hell?’ he thought. “That’s weird.....how could that be?”

“The only thing that I can guess is that something got switched with someone else somewhere along the line. Lab errors are rare, but they do happen occasionally.”

“Yeah, yeah, I guess they do.......um, well, thanks, and you have a beautiful day. I know I sure will!” Nate replied. He grinned from ear to ear. He was puzzled, but ecstatic. Nothing could hamper his happiness now. He had his woman, he could let himself go completely and totally with her, and not have to fear. As he walked out of the office, he felt as though he was floating on cloud nine. Thoughts and ideas starting compiling in his mind. He wanted to make everything so very romantic for CD.

Nate walked back to his desk and got out the phonebook. He looked up a florist’s number and dialed. “Um, hi, is it possible to have an order delivered before 5 today?” he asked. “Yeah, a rush charge is OK, I just would really like to have it delivered this afternoon.” He told the florist to send the orchids to CD’s office, and then he described what he would like written on the card:

“CD,
My sun rises and sets on you.
Let’s share the sunset tonight.
Meet the baby and me at
Alamo Square at 6.
All my love forever,
Nate”

Then he found Raina and told her that her the good news, and that obviously, he was leaving early. Raina gave him a knowing wink, patted his arm, and sent him on his way.

Spring break, so....
------------------------------------------------

Kate looked out her door and noticed Nate telling Raina something, putting on his coat, and leaving. She had noticed that Nate hadn’t been around much that week, but had hoped that she was just imagining it. She caught Raina’s attention, and motioned her into her office. “What’s up, Captain?” Raina asked and leaned over the chairs.

“Where’s Nate going?” Kate asked.

“Oh, he had to leave a little early. He’s not feeling too well today.”

Kate nodded, with a puzzled look on her face. “Is something up with him?”

“What do you mean?” Raina asked, with as innocent a look on her face as she could manage.

“He’s just been acting a little unusual this week. I don’t know. Maybe I’ve been imagining it.”

“Hmm, well, I haven’t noticed anything unusual,” Raina replied. She reasoned with herself, ‘I’m not lying. What he’s been doing is VERY usual for having just been reunited with his girlfriend,’ she thought.

“OK....well, thanks. You can get back to work now.”

Raina nodded and went back to her desk.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CD was working at her desk, concentrating on her computer. She heard a knock on her open door and looked up. There was a delivery guy holding a clear vase of beautiful orchids. Her eyes lit up. “Can I help you?” she asked.
“Are you CD DeLorenzo?” he asked.
“Yeah.”
“Then these are for you,” he replied and set them down on her desk.
“Wow, thank you!” she gushed as she savored the sight and fragrance of the flowers. “Here, let me give you your tip,” she said and reached for her wallet.
“All taken care of,” the guy replied and turned and left.
A grin spread across CD’s face. She knew exactly who it was from, but she opened the card anyway. When she read its message, her heart felt so full that it would burst. She knew, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that she had made the right decision about Nate. Even if he did test positive, she knew that she couldn’t live without him again.
~~~~~~~~

CD tried to finish our her work day, but was too excited to think about much anything else than Nate. That man still made her heart thump, her stomach flutter, and her knees buckle. Finally, five o’clock rolled around, and she called it a day. She rushed home to change and freshen up before dinner, and then drove down to Alamo Square just in time to meet her two guys at 6.

She parked and got out of her car, unsure of exactly where to go. Instinct kicked in, however, and she decided to go look for a certain picnic table....and that is where she found Nate, chasing their crawling baby around the table.. CD couldn’t help but just stand there, watching and grinning, her heart overflowing with contentment. Her mind flashed on the first time they had sat at this very table, nearly two years ago now....and now, here she and Nate were back, with their child.

Soon Nate looked up and noticed her. He stopped in his tracks, and a smile spread across his face. Never losing eye contact, he picked up Natie and greeted her with a long, heartfelt kiss. “I see you got my message,” he murmured into her hair as he hugged her.

CD grinned. “Yes, I sure did. Nate, thank you so much....for all of this.”

“Oh, it’s nothing. I just thought it would be nice to eat outside for a change, especially since the weather was so nice today.”

CD took Natie from his dad’s arms, and greeted him with hugs and kisses and smiles and talked to him in her mommy voice. Then she turned back to Nate, who was arranging plates on the table. He had already draped a plastic picnic tablecloth over it, and set out some napkins and plastic flatware. “What did you bring for dinner?” she asked.

“What, you’re not into plastic?” he chuckled.

“I gave it up for lent,” she chuckled back.

“You’re not Catholic, CD.” CD just shrugged and smirked. “Well, you’re in luck, then, because I happened to bring some real food. How do Italian beef sandwiches, chips, and cole slaw sound?

“Sounds great,” CD replied with a smile. She now held Natie at her hip.

“And, of course, there will be a surprise dessert.”

“Chocolate, I’m guessing?”

“You got it,” Nate replied with a grin.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

They sat down and ate their dinner, quietly chatting about their day and frequently stopping to feed the baby his supper. Nate could hardly contain his excitement about his awesome news, but he wanted to wait for just the right moment to tell her. He didn’t want them to be distracted by the baby, so after they finished eating he suggested that they put him in the stroller and take a walk around the square, in the hopes that he would fall asleep. The sun had almost set, and a pinkish/purplish haze cast over the night sky. The air was getting brisk, but nothing that buttoning up their jackets couldn’t fix. Nate pushed the stroller, and CD walked along beside him, with her arm around his waist.

“You seem to be in such a good mood tonight, sweetie,” CD commented.

“I AM,” he agreed and faced her with a look of joy. “I need to tell you something, that I think you would really like to know.”

“What?” she asked, hoping against hopes to hear what she wanted to hear.

Nate took a deep breath. “I got my results back.....I’m fine, CD. I don’t have it.”

CD’s eyes opened wide, and her mouth opened, but she couldn’t say anything. She was too overwhelmed with relief and joy. “You’re sure?”

“I’m sure,” he smiled. “I’m free, CD. I’m free.”

“Oh, that’s what YOU think,” she responded and stopped the stroller. Then she wrapped her arms around him and her mouth crashed against his. Nate quickly responded to the kiss and ran his hands over her back as he kissed her. Their lips parted and their tongues found each other. CD’s fingers glided up to Nate’s head as she pulled him closer against herself. Time and the rest of the world stopped around them....

Finally, when they came up for air, Nate remembered that they were standing on a public sidewalk, for the whole world to see. “Baby, let’s go home,” he moaned into her neck. “There’s nothing in this world that I want more than you.” CD agreed, of course, and they quickly packed up and headed for home.

Natie fell asleep in the car on the way home, and CD carried him into his bedroom and laid him down for the night. Nate came up behind her as she was tucking the baby in, and watched them. He gently encircled her with his arms, and CD looked at him with pleased surprise. She turned, placing her hands on his shoulders, closed her eyes, and rested her forehead against his. Nate’s hands glided up her torso to her chin, lifted it, and softly kissed her lips. “I love you,” he breathed.

“I love you, too,” she replied and kissed him back.

Nate took her hand and led her out to the hallway dividing the bedrooms and shut the door behind them. CD backed up against the wall while unbuttoning Nate’s shirt. She kissed him again, and then slid the shirt off his shoulders. It fell to the floor. Nate’s hands eagerly roamed her curves, and then slid up under her sweater. He pulled her sweater up and over her head, and it joined his shirt on the floor. CD wrapped her arms around Nate’s neck, but then moved down to his ass as her kisses trailed down his chest. Nate responded by moving his lips to her neck, and gently sucking on it. That tantalized CD’s senses, and she threw her head back and wrapped her legs around Nate’s waist. Nate grabbed firm hold of her around the middle, and carried her the short distance from the hallway to the bed. He laid her down, climbing on top of her. He swiftly disposed of his pants and socks, remaining in just his boxers. He kissed down CD’s body, forming an invisible line down the middle of her torso, until he was stopped at her waistline. He looked into CD’s eyes, and her face just caught his breath for a moment. He hesitated, and then unzipped her jeans and pulled them down and off of her. After kicking the jeans to the floor, his hands traveled back up her body, found the clasp on her bra, and removed that as well. His mouth was immediately drawn to her breasts and tasted them, one by one. CD gripped the back of his head as the pleasure surged through her body. She turned and flipped so that she was now on top. Her hands glided over his muscular shoulders, chest, and stomach, and then moved down to the waist on his boxers. She gripped them and pulled them off. “I’d forgotten how hot you are,” she purred with a sultry grin.

Nate wrapped his arms around her and smiled. “Well, that’ll never happen again.”

CD smiled again, and then moved her fingers down to give Nate a surprise.

“Ohhhhhh CeeeeeeeDeeeeee.....” he instantly moaned at her touch. In just a matter of seconds, he could feel himself on the verge. He quickly grabbed her hands, and rolled her beneath him again. “My turn,” he said.

His head disappeared down beneath the covers. CD squeezed his hands as he delighted her. “I missed this so much,” she whispered. A tear came to her eye. “I missed you so much.” Her breath became heavy, and she climaxed fairly quickly. Nate brought his head back up to meet hers and kissed her.

“I missed you more,” he said. “You are the most incredible woman in the world.” CD smiled and kissed him again. Nate immediately drew his fingers back down to her sweet spot, and she soon nodded to him to proceed. They joined as one, at long last, both pleasing each other beyond their wildest expectations.

Nate collapsed on top of her. They laid there, still, just catching their breath and savoring the moment and the feel of each other’s bare skin against their own. They had waited so very long for this.....they never wanted the moment to end. Nate rolled off of her and laid beside her, wrapping his arms around her and nuzzling her neck. “I love you,” he whispered.

“I love you, too,” she whispered back. She let out a contented sigh, and caressed his chest and arms. She looked into his eyes. “Remind me again how I could have possibly left?”

“Uh, as I recall, it had something to do with saving our lives.”

“Man, I don’t know, I think it would have been worth it to risk it,” she laughed.

They fell silent again for a moment. Then Nate looked into her blue eyes. “Pinch me so I know that I’m not dreaming.”

“You’re not dreaming, baby. You’re not dreaming.” That answer satisfied Nate. He took her hand and intertwined her fingers with his. Then CD said, “I want you to move in.”

Nate remained silent as he tried to think of an answer. CD immediately grew worried, as she had not expected any answer from Nate other than an immediate affirmation. “I don’t think so, CD,” he finally replied.

CD’s face fell to a look of dismay, and she inched away from him. “You don’t think so?” she repeated after him.

Nate shook his head. “We did that once before. It left uncertainty. I want to know for SURE, this time.”

“Know what for sure?” CD asked, confused.

“That we’re always going to be together....that we’ll always be......” Nate smoothed his hair back. “Oh, hell, CD, I’m not good at this.” He propped himself up on his elbow and gazed at her. “Let’s get married.” He nervously watched CD’s face, awaiting her response.

CD felt such relief after hearing Nate’s statement. He had finally said what she had been dreaming of hearing for the last two years. She knew that they still had a lot of crap to deal with, but at least they could do it together now. Her face lit up as her smile extended from ear to ear. “I thought you’d never ask,” she giggled and pulled the covers over their heads. Nate giggled as well, and soon the muffled sounds of two lovers could be heard yet again.

The next day, Nate went and got his hair cut, restoring it to his regular style. He now looked like the old Nate again. He came back to work from his lunchbreak, after getting his hair cut, and he knew that the time had come to start telling people. He also knew that the person he had to start with was Kate. He walked to her office, knocked on her open door, and waited. She was on the phone, but she motioned to him to sit down. He took one of the chairs opposite her.

When Kate hung up, she looked at him with surprised eyes and lifted her eyebrows. She hadn’t seen his hair that short in a year and a half.. “What’s up?” she asked.

“Uh, Captain, I’ve got to discuss something personal and important with you, if you have a moment.”

“OK, shut the door and we’ll talk,” she replied.

Nate did and then turned back to her. “You’ve probably noticed that I haven’t been the same this week. I know I haven’t been here as much, and I’ve probably seemed to be somewhere else, even when I am here.”

Kate nodded. “Can’t argue with that,” she agreed.

“I know, and I’m sorry about it, and I can promise you that everything is cool now. But I need to tell you the reason for why I’ve been acting so weird.....”

“Nate, it’s OK.”

“No, I think you would really like to know this,” he interrupted. He sighed. “I don’t know quite how to tell you this in a way that won’t shock you, but.....” a smile crept across his face. “CD came back.”

-------------------------------------------

He sighed. “I don’t know quite how to tell you this in a way that won’t shock you, but.....” a smile crept across his face. “CD came back.”

First Kate’s face looked shocked, but then turned to amused. She took off her glasses and smirked at him. “Yeah, and people only smoke dope for medicinal purposes,” she chuckled. “Good try on the April Fool’s joke.”

Nate wasn’t amused, however. “I’m serious,” he replied. “I got home from the wedding on Saturday, and there was a message on my voice mail from her, saying that she needed to talk to me. So we got together to talk, one thing led to another, and.....well....”

Now Kate went back to shocked. “You’re serious,” she whispered and stared at him.

Nate nodded. “You know I wouldn’t joke about something like that.”

“No, I guess you wouldn’t,” she agreed. “Is she....is she OK?”

Nate nodded. “Yeah, she’s good. She lives in North Beach now...well, WE live in North Beach now,” he said, and Kate raised her eyebrows again at the last remark. “She works for a securities company now. She’s done so much. I’m so proud of her.” Nate stared off into space, caught up in his own thoughts. His face seemed to glow, just talking about her.

This, of course, did not go unnoticed by the Captain. NOTHING went unnoticed by the Captain. “You said that “we” live in North Beach?”

“Huh?”

“You said “we.” Do you mean that you’ve moved in together again?” Nate nodded. “You’re back together.” Nate nodded again. “Well, I guess that explains the hair, then,” she chuckled.

“What are you talking about?”

“Your hair, Nate. It hasn’t been that short since CD left.”

“Oh, yeah.” Nate hadn’t even noticed that pattern, but it made sense now that he thought about it.

“She... she just reappeared as quickly as she left? Any reasons?”

“Oh, there were reasons.....LOTS of reasons,” he replied and sighed. “It’s complicated....but you remember the Ray Sanchez/Liz Rue case?” Kate nodded. “Well, it’s a long story, but let’s just say that it didn’t end with Liz’s death.” Kate looked confused. Nate added, “CD did what she had to do.”

“Was she in danger?”

Nate looked at his shoes and hesitated before he answered. “Yeah. She was.”

“I should have known.....I should have thought......” Kate trailed off.

“We all should have known,” Nate replied.

“But she’s not in danger anymore?” Kate asked, looking at him quizzically.

Nate shook his head, and then smiled again. “No, she’s not. And I’m going to make sure that she’s never in that type of situation again.”

Kate gave a half, sideways smile through her pursed lips. “You’re a good man, Nate. And I’m glad that CD is back and then you two are together again. I’ve seen how much she means to you.”

Nate nodded. “And this time, it WILL be permanent. We’re getting married.” He then thought about telling her about Natie, but then reasoned that if would be a fun surprise for everyone. He chuckled to himself at the visualization in his head. “Well, I’m going to go tell Jinny and Magda, now....CD wants to come by on Monday to see everyone. Does that work for you?”

“Of course!” Kate replied with a smile. “I’d cancel a meeting with the mayor if I had to, to see CD again.” Nate turned to leave. “And Nate?”

“Yeah?”

“Congratulations.” Her face lit up, and she raised her glasses back up to her face.

Nate smiled back, and headed back out to the bullpen to share the good news.

When five o’clock came, CD called Nate. She was driving, on her way to pick up the baby from the sitter’s. “Hey, babe,” Nate said and smiled as he picked up his cell phone.

“I do hope you were expecting me,” CD laughed.

“No, I know a lot of women whose names on the caller ID show up as “DeLorenzo, Ca” Nate chuckled back. “And I’m sleeping with all of them.”

“Oh, Nate, shut up,” CD giggled. “I was just calling you about our plans tonight.”

“Do you want me to meet you somewhere? Or pick something up?”

“Hmmm, I hadn’t really thought about food....unless you count pancakes for breakfast,” she purred.

That purring voice of CD’s did awful things to him. “Breakfast, huh?” he replied, pleased.

“Yeah, I’m trying to think of how to get Natie to fall asleep early tonight,” CD jokingly answered.

“OK, well.....I’ll be home soon.”

“I can’t wait.”

Nate picked up some Chinese anyway, and went home to his fiancé and baby. After some coaxing, Natie finally did fall asleep. When his parents were finally alone, they retreated to their bedroom and made love.

~~~~~
That weekend, Nate and CD moved most of Nate’s possessions into CD’s apartment. The few things that didn’t make sense to move, like Nate’s bed, was left there and they would give it away. Nate couldn’t wait to get rid of that bed. He never wanted to see it again, after all that had happened on it.....he wanted that sorry chapter of his life closed. And it was.
Sunday night, both exhausted, they opted to stay in. The baby was stressed enough from the move as it was, and had missed his nap that afternoon, so a restful evening was in order. CD made grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup for dinner while Nate bathed and dressed the baby for bed. This was all such a new thing for him, but at the same time, one of the most fulfilling experiences of his life. When Natie was all fresh and clean and smelling of baby powder and in his little basketball flannel pajamas (CD was hoping to nudge him towards a basketball scholarship at an early age ;) ), Nate placed him on his shoulder and carried him to his high chair for dinner. Nate strapped him in and replaced the tray, now being acquainted with how it worked.
CD brought the steaming plates and bowls to the table, and they sat down to eat. CD gave Natie a half a sandwich of his own. “Are you sure he’s ready for that yet, honey?” Nate asked.
“Oh, sure, he’ll just gum it. Besides, he’s got your appetite, and the baby stuff just isn’t cutting it anymore.”
Nate smiled. “But he’s perfect, just like you.”
“Oh, Nate, stop it,” CD replied but smiled and blushed. She took a spoonful of soup.
They ate in silence for a minute, until Nate said with a smile, “It’s our one-week anniversary.”
CD thought for a moment, and then grinned back. “Why, yes it is....well, our first week the second time around, that is.”
Nate held his water glass up. “Well, then.....to us.”
“To us,” CD repeated, and clinked glasses with him.
~~~~~~

A few hours later found Nate and CD intertwined with each other and the bedsheets. They laid in their soft afterglow, completely enamored with each other and at peace with the entire world around them. “I love you,” Nate said and kissed CD’s shoulder.

“I love you, too, Nate,” CD replied and kissed his stomach.

Trying not to disrupt the moment, Nate quietly opened the drawer of the bedstand with one hand and reached inside. He pinched the small piece of jewelry between his thumb and forefinger, and then smoothly brought his hand back over to CD’s left hand, that was draped across his chest. He slid a diamond ring onto CD’s ring finger, and CD immediately jumped.

“What’s that?” she demanded, before looking at her hand. She sat up, looked at her hand, and gasped happily. “Oh Nate....” she whispered.

“I thought I’d better not waste time getting this on your finger THIS time around,” Nate offered. He couldn’t help but smile with satisfaction.

CD was practically speechless. “Oh my gosh, it’s so beautiful, Nate. It’s absolutely gorgeous.” She held up her hand to the light to admire it. As she rotated her hand and fingers, the diamond sparkled as it caught in the light.

“So we’re official now, right?”

“We’re official, love,” CD replied. She wrapped both arms around his neck and kissed him. Then she looked confused. “But how did you ever find the time to buy this?” she asked. “We’ve been together every spare moment since you asked me.”

Nate smiled sheepishly. “I bought it 20 months ago, CD.”

CD was stunned. “You did?” He nodded in reply. “And you kept it all this time?”

Nate nodded again. “To have gotten rid of it would have been to have given up hope.....even though it probably doesn’t sound like it....I never gave up hope that we would find each other again someday.”

CD sighed contentedly, and laid down with him again. “Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this.”

“Lucky for us that we didn’t have to wait that long,” Nate replied. He wrapped his arms around her, and they soon nodded off to sleep.

~ Monday afternoon at the Division ~

“Now, nobody make a huge deal and overwhelm her, OK?” Nate instructed everyone at the Felony Divison. Everyone was there—Kate, Jinny, Magda, Raina, and everyone else that knew CD. Everyone was so incredibly excited to be seeing her again, and extremely curious. They had been filled in on the basics of what was going on, but many of the details were still being speculated amongst the group.

The only person that didn’t know who CD was, or what was going on, was the new officer, Stacy Reynolds. She was being her usual nosy, obnoxious self, and poked herself into the discussion. “Don’t overwhelm who?” she asked.

“Uh.....” Nate replied, not knowing what to say. He looked at Jinny for help.

“Let’s take a little walk, Stace,” Jinny said, and guided her out to the hallway.

“What’s going on? Who’s coming?” she asked again.

Jinny stopped once they were in the hallway. “Here’s the drill, Stace. Nate’s old partner is coming to visit the Division. She and Nate just got engaged last week. We haven’t seen her in a year and a half, and a lot has happened to her since then. So it would be really great if you just minded your own business when she visits, OK?” Jinny said, telling her more than asking her.

Stacy looked wounded. “Why? I’m just curious about the what the big fuss is. I mean, you’d think that she’s the only partner that Nate has ever had. I don’t see what the big deal is.”

Jinny just looked at her, annoyed. “You know what? I need you to run an errand for me. Right now.”

“Wh—“ Stacy replied, as Jinny walked to her desk, picked up a cd player, and plopped it into Stacy’s arms.

“There’s an address taped to this. Please take it back to its owner.”

“Uh.....OK.....” Stacy replied, and started walking towards the elevator.

Jinny walked back into the bullpen. “OK, NOW let’s have ourselves a reunion!” she said happily. Everyone laughed. She turned to Nate. “Did she say when she was coming?”

CD stepped into the doorway of the division, Natie in tow. No one noticed her at first, though. “Talking about me?” she asked, a big grin on her face. Everyone turned to look, happily shocked expressions on their faces. “Hey, guys. I’m back!”

“CD!” the whole gang exclaimed at once. Kate, Jinny, Magda, and Raina rushed up to her, and they had a group hug.

“Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh,” Kate whispered and stared at little Natie. “Is he....?” she asked.

“Yeah, he’s mine,” CD confirmed. Her face was lit up like a Christmas tree. “Nate Jr. We call him Natie.”

“Awww, let me see him!” Kate cooed, and extended her arms to him. CD placed him in her arms, and Kate cradled him close to her chest.

“That is one beautiful baby, CD,” Magda added, smiling at him. “And we all thought that you would be the LAST person to ever be a parent. Well, except for my partner, here,” she chuckled, and elbowed Jinny.

“Yeah, Nate told me about your new little family! That’s amazing, Jin!” CD said.

“Yeah, just call us the Cleavers,” Jinny laughed. “Speaking of which.....” Jinny looked at CD, and then to Nate, who was busy passing his baby around for everyone to see, “things seem to be going well for you lately!”

CD smiled. “Yeah, they have.”

“Do you have a date for the wedding set yet?”

“Oh, gosh, no, not yet. This has just all been happening so fast as it is.....I need some time to get settled into my new routine before I get started on wedding plans....and also, I’m not entirely sure that we’re even going to have a formal wedding.”

“What? Why?” Raina asked. “Weddings are SO beautiful!”

“Yeah, they are, but they’re also expensive, and we’ve both had big weddings before.....and I mean, look, we even have a baby.”

“So?” Raina prompted.

“AND....I just don’t think we want to wait as long as it would take to plan a wedding, before we get married. I mean, with our history, the sooner the better!” she chuckled.

CD and Natie stayed and visited for a while, and then Nate joined them for lunch out.

Meanwhile, a few blocks over, Stacy parked in front of the apartment building where she was to deliver the CD player. She got out of the car, picked up the CD player, and stepped away from the car without looking. Poor Stacy. She never had a chance—she never saw that bus coming.

~ 2 Months Later ~

“I do,” CD replied. Her face was shining at Nate as he held her hands.

“I do,” Nate answered as well.

“I know pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride,” the judge said.

Nate and CD’s lips softly met for a brief but tender kiss. “I love you,” Nate whispered.

“I love you, too.”

~~~~~
Although Nate and CD insisted on just a simple ceremony at city hall, their friends from the division made them a compromise. CD and Nate flew to Hawaii for a long weekend honeymoon while Natie stayed with Jinny, Hank, and little John. Then, the next Saturday night, Kate, Jinny, and Raina threw them a reception at a nice restaurant on the wharf. It was also a birthday celebration for Natie, as it was his first birthday that day.
~ 6 Months Later ~
The new Basso family was taking a stroll through a park early one evening. CD pushed the stroller, and Nate walked along beside her. The autumn air was cool and crisp, but the sun was still above the horizon and lit up the sky in shades of pink and peach. Nate looked at it. “Looks like it’s going to be warmer tomorrow,” he mumbled aloud.
“How do you figure?” CD asked.
“The colors of the sunset usually portray what the weather tomorrow will be like. A pink sky means it’ll be warm tomorrow.” He smiled at her, and they walked in silence for a few moments.
CD watched him, waiting for the right moment to tell him. He seemed to be in a happy mood tonight. She took a deep breath. “Nate, you still want more kids, right?”
He looked at her with a little concern. Although they agreed that they both wanted to have at least one more baby, he still worried that she wouldn’t want to after all. “Well, sure....I love Natie. And I missed so much of his life.”
“Then you’ll be happy by what my doctor told me today.”
Nate stared at her in surprise. “You mean....”
CD nodded and grinned. “I’m pregnant.”
Nate’s face lit up like a Christmas tree, and he wrapped his arms around her and hugged her. “You are?!?!” he exclaimed. CD nodded happily and wrapped her arms around her neck. They kissed. “How far along are you?” he asked.
“Just three weeks. A long ways to go.”
Nate placed his arm around her shoulders and they continued on their walk. “I can’t wait,” Nate replied.
CD smiled at him again. “Me neither.”
CD stopped and strained to see Natie’s face. She was wondering if he’d fallen asleep yet. He had, but all of a sudden she felt sharp pains shoot up through her insides. “Oh God,” she whispered. She was bent over, clutching her abdomen.
“CD! What’s wrong?!” Nate asked, suddenly scared.
“I don’t know...but it really, really hurts.”
Nate rushed CD to the emergency room. By this point, she was heavily bleeding. They admitted her for testing. Nate was a basket case. This was all too familiar to him. She had lost so much blood, that there was talk of a transfusion. She looked pale. “The baby,” CD weakly whispered to him.
“Everything is going to be fine, sweetheart,” he tried to soothe her. He knew that he didn’t sound very convincing, but it was the best that he could muster considering the circumstances. Nate looked at her, and she didn’t look very good. He called for the nurse. “I think my wife is ready for that blood now!” he yelled out.
CD passed out, still holding Nate’s hand.
CD’s eyes opened to Nate’s heartbroken face. She looked at her hand, and it was held by his.
“You’re still alive!” Nate whispered. “Don’t worry, the paramedics are on their way. Just please stay with me....please don’t leave me now.”
CD was confused. “Paramedics? Leave you? What are you talking about, Nate?”
“You’ve been shot, CD. And it looks like the marshal did it. But it also looks like you were able to take care of her.”
“I don’t understand.....the baby.....” she trailed off.
Nate studied her face. “Baby?” he wondered to himself.
By then, though, the paramedics arrived and whisked CD off to the hospital. Nate stayed with her the whole ride. Several hours later, after surgery and a brief recovery period, CD laid sleeping in her hospital room. Nate barely slept at all that night, but dozed in and out while propped up in the chair beside her bed. When CD awoke, it all came back to her. She knew what had happened, and what hadn’t now. It had all been a dream. Just a dream. Two and a half years hadn’t passed. She and Nate weren’t married. They hadn’t had Natie. And, most importantly, she had never left Nate. The last thing she remembered was going to the marshal’s apartment, who then pulled a gun on her and shot her. She peeked under her hospital gown, to discover that her entire midsection was wrapped in gauze. She was alive. As she faded out the night before, she hadn’t known if she would be found before it was too late. Then she looked over at Nate. That sweet, dear man. She loved him so incredibly much. She’d loved him before, but since her dream, she knew just how much he meant to her. This was the man that she would spend the rest of her life with.
CD noticed that her tongue was parched. The only thing she could find to drink was Nate’s half-full bottle of Mountain Dew that was beside his hand on the nightstand. CD picked it up and took a long drink. The movement awakened Nate. You could see the relief wash over his face.
“You’re awake,” he whispered and smiled.
“I am,” she replied. “Who found me?”
“I did....when you were a no-show for dinner, I knew that something had happened. I went to the hospital, because I figured you were stuck there, seeing Gina. Then, I found out the same thing you did. So I looked for you, where I figured you’d gone.”
“I love you, Nate.”
Nate was astonished. He’d never heard those words from her before..though he’d been dreaming of her saying them for a long time. He narrowed his eyes. “I love you, too, CD.” He kissed her softly and tenderly. He knelt on the floor beside her, to be as close as possible to her. He held her hand in his.
~~~~~

CD didn’t share her dream with him right away, but she didn’t waste any time, either. They married three months later, surrounded by their families and friends. CD went back to work at the division. They had their two babies, and they all lived happily ever after.

THE END

THANK YOU THANK YOU to all of you who have supported my fic writing over the last couple of years. I have truly enjoyed myself writing it, and I'm glad I was able to entertain some of you with my writing. This will most likely be my last TD fic. As a working college student, I don't have time for much else. It gets harder every year. Also, although I'm still a fan of TD and CD/Nate, my heart just isn't in it anymore. I think I've covered everything that I wanted to cover, and I've moved on to other things. But my fics will live on....so enjoy. :)

that was so wonderful, tara. i wanted to wait until today to read this so i would be awake and fully appreciate it. i'm so glad i did. that fic was wonderful. i, too, have lost the time and effort that it took to write. i actually started a fic to present to you as ur graduation gift a few weeks back............even though it was for you, i had to stop trying b/c i just didn't have the touch anymore.... :( it really sucked, so the end lol.

these boards have been wonderful for the simple fact of meeting new people. i never had the intention of making friends here (i just wanted to read fic!), but i did! i never would've gotten through a lot of things i did get through, and that all started out b/c of mainly cat. and then michelle. and then cat talked about this snowfall girl... :) good thing she did b/c she approved, so i thought i would too. met a very very nice girl (as well as 2 wonderful sisters!!), and then i got to meet you all in PERSON. i never would've thought that would've happened!!!!! love you tons and i'll see you next tuesday :)

awwww....you are such a good friend. That really touched me. :) And I'm really touched that you were going to write a fic for me.....it's even OK that you weren't able to finish it, b/c just knowing that you wanted to do that for me is enough.

p.s.: back when I just lurked the boards, you were always my favorite. You were MY role model. ;) the first time I met you in person, it was almost like meeting a celebrity.

And thank you to Swimgirl and Laney, too, for your sweet comments. I'm really glad that you enjoyed it. :cool: :wave:
