They had a story on this black guy who was killing a lot of women in Detroit & Houston. He might be gettin out of prison soon. He killed about 15-20 women in the 80's. He told the police the reason why he killed these women is because they had evil in their eyes. He's a f***in nut. I'm gettin so sick & tired of criminals being let out of prison. Let them bas***ds die in prison cause i feel anytime somebody kills somebody, their life should be taken. The justice system really sucks & they need to stop wasting taxpayers money on these criminals by lettin them go to court & have a trial when they're already guilty. If i was in charge of the justice system, i would give every a**hole the electric chair everytime they kill somebody.

Come on, don't you think there was a better way to express your thoughts? This is one of the reasons we can't discuss politics on this board anymore. People don't know how to let go of their passions in order to have a reasoned argument.

Let me try anyway. The justice system isn't solving problems. It's trying to curb the effect of crime - not the cause of crime. Society at large is to blame for people killing other people (not just the individual). So, yes, people should go to prison; but no, they should not be killed. In fact, the United States still has to get rid of the death penalty because it has signed and ratified the UN Convention on Civil and Political Rights. Instead of increasing security, governments should be doing their best in improving education and reducing inequalities. Certainly there are people out there who have mental problems and have inexplicable desires to engage in violence - but if they had the same resources provided to the rest of society, they would be able to get help before they did anything drastic.

So you're saying that people who kill somebody shouldn't be given the electric chair? Are u crazy? I think u are. The prisons wouldn't be so crowded if the criminals were given the electric chair for the crimes they commit. It's not fair that killers should walk the streets & people should be in fear. The streets would be a lot safer if killers were killed in prison cause i guarantee u when they get out of prison, they'll kill again cause they don't have that many options. Jobs don't wanna hire killers when they get out of prison cause supervisors feel like killers/criminals shouldn't be given a 2nd chance.

Are you saying that most people that commit a crime have the mental problem and that is justifiable? That they can't be punished appropriately for the reason of insanity? Being in prison doesn't rehab anyone; even the worst criminal. Something more drastic has to be done in order for the wanabees to learn their lesson and don't commit a crime. Taking little courses in jail and doing community service is not an option either! What would be an 'appropriate' punishment for a criminal then?

Oh get off your high horse and quit acting like an ******* to everyone who isn't as "intelligent" as you. You don't know what kind of situations people have been through in their lives, so you have no right to call them out because they're not up to par with your standards. I seriously believe that the prisons wouldn't be overcrowded if prisoners were given the electric chair & i bet u if people started seeing that this is what happens to prisoners when they kill people, it would make people think twice about killing someone. Just the thought of having electric shock waves going through your body when you're in a electric chair isn't something i don't think a prisoner wants to experience.

You're just simply wrong IT. The prison population isn't loaded with people convicted of murder. As I told you, that is a miniscule portion of the prison population. As for the threat of the death sentence scaring potential killers off from doing their deed: all realistic eviidence shows that it has no appreciable effect whatsoever.

So let's fry them all, who cares that there could be innocent people in prison trying to prove they are innocent? Let's just kill them first and ask questions later?

There's alot of innocent people in prison there was a study about it not too long ago, lot more than we think there are in prison.

I'm not saying all are innocent, but the ones who do the really heinous crimes should be put to death, but that teaches them nothing, that's the easy way out, life in prison is more punishment IMO

So it's basically societies fault that Jerry Dalumer(?) killed all the people?? That is utterly insane. Did you ever think that maybe there are just some bad people out there?? I hate to get political but this is the same group that is blaming America for 9/11!! There are poor people in this country that have very little opportunities available to them yet they don't go out killing people. There are some very well off people in this country that have killed people. You can't blame society for this! How a person was raised goes along way in decideing what kind of person they will be. It starts at home with the parents.

How long should you let them prove their innocense?? What about the ones who commited the "heinous crimes"?? Why should they not be given the same amount of time as the others to prove their innocense?? There has to be a time limit. With todays DNA technology cases are getting to be more cut and dry. There probably are some innocent people in prision for murder but how many murderers are going to admit that they did kill someone. A good line from the Shawshank Redempion(?)-"everyone is innocent in here". I think murderers should be put to death. If you believe in God and the afterlife-then what is in store for someone who broke one of the commandments is going to be alot worse than any prision.

opinion on this matter. His own opinion is his own business.

Number two-I agree that some of these murderers deserve the
death penalty and I also agree that our justice system is
sometimes flawed, but that is no reason for us as american
citizens to ignore the law and ignore due process. When we
do that, we are defying the constitution of the United States

I don't blame you all for calling me insane. But I do think society is PARTLY to blame for a lot of the murders committed. Taking away somebody's life is inherently wrong - but (sorry about the cliche) two wrongs don't make a right. The whole eye for an eye thing doesn't work for me. Not only because, as Angela Micelli pointed out, some people who are convicted of murder turn out to be innocent, but also because I honestly think people can change. If a person commits a murder because she feels this is the only way she can change her horrible life situation, in the future she may learn how to behave differently (especially if she is given other opportunities in life). I just don't see how killing off people will solve anything. And society does affect the crime rate of a country. There are countries out there with much more equitable societies that have a significantly lower murder rate.
I'd rather see governments try to reduce inequalities and make it harder for people to purchase guns before they try to sitck more people in the electric chair.

Let us also not forget the number of unjustified police killings - those guys never get the electric chair, so why should the common man get it?

To put a cherry on the cone you called me a name. 'Name calling is bad' was one of the only threads you were using to hold onto in this conversation. Now that you gave that one up (not that you made any points with it to begin with) what else do you have left?

And once again you are not staying on subject. We were talking about me calling you a liar and once again you have strayed away from that subject. I said that I have not been calling you a liar and I get no comment from you. Basically what you have been doing through our whole conversation. I have never said that you have not said anything of "substance". All I have wanted you to do is back up what you said. Which you finally did. Then it became I'm calling you a liar. Now it's I said you have said nothing of substance. Which one is it Mr. Kerry?? Which topic are you going to stand by???

P.S. The dummy blast was done with a smiliey face. As in "tounge(?) and cheek". I do apologize for it not coming across that way.

Nothing in that post is even close to the truth about what has been going on here. Being full of it doesn't impress people or get points across. It just shows that you are full of it and nothing more. I'm tired of your childish game and I should have opted out of this "conversation" some time ago go but I thought you might have been trying to learn something. I see now that you aren't. My bad.

You need to go back and reread it then. Apparently your mind is starting to slip with old age. And you need not worry about me learning anything from you. I'm sorry. I'm wrong. I have learned how not to stay on subject. I do thank you for that. Hopefully I will never have to use this trait. And once again-I do apologize for getting you all riled up. My bad.

What annoys me the most of course, is that Kitt is trying to put straight opinion out, and really isnt spinning anything in any direction, he didnt even put the death penalty in a political context (he basically just said how HE felt about it as a person), then he backed it up by facts, then Bush-2004, a narrow minded ****, accused him of trying to further the campaign of John Kerry.

I have to go now, if this isnt locked yet I will give you a real opinion later today.

Not exactly. What Kitt did was make a statement of fact about how many murderers make up the prison population, and Bush-2004 called him on it and demanded to see proof that backed up that statement. And those of us who remember the good-old political boards can recall Kitt doing the same thing when one of us would make a statement that, probably like Kitt did on this one, we saw or heard somewhere and expressed it and then were pounced on by him to provide proof for such statement. I think that's what this is ultimately about. Sorry Kitt.
I do think Bush-2004 is goading you though, also in remembrance of ye old political boards.
That's just my take on it though.

Ok, now for my real post (btw, I finally got my laptop setup with the wireless network at school ;))

My first remark, was pointing out that even though in my opinion Isiahthomas makes posts that I find to be unintelligent, that if it upsets the board as a whole we ought to explain to him how to amend his behavior, instead of just terminating him. It was supposed to draw a parellel to the use of the death penalty, which no one got.

Secondly, it is my opinion that prison reform really is an important issue. If we put non-violent offenders (and there are many), in with hardened criminals, murderers etc, then when they get outof jail they certainly arent rehabilited, indeed, they probably have more antisocial issues than before their incarceration. As such, there ought to be life sentence prisons, where though conditions are decent, thereis obviously no aspect of rehabiliation, and prisons for people who arent lifers, where they teach them social and trade skills. They should also make it easier for excons to get a job, because when an excon cant pay the rent, of course they are far more likely to steal a car or sell some drugs to make ends meet, afterall, it could be said that theyhave a predisposition to it anyway.

Thirdly, I think people believing in the death penalty in a religious or moral sense is absolutely ludicrous. Dostoyevsky once said (well, a character in one of his books said, I couldnt tell you if it was his true opinion, however, since he was spared on the day of his execution, I would imagine it was) that it was a greater sin to execute someone than the murder they originally committed. When the person committed the murder, their victim was running and had a hope of escaped the whole time, however the person who is to be executed sits there in mental torture while awaiting his fate. That is definately a worse death than the one inflicted on his victims, therefore, theoretially, in a moral sense a greater sin.

I however, do not believe in morality, as such, I believe that there are only two possible merits to the death penalty. First off, German tribes did not have an abstract sense of 'justice', to them the reason they fined people for crimes was to prevent them and as such maintain order. I personally, believe that when you reason the death penalty as preventitive, though it is ineffective, at least it makes sense on an intellectual ground (for example, without facts you could debate it, but the facts work against it)

In my opinion, the true reason to put peple in jail, is to prevent them from disrupting society even more, therefore, if they arent a threat to anyone while in jail, there is no practical reason to use capital punishment. If capital punishment isnt completely abolished, as it should be, I think its only use should be to put to death people who commit murder in prison, since it is near impossible to put them in a place where they arent a danger to society. You could of course, put them in solitary for the rest of their lives, I however, would contend that solitary would be much more cruel and unusual than an injection.

Also, I must apologize for anytypos etc that I missed, I am on a new laptop and am not quite completely accustomed to the keyboard.

"It's not fair that you flood these boards with your dumbass posts, maybe we should give you the chair, it would solve the problem"

No were in your statement could anyone take out any idea that you were wanting anyone to explain anything to Isiahthomas. This is an open board and as long as he is not breaking any rules he can post away!! If you don't like it-tough doo-doo. All you are doing by posting this so called "parellel"(which should be spelled parallel) is making yourself look like an a s s. Which has not been the first time.

What I hate is people getting off on the insanity plea when most of them probably aren't truly and clinically insane at all.

On the other hand...of course you're insane. You have to be a little out of your mind to kill someone on purpose.

I just felt like throwing that out.

I used to think that if you were found not guilty by reason of insanity that means you are off the hook. That was until I took a criminal justice class a couple of semesters ago. People who are found not guilty for that reason don't go to prison or jail but they go to a mental institution or someplace like that instead. They usually stay there for years and years.

You changed the subject at every turn--I didn't. Your posts went from daring me, to calling me a liar (or, if you prefer, a spinner), to saying that I was suffering from old age; (and was thus incapable of expressing myself), to, incredibly, accusing me of changing the subject.

I had already addressed the actual original and only subject of the post. After that I was only defending myself and asking you to do your own homework. The fact that you chose not to do any homework of your own is what lead you into your abyss of constant subject changes.

Now, perhaps you have a lock on your search engines or something, I don't know. I have no idea why it is that you expect me to do all the posting of links while you just keep saying "prove it" in so many words. You could "prove it" to yourself if you, in one way or another, would just make any effort at all on your own behalf rather than spending everyone of your posts looking for ways to get me to entertain you. Or, as Sterling put it, attempting to goad me.

My goal was to have a conversation. Your goal was to have a confrontation.
