View Full Version : My mother passed away.

So I finally get the phone call no one wants to get. My brother left a message to call him as soon as possible last night, so I call him and ask what's up.

What's up, indeed.

He tells me that yesterday before noon my mother passed away in her sleep in a nursing home. She would have been 62 this month. I felt numb, shocked, even disappointed that I didn't have
a chance to tell her about my kitties.:crying: It seems so strange that two months ago she was doing okay with her home improvement things, what she liked to do most. It's like you expect it to happen, but I didn't think (and didn't wish) it would happen so soon.

So last Friday was my last day to see her. It was so hard to see her so ill and frail. You regret you don't get a chance to tell her things you had all your life to tell her.:(

Sorry Greg.
My Dad died a year ago almost to the day. My mom just had a cancer scare and had to have surgery. So I'm battling with the 'no more mom and dad' blues myself.

I was just recently sort of forced into a major conversation with my mom about something. I don't know if we resolved anything but it seemed to bring us closer together that we both dealt with it. I guess maybe the 'dealing with' is maybe more important than the outcome of dealing with issues when it comes to families.

Sorry about the middle of the night call, Greg. I know how that one feels.

My deepest condolences to you and your family. Your mother isn't suffering anymore.

My thoughts are with you. Life is difficult without a mother especially at a young age.

There's no love like a mother's love.

I am so sorry Cpt. I know exactly what you're feeling because I too lost my mother seven monts ago, you and your family have my deepest sympathies :(

I am very very sorry and I understand and realize that no "I am sorry" or "you're in my thoughts and prayers" can possibly make up for the fact that your mother is no longer a part of this life and knowing you're never going to see her again until you're dead. It is something that completely sucks and I hope you'll be able to deal as painlessly as you possibly can.

just out of curiosity, was your mother ill for a long time and this was expected, or was this out of nowhere? Either way it's still a shock because both ways, she's dead. But was it something you knew was going to happen soon, or did it just happen out of nowhere?

I knew my mom was going to die for about 18 months before it happened, so in a way, it was a relief (I don't mean it at all how it sounds), but in a way, I felt like I could start living again after the first few months because I really put everything on the backburner to take care of her and spend as much time as I could. But now I feel like things are looking up because I don't have to worry about her dying in the middle of the night (which ironically is what did happen) or anything like that anymore, I can let loose.

I know what your going thru. My dad died two years of a massive heart attack. He was fine one minute then felt dizzy and he was gone. My mom was diagnoised with breast cancer last year. It was caught early and she is doing great. Your mom is in a better place now. It will take some time but hang in there.

There's no love like a mother's love. I guess it was a very good thing that I was able to get down to the hospital last Friday to hold her hand and give her a kiss...It was strange because for so many years I felt that I had lacked affirmation from her, and I was glad to get that last week before she died yesterday.

I am so deeply sorry. I pray for her to be at peace, and for you and your family in this very hard time. Losing a loved one is one of the hardest things anyone has to do, and there's really nothing we can say that will make it any easier. I just hope you know we're all thinking of you and are here for you if you need us.

Well, last week was not a fun week. You go through so many emotions, sorrow, depression, fear, remorse, frustration, anger, and then you just...burn out. You feel nothing. These are the emotions people have told me you go through when a parent dies.:(

And what really made me mad was at my mother's memorial service at her house last Wednesday, when I spoke at length to the crowd about the up-and-down relationship with my mother, that she nurtured me to be a creative intelligent kid, but then I was a little too "intellectual" and over-imaginative, and hyperactive for her. I was left with the feeling that I was "different" and not to be taken seriously, and that my creative, artistic pursuits were "not worth doing." It wasn't until later in her life that she kind of understood a little where I was coming from. But after the service, my older brother said that "I went on a little too long" with my schpiel, that people were getting frustrated and wanted to eat. I say, to hell with them!!! I had something I felt I needed to say, and I didn't care what my brother thought. It was nice afterwards that some people came up to me and said that my mother thought very highly of me.:D

You did the right thing, Greg, telling your story. Period! I would loved to have heard what you had to say. Knowing you as I do from this site, I'm sure it would have been quite moving and interesting for me to hear. Please don't let anyone - brother included - cause you to lose sight of your inner emotions or alter your approach in how you choose to express them. Savor that you had and took the opportunity to express yourself. So many of us are not able, for one reason or another, to express ourselves. That's especially unfortunate wnen it comes to life changing turns in our worlds. So good for you that you are not only capable of expressing yourself, but willing to do so!

A hand shake and a hug is what I'd pass along to you if I were standing next to you Greg.
