Joey so far has been a hit for NBC

CBS and ABC so far this season have had plenty of hits with big premeires. NBC on the other hand, as I see it only has one hit with Joey. The rest of their new shows have declining ratings since the preimeirs. CBS has their biggest hit with what a surprise CSI:New York. One day I see that network with CSI on each day of the week. ABC since gaining a new network president has gained huge ratings with Lost and Desperate Housewives. Desperate Housewives even had the highest ratings for a series premeire this season. Bigger than CSI:NY.

Last week ABC won in adults 18-49 4.3 to 3.5, a huge margin. Keep in mind that the predsidential debates knocked out "CSI" and "ER" for CBS and NBC, respectively. "Desparate" and "Lost" are massive hits for the network, although the outlook will be clearer in the weeks to come. "Wife Swap" is another surprise. It actually beat "Law & Order" in adults last week and was only 2 million viewers behind.

"Medical Investigation" is a surprise- it's now Friday's top rated series. "Father" is merely okay, but took a big dip last week.

"Joey" is okay, not horrible but not great (last week it slipped below 14 million viewers).

I'm not sure if Joey will make a 2nd season...if it does, it will be the last

Even with lowered expectations, it's definitely not what NBC wanted it to be.

the only thing to really hurt Joey will be LeBlanc's paycheck. If Scrubs can get 6 million viewers and NBC keeps it, Joey should be safe. Joey is NOT Friends and NBC is beginning to realize that.

I agree. If NBC expects a new show to do better, they're just being stupid.

CSI NY is a big hit for CBS doing surprisingly better than Law & Order.

Lost and Desperate Housewives have put ABC back on the map for me. Those are two excellent series.

I think ABC and CBS are going to own this season. NBC looks like it's starting to fade but it's too early to tell.

I read where TGIF on ABC is not performing near as well. That seem to be ABC's only worry so far. I would hate it if 8 Simple Rules and Less Than Perfect did not make it to season 4 because that would mean no syndication deal. As for Hope and Faith, I doubt it would make a season 3, and Complete Savage probably won't last a year.

I think NBC will renew "Joey" for a second, and possibly a 3rd, season. I doubt it, because it's not that great, but it's not horrible it is OK.

UPN will renew "Star Trek: Enterprise" for a 5h season, and I'm sure a 6th and 7th. The shows gotten markedly better last season, and, from what they're saying, this season promises to be even better. Also, it took the other "Treks" at least 3 seasons to start improving, and besides, there's too many Trekies (like me) to dissapoint.

The different is that this year, it worked for ABC. I remember back in 98, ABC was trying everything. I bought bananas one day and they had a stick on them that said "Another fine use of yellow. ABC." Inventive, but it didn't work.

"Lost" is also holding its audience at 16+ million, which means its a big hit for the network. It'll be interesting to see how "Housewives" does this weekend. Viewer reaction has been overwealmingly positive, and the show grew from 10-10:30 to 10:30 to 11, a very positive sign. If the show can stay above 15 million viewers, it's a huge hit for the network.

Good. That should knock some wind out of the media sails.

life as we know it was up against baseball also this week. I think they should move it to 8pm Thursdays and move Extreme Makeover to 9pm. Joey and Will & Grace are sliding fast at 8pm, ABC needs to take advantage with something there.

I think that the only place a show such as "life" would work would be on the WB. It's obvious that ABC didn't have too much faith in it to begin with, sticking on Thursdays at 9pm. The problem with moving it to 8pm is "The OC."

As for "Joey," last night it sunk to 12.7mil viewers, and it still hasn't hit a bottom yet. Will NBC keep it? Considering that its only marginally better rated than "Fear Factor," I'm having doubts.
I would go as far to call it one of the biggest disappointments of the season.

Miss Golden
10-08-2004, 11:06 PM
Joey is a disappointment for sure because the critics liked the show. NBC has ordered a full season, but they could cut back if it hits rock bottom. But even if it continues to plummet, it could easily last a season due to it being a Friends spinoff, but the odds would be slim on a Season 2

Joey isn't performing what NBC expected, but I'd still say it's doing well. It's probably a top 15 show.

NBC is being naive if they think they can cancel Joey and find a new comedy series that will do better in the ratings.

Well, of course Joey isn't going to produce Friends' numbers. BUT, you do have to realize, cause of Joey's declining ratings, the entire night is going down as well. For example, ER is now second in its slot to Without a Trace. Will & Grace is also way down from last season. So, it looks like when NBC lost Friends, they basically lost the entire Thursday line-up.

I don't think NBC will remove Joey, I mean, what else can they air then, lol?

Turning the subject to ABC, now. Now that Desperate Housewives is indeed a hit (and I know episode 2 will also deliver great ratings), I'm guessing Alias will not return Sundays at 9. I think ABC should try Alias Wednesdays at 9 for a while in January. That is the only slot I think that could work. Since J.J. Abrams' other show, Lost, which is a big hit, airs at 8pm. But then where would they air The Bachlorette? Maybe Mondays? Interesting problem to have, but it is a good problem.

NBC and Warner Bros. made a huge mistake when they spun-off Joey. They spun-off the character probably least likely to be able to carry a whole show. Monica/Chandler, or a Rachel spin off would've done better. Joey is too much of a one-trick pony to be interesting without the other 5.

I don't see W&G going past this season, especially considering the contract is up this year. Plus the show has gone really down hill since the middle of the 5th season.

A Rachel spinoff wouldnt work.... because she wasn't funny.
And a Chandler/Monica spinoff wouldnt work, because they were already the stars of Friends.
BUT, a Ross spinoff wouldve been perfect.

Check that. ABC will renew three shows: "Lost," "Boston Legal" and "Desperate Housewives." (I would never declare anything a hit after one airing.)

"lifeless as we know it," the two awful sitcoms and "The Benefactor" will all hit the scrapheap sooner or later (sooner rather than later in "lawki's" case), leaving the only question mark, "Wife Swap." It's certainly improved ABC's fortunes Wednesdays at 10:00. But how long can people stomach it?

Desperate Housewives is amazing. It's beating Law & Order: CI, by a lot, too (who would have thought Law & Order and Law & Order: CI would be losing to new series). Last night DH had a 12.2/19 fast national Nielsen rating, 14.9/21 in the overnights, average of 20.29 million viewers (much more viewers probably who tuned in for some of it) and an 8.7/21 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m., declining by only 10 percent in the overnights (16.6/23 to 14.9/21), 1.35 million viewers (21.64 to 20.29 million) and 2 percent among adults 18-49 (8.9/21 to 8.7/21) from last week's series opener. It was by far the highest rated show last night.

Lost is also dominating its timeslot. Boston Legal is winning its timeslot, too, thanks to DH. Wife Swap is holding up well against stiff competition. Who would have thought that Law & Order would be last (3rd) in its timeslot among viewers 18-49. So, Wife Swap will be renewed as well.

As for the shows you mentioned not doing too well. Rodney is doing decent, its holding up most of Jim's audience at a better rate than Less Than Perfect. We'll see how it does later in the season, but I think this one will at least last the season. Complete Savages is better show in my opinion, but its not doing too well in the ratings. 8 Simple Rules did decent this Friday and Savages almost lost a full rating point from it; not good. The Benefactor will be gone after November 1, and I'm sure it won't return next year for another season. Life of Luxury will take that slot on November 8, with host George Hamilton.
I won't talk about life as we know until next week, as you said, you can't judge a series after only one airing.

So what? Joey is a little slow in the ratings! Horrors! NBC cannot expect Friends rating immediately even if it is a Friends spinoff! Joey isn't the only show to get off to somewhat of a slow start... Cheers was in LAST PLACE in its first season!

Joey has potential... but the real question is does NBC have faith in it?

db108108
10-11-2004, 05:12 PM
See, that's the problem with spin-off. "Joey" couldn't have possibly gotten more promotion than it did, and it's launch was from "Friends." I should be doing a whole lot better than it is doing, which is the problem. A bigger problem is that it isn't likely to do better. Who's left to discover it? Everybody who is going to watch is watching.

Hello again, everyone! I'm back from a long summer absence to once again try to contribute to this fine board! What better way to get started again than to say a few words about this fall's new crop of sitcoms? Come to think of it, the fewer words, the better, since most of the new shows are plainly not worth watching, except "Joey", but not for the reasons you might think.

I believe that "Joey" is easily the best new sitcom of the 2004-05 season, but not because of Matt LeBlanc, whose character is funny and likable, but, thanks to "Friends", is also heavily predictable. I happen to like his brother Michael, played by Paolo Costanzo, who to me seems to be a future breakout star. His character is also funny and likable---and smart, unlike Joey---yet still a little awkward when it comes to things like girls and getting out of his mother's shadow. Fortunately, Joey's always around to help. Here's someone you can root for and feel sorry for and also laugh with instead of at, and yet you sense he'll make it if he can just get over that one big hurdle in life. I might be getting a bit carried away there, but I hope the show can at least last a couple of years. It may not be another "Friends" and may not draw huge numbers like "Desperate Housewives" (without a doubt, THE best show on TV this season!), but so what? I think some of you may be overreacting on that count. It's not that big a deal! At least we can say for sure that it's far better than "Complete Savages" and "Father Of The Pride" (what were they thinking???). Thank goodness for moral victories!

We need Desparate Housewives for sitcoms.

We have Scrubs and Arrested Development, but unfortauntely, they don't have break-out appeal.
