Willona was always screaming she was broke and she was supporting herself. She had no kids, and lived in the projects where the rent was much lower and she was struggling like the Evans. Made no sense-LOL

Griffin 09-26-2004, 10:03 PM On the other hand, Ms. Woods DID look good in them outfits, and Girlfriend wasn't trickin' or anything like that, so who cares where she got the loot for her wardrobe? AtlantaBravesFan29 09-26-2004, 11:52 PM In the episode where Florida goes to night school,James insulted Willona about where she got her clothes and then Willona got back at James by saying that she wasn't pickin' cotton no more. knl9674 09-27-2004, 01:13 PM i don't recall wilona ever saying that she was "broke." she eluded to having hard times like everyone else but never "broke." -she always brought gifts. -she always was dressed to the 9s. -she threw dinner parties. -she always offered money to the Evans when they were in a bind. wilona was by no means BROKE. could she have gotten out of the projects...probably so. laneyday 09-27-2004, 01:44 PM When JJ was held up in prison, Wilona offered to give the Evans' some money but she discovered she didn't have quite enough. She was low but never broke. Yeah I meant to say struggling, not broke. One of her statements from the episode Rent Party "The banks don't cash my check no more, they just look at them and laugh". James"Thunder"Early 09-27-2004, 07:05 PM All the stuff she bought was probably cheap. but I can see why she was poor. Ireneparalegal 07-27-2005, 11:03 PM well she did work in a boutique, so she had the upper hand in fashion and probably getting a discount on those clothes. Jinxey 07-28-2005, 01:02 AM What about during the fifth and sixth season when they showed Willona's apartment. It looked like she was doing pretty good compared to a household of 3 people (or 5 people if you count season 6)...lol Zions Mother 07-28-2005, 01:13 AM Willona's character was very typical of some single women who live in the projects. I know quite a few who dress well and have nicely furnished apartments. Alot of them have what some might consider backward priorities. Willona I'm sure could have left the projects long before, but her character definitely portrayed reality then and now. Many of them don't move because they know that they will have to make sacrifices in the fashion category. Willona living in the projects was false reality anyway because you can;t get an apt in the projects as a single women TripperFan 07-28-2005, 09:08 AM Willona was always screaming she was broke and she was supporting herself. Made no sense-LOL Being a guy, you obviously haven't experienced "The Female Wage" have ya Solomon? It was even worse back then in pay equity, but I know plenty of single women with supposedly "good" jobs that are still struggling on their own to this day. Not to mention the retail wage - we're still getting screwed on it! TVFactFan 07-28-2005, 09:12 AM Being a guy, you obviously haven't experienced "The Female Wage" have ya Solomon? I'm amazed they were able to get in-lol TripperFan 07-28-2005, 03:41 PM But she had no one to take care of but herself I know! Same for a lot of the single women I know - and they live in one bedroom apts. It's REALLY tough out there unless they're in a professional career. The average clerk makes terrible money - and in retail its even worse - usually only a few cents over the minimum wage. I know several single women - no kids, maybe a cat who are having to work two and sometimes three jobs to keep their heads above water! Zions Mother 07-28-2005, 04:25 PM I'm amazed they were able to get in-lol I remember our bus driver back in the 60's she had no children and lived in the projects. She and her husband would buy a new caddy every 3 or more years. I remember when the first Wendy's came to our town, she got permission to take the kids on her bus route to Wendy's and she paid for all of them to have a single, fries, and drink. To this day she still lives there. Alot of these people develop an emotional bond. I remember it took Tony Dorsett quite a few years to convince his mother to move into a home that he wanted to build for her. Many of these families don't want to leave the relationships that they have built with the other families over the years. It's a comfort zone for them. liane49 04-28-2013, 03:13 PM On the other hand, Ms. Woods DID look good in them outfits, and Girlfriend wasn't trickin' or anything like that, so who cares where she got the loot for her wardrobe? Or did she get money from the state for taking care of Penny. There was no Penny in the first 4 seasons liane49 05-01-2013, 12:12 PM There was no Penny in the first 4 seasons Yea I know but having a good steady job like she did and no kids, couldn't she afford something better then the projects? TVFactFan 05-01-2013, 12:31 PM Yea I know but having a good steady job like she did and no kids, couldn't she afford something better then the projects? You would think since she was single which always made her character kind of weird and confusing because most low income housing is reserved for parents with kids not single people. *ROGER* 05-01-2013, 12:37 PM You would think since she was single which always made her character kind of weird and confusing because most low income housing is reserved for parents with kids not single people. Then what? TVFactFan 05-02-2013, 12:26 AM What if they couldn't afford a regular apartment? Then what? I will ask my mom if a single person was able to get a place in the projects in real life. *ROGER* 05-02-2013, 12:27 AM I would think low cost housing like that apartment building should be for families and not singles. TVFactFan 05-02-2013, 12:34 AM I would think low cost housing like that apartment building should be for families and not singles. Exactly, Why would a single person get a place like that over someone with kids? lol Brieannas21 05-02-2013, 12:36 AM I will ask my mom if a single person was able to get a place in the projects in real life. Yes they were and are. If you look at one of the post in this thread someone said that they knew single women who lived in projects back in the 70's. There are single people on Section 8 LOL. What world are you living in LOL TVFactFan 05-02-2013, 12:41 AM There are single people on Section 8 LOL. What world are you living in LOL Now I really need to talk to my mom. Any other team she is up and now I can't get in touch with her LOL liane49 05-02-2013, 11:27 AM I will ask my mom if a single person was able to get a place in the projects in real life. I tried to get a section 8 apartment once in MD but they said I couldn't quilify because I wasn't a widow or didn't have any kids. TVFactFan 05-02-2013, 11:55 AM Just asked my mom and another person in their 60's and they told me in the 70's you could not get a place in the projects without kids The End Brieannas21 05-02-2013, 12:42 PM Just asked my mom and another person in their 60's and they told me in the 70's you could not get a place in the projects without kids The End I'm pretty sure you could, the elderly lived in the projects and people without children lived and still live in the projects. Back in college I use to work with DHA, I should know. Back then you had to have a job that was basically below or at minimum wage, you could not have any felonies and you couldn't have a felon living with you. The elderly lives in senior homes Brieannas21 05-02-2013, 02:36 PM The elderly lives in senior homes Not all elderly people live in senior homes. There are a lot of old people who want to live at home not in a nursing home or a senior living home. There are people who are provide in home nursing/aide care for the elderly in their homes, even people who are living in low income housing because medicare and or their SSI pays for it. Didn't you say that you grew up in the hood? Or am I thinking of someone else? liane49 05-02-2013, 04:51 PM I have to disagree with you there. I knew plenty of single women living in the projects in the 70's. Section 8 are nice aprtments where the projects are crummy. Section 8 goes by your income and if you have kids or not. I live in the washing DC area and I don't know if this is true, but section 8 use to be all filled up because so many people wanted one. And it took a long time for you to be on a waiting list. I dn't know if a single person with no kids can live in the projects but for section 8 you have to have kids or maybe be a widow. They figure if you don't have kids you can get a better job or have more then one job. Brieannas21 05-02-2013, 05:27 PM Section 8 are nice aprtments where the projects are crummy. And you're correct that the waiting list is long, I remember a few years back they were showing on the news how people were camping outside the housing office just to get a application. liane49 05-03-2013, 11:41 AM Well it is different in each state because in Dallas you can be single and qualify for housing. One girl I use to work with said her sister has 2 kids and took 4 years to get one. This was a long time ago. This friend of mine took 4 years to get a senior aprtment because not only is the economy bad but our cost of living is high. This other girl I use to live with said she could have gotten a section 8 but just never tried. I said when the kids turn 18 you have to give it up and she said why? I said because I tried and without kids I coulnd't do it. |
