one of my friends sent me a list of her cd collection that she sent to a 17 year old friend of hers (she's in her late 20's) and the friend has never heard of. I cannot believe someone who is 17, especially with parents in their early-to-mid 30's (they had her young) has never heard of:

::drum roll::
Prince
George Michael
Metallica
Garbage
Sade
Melissa Etheridge
David Bowie
Stevie Nicks
Moby
Tina Turner
Guns N Roses
Dolly Parton

am I the only person kinda shocked someone who is 17 has never heard of ANY of these artists? I wonder what kind of rock she was living under for all her life, and if so, I wanna rescue other kids out of that rock, lol. I mean, to know who Simple Plan is but to not knowing who Prince or Metallica or Bowie is is rather sad if you ask me. Since all of those artists have had some sort of success in the past decade, not like people are expecting her to know Kajagoogoo or A Taste Of Honey.

Yeah, who on earth has never heard of that Stevie Nicks guy?;)

Yes, that is an amazing list of people for one citizen of the US or Britain at least to have never heard of.:eek4:

That really doesn't surprise me, I know 17 year olds who don't know who Elvis or the Beatles are ohno:

Actually I know quite a few young people who have never heard of Stevie Nicks. It is strange though that she has never heard of a single artist on that list. She must be living under a rock or something.

Yes I understood the joke :) I was just referring to BuffySlayers list and how he couldn't believe that that girl had never heard of her.

well, Stevie did have a couple hits off the Trouble In Shangri-La album in 2001, and also the Fleetwood Mac reunion tours in 97 and last year, so it makes me surprised someone is completely in the dark who she is, when she's definately stayed around.

Yep. Stevie Nicks is pretty danged well known. Surprised me that a 17 year old would hadn't heard of her.

plus, you would think that since her mom is 34, that she would've definately played a lot of this music around her daughter. Since kids do know a lot from childhood what their parents liked. Many of the artists listed, 34 is usually a common age for fans of them.

This is what happens when kids listen to nothing but those stupid rap stations.

 I've gotta say I didn't know who Stevie Nicks was until I was almost in my 20's.

Growing up I never got to listen to music that often.

Oh I agree with you that it is strange that some people have never heard of her. It surprises me too whenever I meet some young person who doesn't know who she is. I was just trying to point out that I know many people who have no idea who I'm talking about if I mention her.
But I think Mandie has a point about kids listening to nothing but Rap/Hip Hop or whatever and not becoming familiar with other kinds of music. I've even met a few people who have never heard of Frank Sinatra and he was very popular back in his day.

We never had a radio growing up, my grandma finally bought me and my brother one when we were about 15.

My dad just thought radios were really unnecessary.

Well we did have an old clock radio that didn't work very well, but it did come in, so my dad let us listen to that when we could get it to come in.

We've got an 80's station here where I live, and I love it :D

I WISH I did not know who George Michael is. I also want to defend this statement because many people think that if you bash Geroge Michael that you are bashing gay people. I have nothing against gay people, I've known gay people in my life, and to me they were just normal guys, I never looked at them as being different. I hate Michael because he has no talent, IMO.

lol... I know you said Billy Joel is a second-rate Elton John. What -rate Elton John would you say George Michael is? since it's been obvious his entire career that George has wanted to be Elton

Maybe George Michael could be a Elton John cover artist.

That is really odd. I'm 23, and have not only heard of all those artists, but am a big fan of many of them. The only people Iv'e ever heard of who possibly wouldn't know who they are, are people who have either been overly sheltered, or people who's Religion would forbid them to listen. I don't see any other way someone can live in this world, and not know of such popular artists.

You might want to make your friend a tape to give to her friend of some of these artists, because she's sure missing out on alot of great music.

well, even tho you don't like him, you do agree it is kinda strange that a 17 year old doesn't at least know Faith, Wake Me Up Before You Go Go and Careless Whisper, right?

George Michael hasn't been popular for a very long time, and I doubt he is one of those artists whose back catalog continues to sell, so I actually would not be all that surprised if a 17 year old in 2004 would not know who he is.

true, but you'd think those 3 songs at least she'd know. Faith from Limp Bizkit, Wake Me Up Before You Go Go from the Charlie's Angels movie, and Careless Whisper still gets AC airplay.

I think there probably are a number of young music fans who are aware of George Michael. He got alot of airplay on r&b radio a few years ago dueting with Mary J. Blige on "As". Did a duet with Whitney Houston as well a couple years back. And there was some new young act on Soul Train recently whose first single is a cover of Careless Whisper. I'd bet his back catalog does sell well and that there's a fair amount of George Michael awareness among young music fans. It's certainly there in the urban community.

yep, and his last cd "Patience" did do fairly respectable. He'll never recapture his glory days between 1985-1988, but he's definately kept enough a profile up that it'd be surprising someone 17 isn't at least aware of his name.

Yeah, I hate rap music, but I have heard of alot of rap artists at one time or another, it's hard to believe someone hasn't heard of George Michael or Stevie Nicks or someone, especially if they watch alot of television
