What moment in M*A*S*H turns you into a big softie?

This episode will be on a lot of lists, but for me it's "Abyssinia Henry." Of course, that final O.R. scene gets to me, but what moves me even more occurs right before it.

Henry gets on the chopper without saying goodbye to Radar, and you see a closeup of Radar saluting, about to cry. That always moves me to tears (as does the following scene, of course).

I try to avoid this topic...it makes me sad just thinking about everything touching on the show, especially B.J.'s goodbye. Heck, that whole episode. Every time it's on, people on another floor can hear me and ask what's wrong. You'd think they'd know by now.;) Of course, Abyssinia Henry, like you said, and Who Knew?, though I love it and don't quite know why. Goodbye Radar gets me, and Sometimes You Hear the Bullet. Oh, and the scene where the Korean guy dies from the man in the next bed's shooting him. The soldier's face...
As, you can see, many moments affect me; strangely, not much outside the M*A*S*H world does to quite that extent.

Like you said, GFA is probably the most touching episode proabbly just because its 2 1/2 hrs of sadness. The part that really gets me is BJs good bye and the Korean musicians dying. When Charles say something like "music was once a refuge but will now always be a remeinder" that whole scene had me in tears...*sniff*

My favorite weeping episode... is "Death Takes a Holiday"

The moment when BJ says something to Father Mulcahy to the effect of.... "let me keep him alive a few more moments... that way his kids won't have to think of Christmas as the day their daddy died."

And then when BJ can't succeed, Hawkeye screws with the death certificate.

"Goodbye Radar" - Hawkeye BJ and Potter discover Radar's beloved teddybear on Hawkeye's bunk. A wonderful parting salute to a memorable character.

"Old Soldiers" - Potter drinks a last toast to his departed WW1 buddies.

I thought he was squinting in that picture... certainly doesn't look like he's sad.... except maybe in the lips... but that's about it.

My first post.........

I actually have three.
3-When Hawkeye's Dad is in the hospital and he and Charles share a kind moment.

2-When the nurse that was in love with him dies. At the end he is telling everyone he loves them 1 by 1, I tear up.

1-DTAH- When Max takes Charles a plate of food, and tells him it must remain a secret, I just about lose it. That scene, along with the dying soldier, the comparison was just pulling at your heart.............

I have to agree with everyone else. "Abassinya, Henry" is really touching. I get emotional just thinking of Radar's speech in the OR. I also like BJ and Hawkeye's good-bye in "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen."

"Goodbye, Radar," too. It's so hartbreaking when Radar is trying to say goodbye to everyone, but they're all busy taking care of casualties. It just goes to show that the war doesn't stop, even at a time like that.

I always liked that scene between Hawkeye and Charles, when Charles actually calls him "Hawkeye." Very moving.

All of the moments mentioned above always get to me also. One that has not been mentioned is in "The Party." I love the end where Radar reads Peg's letter to everyone in the OR. That scene ALWAYS brings me to tears.

How about the one where their families back home all got together for a party. And Klinger's mom wasn't supposed to know he was in Korea. But she knew. She just didn't want her son to worry about HER. :(

To AKA: Henry didn't say the words "good bye" to Radar, but he did give a verbal "so long" before he got on the chopper: "You behave yourself or I'm gonna come back and kick your butt." He wasn't entirely serious, of course!

The episode about the american soldier and the North korean soilder. The american shot the N. korean who tried to steal his boots because his feet were cold. At the end when the N. Korean dies, the american cries over his death and doesn't think he'll ever be able to put a pair of shoes on again without thinking of the N. Korean. That was so sad.

The final scene in 'Abyssinia, Henry' the delivery of that line by Gary Burghoff is just brilliant, also as said before Radar saluting Henry as the chopper leaves.

In 'Goodbye, Farewell and Amen' The realisation that Hawkeye's talking about a Mother smothering her child and when Charles knows that his 'band' have all been killed "For me, music had always been a refuge from this miserable experience. Now it will always be a reminder."

And of course...

While i never liked the way they killed him off, I have to say the OR scene when Radar tells the staff that Henrys plane has "spun into the sea of Japan and there were no survivours", that scene makes me, a 43 year old man cry EVERYTIME I watch it...subsequently, i can only watch it maybe every 2nd or 3rd time they play it ! #@_@#

Sometimes you hear the bullet was the first one that did it for me....Kim was kinda teary, too! Of course, Henry's death is sad....and I always get sad that Trap never really had a "good-bye" episode!

First, you have the episode where everybody conspires with Peg Hunnicutt to surprise B . J . on his anniversary . I always cry at the part where they show their film sarring Peg to B . J ., and Margaret offers to dance with him . Second, you have the episode where everybody gets their loved ones to have a party in New York City . I always cry at the part where Radar reads their letters in the operating room . Finally, you have "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" . I always cry at the scene where the doctors are in the operating room, the gunfire stops, and the radio announcer says "That sound you're hering in peace, folks" . I also cry at the "goodbye party" scene where everybody explains what they'll be doing with their lives now that the Korean War is over, and the scene where everybody says goodbye to everybody else .

I read through most of these and, they are all great ones. One good one I remember is the one where Hawkeye didn't get to say goodbye to Trapper, because he was in sole. I think Hawk jacked an army jeep and, went to try and catch him before he left. Radar went with him. They didn't make it on time. Trapper was already gone. BJ was there though. They all ended up getting wasted and, then went back to camp. It was hilarious Frank and Margaret we're so mad. They we're like oh no not again. Hawkeye got a new partner in crime.

It's a quick moment, but when it first aired, I remember it creating a pretty cool feeling. In the episode Dear Dad...Three, Henry, Radar, Trapper and Hawkeye are watching home movies of Henry's daughter's birthday party and since it's without sound, his wife lines up the children from the party with each one holding a cardboard square. They turn them around to reveal the message "MISS YOU." Watching the scene in syndication after Henry is killed while on his way home, made the scene more bitter-sweet.

Too Many Cooks, there is a scene where Margaret is trying to relate and empathize with Potter on how his wife needed him, just like how Margaret needed Donald. It was such a nice scene between them.

Although it rarely happened, there were a few times when you could actually feel sorry for Frank. The one time I remember, was Frank's very last scene. Margaret had just married Donald and as they were flying off, Frank is left alone on the chopper pad; then looking as though he just lost his best friend, he quietly says: "Bye Margaret."

There was an episode where the heart vessel of a dying man was needed to save another, but they weren't sure he would die in time. His friend was livid they were salvaging the part of the man's body. Father Mulcahy asks the friend if the man would have sacrificed himself for another soldier. This changed the perspective of the dying man's friend.

I'm thinking more touching scenes than sad ones...Henry's death was tragic, not touching.

When Potter gave the laundry man Sophie, and Radar approaches him and says "Colonel? That was the best thing I saw anybody do ever."

When Radar gifts Sophie (then a stallion LOL) to Potter during Potter's Anniversary.

Klinger taking the meal to Charles during the Christmas episode.

When B.J. Charles & Hawkeye have to put the Korean orphan girl into the spinning thing and say goodbye to her.

Radar's Teddy Bear being left on Hawkeye's cot. Also when it, along with Henry's fishing lure was put into the time capsule.
