vashti1999 09-08-2004, 11:42 PM Diff'rent Strokes is a definite for me too. I'd also like to have Survivor All-Stars (enjoyed it) and 7th Heaven. I think I'm in the minority but I like that show. But the only set I'm buying for sure is DS.

Hey Jazz, how come you never listed your collection? What else do you have?
Dean Winchester 09-08-2004, 11:50 PM didn't Sanford And Son season 4 come out only 2-3 months ago? Shocking Columbia will give it such short delays between seasons when you consider the way they treat AITF and Jeffersons.

I only have about 15 TV-DVDs so far, but I'll be building up my collection in the next few months. I'm really behind, as many of the sets on my list to get came out several months ago. All mine are first seasons, if that tells you anything. There'll be several coming out in the next few months that I will definately be getting on the day they come out though
ClassicTV4Ever 09-09-2004, 12:38 AM Diff'rent Strokes Season 1 and Jem Season 3 Part 1 :)
Classic TV Fanatic 09-09-2004, 12:44 AM Diff'rent Strokes - Season 1 (already pre-ordered)

So far, 10 voters have made selections, Diff'rent Strokes is 10 for 10.

I think DS will be the highest selling "classic" sitcom.
("classic" meaning something older than 15 years old, although I consider some current shows to be classic)
vashti1999 09-09-2004, 10:55 AM I bet, with the last episode of DS season 1 introducing the Facts of Life cast, we'll see season 1 of that show released when DS season 2 comes out (hopefully) some time next year. At least that would make sense.
I just checked out the ep list for DS season 1, and of the episodes I remember, I'm looking forward to: The Spanking, The Trial, Goodbye Dolly, The Club Meeting, Willis' Privacy and No Time for Arnold. That last one was where Arnold pretended to wet the bed to get attention, but he woke up and found his sheets wet when he didn't do it on purpose. So he hurries and tries to change the sheets before anyone finds out, but Willis and Drummond catch him. The look on Arnold's face when he was caught was so funny. I always love seeing that scene when I watch that episode.

I'd honestly rather wait for season 3 of DS and seasons 1 and 2 of FOL together. Season 1 of FOL as a standalone DVD release will flop and the show will join the ranks of MTM and Larry Sanders, the first season is pure crap and will ONLY sell if they combine seasons 1 and 2 together.

I for one loved Season 1. But then again.... you can't get cooler than Molly Ringwald.
I'd buy it no matter what.... but releasing Seasons 1&2 together is the obvious thing to do.

yes, season 1 was 13 episodes and season 2 was 16 episodes. The first two seasons combined would be very logical. I mean, I would buy season 1 on it's own, but I wouldn't be very happy when the sales bomb and I'm stuck with the first season and no chance to see the Jo episodes again
YoliUSA 09-09-2004, 04:46 PM Diff'rent Strokes-Season 1
Impressions 09-09-2004, 04:58 PM Yep, you guessed it I'm apart of those peope who will be purchasing Diff'rent Strokes. I can't afford not to buy this DVD, I've been waiting for it to come to DVD for awhile, it doesn't matter to me that there is no special features or the fact that it could be cut (like some Columbia-Star releases), I just hope the sales sail on this release because I would like to let The Facts of Life see the light of day, if it ever comes.
Dean Winchester 09-09-2004, 05:15 PM what I find baffling is that Diff'rent Strokes, as Barwars has said, is probably THE most popular "classic" title... yet it got such crappy treatment on Nick and TV Land. When DS came to N@N in early 2001, it was their #1 series and a few episodes scored such high ratings that they were among the top 20 cable programs of the week (which is pretty hard to accomplish these days since there's a lot of successful cable-only current series to compete with) but yet it lasted less than 6 months on Nick.

Ahh, but there is special features.
3 Commentaries and 2 featurettes.

That's most likely the reason that it will be the most popular "classic" release.
It obviously has a large fanbase -- but they only had a small time to either be introduced to it (for me, and many others) and get reacquainted with it.

Also gonna get Diff'rent Strokes, I probably won't get both for a couple of weeks though :)

Only 2 of the hour long episodes appear to be syndicated prints. The rest all seem to be uncut.

yes, I grew up watching DS in the 80's... and was so excited to see it come to Nick in 2001... before 01, I hadn't actually seen a DS episode since 1995. Same with FOL, when it came to Nick in 2000, I hadn't seen it since 1991. So those 2 shows coming to DVD excite me a lot more.
One Day At A Time will be the same way when it comes out, I have loved the show when I've seen it, but I honestly haven't seen it since 96-97.
There are a lot of other "classic" shows out on DVD, like Happy Days and All In The Family, but those two shows for example are quite common, so a lot of fans don't "need" the DVD's as much because TV Land airs them quite a bit, but shows like Diff'rent Strokes, One Day At A Time (which I bet will sell well too) and Facts Of Life (which I also think will do very well on DVD whenever it gets announced) have a huge following but no actual supply for the demand.

I'm not surprised anymore. There's co's out there that are doing this. I was pissed when there were people who got their BMW DVDs a week early cause Best Buy had put them out early(which is very illegal)
robyrob 09-12-2004, 12:27 PM i loved watching DS when it originally aired, but i probably wont buy it, at least not for a long time; there are just too many other things that i want more that will have a higher replayability for me.
other than that - nothing on this weeks list :(
Dean Winchester 09-12-2004, 12:55 PM I think mail was fast. DeepDiscountDVD sent it out on Thursday and it came on Saturday, usually it takes a little longer for them to ship out.
However, I am glad I got it early. I have two college exams in the middle of this week, so I am glad I was able to get to enjoy DS a bit BEFORE then, instead of having to wait until Thursday to be able to watch it.
Everyone should preorder from DeepDiscountDVD from now on... I've heard from others that they have gotten tv-dvd's days in advance from them as well. And it was only $22.06 shipped.
Dean Winchester 09-12-2004, 01:01 PM speaking of DS.
The documentary (I think they're going to have one for each season, Buffy sets do that, a documentary per season) was pretty good, and you can tell they are going to continue it with each successive season.
However, I don't understand why Gary Coleman won't bother participating in these featurettes, I know he blames DS for his downfall (did he really expect to top this show?) but I would say Todd Bridges has certainly had the harder life since the show ended, and he wasn't above contributing to the interview.
Charlotte Rae looks better than she has in years, looks like she finally stopped coloring her hair and has let her hair be more of a greyish red color, which suits her much better at her age than how she looked on the Facts Of Life reunion movie.
Even funnier is that Conrad Bain is in his 80's now and he looks the same age as he did when he was on DS.
The set is definately worth owning, I just hope sales are good enough that we can see season 2 (and maybe a season 1/2 FOL release) sometime in the spring of 2005.
The quality of the episodes is great too... absolutely no grain.

the third is a orange background with a big red 3 (they almost bleed into each other) with another pose of Gary with his arms folded, but giving a smart alec look.
They did a good job, disc 1 is 8 eps, disc 2 is 9, and disc 3 is 7, and the bonus materials are on disc 3.
I've watched three episodes so far. I think the quality is great. I did have to see "The Girls School" first just to get my breath of Facts Of Life.
I think DS's peak were in the first three or four seasons. In the latter seasons there were too many sensational special episode. Season 1 did have it's own "very special episode" (Getting Involved) but it was nowhere as disturbing or twisted as The Hitchhikers or The Bicycle Man were.

7th Heaven also retails for a really high price, and I don't think it's a show like The X-Files or Buffy or Star Trek that it has a hardcore cult following and the fans are so devoted to it that they are willing to pay $60. If it was retailing more at a Dawson's Creek level price (being about $35 at places like Best Buy), I'd understand better.
Diff'rent Strokes is 1000 times better. You had your big BMW DVD the other week, now it's our turn with DS. We respected your BMW, you can respect our DS

Excuse me, geesh, I was just saying what I thought, I wasn't trying to take away from anyone this poll has 7th Heaven included
Besides 7th Heaven is priced at $45 on amazon.com, so they've brought the price down alot. Also 7th Heaven is ranking alot higher than DS on amazon.com. I think they'll both be big sellers.
Yeah I had my BMW with talk of how great Futurama was with it, did I complain about that? NO
I wasn't aware this was a Diff'rent Strokes only thread, my bad, I thought it was about Sept. 14th DVDs, so I guess that means I can't mention GI Joe or any of the others coming out that day, cause it might take away from DS
barwars 09-13-2004, 03:31 PM I think DS will sell more than 7th Heaven.... because it had better ratings when it originally aired, and it doesnt currently air -- but it's fresh in people's minds.
Ohh, and to both you.... SHUT UP
Dean Winchester 09-13-2004, 03:38 PM it anything is really going to be a big seller this week, I think Everybody Loves Raymond would be the one that would outsell DS. Since ELR is currently the #1 sitcom on television and it's reasonably priced. I hate it, but a lot of people do love Raymond.
7th Heaven was better when it was called Eight Is Enough :). I do think it'd sell well, but at a lower price. The price it's going for is generally reserved for cult sci-fi series. The average 7th Heaven fan (not all of them, but most fans I come across are in their early teen years) isn't quite old enough that parting $60 for a tv-dvd is as easy for them as it would be for an adult buying a X-Files set. If they were smart, they'd slash it down about $15-20, just because The X-Files, Star Trek (and all it's incarnations) and Buffy The Vampire Slayer can sell well at a jacked up price doesn't mean all hour-long shows do. Those aforementioned shows are huge cult series... the fanbases are rabid and MUST own every set asap. 7th Heaven fans are a little more passive. You won't be seeing "Camden-con" like you do for the other shows. Nothing bashing it, just stating that it's not quite the type of show to get away with selling for a hefty price-tag.

I'll shut up when I'm good and ready, I wouldn't have said anything If I had been attacked.
Nothing personal against you though okay? :)
Dean Winchester 09-13-2004, 04:41 PM well, I think you need to realize it wasn't a personal offense, or at least wasn't intended to be that way.
Diff'rent Strokes is a show that is shown just about nowhere. It is not one of my top 5 or 10 (probably in my teens) fave shows... But the fact that it is such a rarity on DVD makes it such a bigger deal to most of us. I really like the show (and many others do, since 15 voted for it) and there is just no other option to watch the show now besides those who managed to tape the episodes... so being able to OWN this show on DVD is a lot different for us than shows like Cheers, Friends, even Boy Meets World, that are well-liked, but also well-aired. Diff'rent Strokes is one of the shows that is tailer-made for DVD, and otoh... 7th Heaven airs all the time in reruns, so if you're going to ask many of us to pick the two, we'll pick DS.
barwars 09-13-2004, 05:34 PM Originally posted by BuffySlayer79

That's why I think DS will sell better.
It's probably the most popular show that you can't just turn on the TV and watch.
Come to think of it.... I dont think there's any show more popular, that doesnt air in reruns.
Dean Winchester 09-13-2004, 08:18 PM I wanna apologize to Angela.
I took what she said the wrong way (like she was saying "7th Heaven IS BETTER than Diff'rent Strokes" even tho she knew she was preaching to the prosecuting team) and got defensive. She basically was just saying she thought 7th Heaven could probably outsell DS, not that she was pitting the quality of one show against the other. And for that, I am sorry.

Yeah, I read that on tsod. I know that's a disappointment for hardcore fans that the wait is a little longer. Still, it's good that it'll eventually come out when there was a thought not long ago that music rights would prevent it from ever being released. Maybe by missing the holiday rush, it'll sell even better.

now if Miami Vice can come out music entact... what is the excuse for Malcolm In The Middle, Ally McBeal and The Wonder Years? Miami Vice was practically a mid-1980's radio station on television

vashti1999 09-14-2004, 04:17 PM To the people who have already checked out Diff'rent Strokes, I don't know if this was done specifically for the dvd (as opposed to something that was already there that I didn't notice on tv), but in the episode "Goodbye Dolly" when the detective hands Arnold a doll and tells him it's Homer, there's an obvious bad dubbing job on the audio. Listen for when he says, "Miles Monroe always gets his doll, kid." At first I noticed that what was being heard didn't match the movement of the lips, and I checked it out again and it was obvious they dubbed in the name Monroe. Not a big deal I guess, but I wanted to know if anyone else noticed it or at least alert you guys to it.

hmm, I just watched that episode but I didn't really notice it, I'll check that part out again later. That was one of the season 1 episodes I do remember seeing before (I was born during season 2, and I loved the show as a kid, but I wasn't old enough to begin to enjoy it until around seasons 5-6), along with the pilot episode and The Trial.
I already am looking forward to season 2, hopefully it'll be out around March or April 05, since Columbia seems to be doing the 6 month gap with Sanford and Son and Good Times, hopefully DS as well. The first 6 seasons are definate purchases but I highly doubt I'd want 7 and 8 even though season 8 was considerably better than season 7, if only for the fact that Kimberly actually appeared and that the episodes were more Arnold-centric again because there was too much Sam in the 7th year (if only Sam STAYED missing after the beginning of season 8, lol)
Dean Winchester 09-15-2004, 03:05 AM even though I doubt it'll sell quite as well as Diff'rent Strokes. I also anticipate the upcoming (when?) One Day At A Time season 1 set for many of the same reasons as DS. I have never seen a lot of ODAAT episodes, but I've seen quite a few spanning the first to last seasons, and liked every one I've seen, and just like DS and Facts Of Life (I bet will be a 2005 release), the show is somewhat of a rarity. It was a long-running show and got good ratings, but in recent years seems to have been forgotten. I hope ODAAT is also a success on DVD because it is definately a show I'd like to invest time and effort in on watching on DVD.

Hopefully Colombia Tri Star won't wait till a year later to release season sets of Diff'rent Strokes and Who's the Boss? and other shows like they did with Good Times, and with What's Happening there's an 8 month window between releases. I swear CTS has to be one of the slowest with releases

CTS has been getting better though IMO, Sanford And Son's been treated the way it would've been if Fox or Warner were distributing it instead, and the window between Good Time season 2 and 3 was a lot shorter than the time between 1 and 2. Even tho I do think there's room for improvement. Fox is well-known for branching out between 5-7 months between season set releases, basically every show except Mary Tyler Moore (who knows how bad that sold) and Simpsons (because commentary is recorded during the off-seasons) they release follow that structure.

That's good, I think they would want to release shows faster to make money faster. I think that's why Buena Vista is releasing BMW in short amount of time, I think BV will do that with all the shows they release.
Yeah that was ridiculous a year between Seasons 1 and 2 for Good Times, I don't mind 6 to 8 months but it's not the best though

Check it again. That same scene is also featured on "Retrospective (Part 1)" and the same obvious dubbed in voice is there too. BTW, I love that picture of Arnold on disc #2. Seeing Gary Coleman these days, you forget he made a cute little kid.

I agree, watching season 1 in particular is kinda sad because Gary has become such a bitter man as an adult, and he was such a hilarious and adorable kid. I feel bad for how he let stardom get the worst of him and the way his adoptive parents took advantage of his fame and money. Even though I don't see why he resents the show, no matter what, he will always be known for Diff'rent Strokes, and it's nothing to be ashamed of. Henry Winkler for example has done plenty of things since Happy Days, but he knows very well when he dies, the articles will read "The Fonz is dead. Henry Winkler dies at age...." and he has made peace with it.
