Let's get something straight. NOBODY is stupid on this board and #2 I got this information from Shavar Ross (Dudley) myself. Designing Women premiered in the Fall of 1986 and Dixie was let go after the 1984-1985 season.

Dixie Carter was GREAT as Maggie, but I love Dixie Carter in general. In EVERYTHING that she's done. And I'm GLAD she got fired from DS because I couldn't imagine her not in DW, I couldn't imagine Julia Sugarbaker's tirades not being carried out by Dixie!

It's real obvious that you and Mary Ann are the same person. Designing Women didn't even premiere untill over a year after Dixie was replaced so it is impossible that she left Diff'rent Strokes for Designing Women. Like it or not Dixie was let go!

I want to know why people are pretending to be Dixie's daughters, I mean if it was like "I'm the daughter you never heard of" it would be diff'rent but stealing her daughters identities, or trying to I should say is just down right ignorant, but that's my opinion! Back to the subject though, I don't know if Dixie was fired, but I do know Dixie was wonderful as Maggie. Although you say it wasn't Gary Coleman's show, without him I don't think it would have survived.

An interesting observasion- the producers who had been there for several seasons left just before the last season. I wonder if it was them or the new ones that ABC employed who go Dixie sacked? r wether they could have left because they had enough of Gary. (although I know they went on to produce "Who's The Boss")

For the record, Shavar Ross (Dudley) told me about the incident.

at the time I think a lot of the fans didn't like Dixie's character on the show and if I remember correctly the ratings reflected that and they tried to make some quick changes to stop the ratings slide.

...I know that I didn't like the character.

I can believe that about Gary. He did get the big head and it well should've been the Gary Coleman show because he was calling all the shots and pulling in the ratings.

I liked Maggie and Sam but their appearances did change the course of the show. The story lines got slower. And their southern twangs set my teeth on edge.

Disclaimer: Yes I am indeed a southerner but I hate how we Texans and other southerners are portrayed on television. Our "accents" are over the top on camera. Gracious

Anywho, Mary Ann Mobley wasn't a convincing Maggie. She seemed more quiet and docile. Her add on reminds of Dapne Maxwell Reid taking on the role of Vivian on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Neither quite measured up.

Perhaps, in addition to the personality conflicts, the producers realized the character of Maggie was not well thought out and decided to limit the character's use on the series, rather than have her killed off or quickly divorced from Drummond (which both would have been sour notes for the series to end on).

I noticed that he had a lot less screen time too. All of his time seemed to go to Sam...cute kid, don't get me wrong, but it kinda took focus away from the show, IMO...
