View Full Version : Classic Rock Fans: Classic Rock Songs that never did it for you
dlemond 09-01-2004, 12:27 PM For the classic rock fans only-
Name a classic rock song (by an artist you like) that you never really thought was great- or even liked that much.
I can name one song off the top of my head-
"Cocaine" by Eric Clapton
I don't see anything great about that song.
From the same album (Slowhand), I think that "The Core" is a much better tune.
Penny Lane 09-01-2004, 12:32 PM I Am The Walrus and Blue Jay Way by The Beatles
Great thread, DLemond.
There are so many, but if I had to pick one, it would definitely be "That Smell" by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I must say that the advent of the "classic rock" radio format in the mid-'80s(?) really killed some songs' effectiveness, as they're spun ad nauseum by certain stations.
Some classic rock stations have playlists that don't exceed 100 songs. It's really sickening.

Really? I know you're more of a Paul person, but wow. I think those are the two coolest "new" songs on Magical Mystery Tour.

Have you listened to the live version of "Cocaine" it is much better than the one on the album.
Dean Winchester 09-01-2004, 03:30 PM Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama (this song glorifies racism)
a lot of Eric Clapton's stuff, he just never truly did it for me, tho I do like Wonderful Tonight.

Your right about Sweet Home Alabama, I was shocked when Ruben sang it on AI.
You picked the one song that I really hate by Clapton, he tries to be sentimental, does nothing for me.
At the risk of turning this thread into an anti Skynard thread, I really don't understand why they're so darn revered on classic rock radio.
Another guy I just don't get is Steve Miller and his self tiled Steve Miller Band.
Abra, abracadabra. I wanna reach out and grab ya.
I don't think so, Steve.
;)
Dean Winchester 09-01-2004, 05:01 PM I am not that crazy about Steve Miller, tho I do like a few of his songs, most notably "Fly Like An Eagle", "Abracadabra" and "Jungle Love"
RustyShackleford 09-01-2004, 06:40 PM Led Zeppelin - D'Yer Mak'er, I dont like this song it just sounds weird to me, but its like the only one of theirs I dont like.

One thing I have a problem with is that they don't play newer songs by older artists. I was curious to hear what the latest albums by Tom Petty and George Harrison were like, but they never play them ("not classic enough, has to be at least over 15 years old"). It's strange that they never play the new album of 60's cover songs by Rush, "Flashback."

Absolutely.
Dean Winchester 09-02-2004, 04:12 PM so I take it you've never gotten any satisfaction from Satisfaction?
Steve M. 09-02-2004, 09:00 PM "Bohemian Rahpsody" by Queen. I could never get into that one.

Actually the song glorifies Alabama, with its blue skies and Muscle Shoals. It was written in response to Neil Young's "Southern Man" because Lynyrd Skynyrd had a problem with Young painting Dixie with such a broad brush and implying that all white Southerners are racist. Young loved that song, by the way; he though it was the coolest thing to be answered.
Young implied in "Southern Man" that white Southerners allowed themselves to be manipulated by Richard Nixon, and Skynyrd responded by saying that they didn't care one way or an another about Nixon - he was just another lying politician to them ("Now Watergate does not bother me") - and they also said that folks like Young weren't necessarily pure ("Does your conscience bother you? Tell the truth."). Gee, I never thought I'd be defending Dixie boys!
By the way, why did Skynyrd sing about Alabama when they hailed from Florida?
