View Full Version : No TV - HELP!!!!!

Here’s the deal: I have digital-satellite TV installed in my room but this morning when I woke up I found that I couldn’t actually turn the receiver on. I tried everything I could think of and I called the technical helpline and nothing they could suggest rectified the problem. I’ve had to book an engineer to come out and have a look at the thing and see if he can fix it. It’s gonna cost me £65 ($130) just to get the guy out. If I have to get a new receiver it’s gonna cost an extra £200 ($400).
Of course I’m p!$sed off about having to pay all this money to fix a system that I’ve only had for a year and have taken so much care with - by rights it should be working perfectly for at least another few years. But my main problem is this:
TV is my life and I now can’t watch TV for at least 3 days because the engineer isn’t coming until Tuesday. If I need to replace my satellite receiver I may not be able to watch TV for at least a month! SO WHAT THE HELL AM I GOING TO DO IN THE MEANTIME??
I need suggestions. Don’t tell me to read a book because I’ve read all the books I have and I can’t afford new ones. Listening to music is all well and good but I have to be doing something at the same time. I can’t go out because I live in the middle of nowhere and I can’t drive so I’m reliant on public transportation and I can’t afford it right now. Also, I can’t skate anymore either because I fell off my board last week and my knee still hasn’t healed yet.
If my vindictive parents weren’t so evil I could watch their TV but they won’t let me. So help me God, if I miss the last episode of ‘Tru Calling’ I will kill someone!
Help me out, guys. :(

Why not go to a friends house or have them tape it for you. I feel for you though. Last summer when the power went out I was so bored without my tv and not being able to use the swimming pool that I took extra long showers just to kill time.

A LOT of people in this world have never watched TV in their life. See Africa etc.

They don't have computers either.

That's not a great answer. People are used to what they grew up with. Because one segment of the population has grown up with television and another hasn't doesn't mean that those with television are any less worthy because of their interests than those who had to do without. For some it's luxury, for others, it's necessity. If that's Mossopp's interest and (he/she?) isn't hurting anyone by it, why bring in an argument about what other people have had to do without. A LOT of people in this world have never done A LOT of things.

By the way, they DO have tvs in Africa, it ain't all jungle and savages you know.

I love how y'all are telling me to "get a life". I'd kill to see how happy you'd be when you're paying $40 a month for a satalite system that doesn't work!
Would you still think it's so f##king funny when you're earning $6 an hour and you have to spend all your hard-earned cash on fixing something that, by rights, should be in full working condition!?
I bought my satalite system 1 and a half years ago. It should be working perfectly right now. If you think it's funny that I have to pay $400 to fix the f#ck#ng thing then you can go to hell!!!!!!
I've worked my arse off for minimum wage for the past 4 years. I have no f#ck!ng money and I'm about to have my home reposessed because I can't keep up my mortgage payments.
Now my TV packs in, I have to pay $400 to fix it and y'all think it's funny??????
F##k you. That's all I have to say.

WELL SAID.

Mossopp - in answer to your question, how about spring cleaning...in August? That would keep you busy. Or rearranging your furniture. I love doing that - even though I tend to put everything back the way it was before. Takes up a lot of time, though!

I don't know what your parents setup is, but how about this? They're probably on some sort of cable system. Spend 10 bucks on a divider part and a stretch of whatever length of cable line you need, and plug that into your TV while your system is down.

I think that she has her own place. And I don't blame her for being mad. Satillite fees are way too expensive and as she said $6.00 an hour sure doesn't go very far. Especially when you are living on your own! I defy anybody to live without tv! I know I couldn't! (well, I guess I could but it would not be fun):(

I think she has a room at her folks. I don't blame her in the least for being upset about the system going down, and I hope they find that they are responsible for having messed up and will make it right as soon as possible. What I was suggesting to Mossopp was a temporary semi fixit gig with tapping into the cable of her folks.

If I'm wrong about the living situation then nevermind. Eitherway, I can sure understand Mossopp for being majorly bumbed about what has happened. For example, my computer gave me trouble a short time ago, and I was some kind of way in the dumps about it! :) :(

....She lives in Scotland. It's in her location. Did you see the £ signs she had in her first post?

Besides, I don't think she'll see this tonight. It's just after 1:30am there (If I did the math correctly).

'Sheeeit', you'all who have been unhelpful! Get off of Mossopp's back. Not a one of you would take such a dilema any less hard than Mossopp expressed that she's taking it. If you pretend that you would, that's only because you haven't lived in Mossopp's shoes.

Where I lived there was no cable tv until 1986 and I survived on 13 channels. Every time I moved, there was a delay on getting my service back or there was no service at all. The day I asked for DSL; I had to wait 'a whole weekend' and a couple more days for it to start working....I had to wait 9 months to see the baby I conceived a 4th of July! The whole point is....life is not over

So? I never had cable at all till I was in my senior year of high school. What does that have to do with anything? She was just asking for some help, and she never said life was over

You gave her a big "up yours". That isn't what she asked for so why did you bother to give it to her and why are you now repeating it to me in order to attempt to justify your "get over it" attitude"?

You had to wait " a whole weekend" "and a couple of days". Huh? Very brave!?

You had to wait 9 months for the baby? I guess that was supposed to make a point but, holybaloney, it sure didn't. Talk about irrelevant.

Just get off of Mossop's back. That is all I am suggesting. That and your highhorse of eversospecialness.

Well I for one feel for ya. The satellite going out would kill me (not literally of course). I couldn't tape anything (and missing out on one episode pisses me off to no end). I'd have the radio and the DVD player. And unlike some people here, I don't watch my TV DVDs a lot. So I understand.

I have this piece of crap DVD recorder. Now I'm not without things to watch without it, but every night I would put something on DVD. Gave me something to do anyway. Now it's broken for the friggin 3rd time in it's short 1.5 years and those incompetant boobs have had it for a month. $1100 for something that doesn't work and never has. Just like Mossopp's receiver, this damn thing should work. I'm mad...and I'd be madder if I hadn't have bought that warranty. Anyway, so I'm pissed and bored just because of this one little machine. It happens to people with lives and people without them. Face the music.

Besides...when people tell someone to get a life...what the hell do they actually mean anyway? Do you have to go out of the house every night to have a life? Do you have to be the next coming of the Hilton sisters?

:clap well said, I agree all the way!

I'm the same way, I get pissed if I miss any episodes of my fav. shows. My stupid DVR box that I got from cable co. was messing up, I think it's finally fixed, I had to exchange my old one for this one, and it messed up too

I agree, staying home doesn't mean a person doesn't have a life, we just all live ours differently :)

First of all I would like to apologise for swearing so much. There was no need for me to do that and I feel quite bad about it. I was just really angry yesterday and, in the absence of anything better to do, I got stinking drunk and acted like a total arse. Sorry.
Anyway, to clarify my living situation:
I have owned my own flat in Glasgow for almost a year now. However I am unable to move in because my boss screwed me out of the transfer I was meant to be getting to the Glasgow branch of my company. I can't move in untill I get a job nearer to my flat but I've been searching all year and I'm yet to find anything. Meanwhile my savings are depleting rapidly because I still have to pay mortgage, insurance, council tax and factor fees on my flat aswell as the £140 my parents demand each month to allow me to continue to live in a tiny little room in their house!
That's why I am so p#ssed about my digital tv being screwed - the only thing that keeps me sane dies on me and I have to pay a ridiclous amount of money to get it fixed when I'm already seriously short on cash!
I would also like to clear up the debate about Scotland being a "3rd world country". I can assure you that we are not, although sometimes it feels like it because I am literally in the middle of nowhere right now! I don't have the option of cable TV because I live in a tiny little village that doesn't even have gas and if the electricity goes off you're pretty much working in the dark for a few days before they'll send anyone out to help you! The TV reception here is non-existant because of the hills and all the trees so digital satalite is really your only option. Without it you're just staring at a blank screen.
And I can't tap into my parents connection. Digital satalite TV requires you to have a receiver (or "digi-box") in order to decode the signal. I had a digi-box but now it's not working hence the reason I can't watch TV anymore. A new digi-box costs over £200.
I'm calling in "sick" at work tomorrow so I can stay home and wait for the engineer to come. I doubt he'll be able to fix it though. I'm not an idiot when it comes to these things and I can see that I'm probably just going to have to buy a new box. If that is the case I'll have to get everything re-installed which won't be happening tomorrow. It could be months.
Wish me luck. And, by the way, if you never hear from me again it's because I missed the final episode of 'Tru Calling' and have killed myself out of abject frustration.

You amuse me - did you know that? I am highly amused that you seemingly cannot get over the fact that I'm gay. You could have said "you could watch your friend's tv set". You could have said "you could watch your parents tv set". You could have said "you could watch your cousin's tv set". But no - you had to mention my "girlfriend".
Just so you know, I don't actually have a girlfriend at the moment. I'm single right now. And let me assure you, if I did have a girlfriend I'd be doing just about everything but watching tv with her!
I'll pause here to let you re-read that last sentence cos I know it will play on your mind for days.

And what the hell does "Whits fur ye'll no gin by ye" mean? If that's some lame attempt at making fun of my accent then that's pretty pathetic. If you tried something like that round my way you'd get the s**t kicked out of you.

You already said you couldn't watch your parents TV set so why should I say "You could watch your parents tv set?".

You made no mention of any cousins.

You claimed to have a girlfriend in another thread. I would assume your girlfriend would let you watch her tv set before your other friends would.

So my response was the best response based on the information given.
