I know that movie. "Mary Poppins" is one of my all-time favorites of the Disney films. The movie was released 40 years ago, today. I have the soundtrack on vinyl as well as the Disneyland version of the soundtrack album of the same name featuring unknown cast like Marni Nixon and Bill Lee. The original soundtrack version had Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews on the other album. I also have the Disneyland spoken word LP of the same name in storybook form with songs in it and it comes with a 11-page full color booklet. All three of these records are collector's items. I love all the songs from the film. "Chim Chim Cher-ee", "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", "Step in Time", "Feed the Birds" and of course "Let's Go Fly a Kite". That movie is still a favorite of my generation. It happened about 40 years ago, today.

Since this is the 40th anniversary of "Mary Poppins", this is the picture of Disneyland's spoken word LP called "Mary Poppins". It has 11-pages in it. I have that one on vinyl.:)

Mary Poppins is a great film. I used to watch it all the time when I was young, and still watch it when it's on during the holidays. One of my fave songs (except for Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious- I love saying that word) was "Jolly Holiday" and I also liked that Sister Suffragettes song near the start of the film, as well as Spoonful of Sugar- in fact, all the songs are great. I thought the ending was sad though. I rank it up there with The Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as films that you cold watch again and again!

Something bothers me though- i searched this actress on imdb.com called Mary Wickes (she's Sister Mary Lazarus in Sister Act) and one of her guest appearance listings was for an old anthology series called "Studio One". It lists her as playing 'Mary Poppins' in an episode called 'Mary Poppins'. I'm wondering if the person who submitted that entry was either lying or mistaken- or if Mary Wickes first played Mary Poppins in an hour long episode of this tv show- then maybe Walt Disney saw it??

I was a little girl when Mary Poppins came out. I just loved it, and still know the songs by heart. It's a true classic.

The DVD sounds interesting- I think there's a deleted scene (Dinsey movies all seem to have a deleted musical number- it's almost as though they planned on dvd being invented) and Julie Andrews said something about the animation being reworked.

Yea,

I also had the soundtrack record and the storybook/record combination. I got to tell you though, I used to have terrible nightmares about that laughing guy that floats on the ceiling. (That Uncle Albert guy played by Ed Wynn) I HATED that I Love to Laugh song!!! I remember growing up in the late 60's and what started my fear of that was they used to have all these little collectable 45's of children's records and Mary Poppins was popular at that time.

I don't remember the actual incident itself but I was like 3 or 4 years old at the time and I got the little 45 rpm of Mary Poppins and one of the songs was "I Love to Laugh." So, as you know, it's starts out with this circus music instrumental and all of a sudden you here this WWWWHOOOO WHOOOO WHOOO WHOOO WHOOOO!!" and my parents just said that at the time I screamed and screamed and just cried and jumped out of my skin, ripped the record off my player and just hid it for fear of someone playing that song again. I was just terrified.

Then of course I got to see the movie because my parents were trying to get me to overcome the fear of that song, but now I got to see the FACE of the guy that terrified me for so many years and it just made it worse!!! (This was about 5 years later) I had nightmares of that damn room in the movie, I was afraid to sleep with the lights out or the closet door open for fear of hearing that friggin laugh and seeing his face in my sleep! I would have these terrifying nightmares of people that I was close to, or me being hurt in some way and Ed Wynn would always be above me in the dream just laughing and laughing and laughing and I would get hurt in the dream and he would just keep right on laughing, it was aweful!

So, I have to say, sorry, but I HATE THIS MOVIE BECAUSE ED WYNN tramatized my childhood! I mean come on, the guy just looks and sounds like one of those old men that your parents tell you to stay away from because he is a child-molester or something. Every movie that that actor is in he always has that strange voice! Damn, the guy would probalby laugh during a funeral!

No offense or disrespect to anybody that likes Mary Poppins. But many of us I am sure have been tramatized by a scene or situation in a movie, and sometimes movies intended for children can frighten them for many years. The "Laughing Sequence" in Mary Poppins just happend to be the one scene in the movie that created terror and trama for me.
