View Full Version : "I Am Curious...Maddie"

"_____________"

no answer. just confusion with answers not spoken. sam figured out that david stood between him and maddie. he confronts david and tells him he is not good enough for her. later, they fight. dave takes the first punch, but gets the worst end of it.
maddie earlier gave dave the chance to say what was on his mind. and he didn't.
she goes home to tell sam she won't marry him. he's gone and david hears her confession. they argue, call each other names, and she slaps david. then, the moment came. as they embraced nothing stood in their way. passion overtook them.
the new era begins.

loved the opening with the parody of "movietone news".

another great episode.

rating: 9

Hey Bobby! I'm like you, Moonlighting is one of the ONLY shows that can sustain me like that when I'm watching it.

WOW! What could possible be said about this episode that hasn't already been said....

Back in March 1987...I remember all the excitement leading up to this episode and what a big deal was made out of it in the press and on the radio stations and around the water coolers at work and everywhere!

I seriously cannot remember a time before or since then that a bigger deal was made over two TV characters having sex than was made about this episode. Sure fans inside fan communities talk about their fav characters having sex....but I am talking about across the board.... in the press, in public, just every where....this was one of the major topics of conversation the spring of 1987.

Ok I know I posted the last comment here and the usual procedure is to let someone else comment but this is something I have been meaning to ask others about....and before I forget, I want to post it.

I have people who write into my site that comment on this episode and several of them really believe that David and Maddie actually made love for the first time on the living room floor.... they think that they did it right there on the floor and then later when we see them in Maddie's bed that is after the first time--right before they do it again.

Now I just never saw the scene that way....I always took it that they started it downstairs but finished it upstairs in the bed....

but what do you guys think? Are these people correct??? And sorry if this post offends anyone.....

No offense at all C!
I believe that they started downstairs with a lot of rolling around, heavy kissing and touching and exploring.
Then I believe, he picked Maddie up in his arms and carried her upstairs where they made love for the first AND second time.
(according to Dave also a third time) LOL:lol:

:yeahthat

That's my opinion if anybody wants to know anyway!

Oh kismet! This is exciting comparing the two scenes...and with Maddie's staircase sorta like the one at the Butler home in Atlanta....this would really be an effective visual. Rhett & Scarlett were battling lovers too.... And Rhett always had that bad boy image much like David A. CLASSIC!!

Cindy, I really apreciate you telling these kind of things, because I don't know that stuff since I was too young and didn't watch the show by that time. If you can, keep telling this stories!! They're great!! I can imagine millions of people talking about Maddie and Dave doing it and all the publicity... god, that must have been great!!!!:D

I agree...I really appreciate your first-hand knowledge as well, as I was also too young to see ML in its first runs. It's cool to know how big this show and this particular episode were at the time they originally aired.

As for the actual episode...I loved every minute of it. The Big Bang scene is the most vivid memory I have of ML. What a great - and very fitting - way to finally bring these two together! This is Maddie and Dave we're talking about...it had to start with a fight.

I also loved the music selection of "Be My Baby." I know I've read some things on your site, Cindy, about the song being somewhat of a controversial choice, but I thought it was just perfect. In fact, every time I hear it on the radio, I think of that great scene. :biglove:

Ohhh don't do this to me!! It's my favorite movie of all the times!!!! (yes, I'm also a romantic, can't help it!) And thinking about THAT particular scene... oh god, it makes me tremble. It's a wonderful moment. And of course, Maddie and David scene is just the same... I think I've said before that this is my favorite episode. I just think it is perfect in every possible way. They had one of the biggest fights ever, and they ended up just like they HAD to en up. Too much pressure and represed feelings for so long... it was a torture, really!! And such a release FINALLY seeing them like that...

You remember when we were talking about feeling the scenes in your stomach? (I think it was in Cybill's site, I'm not sure:rolleyes: ) Well, this is definitly the scene I felt with all my heart and my stomach, hehe. I had such a feeling in my stomach, I was having butterflies all over it, hehe. The first time I saw this part I was so shocked and having so many feelings inside... It was wonderful. And... I know the dialogues by heart, I already said this, hehe :D

the song was perfect. and being that it is in the genre of music dave likes so much, it was just right.

some of you new younger folks obviously do not know just how popular dave and maddie were. they were bigger than the show. at times, people that didn't watch moonlighting knew who they were and what was going on because the media gave them a lot of exposure.

david&maddie4ever

Bobby-

You're right...I don't really have a full grasp of the popularity of ML back in the '80s. None of my friends (and, I'm assuming, most of my generation) have ever even heard of it. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person on the planet who's a fan. :(

CyBr
08-10-2004, 10:59 PM
A few points here.

First, the Big Bang scene was perfect to me. I tend to think it started in the living room and moved to the bedroom because Maddie wanted to hear how David felt about her before anything happened between them. That didn't happen until they were in the bedroom. I have mixed emotions that we never actually "heard" him say "I love you" even though the music in the scene is great.

Second, I'll probably in the minority here, but I think this is the weakest episode of the trilogy until the last scene, of course. But much of the episode to me feels like filler with only a couple scenes between David and Maddie until the big finish. Even the scene in Maddie's office where she tries to force the issue with David has long pauses that don't ring true to me for David.

Lastly, I do think you had to be around when the show first aired to truly appreciate the hype around David and Maddie. Particularly with all the re-runs in between new episodes, it took forever to find out "Will they or won't they," especially as the third season heated up. The show holds up really well but I think it's hard to really appreciate that aspect of it now.

i think it started downstairs and ended up upstairs because when david and maddie were kissing downstairs-david suddenly stopped and looked at her. i think at that moment he decided it wasn't just 'biology' and wanted to do it the way he talked about it in the car in the next episode. i think it was important to him that he that she was pleased.

CindyK

Ok so we are all on the same page and think the thing started downstairs and ended upstairs.

... but then this is one of the arguments made to me by a fan that believes they did it on the floor first and then went to Maddie's bed. He wrote:

"So then explain where his clothes went. We see him nearly fully dressed downstairs and if he carries her upstairs and then we see him lay her on the bed, when did he have a chance to take his clothes off? Surely he couldn't have done that while carrying her. Therefore, the clothes came off downstairs and if the clothes came off downstairs don't you think something else took place too?"

Interesting question, isn't it? I still think regardless of where his clothes went when, the intention was he carried her to bed and they made love there for the first time....

kismet
08-12-2004, 09:40 PM
I don't know. I still think they stopped momentarily (he gave her "that look") and then he carried her up the stairs. Remember that Maddie had on only a sheet that was probably disposed of very quickly. AND the men I have known can get undressed faster than Superman.:D

MulberryGal

This is a great discussion!

I could imagine that after "two years of is you is or is you aint" and "bees being and ducks ducking and a man who thinks that culture is dark beer", any disgarding of clothes would be rather quick.... :D

Still can't understand how Maddie can end up confused and unhappy the morning after tho, but that's for another thread!!

Ofcourse we must not forget that there could be some time between the rolling around on the livingroom floor and the 'going to bed scene'.
I just think that Maddie was being carried upstairs by David with the sheet still draped over her body, and that he threw his clothes on the floor in the bedroom and then they kissed again standing up and THEN they both went to bed for the BIG FINALE!

(btw the bedscene was also standing up with a bed attached to the wall... because they looked better that way and Cyb had her pregnant belly and bruce had an accident which broke his collarbone)

Yeah it's true as far as I know!
That's why they were able to shuffle onto the bed holding eachother like that.
I mean I don't think you can do that when you're laying down.

I mentioned this on another forum -- but did anyone else notice that Cybill yells "Bruce" right after she enters the bed (when she thinks Sam is in it)? I always wondered what actually happened.

Remember he says, "oooh, I like that," and then Cybill yells "Bruuuuuuuuuuce". Maybe it's just my imagination. ;)

most of this episode for me was the last part of the episode.

it was creepy for sam to show up in davids bedroom.

when david and maddie were making love on the living room floor, david turned over the coffee table that sam had prepared breakfast on that morning.

i just don't think it could have been any other way for maddie and david. there was no way that maddie was going to let david leave, so she had to follow him and pick a fight.

the rolling around and upstairs, i felt so relieved for maddie. finally!

I've just watched this one again (aww!). I love the smile on Maddie's face at the end just before he says he loves her. She looks so happy to be with him. At the point, you could never guess how unhappy she would be about it all later on. She looks SO happy here!!!

At that moment in the bedroom together, it is just the two of them free of all external influences....private moments where they can just be one together. But come daylight, things change dramatically because they have to face the realities of their business relationship, their social positions, their gender attitudes, and so on.... That is why David's idea to just stay in the bed and do everything from there is symbolically not such a bad idea at all.

Maddie wakes up with the sun starting to cross the bed...and it reminds her of the outside world....the reality that it is now the morning and the world has to intrude on their private bliss...so she reacts accordingly.

I LOVE the idea of David carrying Maddie upstairs, Gone With The Wind style. So romantic, so passionate!

You know, I'd actually kind of liked Sam ( ) until the point where he appeared in David's bedroom and basically bragged about how brilliant he was. Suddenly I didn't like him one teensy bit!

I wish I had been around during all the Moonlighting hype. I'd love to be able to have a folder of magazine and newspaper clippings about the show, the characters and their actors (I do that with shows I love :D) but there just aren't any articles for me to do that with any more :(. Except I doubt that the hype was quite as big here in the UK as it was in America, anyway. But still!

To answer your question....the stuff I have comes from several sources.
1) some of it was original stuff that I had saved 2) some is sent in by fans to share with other fans on the site 3) eBay!

You can find just about anything at eBay.

I also sometimes rummage through magazine stacks and such at flea market/collectibles shops/antique stores and run into magazines and tabloids of the 80's that have items on Moonlighting.

SweetCakes
01-05-2005, 04:46 PM
Whenever I look on eBay for Moonlighting things, all I can find is the Pilot on DVD and video, the soundtrack, occasionally some videos of other episodes and loads of things like t-shirts, mouse pads etc, all with the same picture printed on. Never anything interesting :(

This topic has digressed muchly from the original topic of I Am Curious! :D

CindyK

Emma

You sometimes have to look for keyword listings on eBay that cover Cybill, Cybil, Sybil (since they can't spell her name right half the time) or Bruce Willis, And some times people spell Moonlighting Moon Lighting so look there too. Also look for sellers on eBay who deal in old magazines and then go look at their online eBay stores. Sometimes they have things that have ML in them too. Just pay close attention to what the item is....there was also a movie named Moonlighting that starred Jeremy Irons and has nothing to do with the TV series.

Ok...getting us back on topic for the episode. I rewatched this recently and something diff. struck me this time. Has anyone ever thought about how many times some one talks or asks about telling someone how they feel in this episode?

First in the recap we see the Blonde on Blonde seen where David is encouraged to tell Maddie how he feels. We also see the scene in Sam and David where David attempts to tell Maddie his realization. Then we see the scene in Maddie's Turn to Cry where Sam tries to tell Maddie how she is supposed to feel about his proposal.

Early in this episode Sam goes over to David's and gives him the speech about how he should tell Maddie how he feels but that he will lose because they both know who is really better for her.

Then when Maddie comes to work, David is waiting in her office and the first thing he wants to know is why didn't she tell him about Sam's proposal and what she told Sam. This leads to Maddie turning the tables on him and asking him point blank how he feels about her.

Next, Viola and Dipesto have the long discussion about whether one should risk telling a person how they really feel. Then they end up in Mr. Addison's office and encourage him to go downstairs and tell Miss Hayes how he feels.

Then when David goes down to the garage, the first thing he says to Maddie is that he wants to talk to her. After the brawl with Sam, David states that he just wanted to talk to her.

While Maddie and Sam are riding in the car to dinner, the discussion turns to the fact that Maddie hasn't said a thing, didn't tell her mom, and hasn't answered Sam's proposal question. Maddie also gets angry that Sam "told" David about the proposal.

After Maddie goes up to the office and then out to the bar with Agnes, Agnes tells Maddie about how whenever she has a problem she always talks to Mr. Addison. And Maddie replies this is not something she cares to talk to Mr. Addison about. Maddie also declares she owes Sam an answer and she needs to go give him an answer.

When Maddie and David are arguing in her bedroom Maddie tells David that through the whole thing he hasn't said a word about how he feels....and David tells her he doesn't have to say anything that they both know it.

And then of course, the very final scene David finally tells Maddie how he feels....

I've just watched this episode videoed from abc1 properly after peeps said they'd cut the fight short.

Boy, didn't they completely ruin this?! It goes straight from:

"Fine!" "Fine!"
"Good!" "Good!"...
"Get out!" (David stops her slapping him).
Ba ba boom etc.. :D

They cut out the bitch/ba****d, and the two slaps. How ridiculous is that!? It makes it look odd and unrealistic that he could even guess she was going to slap him. Talk about your bad editing... Shame on you abc1!

Oh no! You are kidding! How could such a classic scene like this be butchered so. This does completely change the momentum of the scene and make it look like David is the aggressor when actually it is Maddie who makes "first contact" with the slap. Yet hearing the whole argument including the Bitch...Bastard...builds the passion/aggression to the point where there is no way out. I believe that without the name calling and the slaps, David would have had no reason to grab her arm and he would have instead been out the door.

MulberryGal
02-25-2005, 12:07 PM
It's really painful to watch it being cut up like that. I agree that the whole scene from the moment Maddie realises David is in her bed, is building up to something - either they will leap on each other or David would leap out of the door!

David looks slightly aggressive in this 'weird cut' version, and it makes no sense. I just hope that anyone who watched this will have seen the whole thing before, or high tail it to your site to see the whole thing!

Actually I believe he says "I love you, Maddie." And isn't it the pits that we can't hear him say it!

Again, old thread, but I just saw it today!!! :D I've been trying for weeks now, but I think I finally saw him say it. Except, I think he says, "I've always loved you." IMHO I see a distinct "I've" when he first begins to speak. I watched it about 40 times to be sure. Yipee!

Hi its laura here again , hope everyone had a good xmas and new year!
I just had to have my say in this thread. First of all your completely right cybill does yell bruuuuce when maddie gets into bed thinking its sam . Ive had watched and re-watched my tapes and she definitely says it.But for the life on me i can not see when david says to maddie "I love you". I have watched that scene over and over and over !! again ( got turned on and jumped on hubby!) but still couldnt see it damn.
Right now to the second point of when and where david and maddie first made love, seeing that we dont actually see them in the act (shame) it would be interesting to ask Glenn what he was thinking of when he wrote that scene, But how i always fantasized it is that they do do it on the living room floor first and then go upstairs for the encore, hubba hubba.I mean if you think about in a realistic sense and put yourself in their shoes would you stop in the throes of passion to go upstairs! besides there is something very sexy about making love on the living room floor in front of the fire, trust me ive done it !!!( or for that matter even an Lazee Boy! ) note to cybill. Ive read her version of what happened that 'other' night and i dont believe a single word of it either.

In school the first day after the original airing of the show in 1987, a male classmate of mine said, "No way is that sheet staying on for five minutes..."

;)

However, odd as it may sound to some, I myself have always believed that they started downstairs and completed up. I say this because of the way the views are arranged. First they are downstairs on the floor; then the famous pause and look; and at last, they wind up in bed. Just the way this is presented tells me one happened right after (or pretty soon after) the other. I think that's what directors do. If you show one frame and then the next, I think it's 'one, two,' normally, isn't it? If we weren't to believe in a visual sequence of events, why would it have been given to us in precisely that way? I've done writing and I've studied film writing, and I would think asking the audience to move away from "this, and then this," is to invite confusion. I was trying to figure out some of the time sequence before, and I swear if you focus in on the clock that's in the background when they are standing near the fireplace, the last shot you'll see of that says 11:55. (Or thereabouts.) We don't get a view of the clock upstairs... So there goes that attempt.

Another friend of mine said, at the time, "The couch, the couch?!"-- meaning, oh good, now you broke the table, there's glass all over the floor, why didn't they just... Ahem. Oh well.

Love is a many-splendored thing. ;)

Just had to put my 2 cents in for this episode: This is my all time favorite episode of the whole series. This never changes in standings in my top fave episodes. I've never heard the words I love you either at the very end and i try to see if i can see them mouthed and i don't :( I wish they would of had him say it for people to really hear in this episode . Even though Maddie indirectly says in To Heiress Human that he does say it to her. I know there was contreversy about the end iof this episode but i don't thin it was to voilent or harsh . It was perfect for their relationship to happen this way. 3 years of pent of passion and this is what happens. I still get butterflies in my stomach watching it. I love it so much!

Pretty darn loud. I didn't do anything extraodinary either. I just cranked the speakers maybe 2/3 of the way to the right (in terms of turning the volume switch) and watched the whole scene from the beginning. (In fact the whole episode, but only with the sound raised here to check this point.)

If you have it loud from at least the part where he grabs her hand to the closing credits, I swear you can hear just enough under the music. There is, as you might expect, heavy breathing, as well as the noise of the table breaking and such; then when they are upstairs, just before the last kiss that we see, it sounds like he mumbles "I love you."

I don't have anything special on my computer set-up, just normal JBL brand speakers.

Hope this helps explain it. Thanks.

I just checked over at the website for U.S. retailer Tower (http://www.towerrecords.com/product.aspx?pfid=3367295) and it says the DVDs are going to be close-captioned. You know what that means. In three weeks, with one press of the CC button, we may be able to answer this question about those legendary three words of dialogue for good. ;) I'm pretty darn sure what I heard, but still, it would be nice to have this settled in an irrefutable way. The only better way to know would be to have a copy of the script. I have some for other episodes, but not this one.

This is better than Christmas! :D

I hope that's correct. I have watched that scene so many times, and I have always thought that he said "I love you" right before the cut. The look on Maddie/Cybill's face is perfect. There is a natural sexiness about Cybill that is wonderful. Her natural sexiness comes out in that split-second of a scene. I have always found the very end of The Big Bang much more sexy than the "crash the furniture" beginning.

kismet

It means that the words/dialogue come up on the bottom of the screen so that you can read them (usually for the hearing-impaired, but my daughter loves to watch DVDs with the close-captioning on and she is not hearing-impaired).

Hi Folks,

I have been enjoying your debate.

I hold in my hand the script for "I Am Curious, Maddie".

I am afraid to tell you the ending of the scene is different than it was finally taped. The following are the stage directions for the last scene:

"CUT TO:

A BED

in Maddie's bedroom...as David gently LOWERS Maddie onto it...softly...with great care...simultaneously lying down with her...the two of them intertwined...and they KISS...but this time it's a more romantic kiss...more gentle...more loving...and then...they embrace...bare skin to bare skin...and as they glide back down to the pillow, wrapped in each other's arms...we...

FREEZE FRAME.

So I am afraid the script does nothing to resolve your debate. You may also notice, it says nothing about using "Be My Baby". That is not surprising, as it was extremely difficult to get the rights to use that song. That is another interesting story for another day however.

But about your debate....fear not, the resolution came from the man himself. About 6 months after the show was cancelled, Bruce Willis did an interview, in which he clearly stated that people were upset that his character had never said "I love you, Maddie". But he said, he definitely did say it, and for whatever reason, they decided to run the music over the line, but if you watch you can see it.

I have dug this article up several times before, but I don't have it right at my fingertips. If anybody is interested, I will try to find and post it tomorrow.

Keep up the fun conversations...I love your passion.

Okay, here are the links for where I saw it on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CRR3NI/qid=1137561213/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-8894384-4826313?s=dvd&v=glance&n=130) and Tower (http://www.towerrecords.com/product.aspx?pfid=3367295). It's listed as 'coming soon' on Best Buy (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7652925&type=product&id=1510098), but they don't provide any information about CC readiness. Still, I hope they are there.

Also...where did you get that script? I have ones for several other episodes. The only one I have from the arc is "Blonde," fine enough believe me, but of course I'd give my eye teeth for the others as well...

I really hope I stand corrected about the close captioning, but I know I read somewhere that it was not. I know that when seasons 1 and 2 were announced, they were listed as close captioned. I remember we all tried very hard to find the captioning at the ML list viewing party last year.

As far as scripts, I've gotta tell you I've been collecting them for years. I was lucky to make a few connections and get some of the authentic scripts, many that were not readily available.

After just watching the GMA interview with Joan Lunden, and Bruce and Cybill mentioning Bruce's neck size (16 1/2"), it reminded me of how much I love it when he grabs her arm when she is about to slap him again. His hand seems so big in comparison to her arm. His hand completely wraps around her forearm with room to spare. I find that really sexy. I would love to see him in person to see how big of a man he is. With a tall woman like Cybill, he didn't appear that large sometimes. BUT I have heard several interviewers comment on how big of a guy he is and that they were surprised when they first met him that he was such a big guy.

Speaking of necks, Cybill sure does have a beautiful one, doesn't she? Uh-oh, I'm re-living the In 'n Outlaws couch scene again. Man, I love that scene.

This time we're lucky. The captions are there! I just watched some with the words switched on, and they work.

(A technical note for those not used to close captions--you have to use the function on the TV remote or the TV set menu to activate them, since these are not the same as subtitles on the DVD.)

In any event, I was hoping they would help resolve that question about the dialogue at the end of "I Am Curious."

(Drumroll)

...:( They don't.

Yeah, I know, me too. :p

Anyhoo, it's nice to have the CC available, since my hearing can be iffy anyway, but I had kind of hoped that particular line would be visible. (Literally.) Would have been nice. Still, even if it wasn't written into the original script, I'll take the word of the actor any day.

I'm not saying he didn't say it. It's just that for whatever reason, I'm guessing because the music is so loud, the captions don't pick it up. They do show you the song lyrics, but anything else going on at that moment may have been overwhelmed by the soundtrack and so not shown up. Still, I'm pretty sure I saw the same thing too.

We do have word from the actor. So I'll trust it's there.

I received Season 3 last week, and I can't get enough. I definitely saw David say "I love you" at the end of I Am Curious. Hey Luar!

Cybill says this during the DVD commentary for Atomic Shakespeare - during the bit where Petruchio and Kate get married and he takes off her gag to kiss her. Bruce starts it off on the commentary by teasing Cybill "you're laughing!" then she says "don't you remember I always laughed when you kissed me!" or something similar..

This really annoyed me the last time I watched this episode. When Sam puts Maddie to bed in the morning it looks to me like she is wearing shoes (trainers/sneakers) when she walks into the bedroom and then gets straight into bed without taking them off. Am I imagining that? And if I am not has anyone spotted any other errors in continuity?

dreams200377
09-07-2006, 07:11 AM
nope, you're not imagining it, I noticed that too. very odd.

neon000
09-07-2006, 01:53 PM
I don't think it's an error in continuity at all. It's clearly deliberate. If you remember from the scene downstairs, he is rapidly figuring out that she is going all sorts of places with Dave--notice how they won't say his name during the conversation when she walks in the house, although obviously they both know what's going on. He offers her breakfast, then when she hesitates for half a second, pushes her upstairs. This is even though he's already eaten most of his own food. Sam was trying to get Maddie out of the way. The call from 'her mother' exacerbated the situation further: he was so frustrated at her lack of interest that this was the last straw, and he goes over to David's place to settle this once and for all.

So the 'put her to bed' scene belongs there for a reason. It's a sign of Sam's increasing panic, his attempt to force things to stay the way he wants, and Maddie's confusion and lack of preparation for things in general.

Tamm
09-07-2006, 03:22 PM
I see whay Sam put Maddie to bed but I still think she'd have stopped to take off her shoes!

However its a tiny point and makes no difference to the episode overall

CyBr
09-07-2006, 09:34 PM
I also didn't like how she didn't even take off her coat. Remember she made a point to tell David that she only had a nightgown under there? The way he put her to bed like that looked awkward to me.

kismet
09-08-2006, 09:48 AM
I always thought that Maddie wearing her coat and shoes to bed was deliberate. She did not want to get undressed. It was a kind of protection from any advances Sam may have made towards her. Maddie knew that she wanted to put a kind of wall between them. She knew at that time that David was the man for her. That is why she makes such statements (or lack of statements) to her mom on the phone. Just my opinion.

adyjdy
09-08-2006, 11:34 AM
Maybe I'm alone in this, but I never really made very much of her telling her mother recent events were just the usual routine. Maddie seems a very private person to me who, close as she is to her parents, doesn't tell them a whole lot about her life. I mean she didn't tell her mother about the pregnancy until she had to, and she was pretty coy in talking about the identity of the father. Anyway, my two cents, I think Sam made too much of that comment.

neon000
09-09-2006, 08:15 AM
I don't think he did. That's because it's reasonable for him to expect that a woman who has just recently been proposed to, really ought to be somewhat happy about the event-- or at least mildly interested!

Yet she tells her mother nothing special happened.

Right in front of the man who proposed to her.

(If she was even really talking to her mom, that is... )

If I were Sam, of course I would be deeply offended.

She probably waited so long to tell her mother about the pregnancy because she was so embarrassed and frightened, uncertain about the father, uncertain about her future with either of the potential fathers, and just so out of her mind about the whole thing that it looked to me like she wanted to fall off the edge of the Earth. Maybe she was, early on, thinking about 'getting it taken care of,' as the saying goes.

CyBr
09-09-2006, 12:23 PM
You all make some good points I hadn't thought of before. Maybe leaving on her coat (and her shoes, which I never noticed) was deliberate to show that Maddie wanted to keep some distance from Sam. I do think that really was her mother on the phone. It seemed in character for Maddie not to tell her much, especially since she was so undecided about everything. But I can see how Sam would take it as a huge sign that Maddie had reservations about his proposal.

neon000
10-15-2006, 12:13 PM
There could be a very simple explanation for this.

Remember, downstairs, Sam said Maddie ought to get some sleep. Then he walks up with her. It's not like she's going anywhere else for a while.

Maddie could have figured it was not worth it to change out of her nightgown, since that's what you wear to bed anyway...

neon000
10-15-2006, 12:27 PM
The moment I find far more weird in this particular sequence is when Sam asks Maddie if she wants some breakfast-- he's already had his-- and then gives her about two seconds to answer. He takes her silence as a 'no,' and quickly ushers her upstairs.

I thought it was a sign of his brusqueness, that he wasn't being reasonable, because clearly she is standing there with her mind running a thousand different ways, and he doesn't actually get a definitve yes or no from her, doesn't give her enough time--just kind of takes over the situation.

We have heard this before, and we will hear it again.

I think in Sam's head he's adding up one bad sign after another, having heard that she went out to do something with somebody  , and he doesn't like the answers he's getting. Notice he's reluctant to say it in as many words. If Maddie knew he was still battling Dave, she might get tired of all this and throw the both of them out of the picture. So he has to sneak off to take care of this by himself.

Also, it's not entirely unheard of to fall asleep in your clothes, especially if you haven't been to sleep in a day or more. I've done that, shoes included. Sometimes you're just worn out, you come in, you hit the couch and boom, lights out because your body knows it needs sleep.

Look at what Maddie's been up to. With the crazy nighttime chase, of course she's tired, and she might not be thinking of normal habits-- 'just let me close my eyes.'

Hi,
I know this is a old thread, but i've been reading it and i was wondering if nobody noticed that Maddie had a tear down her cheek. You can see it on her right cheek, after she got out of bed again screeming Bruce (she did, i checked it after reading about it, it's kinda funny).

But, back to the tear that went probably down her cheek, you can see her make-up is washed. Did anyone see this?

Yes, I noticed the tear stain...sweetly sad. I've noticed many little things such as this with the clarity of DVD. For instance, you can really pick out the stand in's and stunt actors (the hair is usually a dead giveaway).;)

She actually starts crying while reading Sam's letter and the tears are so noticable. And the pattern on the sheets is very noticable too LOL I love having clear copies of the show on dvd!

I'm amazed at the details I can see on the DVDs. I never knew she was crying until I saw that! I love seeing the patterns on their clothes and even the faults and flaws (as Maddie would say)!

Now I have to look at this episode AGAIN... to watch the pattern. Didn't noticed it yet, was probably looking at something else...... :-))

Are there any other good details to spot?
(After all, it's the best excuse to watch this great part...)

There is another detail to look out for but it`s from the next episode - To Heiress Human-
It`s from the morning after the night before bedroom scene... if you look closely you can see Cybill maternity support briefs under the sheet ( they`re pink so it`s not too hard to notice them).

Oooooh - SEXY!

That reminds me of Maddie/Cybill walking down the hall with her maternity support hose on, face all shiny/sweaty with the look of morning sickness. Isn't pregnancy wonderful when you have to share it with the world?:D

I have yet to see the "I love you" clearly, but golly gee! I don't think I could backpedal the way Maddie did first thing the next morning. Why not savor the moments?

I do remember Moonlighting being the hottest thing on TV at this time. I was in high school then and the build up from Blonde on Blonde onward was incredible. We didn't miss having something like the internet with sites like this! The show was, as others have said, a big cultural topic at the time. I had a crush on Bruce too then. Anyway, I remember being a little put off at the time with the smashing glass and breaking furniture. I guess I thought of it as kind of "mean" lovemaking and wanted them to come together more gently than that, but now I think the scene plays out logically. There was so much heat between them that the first time wasn't going to be violins and edelweiss. Bruce and Cybill were excellent in the episode, the chemistry between them crackling fiercely. The kissing and the way they held each other was great. I loved it! I loved their argument; it was rhythmic. I also liked Stalker Sam confronting David in his home; the banterish confrontation at the office when David follows Maddie in the hallway; the barrage in the garage; the argument between Maddie and Sam. The bar scene with Maddie and Agnes seemed like filler though, even though Agnes was funny demanding drinks and then passing out. The episode was nearly absolutely perfect!

Love your post MaddieLovesDavid and agree on everything youv`e said , for me though the problem with the `lovemaking scene was that it wasn`t long enough .
Now i know it was a pre watershed show and they couldn`t go too far but it would have been nice to have seen a bit more of the same if nothing else.More rolling /more kissing and maybe a longer bed scene. ;)
Especially knowing what we know now about the following episodes , this was really the only time that we got to see them truelly happy in each others arms. The writers should have milked that scene with everything they could.

Hi, Laura! I agree with you too. Every time I watch that scene from the first slap onwards I think it's too short also. After two and a half seasons of build-up we should have seen a little more. Didn't they even show longer lovemaking scenes in soap operas at the time?
